Am still using Access 2000. Have a form that (among many other fields) contains fields for Lastname, Firstname, Middle and Sufx. I want it to sort that way when opened. In the Properties, I have the "Order by" set exactly that way (with commas separating each of the fields). It ignores the sort order, and instead, orders the records by ID, which is the primary key. I have tried sorting the table that is the data source (not a query) by those fields, but it does not good; form still orders by the primary key.

Have designed many databases, and none of the others ignore the "Order by". What am I missing?

A:Solved: Form refuses to sort as instructed

Don, I can't help you much with this one as I never use the Form's "sort by", but I would break down the problem.
Check the Record Source.
If it is OK try sorting on one field, if that works add another one and so on.
I have always used a Query for the Record Source and do the sorting in the Query.

Greetings!

I can't seem to save the 'sort by' settings, I tend to organise it by 'Contributing artists' yet every time I close the window and re-open it windows explorer resets it and sorts by name. I have tried restarting in safe mode, and it produced the exact same results.

I'm able to sort other folders such as 'my documents' by size/date modified etc. but for some reason it won?t do this for 'My Music' folder.

Can anyone help?

A:Explorer refuses to save 'sort by' settings for 'My Music'

Hi Grimmrock

Have you tried going into that particular folder options? Clicking the "View" tab at the top, then clicking options "button" to the far right side, then on that "pop up" window, select view tab, then click the apply to folders button?

I am running windows xp media edition on a dell dimension 3100.
I am having trouble with internet searches, being told that I am infected and that I should download from a link to cure it and windows security saying that it is not set to automatic updates. When I check in control panel the automatic updates are set as they always have been but the icon on the lower right of my desktop says that my computer is at risk due to auto updates being turned off.
When I try to carry out a google search using mozilla firefox usually nothing happens, as if it is taking hours to carry out the search.
I know very little about viruses and am afraid to do much without expert advice as I don't wish to do further or irreparable damage to my system.
I have run deep scans with nod32, spybot s+d, vundo.exe and lavasoft ad-aware all of which get rid of things which soon come back.
Please help me with this as I have very little idea what to do for the best, thank you.

All of a sudden my "security" system detects theres a virus and a whole different anti virus application pops up saying i should download it, trying to push me to pay. It infected everything, i mean EVERYTHING. I can't run a single application without it interrupting and telling me to buy buy buy. I managed to track it and i tried to delete but it needs the administration's permission which is me (I have vista) and i continue and it still can't delete it. I know its the Rogue Scanner. Hi White Knights, Good Guys and Gals,

My PC was attacked, likely through Internet Explorer today, since I haven't downloaded anything. The following are is the list of Malware that XP Security Center has notified:

=email-worm.win32.netsky.q
=rootkit.win32.agent.pp
=backdoor.win32.kbot.al
=net-worm.win32.mytob.t
=net-worm.win32.dipnet.d
=virus.win32.hala.a
=trojan.downloader.js.multi.ca
=virus.win32.gpcode.ak

and Trojan Remover has identified
c:\windows\system32\vacinit.dll

and Mcafee
NTROSKRN... (rootkit trojan)

The program "Protection Systems" continues to pop up prompting me to buy along with random IExplorer bombs despite having removed it from programs. The system regularly freezes when I employ anti-malware programs.

I have attempted to use in normal and safe operating mode (Mcafee from safe command prompt)
=Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise (halts early in operation, Identifies NTROSKRN and 11 cookies)
=Stopzilla (Halts early in operation)
=Malwarebytes(fails to open even with changed name)
=Rooter Malware Finder (Eric_71) (operates results indeterminant)
=Trojan Remover (Runs. results indeterminant)

I am not in a good position to format the PC (in the wilderness).

Any advice what is preventing these malware programs from operating?

Thanks, and happy to repay the favor particularly if you like homebrew since PC wars arent my specialty!

Just one annoying problem I can't fix. Ever since update 1607. Whenever I try & open a mp4 video, it opens with another app I have installed that came with codecs to play flv files in windows media player. It refuses to open with WMP on double click. I have checked default & on the first menu its black & refuses to change to anything I set. The more advance option for file associations it shows its set to WMP.

I'm really starting to consider going back to windows 7 because it's 1 problem after another with 10.

A lot of folks that need to play various videos have gone to VLC [http://www.videolan.org/]. Windows Media Center was left out of Win10. The Store has Windows DVD Player.

As the title says, I believe this is issue of it. My computer doesn't "startup" and leads me to a blue error screen stating "A problem has been detected and windows has shutdown to prevent damage to your computer" along with the following technical codes on the bottom of the screen being 0x0000007e (0x80000003, 0xba4c32b8, 0xba4c2fb4) .

Before this happened though I had that popular issue with google links being hijacked and "thought" I fixed it finally when i used regedit to change the two renamed files that spyware had renamed back to normal.

I'm running a custom rig with Windows XP Home Edition and would appreciate any help at all at getting my computer back into some kind of working condition.

I've also tried to reinstall windows/repair but that ends up failing for some reason I can't remember at this time, but if someone responds and needs the exact error message I can go ahead and do that.

If this topic needs to be moved, do move it to the appropriate place for me please. I figured since I don't know if this is the exact cause of my computer screwing up, this is the best place to post. (Also I am new.)

Hi there
the latest incarnation of DvdFab (version 9.X etc) FAIL to open even bog standard DVD's on W8.1 - error message : "Cannot open E:\"

DVD is fine - plays OK and it's an OLD one so shouldn't have any problems with any new copy protection schemes -- actually was the 1st Disc in the set of the Classic US TV series "The Invaders" with Roy Thinnes - if you've never seen it well worth it - they just don't seem to make TV series like that these days -- also no Mobile phones back then so half the movie isn't spent looking at people making mobile phone calls !!!. I was wanting to rip this series so I could watch either on a tablet or smartphone (Samsung S4).

AnyDVD works just fine - I was hoping though to be able to Rip and Convert with a single program instead of using AnyDVD to Decrypt and de-regionalize the DVD and then use Handbrake for ripping it. DVD Catalyst also has problems at getting a decent quality of copy -- seems the old software is still the best -- although Handbrake takes a bit of effort to set it up to get high quality rips.
If anybody has got DvdFab to work on Windows 8.1 using PHYSICAL DVD's (not previously copied iso's to HDD via using other software) please post what release you are using. I've tried with Rel 9.0.X and 9.1.X both fail.

Cheers

For the last month, I have been constantly dealing with an issue that is apparently very common for Firefox. Every now and then, I will try to open the browser and it simply will not do do. In the task bar, the icon will glow but then wll fade away.

The fix to this problem is simply uninstalling and re installing Firefox. However, that never works for long. I have had to do this at least a dozen times over the past month. It is frustrating to the point where I have started using Chrome again, which has it's own problems.

Does anyone know of a permanent solution to this problem, or at the very least what the cause is?

Thanks.

My computer has been very very sluggish of late. When I ran a scan to with AVG it showed 34 spyware problems amongst which were important Windows files (e.g. wininit.exe, services.exe). However this particular item was repeated several times \\?\globalroot\Device\_max++>\7F78B1C45x86.dll.

I have tried to install several anti-spyware programs (superantispyware, malaware bytes, spyware doctor, ad-aware ... and a few others). All became uncreative shortly after installation. And would not subsequently reopen.

I have done the scan (GERM) as is recommended by one of the "sticky". The results of with are attached as .txt and replicated below. The "\\?\globalroot\Device\_max++>\7F78B1C45x86.dll" was highlighted red in the scan results.

Appreciate the assistance.

Earlier, I tried to open one of my PDFs with Acrobat 10... nothing. Thinking I hadn't actually clicked the PDF correctly, I tried again. Then a few more times (the software variant of "percussive maintenance"). Finally I tried simply opening Acrobat itself, thinking there was something wrong with the file associations. Nothing. I open up task manager to find that when I try to launch Acrobat, acrobat.exe pops up for a brief moment, and then disappears. There are no error dialogs or anything, the application simply closes immediately.

So, I try opening the PDF in Firefox using file://drive:/path/. Nothing, again. No problem opening the containing folder (on an external hard drive), but clicking the link to the file results in nothing happening. Open with Adobe Reader X? It works perfectly, of course!

This is a recent install of Acrobat X Professional (exactly 1 week, today) on Windows 7 Home Premium. This is a fresh install, not an upgrade. The PDF is over 2 years old (not that other PDFs work, mind you). Acrobat worked when I tested it after installing, so something has changed, I just don't know what.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

((I hope this is the right area; if not, let me know and I will fix it)).

During the last few days or so, my Norton AV 2008 has been acting up; it tells me via the little orange exclamation point that I need to run the weekly scan or update my definitions, which is does every week. This week, however, it refuses to open whenever I click on the icon in my tray. I went through Program folders and tried to open it through there, same thing. The hourglass icon appears, but it won't open. I restarted my computer several times, and it still persists. I do have Trend Micro, because it came with my software, but had to purchase Norton because my school's network refuses to accept any computer onto the network not protected by Norton. I shut Trend off whenever I turn it on, so they don't interfere with one another.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I searched on the internet, on the Symantec support page, and so on, and couldn't find anything. :/

:/Click to expand...
Hi cayt_lyn,

It sounds like you either have an infection, software conflict or there is some corruption in your installation of Norton AntiVirus. Please remove any other antivirus applications from your computer to rule out a software conflict as the cause of the problem.

The first thing I would suggest is that you restart your computer into Windows Safe Mode, launch Norton and then run a "Full System Scan" from there.

If you still can not launch Norton, the e... Read more

I copied a free software program, which runs well under my ME PC, to my secondhand XP PC. When I tried to run the setup file a message appeared saying that the Administrator had set Policies which would not allow the program to run. I have already scanned the program for viruses with Avast!

I am the ONLY user of this machine and I suppose I am therefore the Administrator (horrible word!). Presumably this policy was set by an earlier Admin. but I don't have a clue how to change the policy. There is no network connected.

Please help.

Hello there,

First off, I have no clue about anything.

Secondly, I have followed all commands that this forum has asked, along with what others who directed me here have told me to do.

So for a while now, Trend Micro has not been working. It will NOT open. This has been since a friend of mine wanted to put some movies onto my computer via his portable HD. When he plugged it in and started transferring the files, the computer crashed and went to that horrid blue screen. He insists it was my computer not coping with the awesomeness of his HD. He then tried to do the same thing but onto our portable HD. THAT WENT BUST!!. In short, went we plug our PHD onto the computer the computer crashes and we cannot format the HD.

So what has happened. Has his HD had a virus on it that transfered to our things and killed them or what? And if so, how do I fix?

Have attached reports along with HiJackThis. Hope you can help me and that I havent missed anything out!

Thanks!

hi, I've been infected by some Chinese adware and trojan (mostly Chinese I think) and I ran Ad-aware, Spybot, TrendMicro's anti-virus, I also researched all lines on my HijackThis log and fixed all baddies. But many of them continues to come back when I reboot the computer. Also, there's a ad-ware folder called gentad that's in my C:\ folder and I couldn't remove it. Everytime I try to delete it, it would say gentad.dll, which is one of the items in this gentad folder, is in use and can not be removed. One problem I've been experiencing is that I CAN' BOOT INTO SAFE MODE. I would hit F8, select Safe Mode, but the computer would then boot up in normal mode no matter which Safe Mode choice I select.I have IE windows pop up every so often and I get IE pages on my desktop too. Hello.

First of all, I posted here because it's the more likely situation to be causing a bad functioning in my computer.

I've been noticing that games of which I have more then the basic recomendations run too slow for my computer, which is not a bad machine. I thought: "Maybe its too full, running slow thanks to alot of occupied space." But if I entered Flash Game sites, like, for example, www.newgrounds.com or www.minijuegos.com the simple and basic flash games would run slow. And I think its too wierd.

I have a Windows XP Professional and Service Pack 3, and my system is:

Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz
3.38GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2243NW

I hope anyone can help me computer run these aplications (and maybe others I haven't noticed) better.

Thank you.

I soon found out that it had none and i gt infected. So i went and downloaded avast antivirus and did a scan.

The scan found over a hundred files infected so i quarantined them and i don't know how to delete them.
avast said the names of the infections are "win32:rootkit-gen, win32:malware-gen, and win32:adware-gen".

Im not very computer savy and im new to vista so i'll patiently wait for help before i proceed any furher.

Hi guys

To be honest, I'm not sure how this happened.
Lately my computer has been acting oddly. Among other things:
Firefox is constantly crashing
IE freezes up; previously viewed pages pop back up after being exited
I cannot access Microsoft Automatic Updates
No matter how many times I used MBAM, AntiSpyware, or AVG, the problems always regenerate themselves

AVG has said that I have a rootkit that keeps coming back, and AntiSpyware says I have hundreds of Adware Tracking Cookies that also keep re-occuring

In addition, sometimes my computer refuses to let me access my anti-virus programs
I apologize for being vague, I'm not computer-literate at all
I'll try to be more specific after I get some advice/questions

Any help would be greatly appreciated
My stepfather lost his job this Christmas, so we can't afford to take my computer in to get fixed
I need to try my hardest to get this fixed by myself

Thanks

Hi all,

I've just come back from a week vacation without using my computer, and I've noticed there are a couple of things wrong. For one, to write this I'm using IE, which isn't my go-to browser. Problem is, my programs just started to refuse to open. I have no idea why.

I logged in 2 days ago and noticed some of my programs such as Google Chrome and Discord just refuse to open, no process is shown in Task Manager, and when I try and re-initialize them again it does the same thing, which is really frustrating. I scanned for viruses with my anti-virus, Kaspersky, and it said there was nothing wrong. A couple nights ago, updates were installed, but I have no idea what could have happened. I tried Windows 10 a couple months ago, didn't like it, reverted to 8.1, got rid of GWX, but when I came back from my holiday it was right back there in the tray. I have no idea what happened? All I know now is that nothing is working as it should be and I'm very angry.

I've been reading around and some of the options I had were refresh and or reset, and when I try to initialize any of them, they don't work. It's weird because before I left this option was perfectly fine. It's telling me I need installation media, which I don't have. I got this computer 6 months ago. I honestly have no clue what to do, I'm just really annoyed with this and it looks like I'm at a dead end when it comes to this stuff. Help would be appreciated.

hi all,
I'm having a problem opening a website with my desktop. I am a member in good standing on the site and until 2 days ago, everything worked fine. I can still access it via my laptop with the same internet connection. That tells me my issue is machine based and not website or connection. I have tried several browsers, Chrome [default], FF, Comodo, and even Opera, all with the same result.
When I enter the site addy, the browser displays the site logo on the tab with the regular error message 'this connection was interrupted', and "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset."

No amount of refreshing/reloading brings different result. I have disabled antivirus/firewall and tested with same result. Cache and browsing data have been cleared, and the only extensions on chrome have been disabled. I have run CC cleaner to tidy things up. Router has been reset as well. The machine seems to function fine and fast with all other sites and as I stated, I get the affected site and login fine with my laptop simultaneously along side the one with the desktop error message.
Thanks in advance for your assistance !

Hello,

My husband bought a Dell running Windows Vista and we installed MS Office 2003.
We have created 3 user profiles on Vista - husband - me - and son.
My son wishes to use MS Outlook for email but the program refuses to even open to permit setup.
I thought the problem might be parental controls so I turned them off (temporarily), logged him out and then relogged him back in. Still get the same error message, as follows:

"Unable to open default email folder. File access is denied. You do not have permission to access the file C:/Users/(husband's name)/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.pst."

Why on earth is Outlook trying to access the email file belonging to a different user profile in Vista? How can I persuade Vista, or Outlook, to let me set up a separate email account in Outlook for my son?

Thanks in advance for any help you can supply with this annoying problem.

This has suddenly started to happen since yesterday. I'm on through a college internet connection through the college proxy. Every other thing works well, it's just GMail PLUS the entire google login system which refuses to work.

If I open Gmail in Chrome, I get a blank page, with loading in the tab name and "Sending Request" in the status bar. Then after a while:

This webpage is not available
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because mail.google.com took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.
Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
Add Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall's or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go to the wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood > Change proxy settings... > LAN Settings and deselect the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.

Last night around 2am (4/5/08) my Vista decided to install a few updates and reboot itself. Upon booting back up, I was severely dismayed to discover that my start menu refuses to open, and at least one other (seemingly random, and non-Windows) file had been deleted.

The start menu issue seems to be the most pressing problem, anybody have any ideas?

I attempted a system restore, which was successful, restoring back to 4/3/08, but the issue persists. It very well may have been a corrupted update file, but I'm not sure of how I would verify that or remedy it.

A:Start menu refuses to open, other various issues...

I've also noticed that, although I can explore the start menu through a simple right-click, none of my programs are showing up under the "programs" folder. I have the standard Accessories, Administrative Tools, Maintenance, and Startup, but none of the other options I would otherwise be expecting.

I have a 1 GHz, 2GB RAM, XP Pro SP3 machine. I have been using Outlook 2003 SP3 for several years without any issues. I am not connected to an Exchange server. I do use Outlook to view my G-mail account.

The issue I have is when launching outlook I get the folloing messages:
"The data file from Gmail was not closed properly. This file is being checked for problems". The next message that comes up is: "The data file from Hotmail was not closed properly. This file is being checked for problems". Once these checks are done Outlook shows e-mail in the upper pane but no info in the lower pane. The folder list is shown. When the lower pane does show the content of the e-mail that was selected by Outlook the program closes it self.

This started about a week ago. I have not found any consistent results on how to fix this issue. How do I get Outlook 2003 working again.

Thanks,

Alan

A:Outlook 2003 refuses to stay open

Hi astiller

Your current Profile for Outlook 2003 may be corrupted, try creating a new Profile for Outlook 2003 then connect the original Personal Folders (.pst files) to the new Profile to see if the behavior persists.

With Outlook 2003 closed, create a new Profile,
Control Panel > Mail Icon
Change the selection to: Prompt for a Profile to be used

Show Profiles > Add
Recreate your e-mail account.

Start Outlook 2003 and select the new Profile.

Connect the original Personal Folders (.pst file) to the new Profile:
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Select the original .pst file and it should then appear, in the new Profile, in Outlook 2003.

Before you create the new profile, you may want to determine the location of your current Personal Folders (.pst files)
In Outlook 2003:
File > Data File Management > Open Folder button
Will open the directory where your .pst files are stored.

How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003
Let us know if that makes a difference, or not.

Okay, here's the problem from the beginning:

I am running on Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. I had upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 earlier this year and it worked perfectly up until about 2 weeks ago. It would freeze up everytime I opened it. Everytime I typed in a web address on the address bar and hit enter, a message came up saying that the webpage cannot be opened or something like that. I was like that to every single website I tried. So, cutting my loses, I uninstalled the Internet Explorer 7 and went back to Internet Explorer 6. But thats when the current problem arose. It would not let me open any links that required it to open in a new window or the use of javascripting to open a smaller window. Not even clicking on "New" then "Window" in the "File" menu or pressing Ctrl+N would work. At first it was bearable because I could just right-click, copy link and paste it in the address bar of another window I had to open manually from the shortcut in my desktop. But it still will not open links with javascript and some other links that need a new window. I've looked through dozens of support forums but nothing worked so far. But then again, nothing was specific to my scenario so I decided to leave me own post and see whats what. I hope someone can help me ASAP. It's really getting to me and I have important things to check in my e-mail and it uses javascripting to open new windows. Thanks and god bless!

I was forced to close something called y.exy earlier this morning, so I decided to look it up and I found that there are some topics on here addressing the problem. I tried updating my definitions for AdAware, but every time I tried I was told that I couldn't connect. I performed a Smart System Scan which found nothing really suspicious. However, I still experienced problems with pop-ups and Google redirecting to questionable sites. I then downloaded MalwareBytes, installed it, but when I try to have it open after the setup I get a message saying that the MalwareBytes.exe could not be found. I am at a loss here, and I was hoping to get some advice. Thanks :D

Using a straightened paperclip, push it gently into the tiny hole somewhere on the front of your CDRW. Keep pushing until the tray comes out far enough to grab it.
But I think the mechanism is faulty. Replace it, CDRWs are cheap.

I'm just wondering if this could be some kind of Adware, Spyware or Malware.

I've run Spybot S&D, and Adaware personal many times, and come up with nothing.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1. Under Organize->Folder and Search Options->Browse folders I have the radio button, "Open each folder in the same window" checked. However, Vista refuses to do so and opens each folder in its own window. This does not work well for me because I end up with tons of open windows and its a pain to close them. This behaviour just started. Yesterday it did not do this. This is a fresh install with only Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, Expression Studio 2, Adobe CS3 and InstallAware installed. Also worth noting is that if I right click on a folder, the default action of Open is in bold. If I click it then it will open the folder in the same window. However, every time I double click it opens a new window. Please help as I really don't want to have to switch to a third party file management tool over this. Thanks!

Hi Dasha, Welcome to 8 Forums.

Hi,
Google will no longer support new Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) connections from Windows PCs and tablets to sync your email, calendar and contacts from Gmail. If you've already connected your Google account to your PC running Windows 8 and Windows RT using the Mail, People or Calendar apps, you don't have to do anything. Existing EAS connections to Google accounts will continue to function.
If you are trying to connect a Google account after January 30th, 2013 to your PC running Windows 8 and Windows RT using the Mail, People or Calendar apps refer this article. How to sync Google services with Windows - Microsoft Windows Help

This could also be a good time to simply switch to Outlook.com, a new personal email service that is clean and intuitive, keeps your address book up-to-date with information from your favorite social networks, and includes powerful inbox management tools and so much more.

The C:\Documents and Settings link is actually only a junction point (symbolic link) now used for backwards compatibility of older programs that still reference it, and not a real folder that can be opened.

It was replaced by the C:\Users and C:\ProgramData folders in Windows 7 now.

Hope this helps,

Well I have wasted a day on this, so I might as well share it.

As you may be aware, 64 bit Windows 7 comes with both 32 and 64 bit Windows Media Player. However! for some reason, Microsoft, in their Infinite Wisdom, decided to make everything play in 32 bit only Media Player. You can change it around so that the shortcut on your Taskbar points to "Program Files" rather than "Program Files (X86)" but it will still open in 32 bit. Not only that, but you can't change Program Defaults to the 64 bit version! Effectively, the 64 bit version is just sitting there taking up space on your hard drive and not actually useful at all.

Now there used to be a simple Regfix for this with Vista, but Microsoft, again in their Infinite Wisdom have locked it out in Win 7.

Well after many hours of googling, and picking up little snippets here and there, I finally figured out how to do it.

So without further ado, here is how to make Windows 7 default to Media Player 64 bit:

1. Download "Windows Media Player Switch Script" from here: Unlock WMP x64 in Windows 7 x64 at Chris123NT's Blog

2. Extract the files to a folder of your choice and then run "set 64 bit ad default WMP" as Administrator (right click, run as Admin)

3. Reboot.

4. Now, (and this is the really fun part) Click Start>Default Programs. then click "Associate a File type or protocol with a program"

5. Go through every single Windows Media Player extension, and change it to &q... Read more

A:How to make WMP actually open in 64 bit. (sort of)

thanks for sharing, martin.

one question: is there any benefit to using 64bit wmp as opposed to its little brother?

(it's all academic to me anyway, as i'm a winamp man, but i can't help wondering...)

Hi

My PC got infected with xenroder, ISTbar and lots of other nasty things a few days ago. I downloaded Microsoft Anti spyware which removed them but then everytime I rebooted the computer more were detected.

I read a thread here this evening and followed the instructions:

http://forums.techguy.org/t342209.html

SO:

- I downloaded Adware SE and ran that, rebooted then
- ran spybot S&D, rebooted then
- ran spyware blaster.
- Also ran Microsoft antispyware for good measure.
- then ran paid subsription version of Norton Antivirus

all the above with latest updated definitions.

Finally- I have run Hijack this and generated a log file. Can someone take a look and let me know whether the machine is now clean? and if not, can you help fix it????

Thanks
Steve (here's hoping)

Hello,I'm not sure how I got infected but it just recently started as of 04/01/08. I keep getting a couple of different pop ups that state that my PC has been infected and that I need to install pc-Antispyware & pc-Cleaner in order to fix the issue. One of the pop ups is titled 'Security System Waring'. If I close that then every 20 minute or so there will be a yellow triangle with an ! point inside that will pop up in the sytem tray that says I've been infected. When I cicked the ICON it directs me to a webpage to install this pc-Antispyware & pc-Cleaner program. I've also been getting another pop up window, again every 20 or 30 minutes or so that almost looks like a Windows Security window that's titled 'Security System Protection Control Panel' that says I've been infected with a Trojandownloader.XS program and gives a link to remove the program and again it's directing me to the pc-Antispyware & pc-Cleaner site to install those programs. Finally there's a fourth window that pops up as well that at first glance appears to be an Install Wizard. It's labled 'System Integrity Scan Wizard'. It states that I may have window registry file errors and if you select the Next button it begins some install program. I've attached screen shots b/c I'm not quite sure how/when they decide to pop up. It happens every so often and it's never the same one all the time. This started about 2:00 or 3:00 PM on 04/01/08. HELP!

My document refuses to open - I have a large file indexed and referenced
that I have compiled since February this year for my studies. It is 300+
pages in total and it is vital for my exam in October. Word 2007 now
refuses to open it:

The Office Open XML file AS208 MY NOTEBOOK cannot be opened because there
are problems with the contents.
Location: Part:/word/document.xml, Line 2, Column: 890169

I desperately need help in solving this as I need the file for my revision -
the file was saved prior to the refusal to open.

So, I am in a state of desperation and have finally sunk to the level of directly asking a tech support forum for help. I throw myself on your mercy, internet citizens.

I have been working on a huge project in MS Paint. Yes, I'm aware that everyone but me hates MS Paint, but please don't tell me to use a different program. I'm using this one for a reason. My problem is that after editing and saving the file, paint now refuses to open it. I have spent months on this project and am about two hours from finishing, so this is quite aggravating.

This has happened before, but I managed to fix it. The file I am working with was originally a .PNG that I had created in paint. After editing and saving it, I received the message "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." I could still preview the file fine with Windows photo viewer or whatever the devil it's called, but I couldn't edit it. I managed to remedy this the first time by opening it in Fireworks and resaving it as a JPEG (choosing from the options, not manually). JPEG seems an inferior file type to use for this particular project, but that is a sacrifice I was willing to make to be able to edit it in paint. It worked fine after this for a while.

Now I am again receiving the same paint error message. It will still open fine in other programs, but resaving it as a new file (with any file type) no longer fixes the issue.

Hi,

This problem began a while back when my McAfee expired. The day it expired, before I downloaded more protection, I opened two email from two family members. Both had video clips and I played both videos. I don't know which one had the bug attached (or if either did) but after going through email and doing some stuff on Facebook (Facebook prior to email) I suddenly lost my background picture and it was replaced with a poorly written warning message (bad english/writing) stating my computer was at risk for Spyware and malicious... You get the drift. It immediately gave a pop-up to buy some "protection" against such malicious software/intrusions. Well, I knew (aside from the poor writing) that this was horse crap because I've heard of this scam before and I knew that my system was now under attack. I downloaded Norton's 360 30 day trial until I could figure out why my free McAfee through Comcast wasn't allowing me to download. I finally got that crap off my computer after much work with Norton and some work of my own. (No, I'm not a computer geek and probably know less than a fragment of what you all know here.) But, somehow I vanquished the demons. So I thought anyway...

The Norton expired and that day I tried to download the McAfee once again. On the first attempt it did not download successfully. It did, however, start up a new problem. I don't know if there is a correlation/connection or not, but at that time is when I started t... Read more

I am opening a report using criteria from a combo box. The user wants to be able to choose the sort order of the report. I added two radio buttons, one named optName and the other optNubmer. How do I work the choice into my open report code pasted below?
Code:

Private Sub cmdOpenIndex_Click()
Dim strReptCriteria
Dim bProcOk As Boolean

bProcOk = True
strReptCriteria = txtReptCriteria

If IsNull(Me.txtReptCriteria) Then
MsgBox "You must select a criteria!", vbExclamation, "Error"
txtReptCriteria.SetFocus
bProcOk = False
End If

If bProcOk Then
DoCmd.OpenReport "CloseOutIndex", acViewPreview, , _
"[ReportCaption] = '" & strReptCriteria & "'"
End If

Here is a visual to give you more of an idea of what I am doing:

Someone suggested (from another forum) that I use this at the end of my code but I couldn't get it to work.

[Reports].[CloseOutIndex].[OrderBy]=txtReptOrderBy

A:Open and sort a report with option box (Access)

That user was right, but you must then set the OrderByOn property for the report as well, to True. I personally don't do it that way, because I think Order By is pretty crappy, especially if you're using adp, where it doesn't work. I do it by opening the report's underlying query, resetting the SQL, and then opening the report.

But Order By should work in most cases. Let me know if you want me to post some code.

On my hard drive is the file C:\Windows\Prefetch\SVCHOST.EXE-3530F672.pf. It is an 18 KB file dated 2/9/05, which is about one month AFTER I purchased my computer.

I have Windows XP Pro on a Toshiba laptop.

My investigation into this started when my Zone Alarm Pro gave me an alert stating "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services trying to act as a server." It involved a file called svchost.exe.

I found the following at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP
Each instance of Svchost process [you see in Task Manager] launches a list of services. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Four or five instances of svchost.exe is normal. If you want to see what services are run by each Svchost process:

For XP Professional, using the Tasklist command:

Click Start, Run and type cmd

Type Tasklist /svc >C:\TaskList.txt

The TaskList.txt will contain the services list (launched by each Svchost process). Windows XP Home does not have tasklist.exe. Download a copy from here

Forget what is in prefetch, and if it botheres you empty prefetch and let it rebuild.

Svchost is a normal process running out of system32

If you are concerned

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE 1.05 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put

Hi, first time here,

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. 32 and 64 bit. I have Norton security suite that comes with my Comcast subscription. I scan pretty frequently and I also use CCleaner which works great. I am not having any problems with my computer right now but I have in the past. Something not only got past Norton it also was able to disable Norton. I got it going again fairly quickly but my computer wasn't the same. I did a complete restore and it has been fine. For some reason I still feel like there is something going on in my computer which there may not be. I've noticed some files that looked suspiscious but I can never know for sure so I won't change anything. One time I noticed 3 extra users and I was sure I was infected until I found out Nvidia adds these for updating.
My question is that when I was looking at the files in my registry, I clicked on internet settings then zone and the list expanded to about a page and a half of files with names having to do with sex and porn. They all had the arrow to open a sub folder with on every one was www. I ran Norton and superspyware and a search. Nothing is detecting these files. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ron

Hello,I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Is this a good program? And should it stay, or should I just get Spywareblastar, and Spy_bot S&D?

Thank You

A:Bazooka Spyware Scanner?

I had never heard of Bazooka before, but it looks nice. Spybot Search & Destroy detects a lot more spyware though, I wouldn't get rid of it for Bazooka.

A:Online Spyware Scanner

Hi, Guy!

I haven't used the application, but I do trust x-block. I also don't think that Mike Healen would get involved in anything second-rate.

The reason that I haven't introduced the service here is that I think recommending it is akin to "giving a man a fish".

When folks download Ad-aware, or Spybot, or both, set the configurations and run their scans, they have now been taught to do that properly. They can do it over and over again, weekly, we hope, with the only "outside" support being updates.

Also, with Spybot Free set to immunize or Ad-aware 7.0, they get some actual protection.

A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Greetings:I am somewhat new to this. I have always been able to solve the few problems I have with AdAware or Spybot. This time though, I am stumped. I installed HiJackThis and have looked through it to the best of my knowledge, but can't find anything. It seems like it all started when I accidently installed YourSiteBar. I have used their removel program but I still get popups. Here is my HiJack log. Folks,I have been trying off and on for 2 weeks to clean this machine. It is my brother in laws computer and used by his kids to play many on-line games. It came to me with a BSOD which I recovered from by removing Antivirus XP malware using Malwarebytes Anti malware. I subsequently cleaned about 30 infections off the machine. I have scanned it with AVG Free, Malwarebites, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, House call and Bit defender (online). Still It has a browser highjacker in both Firefox and IE v8. I am getting repeated virus alerts from AVG concerning iastor.sys and one concerning kxdiypod.sys. I have tried to replace iastor.sys by renaming it and copying a new version. Every time I mess with it, I get another AVG alert and it replicates itself. What's a good free spyware scanner that comes , already dowloaded with a certain amount of basic definitions already on it?. Kind of like what Avast does for antivirus.

The reason I ask is that I have a friend that can't get online with her NetZero dialup and I want to eliminate the problem being related to spyware. In other words, I want a scanner that doesn't need to be updated right anyway and just might find something.

By the way...could a virus or malware stop someone from connecting on a dialup connection? When I use the Netzero software it connects briefly to the internet but then the modem shuts down. I don't think it's a modem problem either because I queried the modem just fine and was actually able to connect with a connection I made myself from the new connection option in Windows 2000. However I could not get anything to come up on IE.

I also could not get online by using the Internet Connection Wizard. The one that connects you, using an 800 number. It also was cut off by the modem.
