Q: Progressive Devolution of XP Home Edition

? My advanced system log says that on July 20 the Protocol Handler could not be loaded , IEPH.RSSHandler. also, Entry in the Hash Map cannot be updated.Context: Windows Application System Index Catalog. Device not functioning (0X8007001f).
Since then, I've had dozens of "events", I can't open programs because Windows can't find the .dll or .exe, and I can't get on the net. Not on that computer, anyway.
My son says it's a virus, I thought it might be a mechanical thing (as in "device not functioning").
I can use the CD player to burn and view files on Win Media Player, and I've been saving my records/videos to disc to prepare for erasing the hard-drive. But I keep thinking it's a mechanical thing, and I am being stubborn about it. But not so stubborn as to not be able to re-enter cyberspace.

Thanks for your help. I'm off the the glossary to see what is a HASH Map?

I'm just wondering. Im using Avast! Home Edition for free, but my friend says that a paid antivirus/intenet security is better, he thinks that a paid is "Full" protection, eventhough i told him that avast! was aleady internet security and also an antimalware, and behavior scanner. I disagree with him but he keeps nagging, so im asking you guys what you think.

A:Would you guys go with Avast! Home Edition or Kaspersky Paid Edition

Both suites are okay. Avast! and Kaspersky have both high detection rates but it all comes down to the system resource usage. I have seen many posts that Avast! had a lighter load on a user's system. Kaspersky on the other hand seems to be heavier than Avast! It all comes down to your own decision though...

You can't legally download XP.
HP will sell you an install disc at a reasonable price.
What kind of errors are on the old disk? It may be repairable.
It's possible to copy the contents of the old disc to the new one.
Tell us more and there may be a solution.

I am trying to remove or change my name from on a laptop in the Windows 7 Home Edition Registry. I found I cannot remove it or change it in the HomeGroupProvider ServiceData in the Registry. If you try to Delete it or change it I get - Unable to delete all specified values - any ideas??? it show up in three different ones. NetworkName , Owner and OwnerMachineName and three different HomeGroupProvider ServiceData places.

Do not want to reload Windows 7 since do not have Discs and Activation number on bottom is too worn to see it all.

There should be a way to access these values and change in the Registry. Something is not allowing it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would like to Sync files (over an Ethernet Crossover cable, or thru a wireless network) between a Vista Home Premium laptop and an XP Home Edition laptop. As I read the help file in Vista, the Home Premium version does support Sync over a network. I haven't been able to figure out whether XP Home Edition version supports Sync over a network.

1. Does anybody know if I can Sync between these two systems?
2. If it is not supported directly, does anybody know of a workaround?
3. If there is no workaround, can I find freeware that will do the job.
4. If no freeware, what can I (do I need to) purchase from Microsoft?

A:Sync Vista Home Premium with XP Home Edition

I have seen a few inexpensive apps that file sync between computers. I would setup a shared hard drive on one computer and mapped the drive on the other computer to share files.

A:[SOLVED] XP Home Edition Vs Home ULCPC

Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC
This edition of Windows XP Home is intended for sale with certain "low-cost" netbooks and will appear labeled as "Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC" (with "ULCPC" standing for "ultra low cost personal computer").

A reinstall disc specifically for a Lenovo PC will not work on a Dell because it has specific drivers for that particular Model # PC. A product key is tied to the particular CD you are using. So, installing a different version of XP and using a product key from a different manufacturers CD will not work. You can order a Dell Recovery CD from Dell:

Alright, so I recently bought a brand new computer, and now I'm wanting to sell my laptop. Before I sell it, though, I want to do a complete wipe of the hard drive, and reinstall a fresh (legal) copy of Windows XP Home Edition, using the disc that originally came with my laptop.

So far, I've been able to completely reformat the hard drive, and setup loads just fine. The problem I run into, is when the OS is reinstalling. Here's what I get:

The thing is, I've got that exact disc in the drive already. This is the same disc that was originally bundled with my laptop. The OS and SP1 weren't on two separate discs. They were both put together on 1 disc, so there couldn't possibly be another disc to use. I've spent about an hour on Google, and finally found what I believe to be the solution to this situation. It comes straight from the horses mouth too:

The problem, though, is that pretty much everything on that Microsoft support page is foreign to me. Use a Windows 98 Startup disk? Where do I get one of those? Copy files using the command prompt? Yikes. Now I have a fairly good understanding of Windows and computers in general, but I never had to go through this much of a hassle the last time i reinstalled XP Home on this very same laptop.

I'm wondering if there might be a kind soul who might be able to give me a step by step of what I need to do to get XP Home reinstalled on my laptop before i sell it. Any i... Read more

I have two computers and I have decided to connect them together for file and printer sharing.

I want connect my XP Pro machine to my XP Home Edition Notebook. Both machines have built in ehthernet ports on the mother board and I have gone to PC world and bought a "pc to pc" Connection cable -(CAT5e Patch Cable - #R7J304).

Now I have setup both machines LAN connection as follows:
XP Pro - Desktop:
Name Service Provider: Windows Locator
It has a unique machine name and is on the MSHOME group netowrk

XP Home Edition - Notebook:
Name Service Provider is: Windows Locator
It had it's own unique machine name and is also on the MSHOME group network.

I have selected the folders/directories I want to share on each machine and the light on the ehternet port on XP Pro is on -(a green/yellow light or lime green). The light on the notebook is also on -(a sort of orange light).

I also noticed that on each machine there is a icon above the LAN icon called Incoming Connections. However on the icon on the XP Home Ed. Notebook the incoming connection icon has No clients connected in dim grey colour.

I can access and veiw the MSHOME and shared folders on the XP Pro Machine but I can't do the same on the XP Home ed. - for my notebook. Yet a bubble alert pops up on both machines acknowledging the presence of the LAN connection????

Then... it said XP is shutting down - and it did. A normal shutdown occurred. I don't have a clue why this happened. It seemed completely automated. I did not invoke any of those actions.

You may also want to download spybot, update it and run it from:

You may also want to go to the control panel and to add/remove programs and see if you patch 811493 installed - if you do try uninstalling it.

I'm a newby to this site, which I discovered yesterday after having a lot of trouble with some Trojans on my pc.
Everything seems to be clean now, but my XP Pro (SP2) suddenly is a Home edition now, although it still behaves and looks like the ususal Pro edition.

After startup a popup "About Windows" appears and the system inofrmation also says that it's a Home edition.

I've use Spy Seeper to clean the machine , but first I tried to do things manually, also by deleting some keys and values in the registry (with the help of this site )

I am working on my boss's computer. I need to know what does the random reboots of this computer mean?

I am also at the moment running Ad-Aware SE Professional on the computer. I will also install Spybot S&D after the scan is complete, then install Spywareblaster, as well as several other programs.

Then I will post a HJT log because I want to be absolutely sure that the computer is completely clean before I install Service Pack 2 on the computer. (I was literally amazed at the fact that this computer is still able to stand without SP2 installed! ) Then after confirmation that the computer is clean, I will install what I just spoke of, and any other updates it needs to be fully protected.

(Anyone know how to strip out IE6? I'm not sure if I should install IE7...)

(Also, the computer is my boss's, but I've been given complete control of the computer, fixing it and such until it works correctly, after which, I will show him how to keep the computer clean, and from there, turn over control to him.)

A:Win. XP Home Edition

Usually an overheating problem, also check your memory.

As for IE6, its not worth the trouble of removing it. You can however disable it from being used to access the web. If you are looking for a browser to use, try Firefox. Don't waste your time running "several other programs" either. I would go ahead and install SP2, run A virus scan, and run A spyware scan, then post your HJT log.

I've spent some time online looking for definitive differences between the pro and home editions of XP. Aside for learning that Pro is for business and will carry networks I can't find any substantive difference. However, I am unclear if I can maintain a website using Home edition.
Aside from all the verbiage on this chestnut topic I would be pleased to hear from anyone who really does know the actual difference.

A:XP Pro v XP Home Edition

From the Which Windows XP version should I buy? article (I'd anyhow suggest you reading through Sections D & E at least):

8. You need a personal Web Server. Windows XP Home does not include the IIS Web server 5.1 software found in XP Pro.

And YES, one who depends on his/her computer's OS, needs the Pro version rather than the Home one, IMHO - for it provides far superior control to the user.

Most of the time when I boot my HP laptop, it takes forever for it to load -- it takes forever for the icons on the desktop to load and when they do, i get system/IE/Windows errors and the regular "send" or "dont send" issues. Plus, I can't even burn cd's again as usual. The system is ridiculously slow and I can't even perform "Windows Update" -- it gives an error. Additionally, I have tried Windows System Restore, but that does not seem to help the issue. I'm currently running in "Safe Mode with Networking" just to be able to send you this form. I have also run Adaware, Registry Mechanic and an antivirus software, and the programs detected a bunch of errors, worms, and viruses which I was able to clean partially.

I would greatly appreciate some immediate help.

Thank you.

A:win xp home edition cd?

The answer is... It will not work. Your friend's CD will not install with the key that is on your current PC. If you use your friend's CD to install, you will have to activate the product and since your friend has already installed it, it will not work because it has already been activated on your friend's PC.

Most of the computer manufacturers can provide you with a replacement set of restoration CDs at a reasonable price. Who is the manufacturer of your PC?

You cna boot from the Pro disc . . delete partitions and then create new ones and install.

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

You will need the product Key that matches the disc you use . . Home, Pro or MCE

Hi Guys

I have installed a new 250Gb Hitachi HDD to my PC, but when I try to load the XP Home Edition OS I get a blue screen which says 'windows setup' and it goes no further.

I have set the jumpers as Master as I would like to use the old drive as slave backup!!

A friend seems to think it could be to do with the BIOS recognising the new hard drive.

I can see the 250.1Gb in the 'IDE HDD Auto detection'

In the CMOS setup Pri Master I thought 'Auto' would detect the HDD but it does not.

The only other option seems to be User to set parameters of HDD but I do not know how to do this.

Please help!!

I am trying to connect to two computers that are connected to a Linksys Router using Remote Assistance on a Vista Home Premium Machine. I get the error message that the person you are trying to help may have closed remote assistance. I get the same message when trying to connect to either machine. I am guessing the problem is with a setting in the router, but I don't know what setting.

A:Remote Access from Vista Home Premium to Vista Home Premium and XP Home Edition

You should forward the ports on the router to the IP Addresses of the machines, that you want to connect to. On Symantec PC Anywhere, it is ports 5631 and 32, on Windows remote desktop connection it is port 3389 that needs to be forwarded.

Hi, again people. Have been considering building a computer. I have read and reread post after post, searched NewEgg for all the pieces and came across this in MS Software OS's.
1. Windows XP Home edition Full Version (includes SP 1) OEM must be ordered w/hardware. Price $93.00. "See it" shows a Manual and 2 views of software CD's
2. Windows XP Home edition full version, Retail Box, Price $189.00. "See it" shows only a box, no mention of SP1.
My Question: What is the difference? Anybody know?

A:XP Home Edition OEM or Retail?

When purchasing software that lists in the system requirements XP Professional, will it also operate in the XP Home Edition format? The software is the Generations Family Tree. I have the 8.5 version and the newest upgrade for this program is GFT Plus. The box lists XP Professional but not XP Home Edition. Thanks for your help.

A:XP Home Edition/XP Professional

I think it would run. Can't think of a feature not included in XP Home that would be needed by a geneaology program. Anyway, if the developers of the GFT are smart, why would they create a program, obviously aimed at the comsumer market, that doesn't run on XP Home, the consumer version of Windows ???

Here's a link that explains some of the differences between XP Home and XP Pro

As you can see, they are mostly related to security/networking, so I don't think it would be a problem for GFT

Hi, this is about a laptop computer model Gateway NV53, I was trying to remove an antivirus by the name "AV8". I did that in two steps, first from the task manager by clicking on "AV8.exe" and I click on end process, second from the c:\ drive with the del command "del av8.exe". Now after I am done, I restart the laptop it gives me the option to type my password. From there it gave me a blink screen, and the icons do not display on the screen. I see the light of Hdd like it's loading something, but nothing never display. I can access the Task manager, shut down, restart by using the task manager commnd, but nothing at the screen. So, is there any possibility you can help me have those icons back at the screen. It's blink only the mouse I see. Thanks in advance.

I'm running XP Home edition on a Cyberpower custom system but cannot seem to get my microphone to work. I seem to be lacking the necessary speech software which, I believe, is Microsoft's wordnet.msi. It isn't on my discs and I can't seem to find it on Microsoft's site. Can anyone tell me where/how I can get the software, or provide any other words of wisdom? Thanks.

A:Microphone and XP Home edition

In what applications are you wanting to use the microphone?

wordnet.msi is totally unknown on Google, therefore I would suggest that its not quite correct?

XP has most functions built in, however it will require you to have the right hardware and configuration. Have you enabled the microphone in the advanced properties of Volume Control?

Am attempting to setup VPN (server) on my home system. Have looked at numerous notes/forums and none provide a definate answer to the problem I am experiencing. So before I abandon the XP integrated VPN server and adopt another option perhaps you gurus can point me in the right direction.

When setting up New Network Connection -set advanced connection - Accept incoming calls, it is at this stage that it will stall with the hourglass for aprox 2 mins then give the error :-

Routing and Remote Access Service was unable to start, look at event log, this say error 0x154(340).

Have attempted to start all services as suggested by numerous forums but continue to fail at this point. Some even suggest enabling NETBIOS protocol or that some software items from INETSRV directory are missing. As mentioned cannot get anything to solve said issue which happens at the same point every time.

Please advise, any help would be appreciated as I do not really want to move away from a facilty which should apparently be integral.

Many thanks in advance

Firstly, thanks for reading my plea for help.

I have a custom built computer, given to me from a friend. I added my C: drive into it and began dual booting between the two drives. The drive I added operates on Windows Vista, the original drive operates on Windows XP. Everything was fine for the first few months until the Windows XP wouldn't allow me to log in anymore. Whenever I attempt to log in, the system immediately logs me out and takes me back to the log in screen. This applies to Safe Mode as well, even when logging in as Administrator. I am the only user. I performed a Disk Cleanup from the Vista drive, a check disk in Command Prompt, and scanned the drive with the following Anti-Virus software:

- avast! Free Antivirus
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Windows Defender

I've run out of ideas and would like to know if anyone has a solution to this problem. Thank you.

Can I buy a Windows Xp Home OEM CD an can it be used to restore the OS on either one of the computers if the computer crashed or in case anything else bad happened, thanks.

A:Buying XP home OEM edition

You can recover the product keys for Windows products on your computers by using magic jelly bean tool

You might also consider creating a "clone" drive backup of each system so you can restore either hard drive. EASUS has a freeware disk copy/clone tool

And in answer to your question, yea, you could also buy an XP Home CD (or have a friend's? you can use a friend's CD if you have your own product key)

btw.. i've never done it myself, but you can also try simply building your own XP home installation CD. See this link

Hello everyone - hope all is well and that hopefully some of you fine people can shed some light on the most annoying problem I currently have!

Basically, a couple of people that i work with have been provided with a laptop complete with Windows XP home Edition I dont know why, before my time!!

anyway, the problem has arisen that they cant fully network two machines together. If he / she connects their laptop to another running XP professional or Windows 2000, then he / she has no problems reading or copying to / from that machine. However the XP Prof / 2000 machine cannot access the XP Home edition machine, indicating that you do not have the correct permissions. Now, being a Network Administrator i understand how to set permissions, how to enable file and print sharing etc. All this i cannot do with Home edition, there is no permission options. v.v.v.v.v. frustrating!

Also, XP home edition seems incapable of joining a domain?! workgroups only! why is this?
So, is there a patch i need to install XP home with or is the only option to upgrade the system to XP Professional?

Any help from you guys will be massively appreciated!!!

Big thanks in advance

A:Networking XP Home edition

Ok...welcome to the world of xp home in the workplace

They deliberately left out the business networking functions (domains) from XP home so you would have to buy pro. So you will never be able to log into a domain using the XP home like you want to .

There is a trick to get the security permissions dialogs showing in Home. Boot into safe mode and do the permission there. Also make sure you have users with the same passwords as the users on the domain set up on the home machine or they wont be able to log in

Although the Lavalys site and other sites show the latest version of Everest Home Edition to be 1.51.195, there are 2.00 versions available. In fact, the most current version is 2.00.269.

The best way to obtain and keep track of the latest release of 2.00 is to go to and type in "Everest Home Edition 2.00". It will display several links with different 2.00 version numbers, so you'll have to look for the link with the most current version.

Once you download and save the ZIP file, unzip it into the C:\Program Files\Lavalys\Everest Home Edition folder, then allow it to overwrite the current files. Once you do that, opening the program will display the new version number in the lower left corner.

I've been using version 2.00 for awhile now, and it seems to work just fine.

Hello gililu

If it will not boot into Safe Mode either I think you should check for a RAM problem

If you have more than one stick of RAM swap them over or take one out and try again with only stick #1. If it does not help or makes things worse swap the sticks and try again with only stick #2. Running with one stick at a time will identify if you have a bad stick. Try moving the RAM to a different slot as well.

You can put either of these free programs on a floppy and test the RAM. Let them run for hours to do many passes if you can

Most likely the files needed to set up your network are already on your drive. When it asks for a path to a filename, try inputing c:\windows\ or c:\windows\system32\ or c:\windows\system\

windows systems are bad about asking for the CD even when the needed files are already there.

Hi Everyone,
Firstly let me say I Know nothing if not less about computers.I do not know terminology any help that can be given will be extremely appreciated.
Story is ,our son who has just turned 10 in June has had an extremely rough
year.He has had to endure 2 blocks of chemo,10 days of radiotherapy, hairloss
and a central line which was thankfully removed from his chest yesterday after 6 months.
2 days ago the laptop he's always used scrolled down as if closing a page taking
all his icons with it and just leaving his much loved car desktop image.I said don't worry just shut it off and restart it.
What happens is we start it,it quickly shows the 2 pages which are black screen
& white writing then goes to the black screen with the the Windows XP Home Edition and loading bar.It keeps loading on this then goes back to the 2 black screens with white writing then back to loading page again and keeps doing this,
on and on.
So put in Windows XP Cd and follwed instructions given on this site about booting
from cd.
Follow instuctions by pressing R to setup windows xp then next blue page agree to accept then installation begins.Starts loading then a message reading :Setup cannot delete the file rasddui.cnt. This error will not prevent setup from completing succesfully. Then gives the option ESC (recommended)to skip deleting the file.Which I did after trying the retry option.I then had to do this with another 30 items before it would continue... Ok well I was just fixing my cousins computer. It had alot of viruses and just junk on it since she downloads alot so she agreeded that we should reinstall the OS just to clean everything off. I personally have done it before and know wut to do so I did it.

She had the XP CD but it was a pirated one, it works but now the comp asks that u have to activate the key within 30 days. Not exactly sure wut will happen if u dont..

But the whole XP package costs like ?170 (UK), thats a lil over 300$$

It is expensive.

Another problem is the sound device, Its all redone so we dont have all the drivers on here. How do we go about getting sound drivers? Tried and even tried searching google for sound devices but no luck..

Can anyone help? thnx

I restarted the computer and the welcome screen comes only with the Limited account, but I don't see the administrator account anymore. Can anyone help me to fix this?

Try pressing F8 while your computer boots. It will give you a menu with the option for Safe Mode.

Choose that and then it should prompt you for a username and password. Try entering the accuont information manually there.

I have had my power management set to hibernate after one hour for several months now without any problems until recently. Now it sometimes does but often stays running. I also cannot hibernate or standby manually from the Start/turn off computer. The screen momentarily flashes and the pc remains running. I have installed several programs recently but did not notice any problems after each installation. This morning I restored the pc to August 23 which was before I installed any programs and certain;y before this problem started.
This has not helped and I still am unable to hibernate
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I am using an emachine with WXP Home edition, sp3.

I can play CD's, listen to Internet audio, etc. There are sounds when my computer goes idle and I bring it up with my password. There are no sounds on startup or shut-down.

There used to be sounds when I received emails, but there are none now. The printer used to make a sound on initiating and shutting down, but those sounds are not there. The sound asterisks in Sound Control are properly checked. Why don't I have sounds?

A:sound on Wxp home edition

A belated reply. If the sounds are checked in the Sounds/Program events, have you checked that the actual wav files exist and play as they should. They are in Windows/Media.

I had a problem on one PC where I could not stop a sound no matter what, so I made a silent wav, renamed it with the offender's name and replaced the offender. Still sounds but 0 volume!

Yesterday, my friend asked me to propose her any good antivirus. Normally, i would propose avg bcoz i use it on my portable computer and it works very good. But i've read on the tutorial here about avast! which is free so i say, why not try this one. So i propose her that.

One hour later, she said that her computer cannotconnect to the net anymore. I thought maybe she make some mistakes, so ask her to restore here computer. But unfortunately, she said that after she did that, the computer said that nothing's change. The restoration failed. So, i don't want to waste her and my time, i asked her to just reformat all (it's hard to help someone just by the phone). And that's that.

But to my suprise, i've tried the antivirus too myself this morning, and the same thing happened! My internet connection is totally screwed. I did everything, until i was about to give up and wanted to reformat my computer. This is because nothing's changed even after deleting the antivirus. Lastly, i reinstalled all my wifi driver (configure everything!) and fortunately, it works.

My question is, what the hell happened? Why did avast! changed all my internet connection values? Did anyone had the same experience like this?

Btw, from now on, to hell with avast! . Im gonna stick to avg.

P/s: Luckily, i've shisha to accompany me and to calm me down. If not, i'll be really piss off right now!

My motherboard's manual claims that the board can take up to 2 X 1 GB sticks of RAM. However, when I put 1 512MB stick in slot 1 and a 256MB stick in slot2, the PC crashes (BSOD). I've tried swapping the sticks round, but it makes no difference.

I can run each of the sticks on their own, and there are no problems! The weirdest thing is, that if I boot over into Ubuntu (Linux) with the two aforementioned sticks installed, the PC runs just fine!

Any ideas on this one?

I currently have a wireless, where the software that runs it needs ADMIN rights. Therefore when you boot the PC up as a Limited user the Network cannot be found. I need the Limited Profile/Policy edited for these accounts to be able to run this program to repair/find the network, so that i the administartor dont have to log on to find the network and then switch user for them to go on especially when you are needed to do it at 8.00 in the morning I do not want these users to have admin rights because they they will be able to install programs, and they users are 10 and 13 years old so they install loads of programs that make the computer crash!

Please Help

using Everest Home Edition..

How reliable is it? I downloaded as I was curious to the temps inside and they seem very unreliable.

What about the rest of the tests it does?

Is there any software out there that can accurately read my temps?

I kinda get OCD about things and I recently had a over heating problem with my DVD drive. Now I'm curious about the temps inside the case. I trust my MB bios readings on CPU temp core. But I am also aware that the MB has a sensor, the HDD has a sensor, and someone mentioned my ATI AIW 9600xt as a sensor.. Any leads on how to use these would be appreciated.

Err, forgot to add, since I have a new PS, I'm curious as to how to accurately check the voltages now. Thanks again

A:using Everest Home Edition

My experience has been that unless the software was designed to work with your exact motherboard, do not trust the temperature. The sensors are only a 20c device, and a real accurate temperature meter would cost about the same as your entire motherboard.

So treat any software derived temperature readings accordingly.

The BIOS would be the closest, but still assume an accuracy of up to +/- 10°C in my experience. Any other software has no guarantee that its identifying the right sensor, or what offsets or calibrations should be applied.

Also remember that the temperature is 100% dependent on the ambient room temperature as a starting point. If the room temperature rises 10°. so will all the device temperatures rise.

For voltages, I only trust a multimeter. Not software.
But if its not crashing, I would not bother measuring....

Hi there

i have a hp pavilion dv 6000 laptop and it is playing up bad.. it started having a few problems when i restarted it, and something prompted me to run a chkdsk because something was wrong when i restarted it, but i didn't know what that meant so i left that, and scanned the computer, and a few system 32 things came up but did not appear as threats, but under 'change'.. when i shut the computer down and turnit on again, it goes to a black screen where it asks if i want to start it in safe mode, two other safe modes, the last known good config. or start windows normally, but for all these, it goes to a blue screen for a second and then reboots itself.. if i press f10 at the first screen and check the hard disk it passes everything, and if i boot from the xp cd, and try to repair it, it says that it does not detect a hard drive..

any help with this would be much appreciated..
