Windows Genuine Notification, Genuine?

Q: Windows Genuine Notification, Genuine?

Hello all, and thank you for the oppurtunity to post.
I got a Pop-up, titled Microsoft Security Essential, which states I am infected by a Trojan. At the same time I was surprised to see a Windows Genuine notification , which stated that because I have made major changes since I first loaded Windows XP Pro, I now have to reactivate windows. Is this for real? The Microsoft notice will not go away no matter what I do, it sits in the middle of the screen and resists all efforts to close. If this is a Virus I am sure I will need Help in removing. Thanking you in advance,

Newagedave

Good evening

I have run the activation routine numerous times and been advised that my copy of Windows is Activated and Genuine yet after a while I get the 'Windows is not genuine' notification in the bottom righthand corner. I have found that right clicking on 'Computer' then selecting 'Properties' fixes it for awhile but it always comes back.

I selected the link provided by Noel on the first page, sadly it no longer works but I did find the iata_enu.exe file on their website. I ran the file but I receive a popup advising me that it is only compatible with Intel 800 series chipsets. I have a Gigabyte B75M-D3H Ivy bridge motherboard with an Intel CI5 3330 3GHz 6MB LGACPU. What can I do to resolve this?

Running XP ProOn start up message comes up stating you have a fake copy of windows. Dialogue box comes up with resolve issue now. This has not been clicked. Winlogon Registry key still has explorer.exe.
Malwarebytes does pick up the virus. Spybot start up has %system32\dimsntfy.dll this has been stopped from start up. The problem is how to eradicate the unactivated virus? This computer belongs to another of my Age Concern friends.

Hello,
I created an account because I need specific help with this problem.

Recently, I suddenly got a "Build 7601 - This copy of Windows is not genuine" on my Acer laptop. I have been using it for two years and this is the first time it happened.

I've been searching everywhere on the internet and this MGA report seems to be important in determining the problem.

Several months ago, my computer has been informing me that my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate was not genuine - despite the fact that a friend (an IT supervisor for a public organisation) had installed it for me in Januaryt 2010 after a hard disk problem. However, as it was not affecting me in any way, save for not allowing a background picture for my desktop, I left it.

Recently, my internet explorers, firstly IE, then Google Chrome have stopped working properly. Then today having done nothing out of the ordinary, I clicked on spotify, it failed owing to some Javascript problem, and my computer started showing error messages and restarted.

When I got back a windows recovery screen came up suggesting I need to repair certain aspects of my hard drive, and when it could only repair half of them directed me to a payment site to purchase an advanced type of windows recovery for around ?50.

Also, it is telling me that I have a hard drive failure, and has seemingly deleted the entire contents when I go on my computer; however, I am still able to access all my music through media player and use internet programs. There is also a message regarding my RAM memory usage being critically high.

Can anyone suggest how I can ratify these problems??

A:Incorrect 'Windows Not Genuine' Notification Messing Up My Computer

what came with that computer? did you get a disk or a certificate of authenticity when the friend installed it? If not, then there is a chance the copy they installed was not legal.

How to Tell

the only thing I can tell you is to try to activate it, if it does not activate, then call microsoft at the phone number it gives.

This mandatory critical update was released today(April 25, 2006) at the Windows Updates site.

Users of illegal or pirated copies of Windows XP - beware!

Microsoft announced that on Tuesday it will make Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) more bothersome than ever. A new update for WGA is now on the Windows Update website as a mandatory update. Once installed, your copy of Windows will be checked for validity. If your Windows installation is found not to be genuine, Windows will display a message telling you that “This copy of Windows is not genuine.” Windows will check and display messages on every boot as well as once an hour (or so). The new WGA tool also puts an icon in your system tray if your copy of Windows is not genuine.

Once notified and prompted to validate your copy of Windows, you will have 14 days to do so. If after 14 days you do not comply, you will not be able to download updates from the Windows Update website. Critical security updates will still be available via the Automatic Update built into Windows.

Microsoft hopes that by nagging users to get a genuine copy of Windows, it will cut down on piracy. We all know how much we despise pop-ups. Microsoft also urges anyone who purchased an illegal copy of Windows to report the counterfeit dealer. As a reward, Microsoft will (in most cases) give a free license to victims of counterfeit.

If you do not wish to validate your copy of Windows, there is a way to turn off the notifications by c... Read more

Interestingly enough...

One of my co-workers brought to my attention the new windows update (KB905474) was coming out soon and it will cause illegal copies of XP to notify the user that it may not be genuine. While we all try and use legal software, it can often be difficult in a work environment to do so. Concerned about this, i decided to check my WSUS server for the mysterious update.

After going through it several times i could not find it, but my test computer group (that i test updates on) recieved the update! I have searched everywhere and I can't find where it is getting that update from. Is this proof of microsoft's 'phone home' updating even though the computer is on a domain that uses a GPO to point Windows Update to the WSUS server?

Has anyone else seen this?

Hi

I have an ASUS notebook (U31F i5 with 4 GB mem) which until recently I used only occasionally. It has Legit Office 2010, but no CD/DVD drive. My desktop hard disk crashed in a big way so I am using the notebook as my main computer.

It has just recently started throwing up messages that my Windows Homw Premium (x64) is not genuine. It is gebuine OEM and activated (back when I got the notebook), and I have not tampered in any way.

I have had a look at some other threads on this forum on this issue, and so have dowloaded and run MGAdiag.exe, but to my inexpert eye, it appears to report everything OK.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

Hi - I do have a legal WinXP O/S on this new e-machine. But it has been so unreliable and complicated b/c of OEM software and probably some user error, I've had to reload it 6 times in 1 year.

I have Windows 2000 on my Win98 machine that is a decent machine but small monitor. I want to be able to use Win 2000 on the XP machine as XP is the last chance to get updates for Win 2000 as I understand.

I have a 2-gig flash drive U-3 which I think means it will work under 98. I do not have the disks for Ofc 2000, it came with the machine. I would like to copydown Ofc2000 to the flash drive so I can use it when needed on the XP machine.

After reading about Win Genuine Advantage, I don't think it will let me copy Office products without the disks. I do have a license number for 2000 which might be a multiple user; although my name is on it.

Will Genuine Advantage keep me from getting updates until I install it? Will it keep me from installing (copying over) Office 2000? (Microsoft doc only speaks to Ofc 2002 and later).

I also have a router and verizon services but I can't make up my mind between yahoo and microsoft. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Any ideas? Thank you.

A:Win Genuine Advantage Notification

You can not simply copy Office from one machine to the other - it won't work. You have to install it using the installation disks. The reason for this is that during the installation process entries are added to the registry that allow the program to function correctly. If you simply copy the files across to another machine none of the registry entries will be there.

Hello, I am using an Acer Aspire 5738G, which originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Later I got the free Windows 7 Home Premium update disc and never encountered any problem.

But since the last 1 month or so, I've been getting this 'Windows not genuine' message on a random basis. Microsoft Security Essentials says that it will disable itself within 30 days if the issue is not resolved. When I click on 'Resolve issue', an IE window is opened and takes me to Microsoft's website. When I do all the steps explained, everything goes back to normal and my Windows is again considered as genuine.

I am a bit worried, although I can always solve the problem, it still irritates me when I see the 'Windows not genuine' message. What could be the cause of the problem and what is the solution?

Thanks in advance.

Check the code with the online ID checker, make sure you are reading it correctly, there should be no reason it doesn`t work.

My HP Pavilion dv6 laptop suddenly has decided Windows is not Genuine. I put in the number on the bottom of the laptop and it says it is verified and good. But then after a while it goes back to saying it is not Genuine. I am out of the country at the moment, and I need to fix this in the meantime. I do Slui 3 and fix it, because if I try to go online to do this it won't finish it up, it just sits there loading. I haven't had issues with this laptop at all otherwise. Been using it for years. Bought it brand new. I do have virus protection but I am beginning to wonder if this is a virus? Or something like that? You would think that after entering the right number and getting the yes this is valid that it would be fine?

I have a MSDNAA account where I downloaded my copy of Windows 7 Pro, so its genuine, but when my computer is idle for sometime, in the lower right corner of the screen, sometimes appears the "not genuine" text with "evaluation copy etc etc". I go to Control Panel - System, then windows activates itself again, turning genuine again. This happened two times, yesterday and today. Is this a bug or what?

A friend of mine has a Windows XP Home Edition machine running Service Pack 2. She called me along this afternoon because she has been having problems with the machine for several weeks! Anyway this machine runs Norton Internet Security Center which was up to date as of a few weeks ago, but because of her problem it no longer seems able to complete its update process although she has 322 days left of her subscription. I tried several times but each time the update process terminated after doing some of the downloads. There is also an icon in her system tray area (right hand side) which refers to the non-genuine windows message and tells her to clickon it to resolve the non-genuine Windows problem.

The problem she has is that on boot up she gets a message saying that her version of Windows is not genuine (it is since it was supplied with the machine 4 years ago) and what is more it talks about Windows XP Professional whereas she has Windows XP Home. In addition to these messages which give her the option to resolve the problem now or later, she gets pop-ups at various times saying that her copy of Windows is not genuine, maybe counterfeit etc.

In addition when these problems started to occur she says she was no longer able to connect to the internet (she has a router and broadband) - I noticed that her connection was disabled so I re-enabled this and we can now connect to the Internet.

She also has problems with IE (think it is V8) whereby it comes up with an error aft... Read more

I am on Windows Vista and recently downloaded a student version, legally, of Microsoft Office 2003. I even paid for Microsoft to send me a backup DVD. For the past couple of days what of the so-called IMPORTANT Security updates is Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810), which is said to thwart software piracy. The problem is, every time I turn on my PC, the security update notification wants to install this update. I don't see a purpose for it as I have purchased my Office products legally. How do I change the settings in the Control Panel so that I am not constantly nagged about this update? I wish to ignore it. I don't see the point of downloading this update and I don't appreciate that it is even an option for me. I don't want to bypass ALL important updates but just this one if possible.

A:How to ignore the Office Genuine Advantage Notification Update

Windows Genuine Advantage - read this before turning it off.http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx" Validation may be required for your copy of Windows prior to obtaining downloads and some updates from Microsoft (for example, the Microsoft Download Center Web site and Windows Update) reserved for PCs running genuine Windows.Validation is also required in order for PCs running some Windows XP? editions to use the Windows Update Web site. All users can access security updates via Automatic Updates.Currently, online validation is supported for the following versions of Windows: Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition (excluding Windows XP Professional x64 Edition), Windows XP Starter Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition, all editions of Windows Vista?, and all editions of Windows 7?. The process for WGA is designed to be quick and simple. It does not collect any information that can be used by Microsoft to identify or contact the user. The validation process includes the following steps: Upon their first visit to the Microsoft Download Center, Windows Update, or Microsoft Update, users will receive a message requiring them to validate their Windows.Users will be prompted to download an ActiveX control which checks the authenticity of their Windows software and, if successful in validating Windows, stores a special license file on the PC for future verification. The validation process electronically checks for several known counterfeiting me... So I looked at "add/remove programs" list, but it wasn’t there.
I found other ways like these:

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I had a non-genuine copy of Ms Office installed on my computer, and have now purchased a genuine copy. Uninstalling the old (non-genuine) copy is impossible because it doesn't have an uninstaller, and it doesn't even show in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. So I just installed my genuine copy in a different folder in Program Files, so that the non-genuine copy wouldn't interfere with the newly installed genuine copy.

The problem is that even though I tried opening Ms Word or Excel directly from the newly installed folder and not from the old link to the old version, it still gives me a message (like before) that says "Get Genuine Office - This copy of Office is not genuine".

How do I get rid of the old (non-genuine) Ms Office if I am unable to uninstall it? Please don't tell me to work on the registry - I don't want to touch the registry because I'm not a computer pro, and I won't know what I'm doing. I just want to get rid of the message that says get genuine Office.

I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank you

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic OEM pre-installed, it was genuine and had COA on the bottom of laptop.
Accidentally, at that time I was 12 years old, so I don't know about 'crack', 'hack', software counterfeit, etc. . Thus, I thought my Windows was 'low', I want to upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate version with Windows Anytime Upgrade.

I searched key generator (keygen) on internet, I found it and generated the code (for Windows 7 Ultimate). Then, I pasted the serial number (product key) to Windows Anytime Upgrade. First, it was failed. So I cancelled the upgrade. But, when the laptop's shutdown and I turn it on again, it was upgrading to the Windows 7 Ultimate. How weird!

Now, I know the pirated / not genuine Windows is not safe, against the law, etc.

My question, is, I restored it to the genuine version of my Windows (7 Home Basic OEM) using my product key.
But I downloaded the setup using the Windows 7 Ultimate pirated (using keygen) that I told you...
Is my Windows become 'not genuine'?
After I restored it, It is very good, clean, doesn't contain virus or error, works perfectly. Then I upgraded it to Windows 10 Home.
Is it okay? Or I should buy the DVD to perform clean install so it is 100% clean?

Need your opinion, please...
Thanks

Hello,
Im in a trouble, so im hoping that you will help me.
I had a genuine windows 7 for a laptop a while ago, then i sent the laptop to my parents in a different country.
So i bought a new pc, without a operating system, driven by a lack of money i downloaded the old not genuine xp. Along came problems, unknown errors, bugs, etc.
Like for example, now i cannot start safe mode, i cannot make a new partition thru cmd or partition magic cause of somekind of file xmnt.exe is missing.
Sadly, i want to keep my bought games and programs, 'cause my internet is pretty slow, so it will take for ages to redownload/reinstall everything.

The question is: Can i upgrade my not genuine windows xp to windows 7 by buying it and installing like it's a common program keeping all of the programs/games/etc.?

Thank you in advance.

A:Upgrade not genuine windows xp to genuine windows 7.

Sadly if you are looking to regain stability your best bet would be a fresh install of windows 7
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

as outlined there you can do a fresh install with the upgrade disc, this would result in the loss of your games and programs, though do a straight upgrade from xp to win 7 without cleaning out the garbage is just going to make win 7 run horribly too.

I have a PC which has non genuine Win 7 Home Edition installed . I have purchased a retail Win 7 Pro Edition which I intend to install on the pc.. is it as simple as installing Win 7 through my cd drive and updating my system. My pc runs a dual core 3Ghz processor , 64 bit, and 8gig Ram. I'd like to try this installation myself ,,, but unsure of the difficulty in doing so, any suggestions would be appreciated. Tom

Hi guys,

first post in this forum: so this is just a copy of what I just posted on Win7 q&a, not expecting much from there so, here we go:

Quote:
just had this very same issue today. And yes, I downloaded Win7 from MS and got my key from MS. So today for some graphic corruption I had on the screen, instead of restarting the OS as usual, I launched task manager to try restarting dwm.exe...didn't work very well, I was always sent back to a non-aero display. So I rebooted, and just before login in, I got the message that "this windows version might be counterfeited and I should get a genuine (that sounds so mad lol, on a properly activated beta) I checked the box "asked me later", logged in, everything was normal, windows is still activated, and yes the beta watermark is there and as normal as it always was. As to hardware changes, lol, I'm running a laptop, and no, I didn't install win7 with the same key on any other machine and I didn't give my key to anyone.

I just want to know how this could happen. I've restarted a few times in between now and it didn't happen again...any idea?

thanks for your help anyone

A:Windows Seven not genuine ???

Hello Logos,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Sorry, I don't know what could have caused that. If it only happened once, then it just may have been a glitch during that one boot. Keep in mind that this is a Beta and there are going to be some quirks.

If it becomes a problem, let us know. We're here to help.

Enjoy your stay,
Gary

Hello all and please let me know if I'm not posting properly as this is my first post here.  This issue no doubt was caused by December's MS updates so I'm not sure if I should be following this post or another one.

I'm also experiencing the not genuine message on my uncle's HP Win 7 Home Premium x64 laptop.  As my user name states, I'm the one all the family calls when they have computer issues as I've been involved with computer repairs and technical support as a career for many years.   The only access I have to his system is remote as he lives on the other side of the US and when I checked his system neither KB3004394 or KB3024777 show up in the list of installed updates.  I downloaded KB3024777 from Microsoft's site and ran it manually (twice) but it still doesn't show up there.  I think it probably doesn't actually install because KB3004394 isn't there to remove, but that's just a guess.  The problem is that although neither of these updates are present, the not genuine Windows message appears after every restart, but right clicking "Computer" and choosing properties does display it's genuine after about 30 seconds.

Is anybody else experiencing this?  I've showed my uncle how to alleviate the problem for the time being by right clicking the computer icon and c... Read more

A:Not Genuine, Windows

First of all - welcome to BC !

Probably the simplest thing for you to do is to try activating this copy of Windows again. You will need the COA, the 25 digit alpha-numeric string that should be on a sticker on the computer somewhere. Click 'Start - control panel - System' and you should see a link 'Activate Windows'. If this doesn't work for you then you will need to give MS  a call. If this screen doesn't give you a free-phone number, google MS activation and you will find the number. It is usually a free call.

If this doesn't work, post back.

first time here.   I have an Acer Aspire that was purchased 3 years ago with Windows 7 loaded.   Now, Microsoft thinks I do not have a genuie copy of Window 7 and  gives me annoying messages. I contacted Microsoft and the support person saw that I do have an activated copy of Windows 7.   Still, I get the messages.    I tried restoring to previous copies, and I tried fixing the startup.     My goal is to fix this without wiping all my installed software, pictures, etc. from the computer.    Suggestions?    How bad can it get with Microsoft?     Do I need a CD from Acer?   How would I ask for that?

Thanks a million,    I really need to solve this.

A:Windows not genuine?

Hi Bill,Welcome to Community. The Windows Genuine Check is from MS, but could you please post the Screen shot of your System Properties.Get to control panel>System & security> system. Post the screen shot here, as there is no way that the OS could not be genuine, unless the Version is the same the OEM from Acer,. Cheers.

Your installation is counterfeit. I recommend purchasing a genuine Windows 7, then formatting and reinstalling - this will solve many of the problems you are experiencing.

Got the following message --- this copy of windows is not genuine build 7600.

I can assure you that my copy of windows 7 is genuine. Regardless, the message changed my desktop background to black and apparently I am now prevented from getting windows automatic updates.

What happened and how do I correct this problem?

A:Windows tell me it's not genuine

Interesting errors - but I think the background will show that the problem is a permissions problem rather than a missing component

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

Code:
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\slc.dll
ICACLS C:\WIndows\System32\sppc.dll
ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-security-spp-client_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_f291e361c550b891

.

Here are some instructions to make life easier

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs,Accessories ? then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight ? select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at topleft ? select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Mmk, So recently I've been recieving these messages telling me that I may be a victim of piracy and that I did not pass the Windows genuine version test. This meaning that I may have a pirated copy of windows. However I know for a fact this isn't true.

I was just wondering if there might be some settings on, or there might be some trouble shooting I might have to do to get it to work. Basically whatever someone might think is a plausible reason as to why I didnt pass the "Windows Genuine Inspection" test.

Thank you in advance!

People have said that I have cracked windows which I know is not true because I bought my PC from dell. Dell support said that if I wanted their help I would have to pay $140... Any help would be nice, thanks.

Hi there,

Reboot your computer and boot into "safe mode". Then scan your computer for any viruses/spyware and see if your anti-virus programs picks up any infection. Please provide an update when you can, thank you.

I recently installed windows 7 on my laptop and I'm now getting little messages that say "windows 7, this copy of windows 7 is not genuine" and it changes my desktop from what I have it set to to just black. Other than that I haven't yet discovered any problems with this copy of windows but the fact that it keeps changing my desktop is seriously pissing me off.

but when i go to my task manager there is no "WgaTray.exe" there.

This copy of windows probably isn't genuine and I really don't friggin care weather it is or not I just want it to leave my desktop alone.

Recently i installed a new update that made me take a test to see if my copy of windows was genuine or not, and i didn't pass the test, having this message come up:

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation.

The product key found on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked.

Now, i know exactly what a VLK key is, i know how they work. I had my computer built for me from a friend of a friend of the family back in 2006 (very shortly after Vista came out), he knows what he's doing as he does technical work for a number of companies.

From the day i had the computer built in 2006 up until yesterday, my computer was perfectly fine and windows recognized it as the genuine copy of XP that it is. When i searched for a resolution to this problem on the Microsoft website all they said was this:

The Windows product key installed on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked. A VLK is typically licensed to organizations that want to use multiple copies of Windows. However, if a VLK is reported as stolen or leaked, it is blocked from passing validation and is not considered genuine.
You or your organization may be a victim of software counterfeiting if:
You received a computer with a VLK, but you do not have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft, or
Your organization purchased a VLK from a 3rd party but does not have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft.

I had to replace the hard drive on the comp I/we fixed for my buddy. He bought it new but doesn't have an XP disk. I loaded a copy of XP Media Center and was going to input the key code from the COA on the side cover of his machine. WELL...the CD I borrowed from a friend was a "9 in 1" and when I loaded Media Center it flew right by the key entry portion of the installation! So I figure I would do the right thing and run updates, this checks Windows Genuine and of course it failed. I expected this. So I downloaded the Key Update Tool_enu.exe and "woe is me" I doesn't support Media Center apparently!!! So now, there are warning boxes saying you may be the victim of counterfit software popping up on start-up and in the task bar there is the Windows Genuine logo. I wanted to do this right and figured I could input his number after the install! Anyone know if there is a way to put in the key code after the fact or a way to get Microsoft to validate this copy?
It's a good thing I don't get tired of learning...cuz there is soooooomuch more to learn and sooooo little time left! I could NEVER learn it all! I started way too late! LOL!

Thanks,
Andy

This is a somewhat sticky thread. As it is clearly obvious that you used an illegal copy of XP in order to install and we can't be of any assistance to criminals, you are nevertheless trying to make it legal. So I'll offer some advice before closing this thread.

Here are some references in how to put in the product key. But the chances are that the version of XP that was on that machine was an OEM version with a product key that was part of a series licensed to the manufacturer. If that is the case, then only versions of XP from that manufacturer will accept the key on the machine. You will need to buy recovery CD's from the machine's maker.

Hello,

I have had some problems with my computer lately. Currently my desktop background is showing up as a black screen and in the lower right-hand corner there is this message:

"Windows 7
Build 7600
This copy of Windows is not genuine"

I got this computer (new) when I enrolled at my University and all the software installed is genuine, so I don't know why I am getting this message.

Please help, I don't know what to do

A:Windows 7 not genuine?

Hello,

Please see the very useful information contained here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/genuine/faq

Basically what I would do is contact microsoft, and tell them your situation, they may be able to activate your computer for you and get you on your way. If not then I would contact the university and ask them.

See this link on how to activate over the phone, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/activate-windows-7-on-this-computer Scroll down the the section that says activate over the phone.

it then re-started and now says i have to re install Vista (Vista was already pre-installed, hence no OS disc) as it is now not genuine and when i click to register it again it comes up with a different "error" message"
I decided to Un-install the service pack I dont think it un-installed properly as when doing so it now runs very slow and my desktop is now black and i just see the icons.

A:Windows 7 Not Genuine?

The installed Product Key is the infamous Lenovo Stolen Key - and cannot be valid on any computer.
You have a DELL computer, apparently manufactured in 2009 just as Windows 7 was released.
For what version and edition of Windows is the computer licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment)??

Okay, here's the rub. I bought an original disk of Windows 7 Home Premium. The reason why I bought the disk is to repair a blue error screen which is already solved. Now, I've been on to several times of reformat, then format again my PC. All those times I still don't have problems activating the product key which is found on the back part of the CD case. Then one time when I tried to type the product key, the computer says that It's not valid or something because it is not allowed on my region. Then I re-checked the product key I typed if it was wrong but I was correct in typing the product key. It says on the CD case that its distributed only on the southeast asia region(SEA). I'm in southeast asia so why I get the problem of not activating my windows. This sucks because I spent a lot of money just to buy that one CD for a genuine copy of Windows.

A:Windows is not genuine

Not sure about the region thing, but you may have tripped an anti piracy measure by reinstalling it too often.

You can only install and activate a retail copy so many times before it'll be blocked. After a while it begins to look like you are trying to pirate it.

I don't know the exact numbers but it's like 2 times in 6 months or something along those lines. So for more normal caeses you can reinstall it once every 6 months say and never run into it, but if you've reinstalled 3, 4 or more times in the last month then you'll have to call MS at the number given and explain the situation to get that number working again.

I've been using my laptop for about six months and just now, out of completely no where my windows is not genuine. I seriously don't know what just happened. I will admit, I have pirated Windows Ultimate, but never on this laptop. I don't pirate windows and stuff like that on this laptop. Why in the world, would it out of no where tell me it's not genuine when it is, and has been ever since I bought my laptop?

On this Laptop it's Home Premium and I didn't pirate it. Like I said before, if I would've pirated windows I would've pirated Ultimate, not Home Premium.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

HI:

I bought a new Dell desktop with Windows 7 Pro two weeks ago from the big online seller (Fulfilled by). I could not find the COA Key anywhere on or inside the computer or in any of the boxes it came in. There is a color shifting blue Windows Pro label on the computer.

When I activated it, it never asked for the key, but it did say "Activated". On the computer>properties page it says Activated. All updates have installed with no warnings.

From reading some of the posts here, I'm concerned that I might have a counterfeit Windows. Here's the MGAD:

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if anyone has seen this before. One of my users notified me of a message he was receiving on his laptop. I went to look at it and it read (not exactly but summing it up) that Windows was not genuine. I've seen the message before, obviously, when installing Windows to a computer before putting in the product key. I looked at the Computer properties and it said that Windows is activated. I clicked on "Learn more online..." to the right of "Windows is activated." It took me to a validation tool that is supposed to run and tell you whether Windows is, indeed, genuine, which it said it was. Anybody seen this before? Or know how to fix it? As of now, the only thing I can mark this up as is a virus, which I'm running a virus scan on the computer now. Just hope that it's not a virus. And if it's not, there's an easy way to fix it.

A:Windows not genuine, but it is?

Usually the fastest way to resolve the "windows not activating/genuine, even though I just entered the key" is calling them up and demanding to speak to an agent right off the bat. Usually the automated system is trash. They'll in most cases free up (un-register) the key so you can re-enter it. Here is the support page

Also just for refereance did you download windows from the Microsoft Website, from a CD via retailer, or download from a 3rd party website?

For a while now I have a standing message on my startup screen that says "This copy of windows did not pass genuine Windows validation". It also pops up all the time while I am on the Internet. I've been ignoring it becuz I hv had my computer (built for me) for over 3 years.

I am writing you becuz I think this started after you helped me (so beautifully) with that Koobface virus removal. I left the country before we completely did follow up and when I came back everything was just fine so I didn't return to you.

I am now nervous about it and want to fix it becuz I hv some other issues....(slowness and printer stuff. ) But, this one first.

Thanks in advance for all you do.

Hi,

My Aunt got her PC fixed a while ago and the guy was nice enough to update it to Windows 7 free of charge... which I thought a bit odd at the time. It was fine for ages but its now started coming up with messages saying its a counterfeit copy, and says Build 7601, this is not a genuine copy. We cant get back in hold of him now funnily enough...

So clearly the guy was a rip off, however it does ask for an activation key (which he obviously never gave us), but do any of you guys know a way around this?

I'm fairly ok with computers so you can give me normal instructions to follow if there is a quick download or something.

Okay, so I have this Lenovo laptop that has been with me for just a year. A few months ago, this whole 'not genuine' appeared and I tried solving it with the slmgr -rearm thing. I tried to do it again but this time it told me that I have reached the limit. So of course I tried fixing the registry and changing the value of skip rearm. When I tried it again, it told me that all I need to was restart my computer and I thought it was okay already. Looks like I was wrong. It still says that it's not genuine or something like that. Should I reinstall Windows 7? Or is there another way?

Also, two days ago I found out that my laptop has been slowing down and freezing a lot. I checked the task manager and svchost has been taking up 900k of ram. What the heck?? I tried to stop that process but it says access denied even if I'm the administrator.

Yesterday when I tried to start up computer 2 I receive the message:
This copy of windows is not genuine followed by a build number.
Is there any way I can rectify this without doing a full reinstall.

A:Windows 7 not genuine

Try these one by one:

1) Where it says, "Go online to resolve....", do so, many a times that solves the issue.

2) In installed windows updates (look in left pane of Programs anf Features->View Installed updates), locate kb971033 (thats WAT), uninstall it, if it lets you. Reboot, then go to the microsoft genuine website and let it install WAT and validate.

3) Sudden random non genuineness can also be the result of a permissions issue in a registry key. Follow the steps here.

It doesn't expire, unless you were running a beta version or a pirated version that may have been 'cracked' and then you updated.......when you say it was genuine, you are saying that you have the original halogramed cd and product key?

I'll try to make this quick. I bought my desktop off ebay and everything worked great until I messed up the cloning of the ssd to a larger drive. I then just reinstalled windows off and iso I downloaded since I didn't get a copy of windows with the computer. I entered the product key that magic jellybean key finder gave me and everything was great for a month or so. Then the black screen and not genuine messages. I emailed the guy I got the computer from and he assures me that its a legit copy and to call Microsoft if needed. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me so I thought I run this by here and see what everyone has to say about it. Here is a copy of the report to check out. Let me know if I left something out.

After several years of using my current laptop without any problems, I have suddenly got a message in the bottom right of my screen saying "Windows Vista (TM) BUILD 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine". It has never appeared before and everything comes up normally.
My not be relevant but it is coincident with my Norton licence expiring which I have now renewed.
Is the message genuine?
How do I ensure I am legal and how do I get rid of the message?

Welcome
Go to the computer icon on your desktop (if not there go to search by the start button, type computer and bring it to desktop). Right click on computer and then properties. Do you see the genuine emblem, bottom, right?
If the emblem is not present, type activate windows, in search by the start button. If you are validated, it will indicate that activation was successful.
If both methods give you bad news, try to activate online. If not successful, you will be given a number to call.

My mother-in-law somehow has messed up her windows and constantly gets the not genuine windows message in the lower corner of the screen. She has an HP and windows 7. She also has the product key. Do I tap F8 at boot-up to go into safe mode and reapply windows? I need a step-by-step-how-to-apply course. I think I just follow the questions...right? Help. I don't remember it being so hard to put the key code in for a repair back in the days of win xp, I hope 7 is as easy.

Hello
I got my computer and windows 7 during christmas last year and in the past few weeks ive been dealing with this problem.
I get this pop up that says windows detects a problem that your system may be counterfeit. So i follow the steps it says to install and nothing.
It sits at the screen (for numerous hours) that says this may take a few minutes.
I know as a fact its genuine because my siblings got the same CD to install windows and it works perfect for them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had this copy of w7hp for 2 years now. I bought from a vendor. Now I get an message telling me it is not valid. If I click all the links to try and resolve it I get to a point where I must update to w10. I'm calling this BS. Why did it install and validate fine had they said something at the time of the install I could have done something about it now I can’t even remember where I got it.
