Computer infected after visiting wikipedia during the blackout

Q: Computer infected after visiting wikipedia during the blackout

So today I logged on to wikipedia only to see the sopa blackout message. within two minutes my firewalls detected numerous incoming and outgoing connections. then my desktop froze followed by all commands. I then turned my computer off. waited. then turned it back on. after going to the black xp screen it reboots to the "we apologize for the inconveinice but windows.." last known config-reboots to the we apologize screen. start normal-same thing. safe mode works. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode and it found the following threats:
trojan.winlock
pup.removeWGA
exploit.drop.7

after scan and necessary reboot, my computer gets caught in the restart loop with no way to start windows except choosing safemode or safemode with networking. and the threats keep reappearing. they will not go away!

Readers who are seeing ads on Wikipedia articles are likely to be using a web browser that is infected with malware, the Wikimedia Foundation has warned. The warning points to an apparent resurgence in adware and spyware delivered via cleverly disguised browser extensions designed to run across multiple web browsers and operating systems. Adware and spyware are software programs distributed and installed on people's computer's to track their surfing habits. In the case of keyloggers, a type of spyware, it is used to record sensitive information such as login and passwords.Full article here.

For some reason, I only see a screenshot of a Wikipedia page with an ad on it when I click on that link.

Hi!

Today, while  visiting a website with IE, I suddenly got a new window which contained a message from "NSA+ FBI" ( or smthg like that), telling me that I am at risk of being thrown to jail for the next 5-7 years unless I pay a fine of about 150$ either with my credit card or by buying some sort of prepaid phone cards. It was imposible for me to close the window or to use CTRL+ ALT+DEL so as to close it from Task Manager. So, I shut down the computer from the start menu.

After restarting it, the internet works much slower.

Since then, I ran a quick scan with my Security Essentials (updated right before starting the scan), which lasted for about 70 minutes (!!!) but found nothing . I have also performed a scan using Microsoft's Safety Scanner, which returned the result that there are no unwanted programs on my computer.

But if no unwanted software is on my computer, then how come did I got that screen asking me for money on behalf of CIA/ FBI.. etc... ?????

Thank you

So on occasion my computer just shuts off. I would then try to turn it back on but it would just shut back off in a second. At that time i leave my laptop be for some hours before i even attempt to get back on. it does seem to be heating way too much at times like this. Other times, i could be on my laptop and when i restart my laptop it turns on but stays at a black screen- and does nothing. The fan (or whatever generates the noise) seems to be working slower as well.
My guess is that its the hard drive. Unsure but would like some other expert opinions. Thanks!

A:Computer Blackout.

Well, looks like a graphics related problem.

First, can you chech that any fans on your graphics card are operational and that the card isn't caked in dust Then is there any software you have that shows the graphics card's temperature.

I suspect that the card is overheating.

Left the house yesterday for a few hours and left the computer on. Came back to find that the power had been out for some time (blackout) and now the computer won't turn on. It's plugged into a power bar and everything else including the monitor that is plugged into the power bar is working ok. I'm guessing there was a power surge and now something is fried.

I've tried unplugging and plugging in the computer both at the power socket and the cord at the back of the computer. I tried the little 0/1 switch at the back of the PC but no luck.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks,

Jen

Guys I would appreciate any help that you guys can provide

Basically, one night there was a blackout and my computer would not turn on again. It would for 2 seconds with fans turning on and it will then auto turn off.

I decided to try a new mobo, new cpu, new RAM, new PSU, new HDD (all borrowed) and still nothing.

I have stripped it down to just mobo, cpu, video card and hdd. It would occasionally beep once and stay turned on - all fans spinning lights are on, the HDD LED stays on constantly but my monitor will not activate and run anything. I have tried taking out the CMOS battery, trying to reset things but still no progress.

Please help, I've tried fixing it for over a week now..

LATEST UPDATE:

Ive tested my CPU, PSU, RAM, on yet another mobo ... and it booted up fine ..

when i plugged in my HDD, and using it as master and only hdd, it can detect my hdd, but it will get stuck i think on a partition check?, and wont cant load into windows -_-

any ideas ?

Hi everyone,

About a month ago when I was running one of my routine virus scans and I had a blackout/power outage, and ever since then my computer has been extremely slow with over 3 minute boot times, and 3x slower when running normal programs. The hard disk drive light on the case consistently stays red even if the computer is not being used, and it didn't do this before.

I have tried chkdsk /r (it took 3days!), virus scans, System File Checker but to no avail. Does anyone here have any recommendations (I'm not very good with computer) or could it be something physically wrong with the computer?

Here is my system information: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/cWvw5fcUMT6eEdzIpWrCz4s
And my power supply is the Corsair HX620W

Thanks

Hi all. Ive been battling this issue for a few days now. whenever i visit sites such as myspace or espn.com, when im either searching around on the sites my computer will lock up. i can hear it processing information as if it were getting sent massive amounts of information, yet when i check the sites on another computer in my house i dont have these issues. i tried disabling javascript and it worked for part of the problem, but when i started to search the website further, i encountered the issue again. This occurs with both internet explorer and firefox, and my flashplayer and windows media player are both updated. ive searched my computer with spybot and adaware.

A:Computer locking up when visiting certain sites

Try reseting you security permissions. Goto tool > internet options > security tab. Click on default level, then set it to low hit apply, then move it right back to medium and hit apply. This will put it back to microsoft recommended settings. let us know if that works.

Recently my computer screen will suddenly go black (like there is no signal comming from the computer). I thought that maybe my graphics card was going bad, until I had music on when the screen went black and the music acted like it was a CD that was skipping on a track. Then I noticed that the entire computer was actually freezing. This is happening more and more frequently. Sometimes if I move my mouse around (as if trying to get out of "screen saver mode") the monitor will come back on and the computer will not be in freeze mode. I also started noticing that the internet expolorer is running very slowly (it often seems like it hangs up for a while when trying to find the website that I'm trying to load). I have deleted all the temporary internet history and files, but this is not fixing anything. Please Help.

Thank you for your time, Sincerely,

Reid

Hi all,

First post bc I can't find a good answer to this question anywhere.

I play guitar and as such, I frequently visit www.ultimate-guitar.com. For the past few months, whenever I visit the site, there is a good chance of my computer spontaneously just shutting down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens a good portion of the time that I go to the site, and it only ever happens on that site.

I'm currently running 64-bit Vista Home Premium. This happens on both Chrome and Firefox.

Over the last few days, any time I try to visit youtube my computer completely freezes.  The mouse doesn't move, I can't push ctrl+alt+del, nothing at all works.  The screen just freezes while the page is loading.  The computer doesn't seem to be busy working when it freezes.  It seems to just stop completely.  I do not have this problem with any other websites.  I have scanned for viruses with Spybot and Malwarebytes.  I downloaded Ccleaner and used that too, as I thought it might be some sort of registry error.  No issues have been found.  There are no other sypmtoms of problems with the computer.  It is not running slowly.  Everything seems normal except for youtube.

I am using Firefox 20.0..1  There are no strange add ons or toolbars that I use.  I use Windows 7.  Any ideas what might be causing the problem?

A:Visiting youtube causes computer to freeze completely

I did a little more experimenting, and discovered that the problem only seems to be when using firefox.  Chrome and Internet explorer load the page.  I did, however notice that the Samsung ad at the top of youtube had an error loading.  The problem with Firefox seems to occur at the moment the Samsung ad finishes loading.  Perhaps it is related specifically to that.

(not sure if i put this in the correct section sorry)

Im with BT Broadband at the moment, earlier today there was a new update, im guessing for the router, so i downloaded it.

Since then i have been getting the above warning on certain sites i try to enter which i have been on before with no problems (for instance, the BBC website).

Is this just coincidence or did the update do this?
... and if so, does anyone know how i got about un-installing the update?

Thanks.

Hi guys,

Lately I have been having som problems.
Suddenly my computer could just black out, looks like it is turning itself off, but not completely. The fans is still running, but can't use the computer and the screen is black.

And yesterday I got a BSOD also. Don't know if this Memory Management issue has something to do with my earlier blackouts, but I hope so. So that there is only 1 thing to fix ;-)

Yesterday I ran Memtest86+ for 10 passes and 22 hours. And I got zero errors. See picture.

Hope there is someone that could assist me

A:Random computer blackout and BSOD Memory-management

Hello JohnMa and welcome to Sevenforums.

BSOD Analyse

BIOS Date / 7 ready

How long have you been running Windows 7 on this motherboard? I believe that your hardware barely can support running Windows 7. Your BIOS is from 2008 which could be problematic.

Here are some of my suggestions:
Search your hardware parts on the Windows 7 Compatibility Center, and ensure that Microsoft has approved the product to be 7 ready.(For an automatic check, you can use the Upgrade Advisor)

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

Code:
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 2704, 20.03.2008
Problem Devices

Problem devices can be found in your Device Manager. Search Device Manager in Start, and look for . Note that if the warning sign isn't there, select View on the top of the window, and end with Show hidden devices.

In this case it's your driver for your mouse as far as I'm concerned. Are you able to get the driver installed?

Code:
PS/2 Mouse ACPI\PNP0F03\4&2E2B2FDC&0 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
The device driver usually appears when a gaming mouse, or an Xbox Controller is connected.

Drivers

You have a bunch of 3rd party drivers installed. As you ran Memtest86+, let's proceed to Driver Verifier for some stress testing on those drivers.

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But... Read more

I have an infected laptop running XP Pro SP3. It had Spyware Protect 2009 on it but I was able to stop the sysguard.exe process and delete sysguard.exe from the Windows subdirectory and from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\....\Run registry hive. There is still at least one other major problem. IE 7 is redirected to display "internet explorer warning visiting this web site may harm your computer" most of the time. I can get to google sometimes and even search something but when I try to follow a link - I get the redirection message. It also prevents me from running a system restore and most of the scanning software such as malwarebytes, SDfix and several others. I was able to run HijackThis but when I tried to post the report, it redirected me again so I saved the log file to a thumbdrive and logged onto an uninfected computer to post this.

I'm attaching the log file.

I was able to kill it with RKill, but there are still some lingering issues going on.
When I try to connect to the internet via Google.com I get this message "Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!"
I have run Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.
They have removed numerous Trojans etc, but I still get the Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!
When I tried running HIJackThis, I get a message "For some reason system denied write access to the Hosts file...."

Any clue how bad it really is?

We just started having this problem today at one of our computers at work, we run on Windows XP. Every time I navigate to a new web page (even here), I get a pop up warning:

Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!

Most likely causes:
The website contains exploits that can launch a malicious code on your computer
Suspicious network activity detected
There might be an active spyware running on your computer

What you can try:
Activate Antivirus 360 for secure Internet surfing (Recommended).
Check your computer for viruses and malware.

Maybe you know what to do?

A:Wikipedia users where are you?

Perhaps ask wikipedia themselves and find why it's under deletion? Maybe it's not been updated for some time that needed references or sources etc. What is the wiki page?

Hey, as IE8 is still in a beta i suggest you report this as a bug, then whether it is or not(it could be wiki's coding) will be decided by someone working on the browser and they can work out how to fix it.

IE8 has a newsgroup which is supposed to be used for feedback, i'm sure you'd get more help there: http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=us

Hi,

I got my internet back today after a month of not having a PC. I'm now connected through a British Telecommunications "hub", rather than through a modem as before. However I have encountered an internet problem. When I first connected to the internet today, Wikipedia would load fine but now it is the only website which will not load, I get the standard "Problem loading page, Unable to connect" message. (I'm using Firefox on Windows XP, although it doesn't work on Explorer either.)

Any ideas on how to get Wikipedia to load?

Cheers!

Hi, I'm new to BleepingComputer but have some computer experience. I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP3 with all the recommended updates installed. I'm also running IE8. I'm set up through a wireless connection. My computer was wiped and completely re-installed about 5 months back.My computer seems to be running just fine, smooth and generally fast. IE8 has had no problems with opening any webpage except Wikipedia and any Wikipedia sub-article. When I do, I receive the following in IE8:Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage What you can try: It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet. Retype the address. Go back to the previous page. Most likely causes:?You are not connected to the Internet.?The website is encountering problems.?There might be a typing error in the address.I've run AVG9, Super Anti-Spyware, and MBAM, all of which turn up that I am clean. I looked at a HJT log and it too appeared clean but I'm not quite an expert with interpreting HJT logs, there just weren't any glaring issues in it so I didn't make any changes to it.I've double checked with other computers on my network and they can all open Wikipedia and its sub-articles just fine. Any ideas? Do I have a hidden infection or is it something less sinister?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Only wikipedia won't load

See if it's blocked by your firewall by checking the logs if you have them. If you don't have firewall logs, turn it off and see if you can access the site. Also verify that the site has not been erroneously added to your hosts file.

You mention clearing your browsers cache, did you also clear all cookies as well? You may want to selectively clear them if you have sites you regularly log into.

However, I would like to browse wikipedia while I'm on holiday for some basic research information. Thinking about this I realised it would be convinient for me to be able to access wikipedia without an internet connection. Is it at all possible to download the entire wikipedia database and view it offline? I did a quick google of it and it talks about MySQL servers and the like. Personally I don't want to go to that much trouble, is there a quick way to do this?

The App they got isn't even Wikipedia....it is some sort of new thing and they got away with stealing the Wikipedia name.

A:Wikipedia App is a FAKE

Welcome to the forum, Jeht. I see you're located in Washington. Seattle? I lived near there for a few years. Enumclaw and Tacoma.

Yea, I see what you mean about the app. Kinda' trimmed to the bare essentials like a lot of the apps. And what really gets me is that when one clicks on an article in some apps then the alt/arrow keys doesn't work as in a browser to return. It does in some. A lot of them shortcut keys don't work and I hate the mouse! It's all based on touch, which a lot of PC users are complaining about. Alt/F4 still kills them though! They've got a ways to go with these apps, although it is beta. Gadgets were like that at first. Then there was a million of them.

Again, welcome and enjoy.

I have downloaded 4.37 GB (4,692,736,975 bytes) of data from Webaroo. This is the full Wikipedia.

I have 32 files with names like:-

1145239506931_images.tar.gz or 1145305763764_package.tar.gz.

Plus some smaller e.g 1 or 48KB, files with names like:-

1145239506931_images.tar.gz.torrent or 1145239506931_package.tar.gz.torrent

Winzip extracts 1145305763764_package.tar.gz (606,251KB)into 2 folders:-

Index > _1.cfs, deletable and segments i.e 3 files

Packagestore > browseUI.sml, Webaroo_Store_Header_html, Webaroo_Store_Header_text, Webaroo_Store_html_0, Webaroo_Store_Metainfo_html, Webaroo_Store_Metainfo_text and Webaroo_Store_text_0 i.e 7 files

If I extract a different *_package.tar.gz file I get the same file names but with different file sizes, so storing in the same Index or Packstore folder will only overwrite the 10 files already there!

I cannot find a Webaroo forum which explains how to use these extracted files to create a running version of Wikipedia.

Can anyone please advise how to use these files or point me to a resource that explains?

This started about 5 days ago. After I visit Wikipedia, it sets itself as an alternate search engine along with Chrome (my default) as do many other sites. They don't set themselves as default and are just there in my "other search engines" list.

However, after I get done searching on Wiki and move onto another site like Facebook, message boards, etc. whenever I go to type into a text box, the previous Wikipedia site pops up.

This only happens after visiting Wikipedia and happens regardless of the letter I press. In the above pic, I pressed "q" and Orange is the New Black....my previous wikipedia search....pops up. When I go to click Orange is the New Black, Chrome crashes.

Now, to fix the problem, I just delete Wikipedia from the "other search engines" list. However, I don't want to deal with this EVERY TIME I bring up Wikipedia (which is often).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent this from happening?

Thanks in advance and I'm happy to be here!

I had a virus that would redirect me when I was on Youtube, Wikipedia, Google, etc. Basically, the virus would highjack my browser when I clicked on certain links and send me to their site, or would insert their site as the first returned hits when I did Google or Yahoo searches.

I cleaned off the virus, but some remnant of the virus remains. I am no longer redirected, but when I try to access youtube, wikipedia, and some other sites, I get a "cannot connect" error in my browser.

I have seen several forums discuss this problem, but none have given a solution that works for me. One site said look for usual DLL in the Startup using msconfig, but I don't see any.

Does anyone know of a solution?

When I go to a longer Wikipedia page, it will load all the images right away, except for one. This last image will load very slowly or not at all. It happens on a lot of pages and the one image will not be much different from all the others, in size or format. It's not the final image on the page.

Do you know why this would happen? I clear my cache every time I close the browser. An example page:

My default font in IE 7 is Latin based, the problem appears to be when i browse to wikipedia i dont have problems with other sites though.
I have also run an sfc scan however no errors came up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Approximately one week ago, I noticed that no Wikipedia articles would not load under any circumstances. More suspiciously, yesterday when I tried to search this problem, the Google search links would not load (time out) that were related to this problem. I have tried different web browsers (Internet Explorer, Chrome), anti viral software (Malewarebytes, TDkiller, AVG, combo killer, CCleaner, Rootkit scan, SpybotS&D) and shutting down my firewall. I have also tried starting computer in save mode and running Malwarebytes, and SpybotS&D. After these solutions did not work, I did a windows restore to Sept. 30th with the problem persisting. Although these programs found some malware, I believe that my computer is still infected. Wikipedia will still not load, it times out, and even if I do a Google search for a specific article it continues to time out. Just now, I was just trying to download Hijack This from sourceforge.net (first google link) and it suspiciously timed out. I had to download from a mirror site.

1- In IE-10 :

<LI id=task1-1>This page can't be displayedMake sure that the web address Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is correct.
Look for the page with your search engine.
Refresh the page in a few minutes.

2- In Firefox :

The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I've tried deleting all the cookies, clearing all the cache, resetting in IE-10, deleting all web history- like everything possible. nothing worked.

Kindly help me out..

Hi,

I was browsing wikipedia yesterday when all of a sudden a page came up that said something like.

'This page has been hijacked by Zodiac, i am going to spread my little symbols to everyone on the internet, tomorrow I will take over'

Or something to that effect, I exited the page quickly because I was afraid of getting a virus or something (i revisited the page 5 mins later but it had returned to normal). The page was full of these weird symbols too...Like the size of an alphabetic character but made up of 4 digits in a square formation.

Indeed I've been seeing those funny symbols a bit lately? What are they? Should I be worried? Should I be worried about visiting the hijacked wikipedia page?

Hi there!

First time poster in this site.

I am a Service Desk specialist from our company and I am assisting a user who is having a problem with Internet Explorer surfing into Wikipedia.

The problem started when the user upgraded IE7 to IE8, which he didn't like and later uninstalled. He reinstalled IE7 and since then he's not able to access Wikipedia. Well, he does access the first page but when he does his search, the page just does not load. No error messages at all, it just doesn't load on the screen whereas using another computer on the same network, no issue with the search.

I have tried searching through other sites and no problems occur. I checked JAVA version and it is 6 update 13 (the latest, I believe). We cleared temporary internet files, checked security settings, etc. Still, the page won't load. We suspect it has something to do with JAVA.

Another issue may be relevant to this, but we ahave already resolved it. The Runonce page comes up but the user cannot save the changes he made, so everytime he opens IE7, the page comes up. We come across the error saying that "Your settings have not been saved". We were able to download the registry needed to resolve this issue, but this may very well be connected to the first issue I mentioned above.

Please help as we are out of solutions.

Thanks in advance!

A:Wikipedia Problem with Internet Explorer 7

Hey Bongster

The only thing that I can think of offhand is this possibility.
Was Java on the system when he made the changes from IE7 to IE8 and back?
Maybe the settings for Java are confused and a delete and reinstall of Java could help.
Actually if it was my machine I would think about deleting all of the add ons and reinstalling them. Im thinking that the switching of the IE versions could possibly have changed some settings and be playing a role in this.

Have you tried to go to tool|internet options|advanced and reset in IE7?
That should reset everything in IE.

Hope this helps Pat

Hey folks,

I've been using Vista for a little over a month now and I've encountered a problem just a few minutes ago where, when I am searching stuff on wikipedia.org and I see an image and I click on it to try and get a bigger picture (to maximize the resolution of the image) an error window pops up and says:

"Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Chuck-berry-2007-07-18.jpg

Operation aborted"

And then after this it takes me to the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen automatically and whenever I click the back button it takes me back to the maximized image but the error window just pops up again and when I click "OK" it takes me directly back to the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen. I also want to mention that the higher resolution picture DOES come up, but the problem is that the error window pops up as well so I can't save the image or anything like that if I want to.

It didn't only do it with this image either. I checked a few other wikipedia searches and all of the images that I click on to try and maximize will give me this same exact message. I can see the regular-sized images perfectly fine but for some reason when I try to click on it to get a higher resolution of the image that dang error window pops up. *shrug* Never seen anything like this before... maybe it is a Vista-exclusive problem. I don't know.

I'm a computer novice (when it comes to technical stuff) and the problem is whenever I open wikipedia this gets opened

I have a HP Probook4420s laptop running on windows 7 and I connect the internet through WiFi. So then I checked my main computer (Windows XP) which is connected to the internet through wire (LAN cable? correct me) and I open the same sites and I can see the same image. So then I connect to the internet using my phone (through Wifi) and the same thing.

I use Chrome but I tried opening these sites through IE and firefox but the same thing. So I re-installed Chrome and same thing. I have also cleared the temp internet files and everything but no avail.

I am using the most recent version of Google Chrome, and it does not render the ff. Wikipedia page properly:

H. P. Lovecraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The top of the blue box in the section "Forbidden Knowledge" (under "Themes") overlaps the second line of the texts in the same section. The problem persists in incognito mode, with all extensions disabled, and with a full uninstall (using Ccleaner) and reinstall of Chrome.

The problem doesn't appear in IE 9 or the latest version of Chromium (22.0.1206.0, which I am using).

I would like to know if it is possible to fix this problem. Otherwise, I will stick to Chromium.

I have contacted via Wikipedia but like most organization, who knows if they read it or when. I do not mind Wikipedia having my name and home address on file for purposes of posting. IP addresss for anyone to see? nope.

Any ideas what to do at this point?

A:im having a panic attack over WIKIPEDIA..anyone familiar with posting there?

Hi sharky,

Apparently, you have a static IP address perhaps with either a cable or DSL modem.

I've posted there before, but since my IP address changes every time I login, my ISP is the only one who would know it is my account that used that IP address at the time I posted.

Looking at the posts since then, apparently there is a way to identify yourself by name that does not show the IP address when you do post.

I was only able to see the IP address when I looked at the history tab. Most folks looking at Wikipedia only want to read about topics, not cull IP addresses. Anyone culling IP addresses would have to go out of their way to do so.

Idea: Write them email asking about their policies on publishing IP addresses, and explain your concern. Ask them politely to remove your IP address and replace it with your name (for your post only, i.e. identified by the history tab date/time), and how to automatically do that next time you post.

I need some help--I believe my son 12 year old son is visiting inappropriate website while we are at work. At the end of the night I clean out the temporary internet folder to free up space on the computer and last night I was just scan the folder and found all kinds of porn websites!! So I clean it out and when I logged on this evening the sites he normally visits are there but so where other porn sites.

Tell if Im wrong but is it true that every website you visit is recorded in the temp internet folder? and so popups get space there and when those cookies automatically go there is the computer is just left on which is what he is trying to tell me.

So is there another way to find out a list of websites that have been visited.

I really need to get these questions asked.

Thanks

I'm not quite sure if this only applies to XP; but I'll post it here anyways because my OS's are XP.

Yesterday, I opened up both desktops to clean them. I used a dry microfibre cloth, and finished without any problems. However, when I hooked everything back up, the computer would turn on and the monitor have it's light on, but the actual monitor just stays black.

What could have happened? The light fo the power to the monitor is on; just the display isn't.

On one of the computers, it was the Video card that wasn't connected, so I connected it but now when I turn it on it leads me to the safe mode selection screen, and choosing any of the options (Start normally, last known good config, safe mode) just freezes the computer. I have yet to open the other one because it takes longer, but I'll post my results in a little when I finish inspecting it.

EDIT: It also isn't a monitor problem, I just tried two different monitors with both computers. It's something to do with the actual computer itself I believe.

So, anyone have any idea as to how I could fix this?

A:Blackout

Do you get a single Beep a few seconds after you turn on the computer? A single beep means that the computer POST'ed correctly. No Beep means there is a hardware problem, usually with the motherboard.

Hello,

I'm a complete IT novice and require some assitance!  My work computer which is run through a thinclient box has got a problem that our IT department can't figure out.  Basically the screen will black out for about 3 seconds, sometimes once and hour, othertimes 3 times in the space of 10 minutes.  I've had a new thinclient, a new screen, new cables, even changin the plug into a different power source to no avail!  It's pretty annoying as you can imagine. When it happens a connection symble appears in the top left.

Any ideas at all as to what the problem is?!

Many thanks

A:3 second blackout

Really desperate for an advice or suggestions on this problem please - it's driving me crazy!

Thanks in advance!

Have any of you guys any experience of working on LCD monitors?
I have one that has gone very dark...although you can just make out the graphics. I believe this is because the backlight has gone, which I assume is just a bulb change....or am I being naive?
It seems crazy to change it for a new one if all it takes is a small bulb to get it working again.

A:LCD Blackout

Hey hodsocks, I found a coulple sites, but could you tell us exactly what your make/model is of the LCD?

example of how to fix an LCD backlight... http://home.comcast.net/~stonent/screenfix.htm

But things may be totally different for your LCD, so give us the make/model and I'll see if I can find exact instructions for you...
