Start Up Page Changed. Computer Is Slower. What Did I Do??

Q: Start Up Page Changed. Computer Is Slower. What Did I Do??

Hi,
Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing and able to guide me through a possible virus. As the title states, my computer has begun acting strangely and I fear it is infected.
Normally, my start up page is Google, when I use my Chrome browser, however, after searching and downloading a movie, things began to get weird. My computer is acting generally slow, and suddenly my start up browser has changed to Yahoo. I fear these are signs of a virus and I would like to take care of this situation before things get worse.
I am fairly inexperienced with virus removal, and I am not sure how to best approach such a vague situation. I ran a Trend Micro Titanium    internet Security, but no threats appeared. I would like to go for a general thorough examination of my computer.
I am using a Windows 8 Operating system.
Thank you again.

A: Start Up Page Changed. Computer Is Slower. What Did I Do??

You may have installed the Yahoo Toolbar without knowing it or accidentially changed your startup page without realizing it.Many toolbars, Add-ons, screensavers, and weather monitoring programs come bundled with other software (often without the knowledge of the user) and can be the source of various issues and problems to include Adware/browser hijacking. Even if advised of a toolbar or Add-on, many folks do not know that it is optional and NOT necessary to install in order to operate the program. Toolbars and Add-ons can usually be removed via Add/Remove Programs or the Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7/8, so always check there first. If the program is not listed in Add/Remove or Programs and Features, the next place to check is your browser Add-ons.- How to Disable Addons, Extensions or Plugins in Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer- How to Disable Add-ons/Extensions in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google ChromeTo set or reset Google Chrome's Home Page, please refer to How to set the home page in Google ChromeTo restore the default settings in Google Chrome, please refer to: Reset Default Page Settings in Google Chrome

If you boot off a usb or cd/dvd when cold does it start quickly without the whine? I'm thinking it may be HD issue if it's a spinner.

Have good read of these two post; as they deal with all - and likely how it happened too...http://www.computing.net/answers/se...http://www.computing.net/answers/se...cwshredder used to be first port of call as it were to resolve it; and it may still work...?Regardless - suggest you run the cleaner utils as posted in the above; and likely you will find you have more than other pests of which you are completely unaware...And then afterwards - pay heed in future to what you download/install; the "helpful offer to install it automatically for you - which from now on you will decline (and instead do a customised install)?

I have the following problem: Two days ago while browsing a pop-up window caused my Internet Explorer to freeze. Since I was almost done browsing I chose to shut down the PC altogether and only a few hours later realized I had caught some kind of spyware or virus:
Whenever I boot IE is opened automatically.
The startpage was changed to some kind of websearch with different entries already given (and named "about: blank".
Whenever I changed that into my standard it was changed back as soon as I closed the IE and at every reboot. Also at one point when I was online something should have been downloaded, but I just canceled that request, not having a closer look at what that may have been.

Since then I took the following actions:
manually looked for files that had been added to my system at the time of that frozen IE. I found some and moved them to a different folder.
They were: javaqh32.exe, oirqw.txt, netis.dll, d3ue32.exe in the C:\WinNT folder, mswb32.dll, yqarj.dll, wmaa.dll, sdkud.exe, sysnk.exe, syspj32.exe in the C:\WinNT\System32 Folder. Since I manually moved them I thought I?d better mention them in case your hijackthis will overlook them.
I remember that javaqh32 was in the loaded processes, as well as d3ue32 and I managed to get them out of there and to different folders by starting my system under DOS and move them then.
After that I also updated my Adaware (was 6.0, but I also downloaded your named SE 1.06 version today), updated it and run i... Read more

A:automatic IE start and startup page changed

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Right click on this link http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DelO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.

I have accidentally changed the Icon for the Picture Viewer on the Start Metro Screen.

I opened a Scan image and by default it used the Picture Program that was bundled on the Start Screen.

Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?

Thanks,

Rory

ok so here is the problem.
on 09/09/15 (I think) I started getting an issue where my computer is running at normal speed for just under 10 minutes after it has finished booting, but is then very, very slow and sluggish for 20 minutes following (Struggles to open folders in less than 30 seconds, will take a few minutes to open firefox and wont open programs like steam and skype) that and is fine once the 20 minutes is up (it will run Third Age: Total war and World of Tanks without any issues). prior to this problem, my computer had stopped lagging within 4 minutes. Please help!
Note: Using 64x Windows 7 Ultimate.

What I remembered that I've tried:
defragmenting my hard drives
disconnecting my second hard drive
Disabling programs on start up (both services and applications).

A:Computer suddenly slower than normal after start up

Take care of what you disable in startup and services.
Let's try something strange, right after computer's powered, right after you enter password [if you have passworded your account] -- leave it alone for a few minutes, let all the security programs' auto-updates do their things, let the various icons throughout the taskbar fully appear, after computer appears to be "at rest," try opening your normal stuff, one by one, open your usual number of goodies.  Let me know if this results in a little smoother operations.  [Reason for suggesting this:  trying to determine if any background operations, without any user active input, are clashing one with another, or, not working as such should.]

Hi, my laptop has random BSOD's and it seems to be getting worse. The start-up time also seems to have suffered in some way. I generally run the system with only the few essential apps running. I haven't changed any hardware components in a long time too nor done any driver updates as far back as I can remember. Any help will be greatly appreciate. I have tons of mini dumps available and just recently enabled full dump collection too so I will be able to share that next time a BSOD occurs.

Please let me know if you need any more information, appreciate your time!

Thanks,
SD

A:Random BSOD slower computer start up time too

Hi SD1645.

It might be a multi-fold issue, and let us attempt step by step.

The prima facie issue is the network driver to your Intel? WiFi Link 5300. So download and install it from Intel? PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows.

Also.... do some hardware tests:

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.
If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

Stress test the CPU.

A few months ago i sold my old gateway computer to my aunt and cousin.

Anyways i loaded what i though was enough security and told them not to do anything dumb sat them down showed them how to use the anti-virus software, adaware, spybot blah blah..

I get a call about a week ago from my aunt saying she can't log onto her computer. i ask why? she tells me as soon as she turns it on it asks her for a password (this is before windows or anything loads up, right after the gateway symbol comes up and the press F10 for blah blah which you can't do anyways)
She must have downloaded a virus that tracked her keystrokes or something cause then she told me for about a month she was having problems with all of her passwords being changed and all this stuff i told her she definitely screwed herself over by not telling me the before it got to bad.

I tried to wipe out XP and reinstall but it will not let me boot from an XP CD or floppy disk... no matter what i try to do that stupid password login thing comes up and after two try of typing stuff in a weird smiley face pops up and then you have to restart.

Is there any hope for this computer? what steps or tools do i need to revive this PC if any or is it just a total loss and should i just tell them to throw it away and look for a new one for them

Hi all, and thank you for having me on the forum.  Windows 8.1

Over a week ago, i noticed a much slower boot time, and the desktop icons and task bar began to disappear for a second while loading up. Whenever i attempted to open the game 'Rift', nothing happened. Same goes for when i tried opening it through Steam.

I downloaded a different launcher for Rift from the developer which worked several times until it stopped loading up too. I decided to revert to a disk image on my backup drive, but i couldn't open Seagate Dashboard either. I would get a message that said something like "An unknown error has occurred. Please restart dashboard and try again." I got a different error message one time which mentioned something about "file association." I forget, I'm sorry.
Next, i tried to reinstall Seagate Dashboard using my backup drive via USB. Halfway through installing it said it could no longer continue because of "COM_Surrogate." I tried installing it again and the whole time i kept hearing the sound for connecting and disconnecting USB. Every time i attempt to open a program i notice 2-3 instances of COM_Surrogate in task manager for a few seconds and then they disappear. Also Skype now launches extremely slow.

I updated and ran Norton Internet Security, followed by Norton Power Eraser, which both came up with nothing. I then downloaded, and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, followed by a second scan including rootkits; nothing. Windows was ful... Read more

Based on a recommendation, I checked my BIOS and I am running the most current (A08). Again, all help is deeply appreciated. Thanks!

I am not sure yet but i think sleep/hibernation is the culprit. I think Windows becomes slower and slower after several sleeps/hibernations. CPU gets more spikes and hard disk is frequently active and slow (when i do something simple, like opening folder, resuming music playing after long time, resuming YouTuben videos playing after long time and especially when MSE antivirus updates itself the hard drive slows down for 3 minutes until MSE is finished). But if i restart computer everything goes back to normal.

Here are my system specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
1GB RAM
80GB Hitachi SATA 150
GeForce Go 2400
Windows XP Home 32-bit

Hi,My laptop has been steadily getting slower and slower, freezing if more than a couple of windows are open and it crashed today leaving me with a black screen and a mouse. When I rebooted it it needed to be restored to an earlier point because of damaged files.I had tried removing progams, pics and old files. Also, my computer says that I am using CA anti-virus which I have not used in over a year and a half. SuperAnti Spyware also says I am running CA Antivirus and Firewall (as activated). It has been uninstalled from my computer and does not show in my list of progams which can be uninstalled (under Windows Control Panel).Next, when I was running a symantec check (I am a student and use the corporate edition) I saw two files that I can not find when I search my hardrive, but the anti-virus didn't recognize it as a virus. They both had unusual names, appeared to be directly on my C:// drive and one ended in a .pif extension. (Of course it flew by my screen so quick that I would never had seen it if I hadn't been looking at that program at that moment and I am unsure if the other even had an extension.)Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me. I have a small web business and of course I use the laptop far more than my desktop. I have backed all the pertinent files up...but still...Finally, does anyone have a registery cleaner/repairer they recommend, if any at all? Thanks in advance!!-Learning in VirginiaI followed the instructions in the Preparation Gu... Hi

For the last few weeks my computer (Windows XP) has been running slower and slower. It takes 2 minutes to boot up. Programs hang up for no reason. It can be fast at the beginning (well like it was before) but then it starts getting slower and slower.

Sometimes a blue screen shows up and the computer reboots by itself so it could be a hardware error Im guessing.

I have 1 GB of RAM, 2,22 GHz, Geforce 7600.

Help appreciated

Hey guys - I'm running windows XP and my computer has been infected several times over the years. I'm not aware of any recent infections but I do know I have an absurd number of programs running at startup (which literally takes like 5 to 10 mins or more). It can also freeze for brief periods as well.

I'm not even sure where to start to try and restore this computer to a reasonable functioning speed. I'm sure stuff is running that I don't need. I have a lot of old or out dated programs on there. I've tried to use add/remove but I'm sure some stuff still lingers. Any guidance would be appreciated.

hi, when I start my windows xp on my dell xps 400, a screen pops up that says- floppy diskette failure. Strike the f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility if I press f1 and continue, I get a screen that says- we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did nor start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failuremor because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally. It then proceeds to give me the options of starting the computer with safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, or start windows normally. With the first three, I just get a lot of code and it freezes. With the last two, I goes to the start up window, but just stays there and I just have to turn it off. Now, I did just get new Internet installed the same day it happened, would that have anything to do with it?

Hi

Erm , I don't really know how it started , but i think it had gone worse these days so im getting worried .

Problems i'm facing
1- "[title] Personalized settings
Setting up personalized settings for:
C:\Recycler\S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644494937-68"

this appears each time i start up ,

2- my computer lags easily , but not always . sometimes when i afk for sometime and when i come back and i click something it lags and soon theres nothing i can do except pressing the restart button . (i can 'press' the task manager button , but after that it doesn't appear and it gets worse , sometimes it writes that explorar.exe is using very high % of my cpu . )

3- Certain settings Did change like the 'no active audio mixers available' problem , i searched the Internet for this problem and i found the solution using services.msg , i turned it to automatic but after i restart it turns back to the way it is . (Note : the no audio mixers problem seems to appear only after i use the computer for some time , everytime i trstart it turns back normal)
- last time when i press ctrl+alt+del the task manager appears immediately , now , the windows security appears first .

4- Sometimes when i insert my pendrive and after i finish i want to remove it safely , but it says its currently in use or something , i'm pretty sure im not though

Computer takes several minutes to boot.  Once booted, no desktop icons appear.  The Start button or nothing in the start toolbar will initiate any action.  Avira starts scanning and is hard to make it stop.  Computer has to be turned off with On/Off switch.  Can boot in Safe Mode and perform all functions.  Ran MalWarebytes and nothing was detected.  Also scanned with Avira and nothing detected.  Noticed that I couldn't Update Avira due to "access denied".  Computer is basically useless since I can't access any programs.  I also noticed that a got a Touchpad object helper error (see screen shot at end of post) and that my Home Page was set to mywebsearch (see screen shot at end of post).  Below is the DDS.txt log nformation.  The Attach.txt file is also attached.  Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what to make of this, however, I'm a paranoid person so what the heck!

This is something I've ignored because it doesn't really seem to have changed the operation of my computer.

What happens:

First Issue: When I start my computer I will see the windows start screen (where the progress bar shows its status), but sometimes when it does the transition to the login page I get a blank screen (like the video card is not detected) and have to shut down and try again. After which, it starts fine the second time around. However, I kind of think this is a hardware conflict with Windows...don't know really.

Second Issue: Normally after a fresh install of Windows the login screen will show the cursor already in the input box. However, after some time the normal login changes and I have to click on the login area to get the input box to show. My paranoid thoughts are that some kind of rootkit has gotten a hold of my system...again not sure just don't have a lot of time to chase down phantoms...
Thanks for any help and sorry if this is vague.
Steve

A:Login page changed

Neither of these issues sound malware/virus related, at all.

The first could be explained by quite a few things, and we can pursue it further if you like.

The second sounds like a setting that was changed back to default after a fresh install of Windows. You should be able to find the solution in Control Panel > User Accounts. Either that or an update with a Service Pack. Is the PC fully updated?

I'm not sure if this is a Windows situation or something with a program I use called Paint Shop Pro (PSP), but the page has changed that I view when saving a file within PSP. My apologies for posting if it's not windows related, but thought I'd try here first.

When I save a file, the page save dialog box comes up for me to tell it where to save it. It used to be that the page underneath that box would show the files and folders in the right pane, and in the left pane would be the Explore tree showing what's on computer. Now, when I save something in PSP, I only see the files and folders and not the tree.

If I save a Works document, I do see what I'm used to seeing, so that's what made me think it may just be a malfunction of my PSP program.

I have tried to resize the window as it comes up full screen and it will not let me grab any side to resize. The 2 small black arrows show up only on the left-hand side and won't appear on any other side of the page. However, even with that, it just won't budge.

It just started appearing in this format in the past week -- until then, I saw the Explore Tree as well. It's no biggie and I can live with it, but just wondered why it changed and if there was a way to get it back to what I was used to seeing.

Any ideas, plea... Read more

Howdy,When I click on my home page instead of the intended site I am getting a site full of advertisements calling itself by the same name.I Googled the proper site and it shows up. When I click on it the same thing happens. I have had this same site as my home page for 4 years. It is a fishing web site that includes different forums etc; Very similar to Bleeping Computers set up. Now all I get is this. http://www.tidalfish.com/I downloaded Zone Alarm as my firewall just before this started happening.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.Dennis EDIT: I happened to be on another fishing related web site and saw a post from a frequent visitor to the site I am trying to log on to. His post indicated that he was having the same access problems as I am having. Apparently the site itself is having problems and it is not on my end after all. Thanks,DennisModerator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hi there.
When I enter an incorrect address, instead of it querying the default search page (in either IE or firefox), it looks up http://64.28.178.4/index.php and redirects me to a random website, varying from adult entertainment to adult learning.
I have tried using Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, and looking through hijackthis myself, but cannot find anything unusual.
I'll post a HJT log. Hope someone can help.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Download CWShredder

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

Then restart your computer and post another log.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the security patches and critical updates.

Then download Hijack This and post a scan log for the experts to look at.

Please do this. Click here: http://www.sherrylynn.us/HijackThis.exe to download Hijack This. Save it to it’s own folder (not temporary files or the desktop).

Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

I can't seem to figure out the source of the slowdown. Aside, of course, from the fact my hdd is packed (time for an archiving, hehe ) and therefore easily fragmented and not so easily de-fragmented. I have a veritable arsenal against all things evil and coded, and update and run them regularly. Spyware Doctor, Spybot S&D, AdAware, CCleaner, CWSShredder, Blacklight, NOD32 Antivirus, etc. But despite my best efforts (by all means and measures my pc should be sterile with all the cleaning and immunizing I do) it still seems to be getting slower and slower. I'm out of ideas now, I place my pc in your hands. *Grinler collapses onto the floor and with his last bit of strength, thrusts out his arm toward the cloaked figures standing around him. Tightly clenched in his fist is a parchment, his last hope, the manuscript known as HiJackThisLog. As he slips into unconsciousness, he hears the voice of the elder kneeling to take the parchment... Hello all,
Ive noticed my computer getting slower and slower doing normal things, like if I right click it will take about ten seconds to pop up. Opening ff, or chrome will take about 15-30 seconds while normally it takes under 5 seconds. I really stumped on this one normally doing simple things like defragging or ccleaner helps but now that does nothing. Really dont know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer getting slower and slower

Hello John

Here are some things to try

Keep your backups up-to date. It could be the start of a hard drive problem.

If it is not any better after these suggestions I think you should run the manufacturer`s diagnostics on the hard drive.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If you don't know the make of hard drive Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work with any make.

The 3rd download is for a bootable CD

Hello Antonio Glishko,My name is Cody and I'll be helping you clean up your computer.I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 48 hours). In turn, I ask that you please respond within 72 hours. If you know you will be away longer than that, I just ask for notice ahead of time. Some points for you to keep in mind: Do NOT run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
It's simply easier for me to analyze logs in this format. Provide feedback about your experience as we go.
Every post you make, please describe in detail how the computer is behaving. "The same" is not detailed enough. If you have any questions at any point, feel free to ask.NOTE: When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. To Generously Helpful Techs:

I bought my "top of the line gaming computer" about 1 yr ago, it was lightning quick during browsing (always less than a second from the click of the mouse). It slowed down slightly over the months. HOWEVER, just recently, I had an almost fatal error through some sort of download (?) - I was able to use the Windows XP Syst Recovery DVD to "correct one or more errors" and save it (get it to actually start). Now it works, but very, very, VERY SLOW (at times, 10 to 15 seconds between Internet browsing transitions) - I'm not 100% certain, however, I believe its cause to be some sort of virus? If you can please offer any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I hope that I am posting the right log ...the right way:

There isn't much showing in your log, so we'll try a general cleaning and see what turns up.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Downloads(make sure to save these in a permanent location)
Cleanup!- Install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Ewido Anti-SpywareInstall Ewido Anti-Spyware
Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the top of the main screen click Shield
Click the word active to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

Suddenly I can't hold my desired home page in default. Instead it goes immediately to "blank" or www.protectionways.com and the screen warns me of the vulnerability of my Windows XP system, citing malware, etc. In particular it mentions mozilla/4.0 and W32.Myzor.FKyf. I have no clue what all that means, but I have not downloaded anything from that site which wants me to download some anti-viral software, cleaners, etc. It's a site that gets bad reviews from McAfee, and I can find no documentation on it that it's in anyway connected w/ Microsoft or McAfee or any other reputable outfit I recognize.
I'm assuming I am infected, but don't know what it is or how to recover from it. I'm a novice, folks, so if you can help me, I'd be grateful.

I got a brand new laptop yesterday, spent the entire night transfering all files, installing all apps/updates and unninstalling bloatware (unninstalled McAfee that came with the laptop and installed Bitdefender).

In the middle of all this, I went to open Chrome and suddently I noticed my Google page looked something like this (not a PrtScreen):

And whenever I search something, the results look nothing like they normally look.

Obviously Google doesn't look like this, so obviously I must've got some infection somehow. So I installed Bitdefender and MalwareBytes, and combined they found like 4 or 5 issues that were easily fixed (can't remember the names exactly, but I know one of the infections was a "INetCookie" or something like that in my AppData folder). After that it still shows google like that...

It can't be the USB drives I used to transfer files and apps, because I used Bitdefender on another computer to scan for viruses and found nothing. I also tried clearing cache, history and cookies...nothing. Formatting OS is not an option, this happened while I was preparing everything to make the backup like I wanted it to be...which was probably my biggest mistake, now that I think about it

I'm at a loss here, could somebody please help me?

Thank you for your time.

A:My Google page changed, think I got infected - Please help

Random thoughts:

Did you set Chrome with a desired homepage after installation ? Was Chrome part of the file transfer or a new download of Chrome ?

Run AdwCleaner https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewd.../1-adwcleaner/
Or uninstall Chrome and run a scan. Should be able to save your Chrome data. Then reinstall.

Hi All:
I've seen other posts with similar problems but here's mine. After my computer has been on for an hour or so Browser Hijack Blaster (BHB) informs me that my home page on Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (IE) has had an attempt to change it to blank. I tell BHB not to allow it and then IE won't start again when I click on it's desktop icon. When I turn off the computer and restart everything is O.K. with my old homepage and then the process starts again. I did have a cool search problem but CWShredder seemed to take care of it. AVG says no viruses, Ad-aware and Spybot find nothing as well. Here's my Hijack This log. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All right, Internet options, privacy, advanced. The “Prompt” was checked off on “Third-Party Cookies” I changed it to Block. I was getting a lot of prompts to allow cookies. I just assumed it was for the page I was on. The last one was from some site I never herd of before and I hit block.

Hello I'm trying to find out how to remove this spyware.

IE 9 seems to be stuck on About:Blank for my home page and I can't change it.

I'm thinking I've been infected which seems odd because I an A/V and Malwarebytes pro.

Some how it got in...

A:[SOLVED] IE9 home page can't be changed.

Should I just wipe out my hard drive. I wish I could just remove it but this gmer scanner will not work correctly.

I ran a combofix log though.

It shows the spyware I think.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

Hello,

It appears that I am being hijacked similarly to other posts I have read in this forum and would like help analyzing my "Hijackthis.log". I am running Windows 2000 with SP4. I am using Internet Explorer v5.51 SP2 (5.51.4807.2300)

My homepage is being changed to "res://wridl.dll/index.html#37049" and my searchURL is changed to something similar. I am also getting a lot of popups. I have searched the windows registry for "wridl" and removed these entries but as soon as I open IE my homepage is changed again. I have run SpyBot and it is not finding anything significant (just a couple cookies) I previously had the CoolWebSearch hijacker about a week prior to this variant and CWShredder took care of it.

I am posting my Hijackthis.log below in hopes that someone can help me this problem. Thank you for your help.

A:IE home page & search URL is being changed

You need to go into your registry and into the hkcu\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main,serarch page and change the entry into which ever search page you wanna use....
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
is the default search string
and on the start page you should just change to what you want your start page to be, like either http://www.msn.com or whichever you decided
then look down a couple folders into the search url and change that setting to
http://home.microsoft.com/access/autosearch.asp?p=%s

in HKLM\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main, default_page_URL should be
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome
which is the default string
and the default_search_URL should be
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
a couple settings down on the list you should see the search page again and it should be
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
and the start page is whatever you want it to be again
just basically go thru it all and find software\microsoft\internet explorer and look for all the start and search settings and change them to the default settings, then look in your add/remove programs and see if you have anything installed that you don't know about and take it off
this too is the default string

Bugs started crawling across my screen and spyware warnings started popping up about "adware.w32.spyshredder". Whatever it is changed the wallpaper on my desktop. It changed my homepage to "softwarereferral.com" and took away access to the Task Manager saying "Access to the Task manager has been disabled by your administrator" I am the administrator on this computer and I don't even know how to disable access to the Task Manager.

What should I do?

I see many other questions about this topic, and while the URL used is different in each case, the effect is the same. In my case, the URL used is "http://www.searchqu.com/406" . When I start up Firefox this is the start-up page used. The home page button shows this and when I go into Tools/Options, the home page is this. If I put in a different address for the home page, if I set the current tab to the address I want and choose "Use Current Page" or if I choose "Use Bookmark" and select the address I want, when I stop Firefox and then restart it, the home page is back to http://www.searchqu.com/406. I can go to "Most Visited" and choose the address I want but there is a problem I can't solve. Any ideas?

A:Home page in Firefox cannot be changed

Run the following and post the logs:

Download OTL from any of the following links and save to your Desktop:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4

Double click on the icon to run it, Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select Run as Administartor. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
In the lower right corner, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

Code:

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
eventvwr.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
CREATERESTOREPOINT

Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them in your reply

Hi all,
My computer is about 1-1/2 years old, 8megs RAM, 64 bit running Win7.
It was fast ... lately not at all. Takes twice as long to start up, and maybe three times longer to load FF. I think it all started the same time I noticed that all my FF searches were "hijacked" to a yahoo page despite all my config settings point to google. Every search from the address bar ended up at yahoo. My gut feeling is that some adware or spyware took some control, and is loading every time I start up.

I was able to fix the address bar search, but only by completely removing FF and reinstalling.

Hopefully you can help restore the lost speed. Thank you all
Mike

I clicked on a link when searching for an item in a search list for my son, the web page instantly changed to a security screen stating that the computer was being infected and there were malware and trojens infecting several areas, C drive, my documents etc. a pop up appeared indicating that to clear them click on the protect button which then showed a dialogue button for run or save, I selected save (although for the life of me I could not remember where it saved it to). Then I noticed that it was part of the browser I was in as one of the tags, it suddenly clicked that the McAfee had not come up with any warnings and imediately I started the lock down firewall associated with McAfee and did a full scan, nothing was in the results, I also checked the search facility looking for entries that were on the 22nd august 2009, and other than an entry for autocad with a picture of a family in a jpeg and an entry for 2019 nothing that would spring to mind, all were deleted.

The search was for a cake called an ICED FINGER (long current bread like cake with a sugar icing top)

Is this a common way of infecting someone or new, what should I look for, the HJT log showed very little that would be classed as a problem etc and the McAfee has not come up with any warnings yet, your comments would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance
Phil

Greetings to all,
I removed the dreaded google redirect using Comfix and re-installing Firefox. A side-effect is that the Default Code page for the display of fonts in DOS windows has changed, and I can't find where to change it back. Full screen DOS is OK. It is only a problem when displayed in a window. (they use different methods)I have tried editing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage in the value OEMCP and neither the values 850 (windows default) or 437 (old IBM fonts)makes any difference. (system restart after edit) I have also tried using CHCP in AUTOEXEC.NT. I am missing something and I just can't see what it is.

Thanks
MrTester.

I deleted the stuff labeled CLaro in the program removal section of Control Panel. But there must be more. Here are the logs from MBAM.

Hello all,
A few days ago my interenet explorer starting coming up REALLY slow and would try to go to idgsearch.com instead of my normal Yahoo page. I have changed my homepage back to yahoo several times and it keeps getting changed back to that idgsearch page?????
When I see that idgsearch page coming up when I open IE, I immediately hit stop. When I do this I can't do anything with IE for about 45 seconds (as though it locks up). Then It's good to go after that, Until I try to bring up another one, (I am notorious for having several IE windows open at once).
Ok, I just ran the Hijack thing I see on here and this is what I cam up with,,,,Any advice?

Thanks!!

This question is about using "Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}."

I've read many solutions for this online and in MS's help files. None of them are working, and it really has me perplexed because I consider myself an advanced user.

My document is a book:

The first page of my book is a cover page. It shouldn't be counted in page numbering.
Beginning on the second page, my book has a TOC and then 9 chapters.
The TOC and each chapter are set up in their own sections. (I do this because I include the chapter's name - which is the section name - in the footer along with page numbers. It also facilitates creating the TOC)
I want the TOC to be counted as Page 1
All of that works fine for the {PAGE} page number. To accomplish it, I told Word to start counting page numbers from 0, and I suppressed displaying the number on the Cover. Then for subsequent pages I selected "Continue from previous section."
My issue is that I really want to show both the current page and the total number of pages ("Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}") in the footer.

When I try that, {PAGE} displays correctly, but {NUMPAGES} shows one too many. It is obviously counting the cover page.

Evidently what I did in #5 above only affects the count for {PAGE} and not for {NUMPAGES}.

All over the web I find the simple solution of using a formula field for {NUMPAGES} as follows:
=1+{NUMPAGES}

Actually, I think that would do the opposite of what I want. I would probably have to... Read more

A:Solved: Word 2007 Page Numbering: Make {NUMPAGES} start counting from Page 2?

I was just messing with the same issue and found a solution:

{={NUMPAGES}-1}

This may look exactly like something you tried already but here is the difference:

Instead of typing in the curly braces ( { ) manually, you have to hit "Ctrl-F9" to insert a field, then do the same for the braces around "NUMPAGES". You wind up with a field inside a field. That way it interprets the "NUMPAGES" as your document property, returns a number like "42", then the next field takes the equation "= 42 - 1" and returns "41". If you don't use "CTRL-F9" to enter the "NUMPAGES" field, it sees the first curly brace and stops, seeing it as a syntax error.

Hope it works for you! It worked for me!
-cheers
