Advice after remote access from untrusted Technical support (Virus issues too)

Q: Advice after remote access from untrusted Technical support (Virus issues too)

I need advice on how to secure my computers from the people I thought were Dell support. They took online access to my Laptop and netbook a Dell Inspiron mini 1012, runs windows 7 starter. The CPU is an Intel Atom N450 has 1gb of memory, I also have a Dell laptop my daughter gave me a few months ago. The dell is only a few months old.
The Dell M5040  AMD E-450 APU  Graphics Radeon HD 1.65. Memory 3 gb,  64 bit system running Windows 7 premium. I wanted to format the hard drive and reinstall windows 7.  I had trouble getting into the bios or into the boot to set the boot order.

I phoned a number I thought was Dell support, I got through to a very nice Indian chap who said he would sort all my problems out for me, and then said it would only cost £131.00.  The alarm bells were ringing by now but I had let him have remote accessto the Laptop thinking it was Dell (I know). The company is called Techvedic, they said I would have a 12 month “Technical support”. They put a document on Laptop. Only I really do not want them in my computer again.

At the time I said I would have to check my bank as I did not have that sort of money, he was keen that I should clear my problems.  At that my point when just as I was telling the guy I could not afford it (by now I knew this was not legitimate)  my friend walks in.  He hears me talking with chap on phone and promptly offers his credit card.
Long story short we paid the money. I had wanted time to get away from call and check on them.

By this time they had also access to the little netbook. Then says I have to pay £111.00 more to fix both.  I said no, no way, cancel all transactions he promised to do it all for £131.00.  He basically says okay, which I thought meant he will sort it all.  In my head I know it is not possible to fix this lot with some on line tools in a few minutes.

I had viruses and malaware on the laptop my daughter gave me , I had trouble since she gave it to me. Several Trojans and some malaware. It had AVG on it. I changed to an ESET trial, that found plenty of Trojans and other problems. Set could not clean all the virus so after my free time with NOD, I installed Kaspersky. Recently I added Malware Bytes.

I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago to make a start on trying to fix the Dell laptop, and knew there was some work involved in the process. I have not been well so it got put on one side.

The dell laptop (the one my daughter gave me) they do appear to have cleared some of  virus problems.  However system does not feel stable, and when I tried the internet I had the re-direct virus problem on the browser all the pop up rubbish. So now I think I could have all sorts written into the computer they can run just about anything they want. Also still have virus problems.
I realised they had shown me some sort of false report of the system.
I do not know anything about stopping this sort of problem. I know it was stupid to let them do this in the first place. I have heard of people loosing control of their computers, and demands for more money.

I would appreciate any help in sorting this out.

I asked a question in another thread wanting to know if there were any good free alternatives to programs PCAnywhere or GoToMyPC. Boy did I ever get more than I expected in TeamViewer that EAFiedler suggested.

Now I have a technical question about how TeamViewer works. It connects to remote systems across the internet not by an IP number that I enter but rather by an arbitrary nine-digit number assigned to the system when the program is set up. It connects so quickly that I know it cannot be scanning every IP address on the 'net looking for a TeamViewer connection at every one of them. So, I have deduced that there must be a server out there somewhere that stores TeamViewer information.

Does anyone know enough about this to confirm this and/or explain it to me somewhat?

Next question: What about security? Are there any security issues I should be concerned about, other than the obvious, of course?

Hi guys,
I am trying to come up with a system where users can remotely access and save data to an excel spreadsheet. I am torn between the options and I was hoping someone could offer some advice. The ones I was thinking about are Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, and VNC. I have already ruled out ftp access. What I am curious about is which ones are most efficent and secure. At least one of the computers that will have to connect to it will be through dial-up so low bandwidth usuage is very important.
The file in question will be about 100 MB
The server computer is a windows xp pro box
Thanks in advance.

Today, I was at a remote business location that provides wireless networking to its clients/business associates. There were at least 5 others there with me that had laptop computers with wireless adapters. All of us could see the wireless network in our available wireless networks window and it indicated that the network was "Automatic" and the signal strength was strong. The network was unsecured and open, so there should not have been a problem connecting. However, only one of us could actually connect to the wireless network. Every time we tried to connect, it would attempt but never made a successful connection. In order to see if there was something interfering with the connection in the room we were in, I went in the room with the wireless router, but got the same result. I also asked if there was some security or something special we needed to do to connect and was told that it was maintained as unsecured for our use.

Can anyone tell me what the problem could be? I will be going back to that location on occasion and would like to be able to remedy the situation. My guess is that it is some setting on our computers, but I don't know what. By the way, I have Win XP Home (with SP2) and I believe all of the others had a version of XP. Thanks in advance.

this may help. quoted from http://www.howtonetworking.com/wireless.htm

How to fix wireless connection issues

1. Make sure all wireless devices are using the same mode, infrastructure in the most cases.
2. Make sure all wireless devices have the same SSID.
3. Make sure all wireless devices have the same WEP encryption settings if you have enabled them.
4. Make sure you have added the wireless MAC into MAC Address Control if you enable it.
5. Use ipconfig and ping to test the connection. All wireless devices must be in the same IP range.

HI.
I am looking to set up some kind of remote access to my home PC.
I would like to be able to use a shared calender (through Outlook, preferably, but could be some other way), and also be able to access files (mainly .pdfs) to alter, save and view them.
3 separate laptops would require access, from various locations (often using roaming 3G internet).
I would prefer to be able to keep a slide-show running on the home PC while it is being accessed.

If anyone could point me in the direction of something cheap, easy to set up and easy to use, that would be appreciated!

I don't know if this is possible but I'm taking any chances. I have just received a Cisco router from my company MIS team. This is to enable my company to be part of the network in the region.

My qestion is, since I stored all the files in the server (for backup purposes) Can they read the file if the MIS log-on from their end? Coz even though tehy are part of our company but there are certain confidential file that cannot be viewed ie payroll for instant.

Right now I have saved those files with a password. I hope this will help.

Greetings

If the file is stored on an NT machine, then you can use NTFS permissions to restrict access to any and all files on your machine.

You say you have set a password on the file already, how did you do this? Is it a word/excel file that you have used the protection in word/excel?

Cheers

Good day,

RE: Dell Dimension tower 6 yrs +, Vista Home Premium SP2, Avast Free, Windows Firewall

My 81 yr old mother, who I'm proud to say isn't afraid of using computers, mistyped a URL on May 26, 2015 resulting in a pop up message stating that her PC was infected and to call 866 250 6058, which is support.me.

She tried to call me to find out what to do but I wasn't available, so unfortunately, she called the 866 number and followed the instructions from "Angie".

My mother typed H H H ( don't know in which screen ), then clicked OK

She was then instructed to go to the support.me website, and was told to enter code 379855, and click RUN. She clicked RUN again, then OK and restarted her PC, which appeared to run normally without any errors or pop ups. She wasn't asked to pay for the service and therefore didn't provide any credit card info.

My concern is that she may have unknowingly installed remote access software from support.me.

I've told her to not use this PC but to use her laptop from now on.

I've searched online and the following link shows the webpage where the code is entered, which appears to be connected to the logmein remote access tool.

I gave the tech remote access and he said I had a tiny something trojan virus. Well I didn't fall for paying, got off the phone, held power button down and turned computer off. Am able to use it fine now with no more warning but am I safe after giving the remote access? I was on the phone for about 30 mins while he was going around to different areas in my computer telling me what all of the "problems" were.

Hi all
Today I have received a phone call from a Technical Support Service, which claims my Computer system has been flagged up as having some serious errors on my computer. They asked my some questions regarding what I used the internet for and how many devices are used in the house. They then gave me instructions to use RUN command and open eventviewer, under Administrative events they asked me what I could see.. and it was aload of errors and warnings.. they then told me that the internet has downloaded these files on my computer with out me knowing and they can cause problems with the system. ( Fortunate that I have had some issues with my explorer BUT found that it was a recent Windows update that had conflicted a file in explorer so I unistalled it and re-installed explorer..Problem gone ). So she then told me I was going to speak to a technician that wanted me to go to this website Link Removed By Moderator which I did but I then realized they wanted what looked like re-mote access to my computer. And that was when I questioned everything they were trying to do... they said no malware, spyware or anti virus program will detect these files and they needed access to run a scan on my computer but depending on the seriousness of how bad it is a one time fee may be applied so I told the man (NO MATE YOU NOT GETTIN ON HERE) which he then replied that my system health is goin to be affected and if im not interested in the help offered then BYE ...

Lately I have been badgered with high pressure sales tactics from several companies who provide technical support most notably Iyogi and PcWizard. Using the Event Viewer, they found (I embarrassed to say) over 37,000 warnings, errors and informative messages which have accumulated over the past three to four years. Each has told me that I am risking everything on my computer unless this problem is dealt with immediately even though I do a complete backup twice a week. Needless to say, I told each of them I wanted to do some research about their respective companies before making a decision. This was the only way to get them off the phone. I have no idea how they got hold of my telephone number in the first place and each was reluctant to tell me. Actually, I would like to learn how to effectively manage this situation myself. This leads me to two questions. Firstly, would it be worth my while to have a strange company I have never heard of take over control of my computer? Secondly, how and where would I go about learning how to manage this situation myself? The latter of these would be far more preferable to me since it would enable me to provide this service to my clients. I have been working with computers for 27 years and my capacity to learn has not diminished regardless of my advanced age. When the link was disconnected between my computer and PcWizard, they left behind a program called 'Advanced WindowsCare V2'. I believe all they were about to do... Read more

Thank you.
REPLY:
Dear NEC customer,
The 660plus is not supported in Windows XP. NEC is no longer developing drivers for the 660plus as NEC is exiting the printer industry. You may want to email again after XP has been offcially released for a few months. We may discover a work around.
Thank you for contacting NEC.

Please if someone know these drivers I will be pleased....

Thank you.

A:Nec and his Technical Support

Maybe you should have checked all your hardware to see if it was supported by XP. Not everything is and most manufacturers have not written drivers for it yet. Find a generic driver for an NEC printer similar to yours in XP's native drivers and use that. They offered a workaround if they found one so what are you complaining about....do a little research!

We'll soon be retiring and doing a good bit of traveling w/ a recreation vehicle. I'm shopping for a laptop that we can use to search the web, make RV park reservations, handle on-line banking, use GPS software etc. Because I think wireless N (802.11n) technology will useful, I'm considering a Toshiba laptop. We have a 2002 Dell PC which worked great once we resolved one initial sound card problem. In 2002 Dells technical support was provided from India, which was a real pain. It wasn't clear on Dell's web page whether they offer wireless N.

Does Dell offer wireless N technology in their laptops and (if so) how does Dell and Toshiba techical support currently compare relative to nationality of support personnel, amount of time on hold on the phone, resolution of problems, etc.?

If you have other recommendations on brands that also offer wireless N, I would also like these. Thank you.

A:Technical Support Recommendations

one thing to consider, though you want n, most wifi locations will only be b or g Your speed will drop to g. So imo, at this time, stick with g because thats all you will need.

as far as support, its all based on individual experience. some have good and some have bad experiences with both dell and toshiba. personally I just shoot for the best computer I could find for my needs and hopefully never need computer support and so far I have been lucky.

Dell has a problem with some Dell Vostro 200 pc's which involves a black screen just after boot. The advised solution from Dell is to set prefetch to only boot rather than boot and applications. Empty the prefetch folder and in effect not use prefetch as it was designed for Windows XP, Is this a legitimate solution for customers experiencing this problem? I always thought prefetch was supposed to "speed things up". Any suggestions about this? Is Dell just blowing the customers off?

Hi,
I have a Packard Bell C3255 notebook that has had a new HDD. I gone into the tattooing process but have come to a stop at the screen asking for the 'technical support code' I know this resides within the DMI but don't know how to access it.
I have had the usual lack of information and help from the PB website and trawled the net but still stuck.
Does anyone know where I can get this 6 digit code?

Tony

How do you connect to another PC using remote access, I can connect to another computer at my house but I want to connect to my uncle's from Arizona to California. What IP adress do you write down because everyone has the same 192.168.1.1 so if i put that it will connect to another one in my house. Is there some other IP adress that I can use. How can i connect to his PC.

A:Remote access issues.

If you go into your search bar and type in "remote access," you should be able to access the prompt and type in the appropriate fields. There's also this video that you can check out on the MS site, too: http://www.microsoft.com/showcase/en/US/details/1cd3dcbd-45f8-43ec-b4e9-33a479ed74de

Thanks in advance for trying to help, I'm working on a decent size network consisting of 1 business type comcast modem and 4 other routers. I'm trying to configure the network for remote access to a DVR i'm installing. I've wired the DVR directly to the modem to bypass all of the other infrastructure. I've taken and forwarded all of the recommended ports to the DVR as well as multiple alternatives to each port. I've been able to access the dvr on the LAN but not once from the WAN. After the port forwarding didn't work I tried to set up the DVR for DMZ mode while disabling the port forwarding, this was also not effective. I even went so far as to enable both DMZ and port forwarding at the same time.. still to no avail. Any suggestions?

A:Remote access issues

What DVR are we talking about here?

Keep in mind, many of the DVRs do not support routed access to them. Hence why it works on your LAN because everything is on the same layer 2 subnet. I ran into this issue with my DirecTV DVRs. To me it's just lazy programming that the software doesn't support layer 3 routing. My resolution of this problem was to get a SlingBox.

I have a client who is trying to use RDP from her notebook at home to remote into her office computer. I have set up the RDP icon correctly on the notebook with the right login credentials. Her desktop is also setup correctly with no firewalls blocking any ports or anything. One issue I do see is that I am not able to ping her IP address FROM the company's server machine. The server is setup for PPTP and other users have no problem remotely accessing their desktops from home. Am I missing something stupid here??

Another concern I have, is that her assigned IP address by the server and firewall is "192.168.168.30" but yet on her physical machine- her network settings are set to "obtain automatically". Does her machine need the IP manually entered in for this thing to work?

When we try to access her desktop from the notebook it gives this error message: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try your connection again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

All Desktops and Notebooks are using Windows XP Pro, the server is running Server2k3.
Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I fell for the technical support scam and paid the fee and granted them access to my computer and they were downloading a couple of programs, but at the same time I told a friend about it and they told me to turn off completely. The scammers continue to call me. I am scared to turn on my computer and would like to know what to do about this.already called the credit card company to cancel the payment.

A:I fell for the technical support scam

Unsolicited phone calls (aka Tech Support Scamming) from "so-called Support Techs" advising your computer is infected with malware has become an increasing common and prolific scam tactic over the past several years.
In the majority of these cases the scammers use social engineering to trick a victim into spending money for unnecessary technical support or to buy an application which claims to remove malware. In other cases the caller pretends to provide free security checks or direct the download and use of a bogus registry cleaner which purports to find thousands of problems, then offer to fix the computer for a fee. If the victim agrees, the support usually costs hundreds of dollars and often leaves the victim's computer unchanged or intentionally infected with dangerous malware.
Another scam tactic involves tricking their victims into believing that their computer is infected by having them look at a Windows log that shows dozens of harmless or low-level error entries. The scammer instructs their victim to type "eventvwr" in the RUN box to open Windows Event Viewer and points out all the warnings and error messages listed under the various Event Viewer categories. The scammer then attempts to scare their victims into giving them remote access to the computer in order to fix it and remove malware. More nefarious scammers will install a backdoor Trojan or Remote Access Trojan in order to steal passwords and other sensitive personal information which could then be used to ac... Read more

Is there anyone actually providing HP support at the moment?  My laptop stopped working and after hours on the phone, we sent it in for repair.  It came back and worked for 3 hours before it stopped working again.  And now I can't even get technical support on the telephone.  My situation was "escalated" into what appears to be a black box.  Does anyone know if technical support actually exists at HP? /Chris

A:The disappearing technical support team

@CRAB0325

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I've been using ESET Smart Security (with NOD32 antivirus) for a while now and it works fine. 3 days ago, I had to ask a technical question to ESET's support, which I did. 3 days have past and still no answer. I have sent them another email and still nothing. What gives? Is their customer care always that long? I really thought ESET would give excellent service. What can be the reason? McAfee offered direct fast online support which ESET doesn't. Kaspersky also offers it. I think it's a great flaw on ESET's part not to have online support. Did anyone experience the same problem with ESET's technical support?

Thanks

Dear Lenovo, I am writting to complain about your equipment as well as the technical support team you have in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (GBM Dominicana; GBM-DR). I bought a brand new Yoga 2 Pro laptop from a friend that brought it from the U.S. last year, in its box and seals intact, full warranty, for around 900 USD. After having it for 9 months (and roughly 6 of use), and several visits to GBM-DR, this faulty equiment is useless!! Here is the recap: 1. First, a "tag" was making contact with the CPU fan. GBM-DR ordered a new fan and change it. 2. Then, the WIFI connection kept dropping. After checking, GBM-DR decided to replace the wifi card, which took like two months. As you can imagine, I spent whole month using the computer for non-internet purposes. 3. Afterwards, I took it again to GBM-DR because this time the machine did not turned on. I demanded for a new equipment since this one was giving me so much trouble, but the people at GBM-DR told me that ordering a replacement for this machine was not possible. The motherboard was damaged and the repairment would take 2 months. I was left 2 1/2 months without computer, and very unsatisfied. 4. When they returned it, the keyboard lights weren't turning on, so I had to come back. They fixed that right away. 5. Lastly, on last december I brought the computer because the screen started to flicker and black out for no reason. The people at GBM-DR told me that my warranty was over and I ... Read more

A:Complaint about Yoga 2 Pro, & Technical Support in...

The same thing happened to me. I haven't even used the computer for the last 3 months because "support" just kept saying they couldn't help me because it was a software problem - and there was NOTHING on my computer but what it came with. Still under warranty and I'm out of the USA, I too feel cheated. I told the service to look up the problem on this site because it's not only me. She said, it's only me. Nice! I can send this back to America. It's taken about 30 hours of trying to fix it myself, now I just avoid it. I know this is a problem with the configuration of LENOVO and Windows 10 because the same things happened when I updated my Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 from Windows 8 to 10. I'm overwhelmed and unsatisfied to say the least.

I am just relating my experiences thus far with Kaspersky technical support.

To be perfectly honest, it has been nothing but an aggravating, frustrating, unacceptable user experience.

I have had an issue with Trusted Application Mode and Application Control. App Control will randomly move an entire block of 40 or 50 apps from the Trusted to Untrusted zone.

I've reported this issue to Kaspersky multiple times. Each time they will request to reset the settings to default - which I do as requested. Then I re-enable TAM and the same issue occurs. Then they will request a run of a system info tool. If the report indicates an "incompatible" software...case closed.

I removed all "incompatible" software - which could be something as irrelevant as a harmless, non-conflicting registry remnant. In fact, Kaspersky has a CleanUp tool that uses an .ini file to detect conflicting registry entries during installation. On my system it never found anything... and installed without a hitch.

I submitted numerous reports - which as far as I can tell were never reviewed... as I was requested multiple times to generate duplicate reports of the same reports I submitted initially with my tech support request!

There is no continuity of support from one support technician to the next. When a new tech takes over the case I have to start all over again.

I'm now reporting this issue for the 8th time trying to get it resolved. And I would bet it will be a conti... Read more

A:Kaspersky Technical Support - Very Poor

I have just read this thread and what you have said sounds appalling. An important feature which should be in every company is good customer support to help the customers with solving issues with the product or to answer any inquiries that they should have to ask.

Kaspersky should start buckling down and improve their customer support if this is the way you have been treated. 8 times you have reported the issue and you still have an unresolved issue? I accept in some cases a issue may not be able to be fixe e.g. due to a configuration on the system (say the user does not wish to fix the configuration).

It sounds like Kaspersky need to address your issue seriously and work on how they are going to fix it. You paid money for the product, right? You then deserve decent customer support, and to have the issue addressed properly and then afterwards fixed through a product update.

How long in have you been using your license? If the product maintains issues and they cannot help you fix it... I guess you could always ask for them to revoke your license and to have your money back (assuming the license is new, as in a month or two). This is usually why I recommend people to use a trial of the product before purchasing it, say on case of bugs on their system others do not experience which are not yet fixed (or in case of bad customer support to get them fixed, like in this case which you have described in the thread). However, I doubt they would be willing to revoke your license an... Read more

My elderly father almost fell victim to a scam involving third-party technical support.  He stubbled upon a phone number on the internet when he was attempting to locate HP technical support regarding a printer question.  I performed research on the phone number he called and discovered the company is tech4global. Tech4global advertises technical support services... for HP and many other well know products.  BEWARE of tech4global!

My father needed help replacing the printer toner cartridge and the tech4global representative convinced him to allow unfettered remoted access into his computer.  The tech4global representative poked around in his system and then informed my father that he was hacked and if he paid $90+ they could remedy the problem.  My father contacted me and I told him to immediately disconnect his internet connection.  I saw that the tech4global representative accessed the windows logs and was snooping in the local user folders.  I am not sure what else the tech4global rep did (like install any backdoors?)... but he definitely tried to take advantage of my father.  It also appeared that he typed a message giving the impression that the system was hacked.  Bogus!

I need to further investigate what this tech4global representative did on my father's PC.  In the meantime, I wanted to provide a warning to stay away from tech4global.  It disgusts me on how (illegitimate) companys attempt... Read more

I have been going through a LOT of pain and hardship with my desktop lately.

It's been having a plethora of problems which caused various BSOD's. Among the errors were a Page in NonPaged Area, and more recently an IRQL Not Less or Equal Error.

I managed to get the computer running again after running in Safe Mode and fiddling with the services. Remote Access Connection Manager is the one that causes it to Blue Screen with the IRQL error.

I've got my computer running on Selective Start-up with everything but this service, and as a result I have no internet connection. I've tried to start backing up files onto a newly purchased external drive, but my computer still seems to be suffering from a memory problem as well.

How exactly could I go about replacing this problem? Do I need to re-boot the OS?

I'm looking at 2-Gig SD cards. The most taxing use for this card will be to store and play back videos in 320x resolution on a Palm TX. My concern is that these videos be played back with no hesitations so the performance speed-wise is important.

Of course, I am concerned about price, too; the prices I've found range from as low as about $50 to as high as $250--quite a range.

Here are the cards I'm looking at. Does anyone have advice for me and does anyone have any first-hand experience they can relay to me that might help:

PNY at $50

Corsair at $68

Patriot at $78

Edge Tech at $81

Transcend at $85

Usually, I buy only name-brand stuff. I like the compatibility and reliability Crucial has give me over the last five years; but, the prices of these SD cards from NewEgg are very tempting. Crucial wants about double the above prices for the same size card.

A:Need Technical Advice on SD Card

Look here too.

http://www.lexar.com/digfilm/index.html

Your see there are many types of CompactFlash cards.
Professional Cards
Platinum Cards
CompactFlash Cards

The Professional Cards only work for some camers. So check to make sure a higher speed card will work for you.

I know I got me a faster SD card last year for my nikon coolpix and the speed is I think 3 times faster then what was out a year or so before that went I got my camera. Really helps in taking pictures to have a faster card.

I like the lexar or you can get the Ritz carmera cards too but they are still made by lexar.

But as you can see there is more then brand and size but also speed and if your going to do video i would think getting the faster speed card you can get that works on your camera would be best.

If choosing an antivirus/antimalware product, which one would you place more value on:

Good signatures and behaviour component

or

Adequate technical support that aids with malware removal (like SpyHunter's Spyware HelpDesk)

A:What is more valuable to you, signatures and behavior component or technical support?

I would say signatures and behavioral components because by the time you go to tec support it may be too late or too time consuming compared to just running an AV.

Hi
My daughter who is Autistic wants an MP4 for Christmas.

The problem that concerns me, is that she has a tendency to drop things on the floor.

My concern is with the hard disk. I reckon in a day she would have damaged the hard disk.

My question is

What if any MP4 would be suitable for her.

I would really appreciate any help here

Cheers
Les

A:Solved: MP4 technical advice required please

Now most of the Mp4/Mp3 players are flash memory instead of hard disk. Flash memory is more durable so that would be a better choice. You could also get a case for it that would give a little more protection. Sandisk and Creative are both good.

Here are some examples http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...escription=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc= which will give you an idea, although you live in the UK and can't order from Newegg.

A:New some technical advice an answer to a query

If the laptop manufacturer supplies a Windows 8 driver for that card for your model laptop it should work fine. Otherwise, unless you find somebody who has tried you'll have to try it to know. The computer may refuse to boot with the "foreign" device, may boot but the card will not work at all, or maybe it will work with the driver from Intel's site or someplace else.

I am running Microsoft Security Essentials on this Desktop.  I have had no alerts about viruses etc.

Beginning 8/15/13, all Windows applications are extremely slow (Office 2010, Windows Media Player in particular) and freeze up and the error of “not responding” happens regularly. Changing windows in IE and surfing the internet is extremely slow.
8/16/13 I receive a call from “Windows Technical Support” about all of the Window’s errors that have been reported.  He informs me that I have a Trojan virus and tells me how to find the errors in my computer.  I see the errors with his instructions.  He carries on for a long time about how bad they are and that I will be unable to remove them. (And the errors in fact I am unable to delete.)  He wants me to purchase Windows 7 as he informs me that mine is corrupted. He also wants me to purchase anti spyware etc.  I hang up.  I then ran Malwarebytes, Super anti spyware and Microsoft Security Essentials.  The only thing they found was some adware which I removed.  I am still having difficulties with all Windows applications.  I have disconnected this desktop from the internet (hard wired) except to send this message.

Help!

Thanks,
Leigh Ann

Hello,
I ran a search to troubleshoot an LCD monitor but was unsuccessful, so here I am looking for help.
I have a ST1904K1 19" LCD Flat Panel Monitor (Office Depot no brand, maybe Microtek). It will only display for less than a second when first turned on then the display disappears. I tried it on 3 different working computers. Turning the monitor off then on again I can see whatever program is running, but the display stays on for a split second then disappears. Any advice? Is it dead? Is it the back light? power board? a cap?
Thank you

A:19" LCD will only display for a second, technical advice will be appreciated

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

I can`t give you any technical advice, but obviously, there is a major problem with your monitor.

If it`s still under warranty, rma it.

If not then take it to a qualified repair technician.

This may be the wrong forum but I will ask anyways...

Sit rep: (vista 32bit) Installing game, screen froze, turned off PC, gets to MS loading bar, blue screen flickers, startup repair does not work, does not recognize OS (even with disc), did HDD check, HDD is ok, Dell thinks the OS is corrupt . Now I know I can just wipe my computer and reinstall the OS but I really need all my data because a lot of it relates to school and my external HDD is also bust not to mention the 100gb of music.

Dell wants to charge me $120 to do a parallel installation of Vista and then back my data to an external HDD (I feel like just breaking my computer and sending it to Dell... ugh!). My dad's PC guy says this is stupid and wants to charge me "a couple hundred $'s" to get all my data off with a better method. My friend says they are both clowns and I should just buy an IDE to usb cable and get all my data off that way, back it up and then wipe my PC. My dad's PC guy then says that this is not guaranteed and might require "special software" only he has and might not work. (I feel like he just wants my money... which he probably does.)

Who is right? I know there are a lot of undefined variables here that may affect my situation but I am no tech wiz but my friend sounds like he is making the most sense. What do you guys suggest?

Thanks for your support.

OK i just got into the Econo Lodge hotel i got my computer and i started to realize it would keep getting hot. So sometimes it would crash or go into hibernation. But now its worse the computer keeps shutting down like in sleep mode where the screen dims and the wireless button becomes red accept now it shuts off is my harddrive shot or is there a remote accesser or worm in this. Let me note i do download ROMS and emulators but are these the cause. Even when my computer is just 34 or 48 degrees Faranheit it will do shall i call it a "sleep-mode shutdown" is this my BIOS doing a fail-safe worm by someone or is my hard-drive shot or is someone invading my computer and infecting it or remotely hacking and shutting it off with a .BAT i should also tell you i am in Safe Mode with Networking while i post this and my computer is Windows 7 Ultimate bought in 2007 and upgraded to Win7 2009.

Thank you. Ryan

- I will post a log as soon as i get a reply with what to do.

Hello,

I have been experiencing intermittent issues with Google (I use Firefox and run Windows 7). When I try to access gmail I receive an "untrusted connection" warning. Sometimes when I click on a link I found through Google I am redirected to a completely unrelated website. Google also makes me type in one of those CAPTCHA security codes before it will allow me to use its search function. MalwareBytes has not detected anything. I am not sure how serious this is so I thought I would ask before attempting to post logs.

Thank you,

Hello recently whilst playing games on the gaming platform steam My screens flashes from no signal and the game alt tabs during the time the screen is flashing from nothing to my computer my mouse is moving and doing stuff on steam (Trying to tradeaway my items if you knowwhat I mean by that) Each time this happens I have turned off my pc and it stops it. It only happens after about 30 minutes of playing a game after readingthings on the internet I assumed it would be a remote access virus however I have done multiple scans and they have come up with nothing. Fortunately it isn't doing anything else apart from controlling stuff on steam. If anyone could help identify what this is or give help on removing the virus or whatever it is that would be great.

Hi, while I tried to access Help and Support Center, more than 5 Internet Explorer windows poped up and all redirect me to a same forum page. Also, the calendar of my System Restore looks like been blocked by some virus, only today's date is in bold, I could not even change the month. I have System Restore turned on all drivers, and never got the problem to back to previous check point, however, none of them are available now.

Below is my Hijackthis log, I tried scan the virus via Windows Live OneCare, Spybot, ewido anti-spyware 4.0, but the problem still there. My OS is XP home. Please help me to clean the virus.

A:Virus found while access Help and Support Center, please Help

Welcome to TSG

You need to uninstall Ewido because its no longer available and up to date.
Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the... Read more

Hello... I will be brief so that someone may be able to look at this quickly and diagnose the problem, I am begging someone! I am not sure what I have going on here, but I have noticed odd events going on with my laptop computer (both now) and it doesn't seem to go away. I had to sell my previous laptop because I was so sick of the problems. I don't know if this is a malware, spyware, trojan, virus or "remote access" related issue. I want to focus on the Remote Access portion though. Recently, I opened the Command Prompt, ran "netcfg -u MS_SteedHeard" which apparently is a Web Access server that was running as well as MySQL. I don't do anything related to using Web Access or MySQL or IIS at all. Everytime I remove something that has to do with it (ie: netsh interface teredo set mode offline) and removal of the drivers from the Device Manager... My Windows system seems to become unstable. I have a lot of ports that are open and being connected to (ie: 443, 139, 135, etc). I have a strong reason to believe someone that I know in my household is behind this and plays "dumb" with me when approached. Bottom line, I need someone to help me secure this or remove the malware, spyware or trojan off and prevent the same incident from happening in the future IF possible. Also, I noticed my computer is running Microsoft Jet Database. Is this normal? Please help ASAP..DDS (Ver_2011-08-26.01) - NTFSAMD64 Internet Explorer: 8.0.7601.17514Run by ... Read more

Hi folks,

I'm having trouble with a couple of technicalities of late and was wondering whether you would be kind enough to help out...

The first is that my MP4 player isn't recognised when I plug it in any more. I've checked the wire and USB socket are fine and ran through info on the manufacturer's site, but it still won't "Beep-beep" on plugging it in and let me sync new songs to it with Windows Media Player because the device isn't found (bizarrely, it does make a "Beep" sound when I unplug it). Also, for some odd reason, the device has started appearing in a box titled "Safely Remove Hardware" (perhaps this is relevant to situation).

The second issue is even more a problem ? the fact my computer won't play DVDs any more. Players no longer recognise DVD information and a box pops up on WMP (the player I use most often) after a while saying "DVD Playback Graph has not been built yet".

Any advice would be much appreciated.

1. When Small Business Server 2000 is deployed, it automatically sets workstations to use the server as an internet proxy because you would be expected to use the Proxy Server built into SBS 2000. However, in most installations a NAT router is used instead. Unfortunately, SBS2000 will still occasionally set the workstations to use the server as a proxy, preventing access to the internet.

Although this can be manually corrected on each workstation by removing the proxy settings in Internet Explorer, what is the best way to fix this issue permanently?

2. what are the two advantages of using the Google cache: (only 2)

3. How would you boot a computer running the Windows XP operating system that uses NTFS that refuses to boot from the hard drive ?

4. How many functional IP addresses are available on a /28 network ?

Please answer these questions as soon ... thankx in advance.

Hello,

Recently I decided to change my original 256MB RAM to a 512MB RAM, unfortunatly this ending not very successful, so I changed back downto 256MB RAM, unfortunatly after putting back in the original 256MB RAM I got a series of beeps coming from my PC meaning there was an obvious problem with the Memory. Completly forgetting I had handled the RAM incorrectly and resulting in damaging the memory.
After discussing this with a friend of mine he recommended I brought new RAM which I did. I got the correct memory for my PC etc... Arriving today I installed the new 512MB RAM on my PC at home, sadly enough this didnt solve the problem. I am keeping the new memory but it can either be the Graphics Card or the Motherboard, is this true or just a rumour? If anybody could assist me with this problem I would really apriciate it as my patients is growing thin.

Any response would be much apriciated or E-Mail [email protected]

Regards and Best wishes.

Dave Wheeler.

A:Technical Issues with my PC Help please someone.

That sounds like you are not seating the DIMMs properly. They will make a snap noise when they are seated in correctly (as worrying as that might be!).

Either that , or your mobo is damaged. I have seen that before, but generally because the mobo got cracked when the memory was forced in too hard. It does not sound like that in this case. I think you are not seating properly.

My more or less brand new Levono E560 has on going technical issues that are really quite maddening. My son uses it for games and tells me the w s a d keys lock up (I have checked this and can verfiy what he tells me). The smart audio function also freezes intermittently when you plug in headphones.  I'm not sure if this is due to a poor install of Windows 7 or if its driver/hardware related. Given the higher than average price of Lenovo gear I would have expected much better than this.

A:E560 on going technical issues

Sean, Welcome to the forum!   Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your e560 - I assume this is the Lenovo e560 vs the ThinkPad e560?  Lenovo has used similar model naming across product lines, so it will help others in the community to be sure of the model. When you say the keys lock, you mean the keys mechanically get stuck, or they stop responding in games? Assuming the latter, is the lack of response reproducible in other applications?  Not trying to blame the games, just wondering if this is under circumstances of heavy CPU / GPU loading or ?  Do other keys involved in game play lock as well, or only these? Try checking the lenovo support site for later versions of the audio software and see if that might help?  Many recent generations of systems have moved away from using hardware in the headphone jack to physically make the switch and now rely on the software.   This seems to come up on some other models which makes me think it maybe software. Lastly, is this the factory Windows 7 (downgrade) image that it shipped with, or did you do a clean install of Windows from a retail copy?

I've had my laptop for just under a year now, and throughout that year I've managed to mess it up on a level that astonishes me. I'm not sure how I messed it up, but after struggling with it by myself for a few weeks, I've decided to ask the community.

Problem 1: Driver issues

Ever since I accidently deleted my audio driver and had to restore my system to an earlier point, I've been unable to install any new hardware drivers. I recently borrowed a pair of headphones from my friend, but when I plugged them in, the driver wouldn't install and it's status went to "Driver not found. Needs troubleshooting". This also occurs with my Mp3 player. Troubleshooting finds nothing, and it's beginning to annoy me.

Problem 2: Metro apps will not open

After struggling with my pc problems, I decided that updating to windows 8.1 might fix any issues, but when I tried to open the marketplace, I was greeted with an error that prompted me to refresh my PC. Doing some research, I learned that refreshing my pc would delete all of my files, and I refuse to do that because I work using this computer. I've been told to turn on file history and create a backup, but my file history says I have no useable drives.

There are some other issues, but these are the big two. Any ideas?

A:Windows 8 Technical Issues

What was the error number you received when you tried to enter the Windows Store?
Make sure that the updates in Windows Update are installed.

Run sfc /scannow in the elevated command prompt to fix any possible corrupt files. See this tutorial.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

For your information if you do a Refresh, it will not delete your files (Reset will), only the applications would have to be reinstalled. You should always backup your files on a regular basis. This tutorial explains it and how to proceed if you so desire.
