Locked Files with avg scan- pictures documents etc

Q: Locked Files with avg scan- pictures documents etc

Hello,

Please help me figure out something.  My Motheris running vista 32 bit on a HP m7760 machine, Intel core 2 [email protected] 213ghz, 2 gb.

I am visiting and she asked me to look at her computer.  I ran ad aware, spybot, malware bytes, spybot, and avg antivirus and a rootkit f-prot...no problems come up....however, there are so many locked files that come up that a av scan is completed very quickly...so many in fact that I feel there is a problem.....photos documents etc...

Should these file be locked from av scan?  i don't know the next step in which to procede.....

Will you help me?

Thanks

"Object is locked skipped", "Error Opening - (File locked)", "Not tested", "Access Denied", "Some files could not be scanned", "Password Protected" or "Encrypted" notations in an anti-virus/anti-malware scan are not uncommon. Some files and services are locked by the operating system or running programs during use for protection, so scanners cannot access them. Other legitimate files, especially those used by security programs, may be obfuscated, encrypted or password protected in order to conceal itself so they do not allow access as a protective measure. When the scanner finds such an object, it makes a note and then just skips to the next one. That explains why it may show with such notations but no action taken in certain anti-virus or anti-malware log scan reports. These are normal when using many security scanning programs so there is seldom a need for concern.NOD32 FAQ: files with "error opening - (File locked) %5B4%5D" what does this mean?BullGuard: What are skipped files? Hey Folks,

A few days ago I picked up a particularly nasty trojan that began running ads in my desktop background - Just audio, but still annoying. I tried removing it using Malwarebytes and Spybot. Oddly enough, since then, I've had further problems. One is the browser redirects randomly to spam sites but the bigger one is I cannot access my documents (music, video etc...) or certain folders in c:\.

For example, I have a folder on the c:\ drive called work. When I click on work, it comes up as totally empty - no files. When I right click it, however, I find there are 193 files at 3 gb. My document folders have also disappeared. When I go to windows / user I find by right clicking that there are hundreds of files at 40 or so gb but I cannot find any of them by searching or exploring. I have made sure all folders are on general view (ie: not just music / video etc) but this does nothing. I now just want to back up my files and blitz the PC with a full reinstall.

Can anyone help me ? I should also note I removed IE by turning off windows features as the trojan kept attacking IE scripts. Not sure if this matters but I'd be grateful if anyone could help me...

A:Files and documents locked ?

The trouble is, you can remove some malware, but that does not automatically repair the damage it does. If it has changed system files and stuff like that, then your only sensible option is to reinstall Windows.

Also, it can be extremely difficult to find and remove some malware.

If you run a backup, then make sure to check that for malware, as well as all drives and partitions.

Unless there is some reason why you absolutely have to troubleshoot this damaged system, then I would go for a new install.

I have a Lenovo w500 thinkpad running windows vista. All my problems begin when I tried to uninstall an internet filtering program called Optenet. The only problem is it required a password to uninstall that I had long since forgotten, so I tried to get around this by using a program called revo uninstaller. After I did this my internet was really slow and buggy so I tried restarting my computer. The internet completely stopped working after it booted back up. I tried using a system restore but for some reason no restore points could be found. I know that there where system restore points just a few weeks earlier. The built in restore function in in revo uninstaller didnt seem to do anything either. Next I used a program called Free Window Registry Repair thinking that that might be the problem but it only made things worse. I started getting error messages on startup that SSDP discovery was not working and something about TMP not working right ( I unfortunately dont remember the exact message). Also explorer would stop working alot when I started it up and in general my whole computer began running very slow. At this point I used norton antivirus to scan my computer for viruses but that did not turn up anything. Finally I used the restore feature of Free Window Registry Repair and restarted my computer. When it turned back on my background was the default one my computer started with, the only icons were recycling bin, my computer, and revo uninstaller. The windows sidebar, ... Read more

Brand New to this-Just registered tonight 1Dec08. While doing a scan with my newly downloaded AVG8 it showed Many files as "Locked-unable to scan" Most were in "Documents and Settings"--(7), 1 each in "hiberfil"(1) and "pagefile"(1), and 6 in Windows/Sys 32(6). Should they be locked? How do I unlock them. I've tried to locate the files through my folders but can't find the particular files. Although my computer "seems" to be running as usual(****ty and slow sometimes) I'm afraid something(adware??) may be using these files to launch it's business. Seem to get lots of cookies unrelated to my web visits and oftentimes my task mgr shows CPU usage in the upper percentiles even when I'm only looking at one or two fully loaded web pages that have no activity on them. Running Windows XP-SP3 on a Dell 4300. --Watersisland P.S.-found a post/thread from someone with the same problem 10Nov08 that doesn't seem to have ever been answered.--thanks

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you post a HijackThis log as follows:

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

As for the locked folders, some are locked on the system, to prevent accidental deletions.

heres the issue,

Im using a laptop, dual core, amd, 4 gigs memory, 64 bit, win xp pro upgraded from win 7 home premium which was upgraded from vista. ( im on a laptop, so doing a clean install vs a upgrade would do more harm then good to do the proprietary software and drivers and all of that such) ( plus i got the upgrade from my Manufacturer. )

the problem doesnt happen EVERYTIME ( and im going to load up my pc with more pics to try and replicate it) but the issue is this, sometimes when im downloading zips or pictures using utorrent, if i preview them, i eather get this ( http://attachments.techguy.org/attachments...08/img_0150.jpg ) or the BSOD ( APC_INDEX_MISMATCH ) . it also happens when u torrent isnt even on, so that eliminates that, and its with multiple things so its not a bad file or a virus or anything. It also sometimes happens when im browsing through my pictures ,or my document type files.

I dont think its hardware because im a gamer, and i watch a lot of movies streaming and such, and i think if it was a hardware issue it would be more predominant and not JUST when im doing those things( pictures, zips ect). I havent a clue what it is, and i believe i have the most up to date video / sound / wifi drivers. I have tryed resetting the memory, doing a memory test and a hard drive test, all came back clean, and re setting the memory didnt do anything. ive called hp and they cant help me much, i keep hearing your going to have to do a restore and if that dont wor... Ok apparently I had the Huer virus, couldn't get rid of it kept replicated. So I just reformatted the laptop again since I just put a new HD in it and didn't have much on there anyway. Well everything comes out clean ran Malwarebytes, AVG, and spybot. I also ran Kerpsky (bad speller sorry) online scan nothing came up. I'm still thinking something is up. When i run AVG in safe mode it can't scan some folders. Its say folders lock. Some of these are network files so I'm thinking maybe thats why my internet is freaking slow (1mb/sec) it used to be 2.5mb/sec. We did just switch from dsl to cable and we are having some problems with the cable. I'm hoping its just the service provider and not my computers. My other concern is my external HD. I do believe its infected. I'm scared to plug it into the laptop and infect it again. I do believe the HD is infected with the recycler virus or what ever it is. Is there a way to disinfect my external HD so that it could be useful again? Its 1tb and has all sorts of pics of the family along with vids and music. I do plan on buying another external to just store family pics on and a seperate for my media files movies and music. I'm sure there is more I just don't remeber. I'm getting tired of searching through pages and pages of stuff. My desktop is in worse shape but I'm just going to buy another HD since the one thats in it is old and slow anyway. Hi everyone!

I have done something stupid and I have no idea how to reverse it.
I have locked myself out of My Documents on Win XP by having an attempt at renaming My Documents - (which I found out is harder than it looks) from Jane & Peters Documents to something less close to home.
I entered Windows in Safe Mode by pressing F8 I think, then I attempted to alter what permissions the Jane and Peters Docs had, then I think I fiddled with the Admins setting, then I got a message that I was about to lock every user out of My Docs....but...I was a tad stupid and did it anyway.
I can't remember what I did or deleted as I was just mucking around without really knowing what I was doing...doh!
There are HEAPS of valuable work related stuff in there as well as the usual cataloge of family pics etc so I really want to get back into it.
Oh and I forgot that when I log in as Admin (well that's the only choice I have now...) I still can't see or access My Docs???

The error message is -
C/Documents and Settings/Peter&Jane/My Documents is not accessible
Access is denied

I really hope someone can help...by the way I am not very proficent at this stuff...obviously.

HI

I've recently installed winXP on my new sata hard drive and everything is going swimmingly. Today I added the hard drive from my old computer to copy some files over before formatting it. The drive installed fine and the system booted just as it should. Once I got in to windows I could access the second drive just as I should be able to, all apart from the user profile folder in my documents. By this I mean when you look in the documents and settings folder and you have folders called Administrator, All Users and Application Data, then you have one for each user profile on the system, and it's that user profile folder it won't let me access. When I try and open it it just says access denied.

Please help me get in there as it's full of loads of work and music I need, plus a few pictures of ex girlfriends in their underwear.

cheers.

I have Windows 7. Using Windows Explore, under my C drive, 'Documents and Settings' and '$Recycle.Bin' have lock symbols on top of their icons. Under my name several folders have blue arrows pointing up and to the right on top of the file icons, such as Application Data, Cookies, Local Settings, My Documents and a few other folders. When clicking all these folders except the recycle bin an error message says 'Location is not available, <folder> is not accessible, Access is denied'. I am the only user of the computer. I have always saved my data to my D drive and this data is available. I am not allowed to adjust 'sharing' or 'permissions' on these folders. I was not allowed to run the SysInfo utility. My user account is set to administrator but it doesn't seem to be working that way.

What's going on here?

A:Solved: Word 7 Documents Locked

It could be because you have not activated your Microsoft Office software.

Or because you have an expired trial version of Office (which Word is part of).
Trial versions of Office come pre-installed when the PC is new. It's not built-in to Windows, so you only get a trial version of it.
When the trial period expires, editing or creating new Office documents with it is blocked.
What happens if you start Word and click on Help >> Activate Product?

If you are already activated, a dialog box saying so
will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation Wizard will
start. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog box will prompt
you to enter a valid product key or purchase a key online."

Hello! Let's see if you can help me with this: I reinstalled Vista on a laptop because it was evident that Vista was acting weird. I didn't format the hard drive, I just reinstalled and I know that there is a file called "windows old". I didn't get to see what was inside the file because the computer owner was in a hurry. She is a coworker, friend of mine and now says that the real owner, her son, is now mad at her because his pictures and documents are gone. Can I call her and tell her that those pictures and documents are still inside the laptop? Will I be able to recover them? Please let me know, so I can call her and take the laptop away from her son without wasting my time. Thanks!

Hello;

I've changed the default My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos and My Musics paths to D:\somewhere not in C:\.

Please check the screenshot at bottom, My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos and My Musics have been disappeared at my User folder. Include paths of Libraries were gone too but I included them again.

How can I get them back in User folder?

Hi. I just observed that if you install a software, sometimes they will create a "My Folder" (If you install DivX, you get a My Videos, if you install MS Visio, you get a My Shapes folder.) When you log onto a different user account and browsed all your way to a different user account directory, you'll notice that the My will all be changed into the name of the user account that owns it.
So much a background. My question is does anybody knows how to create a "My" folder manually?

A:My Documents, My Pictures, My Music

Set the folder read only (must be done using the attrib command in a Command Prompt)
Create a desktop.ini file in the folder. Use the one in My Documents as a guide.

The libraries on my windows 7 computer are locked and I'm not sure how to unlock them. I have no problem viewing pictures or listening to music but when I try to upload a photo to my facebook account or to a photo editing site like befunky.com the tab that is supposed to show up with the different libraries to choose from does not pop up. I have tried adjusting the security settings but there is still a lock on all the tabs.

I am baffled. I was used to XP whereby the right pane off the Start button would typically show you 'My Documents', 'My Pictures' and 'My Music', among others. You could click on My Documents and within the Explorer screen that displayed would be folders for both My Pictures and My Music. You could click on either of those folders and you would see the exact same thing as if you had clicked on Music or Pictures from the right pane.

So I'm helping a friend who purchased a new ASUS laptop after his old Gateway laptop totally died. I remove the hard drive from the laptop, hook it up to a USB HD caddy and plug it into his laptop and it shows up as a G: drive.

Now maybe I screwed this up by doing things in the wrong order, but first I went into his picture file on the G: drive and copied it to the Pictures library on C:. Then I did the same thing with Music. Then I remembered that he told me he had some documents that he wanted copied as well so I copied the entire Document file from G: to C:.

Now, on his new laptop, if I click Start\Pictures everything looks fine. Ditto for Start\Music. Bur if I go to Start\Documents I have 2 entries for My Pictures. 2 for My Music and 2 for My Videos. In each case one of the entries has a picture of a lock next to it, and the other has a white box with a blue arrow curving upward. The folder with the locks are dated 2009 with the ones with the blue arrows have todays date. NONE of the 6 folders are accissible.

Hi

Which one of the following will you vote for backup our data?

a) Windows Backup (come with Windows 7)
b) Sync Toy 2.1
c) Manually

I have been doing backup manually to an external hard drive, partly because someone said it was the easiest and safest way. Also, I tried Windows backup but the backup files look very unfamiliar ... I mean it must have been compressed or something but it is not like other folders on our PC and can be looked at by double click etc.

I understand the advantage of backup programs is that they can pick up any file change and only save those on the external drive without you remembering what have been changed. But if I cannot see the backup files easily I will only know whether I can actually restore them when needed. Manual backup is just like 2 computers and I can be sure one of them will work....

Advice please

Hello everyone and I do so appreciate your time.
Right now I am feeling computer confused and I am new at this. here is the problem and I have a windowsxp. I hope you will forgive me if I am asking this question in the wrong place. Please let me know. First I have had a lot of computer problems including a download trojan, byteverify, and tracking cookies, I tried to get help but couldn't find any. So I backed up everything for the first time and reinstalled the windowsxp cd. Today I had a new grandbaby and took some digital pictures. When I got home I put them in my pictures in my documents. I put them in a folder I guess you call it. They were all in that one place. Then I thought I would go ahead and put the rest of my photos from the back up back into my pictures. I made a stupid mistake and downloaded them all into the new grandchilds folder. So I kept clicking on make a new folder and got them all sorted. Well when I came back later to look at them this is what happened. I went to my documents, my pictures and there is the grandbabies folder only, I click on it and get all the other folders. I deleted the babies folder and them couldn't get to the rest of the pictures. So I undeleted it. But there is nothing in it, I thought. How do I just go to my documents, my pictures and everything is there??? I so appreciate your time and patience with my silliness. Thank you. Gladys222

I am having a problem with My Docs & My Pics folders, in each folder none of the icons show there names when I use Thumbnail view. It first happened a few months ago in My Pictures but I got around that by just throwing all the photos in there in a folder, but yesterday it started happening in My Documents which got me a little worried about a more serious problem. Does anyone know how I can fix this or if this could become a major problem?

A:Weird problem with My Documents & My Pictures

You could try going into a folder, go to tools > folder options and then click the view tab and click reset all folders at the top, this will restore the defaults, then you can change the views to thumbnails again............just a long shot.

Hi all,

I've deleted the 'Documents' and 'Pictures' folders which appear under 'Folders' when you click on 'This PC'

I did this because I'm trying to get into the habit of using my OneDrive not my local disk for storage.

The folder icons are still present, however they now have a little syncing icon attached to them, and I can obviously no longer access them. I get the following error message when I click on them or whenever I perform an action that opens a default folder, such as attempting to attach a document to an email.

I can navigate just fine to my OneDrive by clicking the OneDrive icon, it's just these folders under This PC which seem to be affected, though the file path on the error message confuses the heck out of me because it says it's in my OneDrive.

I'd like to ideally just change my settings so that my OneDrive is the default folder that opens for all of these kind of actions (attaching documents to emails, default location to save files etc.)

Secondarily I'd like to restore the folders under This PC (just the folders, there were no files in them) as the syncing icon bugs me a bit.

Any help much appreciated.

A:Deleted Documents and Pictures Folder

Hi Alchemical, welcome to Ten Forums. This is from the tutorial forum. This PC 'Folders' - Add or Remove in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums . Use option 2. It should get your folders back. Also the sync problem looks like you are not signed to onedrive. Go to https:// onedrive.live.com and sign in. That should fix the path not found problem.

This evening I was working on a project that is due tomorrow and I noticed some weird icons at the bottom of my computer, but decided to ignore them and printo out all my work and call it a night. I opened My Libraries and noticed that all of my folders under My Documents are missing, including their subfolders and documents. Everything is gone!! I then clicked on one of those icons to see what it was and it was WindowsRepair. I promptly googled "WindowsRepair" to find out what it was and realized it was a virus so I began looking up ways to rid my computer of it. I opened my computer in Safe Mode with Networking, hoping that the files had returned they hadn't. I then restored my system to 4 days ago, once again hoping the filed had returned, they hadn't. I can only find a few of them when I search for them. I can find most of the subfolders in recent places, but they are all empty. I want to verify that I am running Windows 7.I am desperate at this point as this project is due in less than 9 hours and I can't find a single file that I need. Please Help!Thank you in advance!Jessica

Hello.

I am pretty desperate right now

I reinstalled the Windows by formatting C and then installing the Windows back into C (where it was installed before), and since the beggining of the week I was collecting the documents and pictures from my PC into one folder in ''D :'' partition.

After reinstalling, EVERYTHING from D is still there BUT not the folder with the documents and pictures.

What could have happened?!

Tried:
-Unhiding hidden folders.
-Searching for the files in the search box.
-Using Recuva (recovered like only 40% of the documents, that have been deleted after moving the copies to the new folder in D).

So basically, the folder in D just vanished with everything.

Any solutions?

A:WIN reinstalled on C -> File from D containing documents and pictures

UPDATE:

So basicly I think I have 2 WINDOWSs ony my PC.
Why?

Because when I turn on my PC I get a black screen where I have to choose between:
-WINDOWS 7
and WINDOWS 7.

If I select the first Windows 7 I get to the newly installed windows on C, with everything being there before the installation to be done (in D and E).

5 minutes ago I tried to get into the second Windows 7, and guess what happened?
It got me into MY OLD Windows, from 2 days ago, with the same bad movement of the PC.

The thing is that it looks like that the Windows files were moved from C to D, and that nothing from D is there.
So my documents and pictures.

BUT, if I try to search for that folder containing my docs and pics, I get this error:

What is happening?

Hi good people!

I would like to have my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS customized so that the "Libraries/Documents (pictures/music/video, etc) is on my "D" Drive instead of my "C (boot)" drive.

Is this possible??

If so, can you give me 3rd grade instructions as how to do this in a step-by-step?

I want to be able to use the Windows 7 Live Photo Gallery as my default program to organize the photos as well.

Does Windows Live Photo Gallery function as a vessel to view and manipulate the photos on the C boot-up hard drive, while the actual photos might be saved by default on my D drive?

Please help! Thank you for taking the time to think this thru.

Hi, I really hope someone can help me with this.

I'm having an issue accessing pictures and documents on my pc. It takes forever for the page to load whenever I click on the "my pictures" link and once it finally opens and I am able to access one of the folders, if I try to go back to the main page after viewing the pictures in whatever folder I am in, the screen just freezes. It also doesn't show recently uploaded pictures eventhough I know they are there since I can see them through my Canon zoombrowser program. I am having the same issue when I try to view my documents.

I have run a virus scan but no virus was detected. I just had the hard drive replaced a year ago or so, so I really hope that it's not about to crash again.

My system is windows xp.

Can anyone figure out what could be causing this ? I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.

A:Having a problem accessing documents and pictures

Go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. The Command Prompt window appears (DOS). Now type a Y for Yes to run Check Disk at next bootup then manually reboot the computer. The Check Disk utility will run at next boot up and try and fix any file errors.
You also can download the ISO image for Seatools or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. And boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD.

I just purchased a new desktop computer system. I am using Windows 7.

I'm trying to think how to describe this so that it makes sense.

I am the only person who uses this computer. The staff member who transferred my data from my damaged computer to the new one apparently gave the computer my full first name ... and then gave my "nickname" the Admin role. Now I appear to have two My pictures and my documents in the library. My photos are scattered between the two My Pictures. When I save something to my pictures ... it doesn't end up where I expect it to be. It could be in either My Pictures.

Not sure if that makes any sense at all to you ... I don't want two sets of pictures and two sets of documents. When I save a picture I want it to go to the same place every time .... unless I designate it somewhere else.

I'm just not sure what exactly to do to meld the mess all into one default identity.

Before I start deleting/moving anything I need to understand why my pictujres are going to one area sometimes ... and sometimes the other.

Is this clear as mud so far?

A:Saving pictures and documents - going to two different locations - why

Clear as mud.

No, not actually that bad.

First,here's my recommendation:
Move everything you want over to your admin account.
Empty all of the folders in the other account.
Delete the other account.

When you get that far then let me know.
The easiest way to move, not necessarily the sophisticate way:
Format a usb stick as Fat32.
go to the non-admin account
Move the stuff you want to keep to the fat32 stick.
sign out and sign in to the admin account.
Move the stuff from the fat32 stick to the appropriate folder in your admin account.
Go back and forth like this until all is in that admin account.

Go back to the non-admin account and empty all of your folders here, in other words, delete everything left in the folders.
Empty the Recycle bin.
From the non-admin account, run CCleaner.
From the non-admin account, run CLEANMGR.exe
from the non-admin account, run TFC TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums Oops, I think you can't do much if you aren't running as admin.
from the non-admin account:
Win | type %temp% | enter | cTrl + A to select all | Ctrl + D to delete your selection
Once again empty the recycle bin.

Go back to the admin acccount and delete the non-admin account.

Let me know when you get this far.

Hi!

I have recently installed windows 8.1 preview on my laptop and my desktop. I have all my files and data stored on a western digital my passport ultra external 2 TB hard drive, and I keep only applications and software on smaller SSD drives in my computers. This way I can use any PC I wish to work with my files, as I only need to plug the hard drive to the machine I want to use.

I also have a working synology DS212+ NAS at home for storage purposes.

I would like to setup a backup system, where my computer would automatically make backups from my external WD hard drive to the NAS, when the external hard drive is plugged in. Could you recommend some software to do that? I tried using windows 8 file history, but I wasn't able to configure it to backup files on external hard drive, as a only wanted to backup my documents and libraries.

Thanks!

A:Best software to backup documents and pictures

Hi there
I'd recommend some commercial software like Acronis where it's easy to backup by FOLDERS as well as creating Disk images. You will also need INCREMENTAL backup support to which these programs have and can schedule the jobs to run when you want them to (It will also back up your OS which you should do regularly anyway -- back the OS up as an IMAGE -- don't forget the small system partition too if it exists).

For DATA you only really need to backup everything ONCE every so often - not every day etc - and then take a load of incremental backups (these are backups where you just backup the CHANGES to any data files).

So prepare a worksheet initially -- say use a spread sheet. (A piece of paper - What's that' !! will do too) with a suggestion of a work list something like this.

1) Backup OS +Apps
2) Group DATA folders into categories -- say MUSIC, PHOTOS, OFFICE type DOCUMENTS, GAME DATA, EMAIL, Private Scans (such as copies of bills / tax returns etc etc).
3) Backup (Full) each category ONCE
4) As required - even nightly backup (Incrementally) your categories - this should be incredibly quick and not use much backup space.

5) Once every so often make a NEW Full backup of your data as 3) above. I'd do the full backup at least once a month.

(For restore the latest version of a directory / file you need to start the restore from the last FULL version and then the incrementals).

Obviously frequency of backups etc depends on how much you CHANGE what is essentially ... Read more

My old system crashed and refused to boot past the BIOS. Having a lot of photos and documents on the drive, I pulled the hard drive out, changed the jumper to slave and plugged it into my new system. The old drive showed up on explorer and everything was there but the personal stuff. The old my pictures and my documents folders don't show on the directory tree. The old drive passes all the diagnostic tests. Does it need to run its own copy of Windows to show these files? Any advice to recover the files would be appreciated

A:All my documents and Pictures are hidden...try all means but nothing help.

Try using a Linux Live CD like Xubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit. It will allow you to go into the drive that Windows is on, then go into the Users folder, that the documents should be in.
Some malware will hide stuff like this, some will actually erase it, along with certain clean-up programs, if you are not careful.

I just did a non-destructive restore on my system, and I am trying to retrieve the files from the 'my old disk structure' folder. I downloaded a password protection program called Folder Access. It was causing lots of issues so I decided to uninstall it. But when I did, since I had “My Documents” folder password protected, the whole folder was locked for some reason. Now, the "My documents" folder has a control panel icon on it and displays the control panel when I attempt to open it. The folder properties under the control panel icon still show that the folder size is 20GB and has about 500 folders and 5000 files (which is about right for my documents), but it is just an ordinary "folder" and not a "File folder". Also, the folder has "21ec2020-3aea-1069-a2dd-08002b30309d" next to it (I believe this is the GUID for the control panel). So all my data is still there but somehow is hidden under a second control panel link. The system created another “My Documents” which is pretty much empty. Can someone please help me make this folder accessible to me again or give me any ideas to change registries or find the lost files?
THANKS

A:My Documents folder locked/hidden under Control Panel

Personally, I would try reinstalling the program Folder Access and using the original password used to password protect the My Documents folder to unencrypt the folder.

After that I would uninstall the program.

....this is in all likelihood questioning the bleeding obvious, but when I
right-click on either a Document or Picture File, the Context Menu displays one
line with Shredder as it's function.

In the Snip below, I have highlighted the line and expanded it to show the
Sub-Context Menus as well;

Of course I realise that it is obviously a type of File destroyer, but have no
knowledge of how it does this, let alone of the method followed to complete
the task.

Incidentally, when is it best to use this Context tool, as I'm presuming that
once a File is Shredded it is no longer recoverable?

The Sepoys will welcome any expansion to my knowledge base.....

A:Documents and Pictures Context Menu - Shredder; What does it do? How?

When a file is deleted it is normally placed in the recycle bin, which is a reserved area of your hard drive. The file isn't actually deleted, but it's placeholder is removed so that the file can't be seen.

A file shredder or eraser goes further than plain deletion. It uses mathematical algorithms to overwrite the data and make it unreadable.

As far as I'm I'm aware, the Shredder listed in your context menu must be a third-party utility - I've checked the context menu on my system and I don't have it.

This Windows Seven Forums thread provides links to some free file shredders:

In setting up a new Acer Aspire V I have managed to rename the default Pictures folder Documents and I now have two folders called Documents - see below:

I was trying to move the Documents and Pictures folders to DropBox (because DropBox is encrypted) in order to have all contents synced. I believe the problem may have arisen because Windows 8.1 (I upgraded from installed Windows 8 immediately after buying the PC and before the install of Office 365) may have put the Documents folder in Skydrive folder by default.

To complicate matters Acer also has some form of cloud storage that may be in the mix -the clear.fi folder below? It is worth noting that the two folders below appear in both Documents folders (above) even although one still had the old Pictures icon - see above.

Here is a shot of the folders currently in the relevant user folder:

Is there any way to unscramble this mess and get the folders to DropBox please?

Many thanks.

A:lost documents and pictures after system recovery

Firstly stop using the computer.
Every time it boots up or you access the net, you will be overwriting more.

You would be best to take the PC to a computer repair facility, where they can remove the hard drive and attempt to recover.

Recovering any back to the same drive will immediately overwrite what is left.

A full system recovery will always return your PC to the condition it left the factory, no data will be saved.

I hope someone can help me as I am not the most technical user of a PC. So if a solution is posted please make it easy.

Here is my issue. I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I probably set up stuff wrong at the start.

I set up my wife and 2 daughters as Administrators like me but I thought that they would not be able to see my Documents or Pictures or Music as my Profile has a password. But they were able to see all my Music, Documents and Pictures.

Previously in Windows XP, all our stuff was separate and they didn't see any of my files.

Thinking all I had to do was make them Standard Users and this would rectify the issue but obviously it didn't. I have left them at Standard Users hoping for a solution from you people here on this Forum.

So I am asking is there a way on Windows 8.1 to have my stuff Private for me and for no one to see it?

Thanks

A:Hiding Documents/Music/Pictures from Other PC Users

Just go to your User name folder as shown in the picture, my name is blocked out in Blue' right click a library folder then choose "Share With" then choose "Stop Sharing" for any particular Library folder that you don't want to share.

You need to do this because in Windows 8/8.1 the Users folder is shared by default so that people don't get confused on how to share the Users folders, sharing of the Username folder was not enabled with Windows 7.

Hi,

Would appreciate some help with this problem.

Windows 7 machine. Anti virus and Malwarebytes installed and scanned frequently.

Last week I noticed some desktop icons and folders were missing. Did a virus and MWbytes scan - no virus or malware.
Then I tried to do a system restore but didn't work so undid the restore. Now I notice that most of the folders in My Documents are missing and all of the folders in My Pictures. I rechecked for viruses and malware and found nothing. Checked my recycle bin and searched for the missing files/folders and found nothing except I do see some shortcuts to the missing folders in my Recent Place folder though the targets are missing. Made sure to unhide all files and folders and still cannot find the missing documents or pictures.

Questions:

1. Could this be a virus/malware despite the fact that my antivirus and Malwarebytes programs not showing any evidence of infection? If so, what should I use to scan and get rid of it?

2. What can I do to find my missing folders and documents?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bill

I have a new laptop, a Dell Precision M4400. The first thing I did was a format and a clean install with Windows 7 Ultimate. So far, so good, and it certainly seems to be an improvement over XP.

Being an oldtimer, I like to partition the hard drive and put all of the data folders onto the D: drive. It makes it easy to backup, and lets me reload the operating system without losing information.

Windows 7 lets you change the location of the user folders My Documents, My Music, My Pictures and My Videos. I used that feature to move all to the D: drive.

Since then, in Windows Explorer there folders that were moved are shown as multiples of the D: drive.

In Computer > Local Disk C: > Users > My Account >

the folders are listed as below:

AppData
Contacts
Desktop
Downloads
Favorites
Links
Saved Games
Searches

If, however, I click on my account shown under Desktop in the Explorer, the folders are:

AppData
Contacts
Data D:
Data D:
Data D:
Data D:
Desktop
Downloads
Favorites
Links
Saved Games
Searches

It's not a big deal, but it does seem a bit odd. The location option no longer appears when I right-click the moved folders, so it seems that their existence as those default folders is no longer valid, or it isn't possible to restore them to their original location.

I thought of deleting my account, and creating a new one but that seems a bit extreme as all other functions are good. The registry does show the My Documents, etc. as all being the D: drive, but e... Read more

Hell all. Here is my problem. You see how in the Start Menu you have My Documents, My Music and My Picture. What I want to do is to link those 3 icons to go into the My Docs, My Music and My Picture that I have in my external Hardrive instead of the default place.

I hope you guys understand this. Any way I can do this?

A:Solved: Change My Documents, My Pictures, My Music...

If you clidk Start, then right-click My Documents, and select Properties, then click the "Move" button, you get an opportunity to select another location to store your documents from a small Explorer window. Expand My Computer (click the "+" sign) and you should see your external drive. Select that drive, and then click the "Make New Folder" button, and name the new folder whatever you like (or select an existing folder if it suits your needs). My Music and My Pictures will tag along for the ride automatically.

I keep getting denied access to my own pictures. I am also denied access to my documents and setting folder and several other places. I used windows transfer utility to move data from my old computer to my new one. Now I can't access my own data. I am the only person using the computer and am listed as the administrator by my name. I seem to have access to my word documents.
The error message for documents and setting folder says:location is not available - Documents and Setting is not available - access is denied.
The error message for My Pictures says - Location is not available - C:\users\james harding\documents\My Pictures is not accessible - access is denied.
I have not been able to find on microsoft how to solve this problem. There is so much security (I assume that is what the problem is) that it renders one useless. XP was much more user friendly.

I am trying to save pictures from my camera's SD card to my laptop, but the "My Pictures" option disappeared after saving six or seven photos.  Normally, I click "Save As", and select "My Documents" and then "My Pictures" from the dropdown menu.  But, the option is gone, leaving me with just "My Music" and "My Videos".

It is still in the Start up menu...just gone from the drop down menu.  This happened once with a desktop I owned, but I was able to access a less direct route through the drop down menu (documents to recent documents and then select the folder that I needed), but that option doesn't exist on the laptop.

Rebooting the computer multiple times hasn't helped, and I found that I can't upload them to Facebook to try to direct them back to me because the "My Pictures" option isn't available in the drop down menu.

I have asked several people, but no one seems to know what is going on.  Can anyone help?

A:My Pictures has disappeared from My Documents...Can't Save Pics XP Pro

Sounds like the program path to the My Pictures folder was unintentionally changed.

Look at your home drive (usually C) for  C:/Documents and Settings /<your user name> /My Documents/My Pictures

If  it isn't there, but somewhere else you can use the search tool to locate your pictures by typing in the search box either My Pictures or *.jpg  (the later will find all jpg pictures on your computer wherein you can open  a couple thumbnails that you know should be in my pictures and click on properties to see where they now reside.)

Here's info on how to reset The My Pictures folder pathway:
Windows keeps the path to special folders like My Pictures in the registry key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders
Rather than manually editing to reset the key, you can use TweakUI Power Tool  - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310176
or the Microsoft FixIt Tool   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549#FixItForMeAlways

You also state you can't access the Recent menu. You should see an option for this if you hit the start key  > taskbar & start menu > customize > advanced. Then see if there's a check by List my most recently opened documents .

This does this with everything from MSWord to Photoshop, it will randomly tell me that I do not have permission to save files either in My Documents or My Pictures and whatever program I was using writes a 0bytes jpg, png, docx, etc that is NOT deletable! it ALWAYS says "You need permission from the computer's administrator to perform this action" But I AM the administrator, the program wrote a 0 byte file that I cannot delete. the folders in My Documents and My Pictures is littered with 0 byte files that I cannot delete. I tried using the "take ownership" right click registry hack, it says it was successful at taking ownership but nothing could be further from the truth. it still says "You need permission from the computer's administrator to perform this action"

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

A:random "You don't have permission to write" in my documents and my pictures

From what I read Vista won't allow these folders to just be deleted. In fact, it recreates them when you do delete them.

But is there some way to "officially" get rid of those folders?
I am sure it is a surprise to MS but I don't use any of the three I mentioned.

I understand you can move them but that isn't what I want. If not get rid of them completely, can they "officially" be renamed? Seems like this might mix up the Junction Points function though?

Hi,

My Documents, pictures and music are not working.

However, I can see them in the thumbnail at the bottom bar. They just don't launch. I can't access them.

This maybe because I was trying to make an old game called Master of Orion 2 work.

Master of Orion II - Anyone got it to work correctly?

I created a batch file that might be responsible for this to disable explorer and a task kil as below:

6. Go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64. Copy dplayx.dll, and rename the copy to dplay.dll.
7. Create a batch file and copy the lines below into it:

TASKKILL /F /IM "explorer.exe"
cd C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Microprose\Orion2
start /w C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Microprose\Orion2\Orion95.exe
start C:\Windows\explorer.exe

How do I undo this and have access to document, pictures and music folders?

Any help appreciated.

I have a user on our network who has had a problem we have not been able to solve and it has started to become political. When opening word documents (Office XP) with pictures embedded -some are Visio drawings, the pictures won't show. If she clicks on the space where the pictures are, sometimes they show, sometimes they don't. It also locks her computer except her mouse which works just fine. No-one else has these problems, not even with the same document. The size of the document does not matter, nor does the location. She has gone through 3 new machines in the last couple of weeks while we have been trying to find the cause of the problem. Running Windows XP, we have not noticed any high CPU cycles, errors in the event viewer or anything. We have doubled the RAM in her computer with the same result. We have blown away her profile and let it rebuild itself. All is well for a while, then it comes right back. We run McAfee VirusScan which maybe is the culprit, but the system says otherwise. Does anyone have any idea what we could look into? All systems are patched to the latest.

My current aging computer has an internal 750GB HDD, which is made up mostly of files inside My Documents/My Pictures/My Music/My Videos folders. I just ordered the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 w/ 256GB SSD. I also ordered an external USB 3.0 500GB SSD, so that between the Surface's 256GB SSD and the external 500GB SSD I can transfer all my data from my aging computer.

My question: I would like to set up Windows 8.1 so that the Surface Pro 2 with its 256GB SSD will include the OS, apps, and My Documents folder, and that the attached external USB 3.0 500GB SSD will hold the My Pictures/My Music/My Videos folders. If I'm away from home for the day (or a few days), I will only take the Surface Pro 2 with me and likely leave the external SSD behind because I mostly use the stuff in My Documents.

So, specifically, I'd like to know if you think I should set up Windows with all these folders on the Surface Pro 2, but have the My Pictures/My Music/My Videos folders be empty except for a LINK to folders on the external SSD which will include the actual content (files) of these folders, or should I actually MOVE those three system folders from the 256GB SSD onto the external 500GB drive?

Thanks so much,
Mike

A:Splitting My Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos to 2 HDDs

Hello Mike,

I would suggest to install OS to the laptop and keep and the folders in external drive. As you mentioned that you use My Documents mostly, you can copy that folder in your laptop.
