Downloads replaced by .tmp files and unable to find some infected files

Q: Downloads replaced by .tmp files and unable to find some infected files

Hi and thank you for reading me
Several days ago, I launched a in-depth scan with avast! and a few problems popped-up. Most of them were called PUP and were located in my Temporary Internet Files. I found the ones for IE and deleted them but I don't know if Mozilla has its own separate files. Furthermore, one identified as a trojan was located in my Windows Defender scans file (I have the name of the specific infected file if that might help) but I can't find it and even if I did, I don't know what to do with it. Do I just delete it or do I have to do anything else ?
Also prior to that scan, I had very bad network connexion problems. I basically couldn't have access to the web for one of those three reasons :
- Home network but no Internet access
- Unidentified network with Internet access
- Unidentified network and no Internet access
Someone suggested that I might be infected so I did the scan. Now after that, my connexion is much better but not flawless, so I'm wondering if those PUP's might have something to do with it.
Lastly, I've been trying to download .exe files from several hosting sites and everytime I do, in the last few seconds of my download, Mozilla freezes. Seconds later, the file is supposedly on my computer and what I find instead is a file named trzF636.tmp The problem only ever comes with hosting sites and it's K-I-L-L-I-N-G me !
So yeah, those are basically all of my problems and I don't know if I'm really infected because now, when I scan my computer, nothing shows up ! I've just invested in a better A/V program but I'd like to get rid of any potential threat before I install anything new.
I hope I was clear enough in my explanation and if not, do feel free to ask me any question I'd feel very grateful to anyone who can help

A: Downloads replaced by .tmp files and unable to find some infected files

Hello Lullay -
First PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program (usually a minor problem or unwanted add-on)
As a rule, you can delete these -
"trzF636.tmp" is a randomly named Temporary File that we will now remove.
Please download Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:
Download TFC from the link above and save the file on your desktop.
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon - Vista, Win7, & 8, users - Right click and select "Run as administrator"
When the program opens, click on the Start button.
TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.
Where are you attempting to download .exe files from, and what are they for ??
Please download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.
Thank You -

I recently sent my laptop to HP for a fan repair and before I sent it off I accidentally deleted my Downloads folder and then cleared out my recycling bin. Well, I got my laptop back today and went to download a few files. After doing so, I realized that I can't find those downloaded files.

I have no idea where those files went. They were .rar and ZIP files and I can't seem to locate them. Does anybody know how I can find those downloaded files (where they might have ended up with the Downloads folder gone) and how I can restore my Downloads folder?

Hello, I have come across a slight problem, I use Google Chrome to download pictures, videos and such, I've set the default location to download said files is the "My Pictures" Folder, but when I choose to save a picture to the file it just says that I cant save it there, and to choose another location, It does it with every other main folder except "Downloads" folder, anything can go in there. I have ran AVG and Malware bytes to see if it could possibly be a virus, but no luck.

This problem hasn't been around long, and I'm already pulling my hair out over it, I was able to do it before, but unable now.

I have also attached a picture as evidence.

I am running Windows 7 x64, and still haven't made a backup

Thanks in Advance

I have been running into some issues with my computer for a while and after trying several things I decided to run SFC scan. It claims to have found corrupt files it could not repair but when I followed Option 3 from SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and opened the sfcdetails.txt file it shows everything as verify complete and no errors or corrupt files. I am attaching the sfcdetails.txt file as well as the cbslog.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
When I plug in an SD card or USB drive into my computer all the files and folders are replaced with .lnk files with the same name as the original. In addition, all the files and folders are hidden, and I don't seem to be able to unhide them.
This does not happen every time I plug it in, but it happens fairly often. The motive behind the lnks is clear when I look at its properties. Here is an example of what one looks like replacing a file named splash.lua:

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c "start %cd%splash.lua & start %cd%wyNdYUwEdFccnce.exe & exit"
It is starting another hidden file which is the virus.
I've run full scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware, and Avast free Antivirus, but they found nothing. I even tried Malwarebytes AntiRootkit, and it found nothing either.
Possibly related to this, a folder appeared in the root of both my hard drive partitions called $Recycle.Bin. I've heard of other people with this identifying it as malware, so I figured I should mention it.
However, the thing that worries me most is that if I didn't notice that the files were .lnks, I would have no idea anything fishy is going on at all. My antiviruses said nothing, and there's no reason to think I would have a virus.
Is there anyway to be sure there is no malware at all after I take care of it? For all I know, someone could be recording all my passwords and everything I type and I would have no idea.
Thank you very... Read more

Seeing that no one responded to your topic yet, I'd suggest you open another one in
I would approach your problem using Farbars Recovery Scan Tool, but as per forum rules I can't give you instructions regarding that on this forum, so I can't help you in that regard in this topic.
When you create another topic in the other forum section you could include a report from USBFix: (alternate download: click "descargar").
Once downloaded start it as administrator (right click > run as admin) and when prompted connect your drives containing .lnk files. After that click 'research'. When completed a report will open (can also be found at C:\usbfix.txt). Post that one to your new topic.
You can open USBFix once again and this time press 'listing'. It will create another report detailing your various filesystem root locations. Attach that log file, too.
Best of luck.

I have an ASUS Sabertooth Intel P67 (REV B3) motherboard and Windows 7 Ultimate. I removed the Generic USB Hub from the Devices Manager, thinking I can reinstall it because I've been having issue with USB devices. When I tried to reinstall it, I keep getting "Unable to find files" for the "Generic USB Hub".

When I do an online search it fails. When I do file search @"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERSTORE\FILEREPOSITORY" it fails. Where can I get the Microsoft drivers for Generic USB Hub?

Hi. I am having a problem with the above message and when I go to the Microsoft driver download site, it's getting me half way towards trying to install updates, but then when I have to get the activation key I get this message, I am also getting this message when I try to open any links to other things from an email. so I can't get round the problem. I don't have the Windows 7 disc as it was pre-loaded onto my Acer all in one when I purchased it so I can't even reinstall anything. I do have the Microsoft office package. Please can someone help?

A:unable to find locale data files

Have you tried this solution from Microsoft?

Also, if you are considering to restore it to factory settings even if OS is just pre-loaded, in the recovery mode you should be able to do this. And that is if you see a recovery partition drive in My Computer.

I'm having problems getting Norton Anti Virus 2003 installed. Install works fine until it comes to reboot. The Wizard that is supposed to come up does not. When I try to OPEN NAV from my desktop nothing happens.

Troubleshooting says to run the web virus scan, which finds 17 files infected with a Trojan Horse, (no indication of which variant).

All the files are 'tray.exe' but when I attempt to delete them I
can't find the directory that NAV says they are in, ("c:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.01....02...03, etc, etc").

I use MS Explorer to 'find' them but it can't see them.

I right-click on the WINDOWS subdirectory, 'Downloaded Program Files' and select 'scan with Norton Anti Virus' and it see's them.

I'm running Win98se and I've got 'show all files' selected in the VIEW options.

Where do I go from here?

Hi guys, I have a problem. My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.). The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos).

I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important. Please help me if you can. Thanks.

P.S. Both my laptop and my PC are Vista. If I need to provide any other info please ask. Thanks again. My personal email is smarty_j_shields AT

Ive done a search of the string "[sr] cannot repair member file" but the text file comes back empty Ive also created a details.text per hundred operations and this shows no problems. Ive noticed that there is no end of verification notice at the end of each CBS log and the repaired files seem to be the same files that where repaired during the last SFC. Does anybody know what might be going on here and how I can correct it?

We need the actual cbs.log file. If it is too large to upload here you can upload it to a file share like rapidshare and give us the link to it.

If sfc is saying there are files it cannot fix you are probably going to have to do at least a repair install if not a clean re-install.

For that you will need the win 7 dvd, a backup (just is case) and a restore point.

( Windows XP Medica Center not use Media Center at this time)

Did a Disk Cleanup this morning in anticipation of doing a Defrag. I checked "compress old files" because it sounded like a good idea....apparently not.
In the midst of doing this, I got the message
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows myst restore the original versions of these files. Insert your now."

No, that is not a says "insert your now" does not designate what to insert. I inserted the Dell Reinstallation DVD and I get the message that I've inserted the wrong CD.
After reading a post on this sitefrom someone with a somewhat similar problem, I looked for the I386 folder and it is ON the hard drive.

I have done a virus scan (Trend Mico PC-Cillan Internet Security Suite 12, installed by Dell and it found nothing.

Do I have the option of not restoring the original files? Could this possibly occur from some Windows update? Or because I skipped the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification update? Would doing a system restore to a point yesterday help?

I am not comfortable doing much of anything to a computer, and I'd probably have to get someone to come do a reinstall if that's the only option.

As a side note, when I turned on my printer, I got the Windows File Protection notice about unrecognized files again, along with the "you have inse... Read more

...and some other problems.

I downloaded some .exe file earlier today that installed all this crap on my computer. I've been cleaning it up for hours literally. I've gone down my list of programs in Add/Remove Programs and there is one called IE Host that I can't get rid of. When I click uninstall, it does something where it says 'downloing uninstaller' (yes downloing), then it asks me why I'm uninstalling and then says uninstall complete but it's still there and if I click uninstall again, that process starts again.

I ran Spybot and AdAware and was able to get rid of a bunch of it but there are two files that are set to run at startup that I can see by going to msconfig but I can't find the actual files to delete and no virus scan or program will pick up the files to delete. Even if I uncheck them to run at startup, one of them runs every time I start Internet Explorer. I'm also getting a pop up that asks me if I want to keep running scripts and the URL is something like The files are:

Dear kind people (grovel, grovel)

I seem to have been infected with a virus. I noticed this first when both my anti virus and firewall stopped working. On attempting to start them manually, I received an error message stating that the *.exe files were "not valid Win32 applications" - this is where the screaming started.

I tried to open other programs and again was either presented with an error message stating that the application was "not a valid Win32 application", or they refused to work such as my KMPlayer which seemed to have lost all codecs. My Video driver started to play up and the internet was exceedingly slow and would crash.

Before discovering your site I had un-installed my video drivers and both the anti virus and firewall apps and tried to reinstall them but they again returned error messages saying that they were yes, not valid Win32 applications.

I went to Esat to buy some decent anti virus software, via the 30 day trial, but upon downloading the apps and installing them the services could not be started so I am a bit flummoxed.

Upon doing a search for the error message "not a valid Win32 application" I discovered your site and followed the five steps. This has removed or disinfected some of the malware via the Panda scanner, but some remains - srosa.sys and hldrrr.exe seem to be the nasties

Unfortunately the highjackthis app returns a "not a valid Win32 application" error message but the Panda log ... Read more

I first clicked DVD-VIDEO FILES BUTTON , then pressed ADD,but when i click ADD i can't find any of my video files or music files or anything at all, can someone please help me. this only happens with the DVD options because when i click on MAKE AN AUDIO CD or VIDEO CD all the files are there when i click ADD. im using nero express 6.I would appresiate it very much if someone could help me.

A:nero express burn DVD-VIDEO files, can't find my files

Nero Express is only going to burn previously authored DVD files. The 'Add' box is looking for .bup, .vob, or .ifo files, to add to the Video-TS folder on the left.

Did you create a DVD using another program? The full version of Nero has the '“Make Your Own DVD-Video' option.

At the top of the first screen, after Nero opens, choose your DVD drive with the CD option. Then you will get the Video CD option.

I'm currently running in Windows 98 SE, My excel 2000 is currently infected by the Toraja.Gen virus, which can easily be cleaned by any Anti Virus software, but afterwards I'm unable to open any Excel related files.

A Brief Description of the Toraja.Gen Virus taken from the Symantec Web Site:
O97M.Toraja.Gen is a macro virus, which infects Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel documents. In Word it infects the template, and in Excel it contaminates the \XLStart folder with an infected Excel workbook. Many standard menu functions are overridden, making them inaccessible.
It infects the file (Microsoft Word) or inserts a copy of the infected workbook in the \XLStart folder with the file name Start12.xls.

I already tried cleaning with McAfee Anti-Virus (Updated everyday) 3 times just in case, I also already tried uninstalling, reboot, then re-installing my Microsoft Office, but to no avail. The Excel program keeps asking me that the Start12.xls is not found everytime I tried opening a file. The only way I could open a file is by infecting my computer with the virus again. Could anybody help me out?

A:Infected by Toraja.Gen Virus: unable to open any Excel related files

After cleaning the virus, did you rename the template normal.old or anything to force a new one to be created.

And if you run regedit navigate to this key:

do you see in the Right hand pand the Value name: Xlstart

And the Value Data: XLSTART

Did you delete Start12.xls from the xlstart folder? You might also want to search the registry for any references to Start12.xls and substitute XLSTART

If no luck, I'll move you to the Business Applications forum; I'm not really familiar with Excel and you might get better help there

FIXED - I merged a reg-file I found here on the site (a thread from 2009 by susanbd..(?) - I can't really remember, by try to search in the Virus & Malware Removal), and reebooted.

Hi everyone.
First of all I have tried to follow the three steps as suggested before posting but I am unable to do so, as the virus will not let me open any of the programs downloaded.
Secondly, I have seen some of the threads for this type of virus before, but I can't seem to do perform the steps proposed, so this is why I open a new thread.

I have a virus, that at first I thought changed my exe to lnk files, but now I actually think it changes the type of file associated with the program. All the files in the start menu, quick-icons, and the desktop now appear as "word"-files if I choose one of them to be opened in word, whereas if I e.g. choose Itunes for one they all change into this filetype. When right-clicking the icons on the desktop or in the start-menu the programs can be accessed by either choosing the path under "target" (icons on desktop) or "open file location" (in the start menu). Thus, the files can be accessed in their directories but not as quick-icons, in the start menu or the desktop. I know it has something to do with the association of the files, but what to do exactly?

Btw, all JPEG and folders are working fine, the virus just targeted the lnk-files. also the bin works. Additionally, I can't create new shortcuts as they inst... Read more

Recent AVAST free AV scans have returned several infected files on my laptop. I'm supposed to have the option to either repair them, move them to the chest, or delete them. The instructions read "select the required action for each result and click 'Apply'" My problem is that the "Apply" button does not work. I selected Move to Chest and clicked "Apply," but nothing at all happened.

As of late, my AVAST virus scan results have been difficult to figure. More than once I've run a scan which indicated that there were one or more viruses, which, as described above, I was unable to manage. However, when I immediately ran another scan it showed no infected file(s). Also, one regular scan turned up an infected file (also unmanageable), but the Boot Scan I ran immediately thereafter indicated there were no infected files! Also, the results invariably state that "some files could not be scanned."

More often than not my recent AV scans have indicated one or more infected files. Could it be that these results are false positives?

One further note. Just before running HijackThis, I got the following message:

For some reason your system denied write access to Hosts file. If any hijack domains are in this file HijackThis may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start,Run and type:

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

Hello, Please help me. I have Windows 2000 Professional. I'm pretty new to all this as I have only had a computer for about a week. I got some adware threats detected by Norton Antivirus 2004 and have done a lot of reading up and I am now tring to delete them.

One of the removal instructions provided by Norton promps me to delete a file in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files but when I go to view this folder it looks like there are no files inside. Now, I know there are files in there as Norton Antivirus has picked up one in there and when I view the proporties for that folder it states there are 12 files inside but when I view the folder with Windows Explorer it appears empty!

I've gone into folder option and changed the settings so it shows hidden files and hidden system files yet this still doesn't let me view the files in this folder. How can I delete this file if I am unable to view it?

If anyone can point me to a turorial that explains this or explain it to me I would really appreciate this.

Please help a n00b.

Cheers, Luke.

A:Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

I'm assuming you have done this to Show hidden files and folders:
Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Also, place a check in "Display the contents of system folders"
And,uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"

If the above doesn't work try this:
Create the REG_DWORD ShowSuperHidden (if it doesn't already exist) Set the value to 1, click OK, and close the Registry editor

I was trying to see a file using Notepad yesterday and, afterwards, every .exe program on my computer turned into a Notepad document. Files such as .doc and .png still seem to work, and when they are clicked they open their respective programs (ex: a Word document on my desktop opens Word). However, .exe such as Chrome and the File Manager do not, and I'm currently forced to use someone else's computer. I've searched around the internet and everything I have found suggested modifying the registry. Since they all give the same instructions, I decided I would try. However, they would all require the use of Command Prompt and/or Regedit, and I have discovered that they, too, have become Notepad documents.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. For the record, I'm using Windows 7.
Links I've looked up:

A:.exe files have been replaced with Notepad

I have successfully restored my computer. I went to the link below and used the download for .exe files. While web browsers and File Manager on the problem computer did not work, a USB was able to do the job.

An error messages appears whenever I try to extract a folder to Program Files. It reads 'Cannot create folder C:\Program Files\Mozilia Firefox\abc'. I tried to first create the folder inside Program Files manually and then direct the extraction to it when I was prompted to choose the destination but it still wouldn't work. It says 'Cannot create folder so and so' and under that 'Access is denied'. I am using the computer as an administrator so I was bewildered when the message appeared. I am thinking that somehow the setting is preventing me to take control over Program Files. Vista's not so user friendly in this aspect.

Any thoughts?

Last week I booted up my laptop & was taken to a desktop page that was completely different. All of my shortcuts were gone. A message flashed by telling me that a "temporary" password had been created for me. It did not say what the password was. Then it was gone. The message also told me to contact my system administrator. I then made a terrible mistake. I went to This PC/Windows (C)/Users/Amador/Desktop and there were my shortcuts. I put my pictures, Open Office & ODT documents back on my desktop. I still could not go back to my regular desktop but was not too concerned. I also had not a trace of my Firefox program. I downloaded & reinstalled Firefox. My No Script Security Suite was also gone. I reinstalled No Script which requests a restart to enable the program. After I restarted my laptop everything was again gone from my desktop. My pictures & ODT documents were gone. Also, my HP One Drive Files are gone. I did run Hijack This & it would appear that most of my Win files are missing. I did not attempt to change or delete anything.

I was wondering if you could help me with a tech problem.

Its for a desktop running windows 2000. Its getting this error:

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM now.
If the windows 2000 cd is in the drive and pressed ok, nothing happens and error reapears,
if cancel is pressed the message goes away and everything is fine, until its time to reboot.

Im supposed to identify what is causing the problem , and to identify a solution to this problem
What Ive come up so far is that the files needed for the system to boot properly have been either tampered with, or corrupted and these needs to copied and replaced by the Windows 2000 CD.

Could this be what is causing the problem. And also how would i go about copying these files from the Windows 2000 CD, if this is the case.
Can you please help

replace important booting files?

I need to know all the files that can be replaced with a Windows Recovery CD. I deleted some files, thinking they were all malicious, and I think they were. However, I think they binded themselves with important files or something. Anyway, now when I boot, I get a blue screen for less than one second and it restarts. I want to replace all the possible files. The data on there is really important to me and I cannot lose it. I can't access it through another hard drive; it says access is denied to my Documents and Settings user (Administrator). The reason I deleted these files was because I had some strain of Vundo, god I hate the people that made it!

I really hope you guys can help me... I really need like a list of the files I can replace. Thanks a lot

Whenever I wan to download a file such as a pdf. the popup window with the "Save/open/save as" appears at the bottom of IE11 but when I click on it nothing happens. I can not get it to do any of the three options. If I try "save as" I should get the directory window to open prompting for a path and file name, but I get nothing.

If I open a new tab in IE11 the eight boxes showing the "Frequent" sites I visit are all blank

Some sites with streaming video will not play, I get "error" when it attempts to buffer.

This morning I went to fetch a small animated gif file to attach to an email and I found the folder that used to have about 150 animated gifs in it was empty and had one single file left in it called
!cid_part1.3C56E)F6 no extension on it and file size about 4.7K

So I went to my backup drive to see if I could find them there. Same thing - the old copy of the folder has just that single !cid file that isn't an animation and all the old saved ones are gone.

Finally I picked out one of my old CDs that had photos backed up on it and the Animations Folder there also has lost all its contents and has the !cid file sitting on it.

I have accessed the folder and picked out an animation in the last year but the CD back up was made five years ago. So is this a result of a virus infection? Or have the files self destructed? I can't fathom this one as I've never deleted any of the animated gifs that were in there.

I'm now desperately trying a massive search for *.gif to see if they're displaced somehow. But it really has foxed me totally. Anyone know what this could be?

A:Solved: All my Animated Gif files vanished replaced by !cid

The files showed up in a backed up folder on the external drive so I've guessed that during a backup the orignal may have got moved or accidentally emptied.
This doesn't explain why they are also missing from a much earlier backed up CD of all my photos but at least I have got them back now.

I still think my PC has a problem with symbols in file names. Recently a .jpg file with % in the filename refused to be visible when attached to an email. When I renamed it - the file returned to normal. So I've renamed all the !cid files and hope that the problem is cured.

Replaced the 5 config files, still won't boot up. hangs after 20 boot files loaded right after mup.sys is loaded. computer is old, loaded with everything and Spybot has made changes.
Last change involved a microsoft update, complex virus checker which is now modified or removed by Spybot and I think XP is still looking to boot it and hanging there.

I got what i think is a virus from limewire. Basically what it did was the folder where all of my limewire downloads are placed as well as my music, it zipped all nearly 1000 of these files. Whenever i try to unzip these files, they unzip, but the actual file that is extracted is setup.exe. I dont know where to turn because i dont want to lose half of my music collection. The files are on my ipod but all of the ipod rippers ive used havent worked. setup.exe is 408k, and everytime i turn on my computer Norton antivirus recognizes it and gets rid of it. That is basically all i know about this.

thankyou for your time

A:Setup.exe zipped and replaced music files

Well thats what you get for using a P2P software..
The next post your going to get is from a tech guy here from TSF saying he will have to close this thread..
So i will be quick. Download this virus protector download the free home edition.. You will need to register but thats free aswell.
Once you have installed it, the program will ask you if you want to Scan your HDD Offline. Click yes. once the installation is complete your pc wil restart. On startup windows will partly load and a blue screen will appear, This is Avast scanning your entire HDD if it finds any viruses follow the on-screen instructions.

Then after all that the first thing you should do is get rid of Limewire or any P2P software as its bound to happen again

A:Files to run windows replaced by unrecognizable ones. Please advise

Is that the exact message? I have never seen it reported before and an exact quote does not get any hits as it would for any standard MS message.

The only problems I see in the Scanlog are the inclusion of these items in the "trusted" zone:

O15 - Trusted Zone:

O15 - Trusted Zone:

And they would be entirely unrelated to your startup problem.

Try going to Start > Run and enter:

sfc /scannow

This is supposed to check files and replace missing or corrupt ones. You may be prompted for an installation or Service Pack CD. It may also complete without a prompt and replace files without any other action on your part.

You may get the same prompts about "retry"; keep doing that and see if any progress can be made, even if you have to continue doing it for a while. This is sometimes the case when Windows has trouble searching for the correct path to restore from.

Every time the user logs in to windows a message pops up indicating protected system files have been replaced and insert the Windows XP SP1 disk to repair them. I insert the XP disk and the files are copied over and the system functions without any issues however when the system is rebooted and the user logs back in the same message appears. Do I need to boot to the WinXP CD and perform a repair or is there another way to resolve this issue?

Hello new forum, my name is Becca and I have been advised to post in here. First, I would like to say thank you for what help I have received, and your patience and guidance. Ok let me start at the beginning. Around the end of September or beginning of October my laptop started acting krazy. I would check for Windows updates and try to download and install them only to have them fail, or all fail but 1 or 2 would go through. And one day it said I had 61 updates, because it had not updated in over a week. So I had already been trouble shooting, me reading articles and feed back in MIcrosoft support or or on Microsoft -tech. Then I notice one day this user “Updatus” came up. Well there is no one on my laptop ever, just me. I went back again trouble shooting and went word for word in this steps found on Microsoft support to remove this account. I backed up a copy of my registry keys first and then I thought I had this account deleted only for it to be back tomorrow. The next day, I am changing some settings in control panel and was going to back up some stuff when I get this error message saying I could not back up because files in the Task Scheduler were corrupt or tampered with. So when I opened the Task Scheduler Ig showed me that HP Active Health Scan (HPSA)was the same error, along with all of these;pc health Analysis, HP Support Solutions, Frame work updates, MC updates_scheduler, Dis... I'm also including a copy of what I think is my Hijack this report. Please let me know if more info is needed. I can post copies of other reports.I'm still having the same problem as original post.I must have done something.....I opened Firefox and everything was very plain. No add ons, no crazy overloaded toolbar, the settings looked like default and my computer was running slower. I've recently downloaded a few trial programs but not a lot of changes besides combining and renaming picture and document files (which is a constant thing I'm always doing to stay organized). I checked this forum and another regarding the problem and followed advice given to others. I read about how Firefox loses setting when closed improperly so I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. No improvement. I uninstalled the trial programs (windows repair pro? and spyware terminator). When I first checked on Control Panel, add/delete programs, the Spyware Terminator was listed at using 7,488 MB. That is crazy! And is it even possible? I immediately deleted it.I've also cleared unneccessary start up/services programs.I know there are resources that give ten easy steps to a faster running computer and so on but I'd like to check with you guys to see if there is anything besides what I've mentioned and defragging, reboot, etc. that I c... Hello All! sorry for vague title, I didn't want to make multiple threads taking up space. This is my first post, I read how to post, I'm a little tired and I apologize if I missed something. I recently replaced my mother board to a MSI X58a-GD45 I did format and re-install windows and I keep getting BSODs randomly as well as gaming in BF3. Below are my specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Mobo: MSI X58A-GD45
Processor: Intel i7 970
Ram: Corsair Dominator 6GB Tri Channel (XMS Profile)
HDD 180GB Intel SSD (OS) + 1TB WD (Programs + Storage)
Graphics Cards: (2) PNY XLR8 560Ti 1GB Running in SLI
Sound: Creative Titanium HD PCI-e

Tests So far:
Memtest 86+ for about 5 hours
SFC / scannow command
Other Misc Hardware Tests for Mem, Processor, and Mobo
Disk Check

and everything checked out good. Updated video driver, sound driver, Ive done all that I can think of and I'll keep getting random BSODs. Ive gotten 8 in a week or less.

Here are a few of the stop codes that I got a look at:

Some of the BSODs did not have stop codes, I looked in the event view and just said something about kernal Power, and some I didn't get a chance to take down, but they should have DMP files with I have included in my attachment using the SF tool. I know its a lot to go through, But I GREATLY appreciate any of the help I get! Trying to find out if its just software, or what, and If I need to replace my Mobo again.

Let me know if there is anything else needed.

As described in the topic, after a malware attack the option to show hidden files on my pc has changed into a string of question marks.

I have since cleaned up the malware and any viruses on my pc (at least I hope so, MBAM and Avira are reporting no infected files) but the question marks still remain. Would anyone here have a clue how I can restore it back? Alternatively is there a way I can double-check that my laptop is really rid of all traces of virus.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

The My Downloads folder contains at least a hundred files with a .cab extension (e.g. Are these important or can I delete them?

A:Unnecessary files in My Downloads?

It might be a good idea to find out where they came from in case they are something you want. But, generally speaking, there is nothing ever in a simple downloads folder that the machine needs to operate.

A cabinet file is an archive, like a zip file, and can be opened to see the files inside. You may need an archiver to do that. Some are of a type that can't be opened at all (data files for some installers, for example).

Free multi-format archiving suites:

ZipStar (Zip, Cab, and Sqx, which achieves better compression than Zip.)
Zip Central

(It is possible that those files are from an illegal bittorrent download of a game, like, oh, "Pro Evolution Soccer"?)

I have been downloading trial software today and have uninstalled it all, but I have a problem now. An MHT file that I was using as my default home page no longer opens. Instead, IE wants to download the file (from my desktop to my downloads folder).Until very recently the file(or any .mht file) opened in IE10 just fine.
Now, IE10 will only download .mht files of any kind (not open them).
Chrome and Firefox do NOT exhibit the problem, they open the .mht files just fine.
I have a very simple example .mht attached, which will NOT open in IE10 for me, but opens in my other browsers just fine. A screen snapshot demonstrates the file is open in chrome (in the background) while in the foreground, IE is trying to download the file, prompting me to save it.

Environment: Windows 7 Pro (v 6.1 build 7601: SP1) with IE 10.0.9200.16721CO
Note: I have tried resetting IE back to all default settings. I have NOT tried to reinstall it.
I have a growing collection of .mht related forum posts across the web in a file folder now, none of which has produced an answer that works for me yet.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download the .mht to your desktop
2. Open IE (my home page is current, as shown in the picture)
3. Type in the location of the saved .mht file, example: file:///c:/users/yourname/desktop/demo.mht
4. Observe that the .mht file did not open; instead it tried to download to downloads directory.

Today's nightmare is: I upgraded to 64 bit from a 32 bit machine months ago. Even though I have Tools/Options set to have downloads go directly to Program Files, I've discovered that my downloads are going to the old Program Files (x86) folder, e.g., I just download Secunia PSI and when opened in Program Files, the old version was there but the new version 3.0 is in PF (x86). I tried to cut and paste it to PF but it didn't work. I have a download Firefox extension, Download Status Bar, that I really like; it works great.
I know that some programs in 64 bit need the old 32 bit version trom PF (x86) to work but I'd like to delete PF (x86). Would that be OK?
Your ideas about why this is happening will be greatly appreciated. ec

A:Downloads going to old Prog Files x86 folder

Windows 7 x64 stores all 32 bit applications in Program file (x86). This is normal and the intended function of Program file (x86).
it is not a remnant of an old 32 bit version of Windows 7.

Hey, everyone. For the past while (I'm not entirely sure how long), I've been seeing tons of CAB files in my Downloads folder. Most of them are titled something like "Mar2008_d3dx9_37_x64," which leads me to believe that they're drivers of some sort, but I have no idea where they've come from. There are dozens of them, to the point where I no longer use my Downloads folder because it's so much easier to find things when I put them on my Desktop. I've read that Vista doesn't really use CAB files anymore, but I'm hesitant to get rid of them for fear of something bad happening. Does anyone know where they came from/what I can or should do? Thanks a bunch.

I have recently noticed that when I try to download software (.exe) from the Internet, every single setup file I download comes out corrupt. It's the same for all updates I've tried for various applications, and I know it's not the site the files are coming from because I can't even download updates from the Windows site. I have tried saving the files instead of running them directly after the download, and the same thing happened.

I'll usually get a message like "the .exe file you are attempting to run has been corrupted" or "the setup files are corrupted", but occasionally the programs "fail to initialize". Hi. I just started noticing a problem recently with downloading anything from a browser. I use Firefox normally, and everything was all good until I tried downloading a driver off the Dell website and when it finishes download, it will never run. I always get an error message. I tried downloading the same file with IE, and it still does not run. I thought it might have been a problem with the file, but I've tried downloading different files without luck. I thought it might be a Firefox problem, so I uninstalled Firefox, and now I can't download Firefox back into my computer using IE (file downloads as Firefox 26.0 stub.exe) and it doesn't run.

I have no problems downloading torrents, but I use uTorrent. I'm not sure what exactly is going on. Does anyone have any clue as to what's happening?

Some extra notes:
- The file shows that it is a completed download. When I go to run it, it pops up an error message.
- I have tried downloading different things from different sites, and nothing works.
- I have tried shutting off my AV and malware programs, and still no luck.
- Seems to be browser related because I can download from my gmail and torrents.

I'd try using System Restore to roll back my computer to a date/time prior to when this problem first started.

System Restore

I'd also run a full anti-virus scan. I'd supplement that with another full scan using the free product called Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes Free

Hi,My McAfee antivirus and all other scans (such as the rootkit scanner) show 0 files scanned. Microsoft updates are sketchy and I only know enough to be dangerous. Small "about blank" pop=up screens showed up when I tried to download lavasoft & spybot so I'm sorry but I thought I'd better give you the Hijack this log before I made it worse (Even got other moving pop-ups on lavasoft when trying to download). Here's the Hijack this log - Thanks for any help you can give!Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 12:28:33 AM, on 8/24/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16512)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exeC:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\Mcshield.exeC:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\VsTskMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\UTStarcom\Sprint\Sprint PCS Connection Manager\CMPnC.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.... A:Files Scanned =0, & Downloads Show Bad Certificates

FYI - I tried House Call but supposedly my Java isn't working and the link on their web site to fix or add it won't work for me because the active x won't download (I've tried eveything to allow it but the yellow warning bar won't even pop-up). I also tried the link to Bit Defender (I think) but it shows as an invalid web address. Anything I can get to download (lavasoft, etc)shows an invalid certificate and notes that my revocation checker supposedly is unable to check the cert.

Please help!!! Maybe I'm just missing some files (I'm keeping my fingers crossed) but I'm just not knowledgeable enough to know.

PS - The version of Macafee I'm running is Enterprise 8.5.0i and I tried the virtual advisor but the cert was bad & it didn't work right anyway.
Thanks for any advise you can give!

I'm going to put my previous post regarding my problems with corrupted DLL files following a clean install after a major crash. This is for background purposes:
[[Just finished a clean install of Windows XP Home. Computer had black screen with error message. I made several attempts at repairing system using the original install disk. Did multiple malware and virus sweeps. Finally got it working again but it refused to update Windows Security files, constant crashes, hangs, etc. After more repair attempts and malware sweeps gave up and did clean install after backing up my files.

After spending 12 hours on the process of the clean install, installing antivirus software, browsers and security updates, the most recent Windows updates were installed as I restarted (for the 679th time today) whereupon the next bootup was preceded by the computer running CHKDSK on the blue screen. It tried to continue the boot, then went into a cycle of rebooting after the Windows loading screen (before you enter your personal account). Everytime this happened, I saw a blue screen with white type flashing by for a fourth of a second. I couldn't start in safe mode, but I managed to stop the automatic restart and here's what the message on the blue screen said:

STOP: C000007b {BAD IMAGE}
The application or DLL \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\GDI32.dll
is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your
installation diskette

A:DLL Files Corrupted by Windows Automatic Downloads

No one needs to use the auto-update's pretty easy to just go to Windows/Microsoft update and download every critical update from there.

I have a Dell Inspiron M5040, 4GB, Windows 7, Avast Internet Security, ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium. All of a sudden, all the exe. files I had from different programs I have installed in my computer are no longer in my Downloads folder; however, the programs themselves are still installed & working. I have already ran a virus check, but nothing. Would appreciate someone's help with this matter to restore the exe. files.

A:exe. files in Downloads folder disappeared in Windows 7

Have you recently run a disk cleanup?
Those files are not necessary for your system to function, but I can understand the desire to keep them handy, just in case you wish to reinstall.

Edge browser worked fine a few days ago but today I had a major headache with it, first any program I downloaded refused to download, if I retried it downloaded a .txt file, choosing 'save as' only gave me text as an option.
Two: Non of my extensions now work, nothing happens.
Three: Upon opening the page crashes & reopens.
Do I need to reinstall AU or is it a wider problem?
I use IE usually but was getting used to Edge.
I have run sfc & no problems found. Also run chkdsk & ok there.

I have recently downloaded Cyberlink's Powerdirector which, complete, contains more than 2G of software. I have attempted to make downloads MANY times with errors like "download corrupted" or "broken". I was, eventually, successful in downloading it. But I have no idea how.
I have also been trying to update the software lately, but I am getting an error saying "MD5 check failed". That file was more than 400MB.

I also maintain the website: Learn Brazilian Portuguese | Learning Portuguese Brazilian | Learning Portuguese Phrases and I am needing to download my site's content and files for backup, but, once again, getting error messages. The file for this is 512MB. I am have been trying to use free download manager, but it keeps failing with connection time outs. It stops at different intervals most everytime. I have tried using free download manager without a proxy.

A:Getting corrupted or broken files when trying to make big downloads

Are you connected via LAN cable or wifi to your router? If wifi, then try using LAN or vice versa. Your ISP could also be the problem.

Do a malware scan with a good antivirus and MalwareBytes: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

Also try downloading without download manager.
