.scr file opened on accident, what do I do?

Q: .scr file opened on accident, what do I do?

Hey guys, just opened up a link on steam from someone and stupidly opened and ran the file which was a .scr.
From a preliminary search it seems that I may have installed a Trojan, so any help would be appreciated.

Running a Windows 7, with the only security software being Microsoft Security Essentials (which a scan didn't turn up anything awry).

Many thanks for any help!

Hi, this is my first posting. :)

My friend was just infected by Spy Sheriff :( He uses Window XP Home edition. He got instruction from an online support, which part of the procedures is for him to use the CleanUp! software and using Custom CleanUp! which invovles the following:

-> Empty Recycle Bins
-> Delete Cookies
-> Delete Prefetch files
-> Scan local drives for temporary files
-> Cleanup! all users

Once he clicked "OK" to CleanUp!All users, his computer lost all icon images, he cannot see any icon on task bar, I.E. and can't even start some applications. But he still have Spy Sheriff on his wall paper :(

Can this be fixed? how?

Please kindly help ASAP!

I accidently deleted the Administrator file and need to know how to get it back where the Owner file is. I moved the file from the Recycle bin by click and hold and moved to desktop. I know I should have restored. Now it has the desktop as its routing (I can't think what else to call it). I can now log on if the error message that says "microsoft cannot log on" stays on the screen long enough to click OK. If the screen does not stay the computer trys to boot up (I guess) but will not do anything until the screen times out and I press a key; than the "microsoft cannot log on" error message will come up and I click OK. Than a screen appears that shows the Owner and I click on it and every thing works all right. I would apprciate any help. Let me know if I need to explain more.

Oh...the horror! I accidentally replaced a file with another file in WordPerfect. Here's what happened: WP had crashed while I was working on a document. I reopened WP, then chose to rename the backed up file by using the name of the original file, thus replacing the pre-crash version. WP even asked me "[Your document name] already exists. Replace?" to which I said yes. Great, right? Wrong...I had chosen to replace a similarly named but MUCH MORE IMPORTANT file with the trivial document that I had been working on. How can I get the original document back?

What I already tried: right-clicking on "Properties" on the document name in Windows Explorer, in search of the "Previous Versions" button (as suggested elsewhere). No. Such. Button. Anywhere.

What I'm running: WP X3 on Windows Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire.

How can I get my old file back? Thanks in advance.

A:Replaced important WP file by accident, need version from an hour ago!

Unless you had a backup there is little chance of getting the overwritten file back.

There was another thread about this, but the solution wasn't clearly explained. A user provided the OP with a Desktop.ink file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.

A pleasant morning to all of you.Wanting to post a hijackthis log in the forum, I went through some guidelines and read them.I learned that I should download a certain file, dds.scr. Having followed all the steps cited, I could not proceed because I could not run the file. Hello lucyjee, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan. Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan. Click on I Agree. Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner. When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer. NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan. When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post the BitDefender log.******************Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner? by Atribune DO NOT run it yet. Hi,

I've opened the file RARpassgen.EXE, it came with a password protected .RAR archive and the readme file which also came with the archive said that you would get the password for the archive by opening RARpassgen.EXE. I didn't trust this so i first scanned RARpassgen.exe with McAfee antivirus, but it said it was clear of any viruses or malicious software, so i opened RARpassgen.EXE anyway. That wasn't so smart. Now i've got all kinds of disturbing pictograms on my desktop like 'gay fetisj.exe' and I had a process called Windowsav.exe running which was never there before. So I think i've got a bad virus but i don't know what i can do about it. I've did a scan already with McAfee after i got infected but it doesn't find anything. Also when I try to delete the file RARpassgen.EXE it gives an error that it cannot be deleted.
Can somebody help me get rid of all this nonsense

Hello all! I'm having a problem opening some JPEG files that a friend sent me through email. I'm running windows XP media center edition, and I can't view the photos in the photo viewer. I get "no preview available". Also, when I try to open the files in the photoimpression software, its says "wrong file format". I can view all other JPEGS fine. It's just the ones from my friends computer. He says I'm the only one who has problems with his emails, so I'm assuming it's on my end. One more thing I should mention is that he's sending these files from a mac computer, but he's using a converter that he says works, because everyone else receives the files correctly.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions as I am at a complete loss.

Thanks.

Hello ..this is a long story...
what happened was, at first, I suspected there to be a spyware on my computer (this problem has seemed to resolve itself) but at the time I panicked and called what I thought to be the mcafee helpline from Google search (the first number that came up), but later found it to be something only posing as McAfee called 'GuruAid'. I spoke to a man who got me to put in a code on some sight so that he could remote control my computer. I don't know what he did exactly and it'll sound really vague, but he installed something weird that would apparently make my computer go faster as he said it was slow (I'd NEVER noticed this 'slowness' before..)and he showed me this chart with red crosses on it and he told me that these were viruses that my virus detector didn't pick up. He blamed Microsoft word not starting up properly in the past on viruses. I've never had a problem with word until he tampered with my computer. After he had done whatever he did with my computer, he tried to get me to pay ?399 for future protection and when I said I didn't have the money, he didn't seem to understand and started to pressure me saying things like, 'you're doing this at the risk of your computer's safety' and all that. He lowered it to ?62 and when I said I couldn't pay this (I'm currently a student) he eventually said that he would return the computer back to its normal state before he tampered with it... Our domain network (based off Windows 2k3 Server) is allowing multiple occurances of the same file to be opened at the same time (typically only with AutoCAD files). This is obviously a problem because the work one person does can easily be overwritten by another person working in the same file. Typically I've noticed that if a second occurance of the file is allowed, eventually the first occurance shows a warning and the file is changed to read-only.

The Win 2K3 Server is dynamically assigning our IP address. I have noticed that this seems to occur after a failure of the server to assign IP addresses (which has only occured twice in about a year), and also when the netgear wireless router we're using has one of it's moments and requires a power-cycle to reset it to working status. This morning we actually had a guy that was able to open the same AutoCAD file twice on his PC (he didn't realize he already had it open until after he'd chosen to open it again, at which point he questioned why it did not come up as read-only when he reopened it).

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

I was doing some trading on steam and I stupidly clicked a link that looked like a screenshot.  It downloaded a file, but I never opened or clicked the file.  I proceeded to get on my laptop and change pwords for my email and steam, and then (overkill mayeb?) I factory reset my pc.  Am I safe from the virus, and did I overkill with resetting my pc?  (all my items are still in my account)

I am having a goofy problem with .doc and .xls files. If I attempt to open them from either Windows Explorer or My computer, I get the "This file is already open" error but then you can then change the file and save it.
However, I can then execute the application and open the file from within the app, it works fine and doesn't give the error.
Any help would be appreciated. I have found traces of this error on the internet but have not found any satisfactory solutions to it. Thanks

When a user clicks on a link to a text-based file, what determines whether it opens in the browser window or prompts to open or save the file?

I have a web page that has links to many text files. All of the text files have the same extension (.cid) which is associated with TextPad on my PC. When I click on the link for some of the files, it opens the file directly in my browser window. When I click on the link for other files, it prompts to open or save the file. I can't figure out what is different about the files. They have the same extension and are both text files.

Is there some algorithm IE does to determine if the file can be opened in the browser? Is there some way to force one behavior or the other?

A:IE6 - What determines how a text file will be opened?

Hi superjess...welcome to TSF...

you should be able to change the behaviour by doing the following:

- In Explorer (not IE), click Tools then Folder Options then File Types
- Scroll down to 'TXT Text Document' and then click the advanced button
- Check the box titled 'Confirm open after download'
- Click OK then OK again
- Clear out your IE cache and try again..you should get the download box prompt

If it doesn't work, then the only thing I can suggest is to delete the file type entry and the corresponding registry entries and recreate it from scratch and that will fix it.

Post back if you need any more help :)

Hello there, Have tried to get an answer on this one from the Adobe Users Forum, but to no avail (no response).
My issue is this:
1. created a MS Word document with hyperlinks embedded in it (used relative links as the content was to be moved / copied to other locations) and then converted it to a PDF file. Links were to other files (MS Word docs and MS Excel spreadsheets for instance located on the same PC / drive / CD as the source PDF)
2. tested this PDF file with embedded links in an IE7 environment (XP and upwards) having first made sure that all the files were in the right spot - no troubles - all links work.
3. tested this PDF file with embedded links in an IE8 environment and it would not work. Keep getting 'invited' to allow the blocked content to be opened, which I do, but nothing happens.
4. So to try to sort out the issue, added the location as a trusted location within Adobe Reader (preferences, etc) - no change still not working in IE8.
5. Added the location as a trusted source in IE8 - no change still not working in IE8.
6. Changed the preferences in Adobe Reader to prevent the PDF opening in a browser - hooray! links work in both IE7 and IE8 - BUT WHY ???

I have built a large content management system that relies on these links within PDF documents working from within a browser environment (ease of navigation, etc).

So my question - is this an issue with the enhanced security feature of IE8, a separate issue to do with Adobe Rea... Read more

I am a novice when it comes to stuff like this, i have asked my techy friend what to do and he told me how foolish i was to open an .exe file without checking how trustworthy it was.

I downloaded an winace.exe file which did not setup the software

My computer was fine for a few days then my desktop settings went screwy, i turned off my computer and when i rebooted i couldn't get past my virus software (mcaffee) log in page. The rest of the desktop looked normal but i couldn't click on anything

I opened in safe mode and ran a virus scan but mcaffee didn't pick up anything. I deleted the bad .exe file. I got all of "my document" files off the computer on to my laptop which is fine.

I restarted my computer today and it booted up not in safe mode and now it seems to be working fine, however i am worried that there is still something lurking in my system, registry etc somewhere and i want to make sure that there is nothing left which will stuff up my computer further down the track.

What would you recommend?

p.s. using Windows XP Professional

I tried to delete a template in "My Templates) in "Word". It would not go the the recyle bin as a file was opened in another program.

I discovered that when I went Word I get Document 1.
I then click the Office Button.
Click on close and get a faded screen.
Click the Office Button again and the only options are:
Open
Open from Office Live
Save to Office Live

Is this the open file? If it is how do I delete it?

If not can anyone solve my problem?

A:Delete file opened in another program

You will need to completely close Word for you to be able to delete anything to do with Word. But to make sure it is gone, boot into Safe Mode (Getting into Windows Safe Mode - ignore the 'Not able to boot into Windows', that is not your case. Go to the section below the first picture. That is how to boot into safe mode.) and then delete your file (Don't open Word at all).

What I've found so far is how to check if the file has been accessed or modified.

For example:
1.) To check if a file has been accessed is by going here %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows
2.) To check if a file has been modified is by going in the advanced search window, just set the location to search, and set it to search for ?Date modified.?

I'm sure there are more ways to check these files... But I haven't found a way to check how long that a file has been opened or accessed for. Because length of the time of the file being used (file opened to file closed) is also important in some cases. It would be greatly appreciated to know how. Let me know thanks

A:Can you check how long a file has been opened?

This is the kind of problem that has probably been addressed before in Techguy, but I don't know how to search it out:

I received some files on CD from my cousin (letters, photos). Well, he owns a MAC and apparently you can give files names with quotes on 'em in a Mac, but a quote is a forbidden character in Windows to be in a file name. Therefore, when I mount his CD I can see the file name, but I wish to copy it to my hard drive and my hard drive will not accept it.

I can ask my cuz to re-do the CD, except by this time he prob'ly has lost track of exactly what he sent me. I can post it back to him and have him go file by file through the bad names and change the quotes to dashes or apostrophes but then he could space it out and I'll never get the disk back.

So, is there anything I can do here and now to get the files from CD to hard disk?

Thanks for ANY ideas!

My first post in SevenForums. Any guidance on where to post things, etc. appreciated! I did look for a forum on file system issues, then looked over all forums, then decided to post here.

I have a file containing sensitive info that I use daily. It's encrypted with Windows EFS, showing as green in Explorer.

My objective is to be able to use this file from multiple logins on the same computer.

The file was not stored on the system drive in a Users subfolder, but on a separate logical drive (same physical drive), under a folder named "xxx" that I use, for many purposes, as a substitute for the corresponding Users subfolder on the system drive (since it's basically user data rather than system or application data). Usage of this encrypted file has been trouble-free until today.

I've been using an elevated privilege login "xxx" for all my computing work. I recently decided to create a second login "yyy" for use in daily work. I intend to use the new "yyy" login with restricted privileges, but for now both logins are admins until I get comfortable using the new login.

After creating "yyy" while logged in as "xxx", I copied most of the contents of the "xxx" profile to the new user's profile directory. (As I'm typing this, Radar is suggesting my problem might be here - a brute-force workaround for the eternally-greyed-out "Copy to" feature in Windows 7 profile manager.)

While logged in as "xxx... Read more

A:lost an excel file opened from IE

Depending on what e-mail software you are using, your e-mail program may have put the attachment in a temporary directory for it to be opened in Excel. Unless you did a "Save as" to a different location Excel would have done saves to that same temporary location. It sounds like your security settings may have been set to clear the temporary location when exiting Windows or the mail software. I am not familiar with the default mail program that come with Vista.

Welcome to TSG.

You can download the evaluation version of WinZip here: http://www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm Just click on the .exe file that downloads and it will install WinZip for you. I suggest setting it to open with the wizard interface. After 30 days it tells you your evaluation period has expired but it will work forever.

The drive/driver thing is muddled. Exactly what are you loading drivers for and what drive are you trying to remove – and why?

When ever I do a full registry backup and then "Edit" with Metapad (text editor), I get this alert ...
Metapad 3.6 (not LE) version

Metapad has always been OK for small "reads" of keys, but it has always irritated me when I want to look at the full registry list in REG file. Searching REG is much faster in text format, but if ANSI characters are lost the reg file is then worthless..
I have an automatic Ctrl+S reflex ...

MS Notepad does not falter. But it is too clunky, I think it is pre 1995 since MS even looked at Notepad.

Can you recommend another text editor (or Registry editor) that I can use.

I dont see anywhere that the file is really opened in another program. what's causing this problem, and how can I delete these PDF files?

Most likely you opened the pdf with reader - when you close reader it does not really close and retains the pdf files..

If you open task manager you will see that reader is still a running process - even though it is closed..

All the metro apps seem to do the same thing - you close and the process stays open.

Hey! I have a virus. I had what I thought was a screenshot from skype through a friend. It was a .scr instead though. I was suspiscious of clicking it in the first place because we hardly ever talk on skype. But, for some reason I did the really dumb thing and clicked it. Pretty instantly I knew it was a virus since it loaded but didn't open anything. I close the programs I have open and then receive a text from coinbase. I never use coinebase. I made an account there a while back but never did anything with it. I was basically just curious what it was about and then left it alone.

This kind of freaked me out and I wondered what other information it could have. So I called my bank to cancel my card and send me a new one just to be safe. A user received an email from an unknown source and promptly clicked on the Word .doc attachment.  AVG is installed, but it didn't flag anything.  We've scanned the computer using AVG, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and MBAR.  We are going to decomission the machine just to be on the safe side, but wanted to post here to see if you kind folks could provide some steps to determine if the decomissioned machine is in fact infected.  The computer is used in HR and accesses a lot of banking sites as well as highly sensitive info.  We want to be on the safe side.

This post explains the exact issue we encountered, but unfortunately we haven't found any definitive steps for resolution or even how to determine if the machine is actually infected:

Hi, currently doing prep work prior to running Hijack as instructed via quietman on another thread.I wanted to run SuperAntispy & Mbam one more time before updating. Have done follwoing so far:1.Cleaned temp internet files & temp files2.run Adware3.run Spybot4. Tried to download Housecall & Panda AV products but sites were unavailable? Tried to install BitDefender but installation wouldn't complete successfully!Reverted to reinstalling AVG 7.5 Internet Security (my original Av product - previously I did not install the AVG firewall & relied on the Windows Firewall haha!). Updated signature files and install AVG Firewall as well this time as a replacement for Windows Firewall. (This piece is slightly out of sequence of the prep instructions and I wonder if this is where my problems have come from?)Had a number of error messages - one related to Teatime and couldn't download AVG8.0 update successfully. Called AVG here in the UK. They advised removing Mbam, SAS & spybot as some of the functionality of each was incorporated in AVG!!! mmmm not sure about this as whilst there may be overlap, they all appear to identify some different threats! Hi seven forum,
I have a couple of drives to scarf data from and bought a iomagic enclosure last week.
I have used autorun in my xp lenovo it engaged and grabbed the 8g fine.
The newer drive, from a lap with xp shows only a text file "ImageIt4Err" that when opened shows 1 line
only as follows,, "CreateFile(),File:.\it41.cpp,Line:601"
I have properties listed as significant, but this is the only thing read! any thoughts appreciated.

A:enclosure shows only a lone file when opened

Hi buginmyear,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Looks like I have a buginmyeyes and additionally a buginmybrains.

You copied 8GB of data to drive 1 in your enclosure from PC 1.

Now when you connect that drive 1 in your enclosure to PC 2, you see only some nonsensical file instead of that sensical 8GB of data copied.

Is that what you mean?

Hey Everybody, so here is my scenario, I have a Windows 7 (enterprise) Evaluation disk that I am using to learn WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit.) I have copied the Install.wim file from the Windows 7 evaluation disk and into a folder on my machine running WAIK. I have full access to that folder and subdirectories but here is my problem. I Open Windows System Image Manager, right click "Select a Windows Image or catalog file" and select my install.wim file. When I do I am prompted with a message

"The catalog file for Windows image Windows 7 ENTERPRISE cannot be opened for the following reason: Cannot find the catalog file associated with the Windows image Windows 7 ENTERPRISE. -You must have a valid catalog file to continue. Do you want to create a catalog file?

If I say yes, it gores through the process of mounting the windows image, then it sensentized the data, then unmounted the windows image, then I get the error: Windows SIM was unable to generate a catalog file.

Here is a copy of the log generated:

When creating a catalog file, you must create it on the same architecture machine, for instance if you're trying to create a Win7 x64 catalog, you have to be running Windows SIM on a x64 machine, same for x86.

It began a couple of weeks ago with some reckless downloading of various sound editing software. All of them sucked, so I uninstalled all of them and was careful not to get suckered into downloading extra stuff (i.e. toolbars). I ended up contracting the dlinksearch virus anyway, which redirected my links to the dlinksearch webpage. I ran mbam, adwCleaner, and Hitman Pro as suggested by this site. For a while, I didn't get my links redirected until yesterday when a link went to dlinksearch. I ran mbam again, got nothing. I used Junkware Removal Tool this time too, because I ended up leaving it out last time since Norton 360 didn't have any info on it. At that time, a couple of my taskbar shortcuts were blank pages instead of their icons and they didn't work. I thought it was an .exe file corruption or something, but weirdly enough they were working again, though still missing their usual icons. I followed the instructions as directed by here anyway and restarted the computer. But the computer didn't go to the startup screen, it instead said something about NFTS(sp?) and began scanning all the files and restoring them to default or something. I let it go on for about an hour, then when I get to my admin account (which is the only account on the laptop), a window opens labeled "Desktop Gadgets" and says "Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and the click Retry, or click Cancel to exit." It appears as sidebar.exe under processes. All the shortcu... Read more

Sounds like registry corruption. You may have a rootkit Trojan, but I'm not certain.

Have you ever created a restore point before, or do you know for certain if any restore points have ever been made?

Yes plus cache, pagefile, FSB, etc.

Might help if we had some more info on the type of files and your system specs.

I have arranged my file icons in "My Documents" folder in a particular way that is good for me. My arrangement has a different number of files on each row. When I open an Excel 2000 file by double clicking the icon, the icon moves to a different location in the folder. It seems to move to the next available space in the grid. When I close the file, the icon moves again, not back where it was, but to the highest available grid space. Opening a Word 2000 file seems to work OK. The icon doesn't move. I have tried this on XP machines with newer Excel and the icon doesn't move. Is this something unique to Windows 2000 or Excel 2000 or do I have some other problem?

I have a shared folder that i mapped so 2 computers can share the files. Both computers have access 2007 installed.

What i want to do is have them able to open the same access file and have it update while they both have it open?

A:same access file opened on 2 computers to update while open on both

Man it has been a long time since I messed with access, but I do recall a method where it actually duplicates the file allows the changes from two sources, then sync's them back into a single file.

Anyhow what you want is possible if not exactly the way you are looking to do it. I'm sorry I haven't had my coffee yet and as I said it's been awhile.

I downloaded a file that was a supposed crack of a program, and it was not. I double clicked to open it, and the file disappeared. Since then there are four programs that I believe to be viruses that will show up every now and then under processes in Windows Task Manager, and I'll end them when they come back. The processes that have appeared since I opened the file are:
aw1.exe
apyqya.exe
fvufxggtssd.exe
verclsid.exe

I found the first one listed as malware I believe, and it took up a very large amount of ram. The second and third were nowhere to be found with a Google search. The fourth one I am pretty sure prevented me from clicking anything on the task bar, because once I ended it I could click the task bar again. Also, my inability to click the task bar began when a pop-up window appeared in the lower right hand corner, along with an icon that I do not think I have seen on my computer before. This a picture of the pop-up, along with the icon circled in red:

The pop-up went away after a while of clicking on other windows I believe, and the icon went away when I canceled the fourth process. All of the above processes have reappeared a few times since the original file was opened. I have started the steps in the forum about posting logs, but GMER is still running after I started it three hours ago. I was wondering if anyone had advice about this situation without the files requested in the forum instructions

A:Virus processes appeared after I opened a file I downloaded

All right, GMER finished so I can post the logs now

Hello Windows 7 Expert,

I have my Taskbar set at Never Combine

However, currently when I open a new file in Windows 7 it still groups files somewhat. Let me explain.

Suppose I open a Word File, then an Excel File and then a Word file. Instead of the files appearing in that order on the Taskbar, Windows 7 will place the last Word File in the second position (Adjacent to the first Word file) instead of to the right most position (last / third position).

I really dislike this behavior because if I have multiple different files open and then I open another file I often have to look for its position in the taskbar instead of just looking to the right position which is much more efficient. I would much rather Windows 7 behave like Windows XP where every new file on the taskbar is placed in the right most position.

Can this be achieved in Windows 7?

Thank you.

In windows 7 there was this feature I loved when you needed to open a file in a program via standard "File -> Open" dialog and if you had the folder with that file already opened in windows exlorer then you would just click that explorer window and your Open File dialog window would instantly display that folder.Afer upgrading to win8 i lost this function and really want it back.just a detailed process because I know it's hard to understand if you never experienced it:1) You have pressed File->Open in some program and Open File Dialog showing you some random folder.2) You have Target_Folder opened in windows explorer3) You click on the windows explorer window4) Open File Dialog automatically switches to that folder and you can just pick your file there without navigating for 2 minutes.

A:How to make Open File Dialog to show the folder opened in explorer

I don't think that what you are describing is a feature of Windows 7. I cannot duplicate it on any of my Windows 7 machines or VMs.1. I had a Windows Explorer Window open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET2. I used notepad and used File->Open. The Open File Dialog started in my Documents folder.3. Clicking the existing Explorer Window that was open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET did not change the Open File Dialog to point at that location.I tried a few different programs (Wordpad, notepad, Paint, and Microsoft Word) and I wasn't able to get the behaviour you described. The feature may have been coming from an add-on program of some sort, or may be specific to programs that you use (and those programs may not support the feature in win8+).

Hi!!! Another problem! I was innocently chatting using Windows Live Messenger, when I recieved an invitation to accept a file called 'photos.zip', from one of my contacts. I stupidly extracted it and double-clicked on some sort of anonymous file, I think it was called 'webcam_photos_2007_screensaver' or something along those line...

Anyway, at random times, the worm opens up all my online contacts and attempts to send them the 'photos.zip' file, along with a message saying something like 'these are my holiday pictures', and lot of other things.

I have deleted everything to do with photos.zip, and run my AVG virus scanner, where it picks up trojans ( but I believe that is something to do with WinFixer and the WinAntiVirusPro2007 business, which I am currently sorting out). I have run Spybot, McAfee Stinger, but nothing.

A:one email looks opened when i ahve not opened it?

It sounds like you are using IMAP, which syncs the emails with the server, not the devices. So when one device shows up and is read there, the other will then show the same thing (being read). This is normal.

Just a few days ago I noticed a strange problem. I was downloading a program with Firefox (latest version) and the download dialogue froze up when I opted to save the file. I thought Firefox was being buggy, so I closed it and reopened, but the problem persisted. My next step was to reboot. No luck. I ran a full virus scan with Norton, and downloaded AdAware to see if spyware could be causing a problem. I was clean. I later found that if I just wait a really long time, the dialogue box to choose the file's location eventually comes up. After this, the problem seems to be gone until I reboot. In other words, once I wait forever for the box to pop up, the next time I download something it pops up instantly like it should. I unfortunately noticed that this problem wasn't unique to firefox. I clicked to add a file to my Winamp playlist, and the same thing happened. Winamp froze and a few minutes later the Open File box popped up and everything was fine. It also happened with AIM when I tried to send a file to a friend. This problem was very annoying to google because the combination of words describing the problem comes up with irrelavent hits. I'm very computer literate but this problem confounds me. I'd appreciate any help or insight. Hijack This log available upon request.
EDIT: I'm running WINXP SP2 fully updated to my knowledge, and my computer specs are listed.

Hi there:

That's actually just a temporary file that Word automatically creates. It's nothing to be concerned about! There's a great post here that explains what it's all about (I won't bother regurgitating it):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211632

Hope that helps! Have a great day.

Hello,

I opened a email on my msn on Monday and I started to download the file when I realized something was wrong and it wouldn't let me cancel so I turned the computer off in hopes that it would stop it. Starting Wednesday I get pop-ups through out the day that read, at the top "winntr1" and then below "the specified file can not be opened". Today I have started getting a similar pop-up that won't stop that says, at the top "winntr1" and then below "Not enough storage space is available to complete this operation". I found this site by googling my issue and found a similar thread, Infected email ('fotos 27/06'), apparent trojan, bulk resending of itself to contacts, from August 1st. I read the advise and followed along and now I need more help.

I'm using windows XP and in network connections I accidently deleted my lan connection icon. (I know that sounds goofy) Then the recycle bin got emptied before I could restore it Since I am using DSL I obviously need this, but it will not even detect the hardware to make a new connection. I've spent hours trying to figure this out, and read everything about LAN in the microsoft help and support.
please help!

I accidentally downloaded the incorrect student version from Digital River. I meant to go with the 64 bit but installed the 32 bit. I'd already done the install before I realized my error. I contacted Digital River and they are refunding my money for the 32 bit purchase. I have since purchased the 64 bit version but can't figure out how to install it. I'm getting an error message when I try to do the install. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm pretty confused right now.

What error message are you getting? And at what point are you getting it?

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

UPDATE: A friend referred me to "recuva" yoake a recovery, of about 15 files(MSWord), I got back 2 and one was my buff(buffalo coin) logs. However later I discovered;both files will not open. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? Any chance of recovery nof these 4 and others.?

A:'shift-del' by accident

there are quite a lot of recovery programs available

I have used www.z-a-recovery.com a digital camera free recovery on the site and recovered 100 images off a CF card , so i know some of these work well

From a Elvandil Post
Here's a list. If the free ones don't see anything, forget the pay ones. I know Pandora is still around and has updated recovery software. And the other day, someone used the Disk Investigator at the bottom, which is meant to show you how much stuff is still on your drive after you thought you cleaned it, and they managed to get all their files back. Dr. Freeware is pretty new and updated not too long ago, with other useful tools, too.

Here's the list, anyway (I have more if you run out ):

Free recovery applications:

Dr. Freeware Boot CD (also has partition tool, drive cloner and imager)
DiskDigger & NTFSWalker
Pandora Recovery (Free for personal use)
Smart Data Recovery
Recover Files
Roadkil's Undelete
Recuva
Restoration
Free Undelete (NTFS only)
Softperfect File Recovery
ADRC Data Recovery Tools
Undelete Plus
Data Recovery
PCI File Recovery
DriveRescue
Ultimate Data Recovery
Disk Investigator

Commercial:

O&O Disk Recovery
Paragon Mount Everything (Mounts any file system, CD/DVD burning, File Manager, Partitioner)
GetDataBack (For FAT or NTFS)
Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro
File Scavenger
Recover My Files

a few days ago, I went to the "safely remove hardware" icon and clicked "stop" on the USB Port option.

Today, when I tried to get photos onto my comp by inserting the memory chip into the SD/mini/MMC/RS and the computer wouldn't reconize it. I went to my computer and checked to see if the icons, and none were there.

I tried restarting my comp, but that didn't help.

How do I retrieve the hardware?

A:[SOLVED] Accident

Remove the SD/mini/MMC/RS docking bay and the reinsert it into your PC, this is assuming that the device you inserted the memory chip into is connected through USB.

General Info

Windows 8 pro
Laptop
Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Thank you,
Alex

Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,
Lucy

Hello-I have a windows xp (version 2002) Asus EeePC and I think I might have downloaded a virus accidentally whilst on a music radio website. I found that it messed up my internet browser and it would directly open to a website called "partner12.mydomainadvisor.com" Please advise what I should do to clean this up! I have changed the default from the wierd website to "google.com" but it still will default to this website "partner12..." if the domain name does not exist. i used to have norton antivirus but the subscription ran out and i did not renew...I know I should probably get something to protect my computer as well from now on. Thank you
