Hi @Damurphy15,  Thank you for your query.  I understand that you would like to disable the touchpad or clickpad. What is your precise model of HP notebook? HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number? What operating system are you running?  Here is a link to HP Notebook PCs - Using the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 10) that should help. Please note the section on "Opening the Touchpad properties". You will notice the option Touchpad disable. This may not be for your operating system but it should guide you to the correct location to find this option. Please let me know how if this helped. Please let me know if this information helps you resolve the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution", this will help others easily find the information they may be looking for. My Acer Aspire laptop running Vista Basic wont completely shut down.
The screen turns off but the computer continues to run and some time
later the screen starts up at the log on page. The only way to power off
is to remove the battery.

I dont know if the problem is related but my keyboard and touchpad have
become touchy as I now have to double strike some keys to type a letter
and the cursor doesnt move smoothly. I thought it may be the drivers but
when I start in Safe mode I dont have a problem.

I am now using an external keyboard but would appreciate some advice

Sup Guys,

I know there has been a lot of posts about this subject but I can't seem to find a solution. I have a HP Pavilion zu5120us Notebook PC. I was on the internet last night and fell asleep. Computer was working fine. I woke up 4 hours later to find my Computer Off. I tried to turn back on, and as many people have experienced, It won't turn on. I took the case off of the Fans (It has 2 separate parts of the bottom case to remove, you probably already knew this) and I sprayed some compressed air inside to blow out all the dust. I took everything I could off, which was only the battery and the Hardrive. Unplugged it, let it sit for about 15 mins. Then I put it all together and go to turn it on. Same thing. So I take the battery out wait a few seconds and put it back in. This time I hold the laptop to my ear when I attempt to turn it on. A fan turns on inside or something that sounds like it but it's not the 2 big fans right next to where I plug in the Power Chord. From my experience taking Xbox's apart I know that there is a small fan on the CPU maybe or something that turns on whenever there is a current going through the xbox. so I'm thinking thats the fan maybe. Not very Laptop Smart. Anyways No light indicators come on that say I have power or even that my Power Chord is plugged in but yet I can hear that fan inside the laptop. I hope that someone knows what I can do. I'm pretty much limited to what I have right ... Read more

A:Computer Won't Turn On *Laptop*

Well all I can think of is that the AC adaptor died while you were asleep, the laptop ran on the battery until it drained. So now you have a dead adaptor and a very low battery. Is there any local PC shop (not likely I know) where you could have the adaptor checked or replaced? Do you have access to a voltmeter? If yes check the output of the adaptor (across center pin and outside metal end) Does anyone else with you have the same HP, you can temporarily use that battery to check Laptop health/working condition.

Cheers.

Normally there is a button on your laptop keyboard to turn it off. And if there is, a drawing of a touchpad is going to be on that key.
Such as FN + Y or SHIFT + 6.

At some point in the past couple of weeks I did disk clean up and a defrag of my computer. On the same  day windows did an update. Ever since then my Touchpad has been on and I can't uninstall the drivers. When it does I get message in red saying I can't. I have an Inspiron 17 7737 with windows ten. Help.

A:Touchpad won't turn off

Try pressing FN and F3 together and see if that disables the touch pad.  If there is a touch pad icon on the right of the task bar right click it and choose touch pad properties.  There may be a green button that you can use to turn off the touch pad.
From your post you mentioned that you have tried reinstalling the drivers themselves, but if not you can download the windows 10 touch pad drivers here.
If the problem continues you may want to try system restore to a restore point saved before the problem.  here is more information on system restore.
Please let me know if the problem continues.

Occasionally (Maybe every other day or so) my laptop will completely shut off and die. I'm assuming because it'll get overheated occasionally. Could there be anything else wrong with it though?

And the other computer. That ones be so messed up by my dad that I've got no idea what we can do with it other than trash it and get a new one. The machine freezes up completely and there's almost nothing we can do to unfreeze it short of unplugging it. It restarts on its own too. Is there anyway to fix it?

A:Laptop And Other Computer Turn Off At Random Times

Overheating could cause these problems. You can try cleaning inside the case of the computer.Cleaning the Interior of your PCCleaning inside the laptop is more difficult but you could try blowing out all the vents with compressed air.You could also have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes/shutdowns, which might give us some clues to the problems. How To Use the Event Viewer

I bought a E520. I am not liking the touchpad on this thing. It hangs up and does not respond a lot of times. The biggest thing that irks me is that my screen will zoom in and out when I run my finger along the touchpad or when tapping it. I know you can use the "pinch" with two fingers to zoom in and out but mine will zoom with just a tap of one finger. Someone must know how to disable the zoom feature. Can you describe in detail to me how to do that? I called Lenovo support about it and the guy said it might be a software or hardware problem and told me to take it into a repair facility. There must be a way in settings to turn that off. I just want the touchpad to work normally, as in move the cursor around.. thats it, nothing more. Can someone help me with this??

I would like to know how to quickly and temporarily disable and re-enable my Synaptics touchpad. I should be up to date with drivers and OS updates since I use the HP support assistant in addition to WIndows 10 updates. My older i5 HP Pavilion laptop (12.1") has a feature to tap on a dot on the touchpad to do this, and a light comes on to indicate it is disabled. Another tap or two and it is re-enabled. This is not a feature on my larger (this one) laptop. I don't see any setting in the Synaptics driver to have a quick way to do this. Just to be clear, I am not looking for a way to enable/disable the touchpad when using an external mouse. I've tried 3rd party software to create a delay on the touchpad when I'm tyoing but it does not work well for me (Laptop Assistant). I know some Synaptics drivers do have a spot you can set up on the corner of the touchpad to do what I want but it's not apparently available on the Windows 10 driver. Hopefully someone here has found a solution and can share it here. Thanks!!!Donald

A:Turn on/off touchpad with hotkey for Dell XPS 13 (XPS L322X)

I have a Dell XPS 13 and this has bugged me for a year. I've finally fixed it though, via a registry command line:
To turn the trackpad off, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
To turn the trackpad on, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Note that turning the trackpad off shows a slight delay in it taking effect.
To automate these commands, save each command to a batch file, e.g. turnoff.bat, turnon.bat, then you can run them from either the windows run command (Window key + start typing path to the bat file) or via a short-cut app, like slickrun.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

Hi,
My laptop froze in standby and after reboot touchpad and buttons do not work.
I have tried a restore point and also disableing the device rebooting and finding new hardware none of which has worked. I have noticed that during the boot process there is a point that it works briefly then stops. Device manager says working fine and it is definatly not a settings issue within Synaptic Device. So i guess it is a softwre problem but am now completely flummoxed.
I can get by with a usb mouse but I do not find this very practical as i use it mobile a lot.
Pease Help.

A:Laptop Touchpad.

i would download the driver for that device off the manufacturers website

gointo device manager and remove it - reboot, let windows find new hardware and re-install the driver for it

Hi, i have got two Advent 8111 laptops and they are running fine apart from one small problem with one of the laptops.

The touchpad wasnt very good when i bought the laptops, and was originally installed as Standard pointing device on PS/2 Port 3.
I then installed the latest synaptics drivers on both laptops, but only one of them works properly.

I can change different settings on one, and can use the vertical scrolling, but on the other i cant change anything or do the vertical scrolling.

After installing the latest drivers, one of the touchpads is detected as Synaptics TouchPad V6.2 (the one with scrolling working), and the other is still Standard Pointing Device (the one that doesnt work).

Here are some pics to explain what is happening.

The first laptop where the scrolling and the drivers are working,

The second laptop where the scrolling isnt working.

In the device manager the touchpad is now coming up as Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device, and when i go to 'mouse properties' on the 'buttons' tab under devices it says Synaptics TouchPad V6.2 on PS/2 Port 3, and also it says the same on the 'Device Settings' tab.

Then i did the same thing on the second laptop using the same drivers, but this time i get the little icon on the tray, but still cant use the vertical scrolling feature.
In the device manager the mouse is listed the same as on the first laptop, Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device.
But when i go into 'mouse proper... Read more

A:Laptop TouchPad Help

First suggestion (maybe not too helpful!) If it is within the guarantee period, get it back to the shop quickish.
Otherwise, try the usual. Uninstall the driver. Go into the Control panel/device manage. Right click the touchpad and select properties. Update the driver (Allow the option to search on the web for the latest drivers) I don't hold out much hope for this working as it does appear that you may have a flakey chip problem there.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17r SE Laptop and my problem is that every single time, I have to turn my Laptop ON twice in order for it to boot up successfully. The first time I turn it on, Dell logo appears for a second and then, black screen shows up. Then, I have to turn my laptop off and start it back again. Second time, it boots up without any problem. I am fed up of turning it on twice everytime, and also concerned that it will affect health of my Laptop . How can I fix this Issue, please help.
I don't have a Recovery CD or Windows 8 CD. Windows 8 was pre-installed on my Laptop.

I recently purchased an HP Spectre Notebook. I am a graphic designer and decided to try something other than a Macbook (which I've used for the past 9 years). So far I love the Spectre, but my only beef is the touchpad compared to the Macbook. I can't seem to find any additional settings to change the following (and maybe it's not possible, please let me know if it's not and maybe some suggestions for an external trackpad that works this sort of magic!): 1. Reverse scrolling. (honestly... who the heck scrolls that way?) Since this apparently doesn't have a precision pad, it's not an option to change in settings... at least that I can find.2. Move around (mainly in Illustrator) freely with just dragging 2 fingers around the pad (anyone that's designed in Illustrator on a Macbook will understand) That's really it. Maybe it's a "precision touchpad" I should be looking for. I just assumed something at this price and awesomeness would have come with an equally awesome touchpad.

Hi everybody.
This is my first post here.
I stumbled across this board while looking for help with my vaio.
I have TX770P/R. I love it even more than my previous laptops all sony by the way.
Kind of an obsession, my wife would say.
When at home I have it plugged in port replicator with external mouse, keyboard and monitor.
I got tired of using mouse after trying 3 different models so I made external PS/2 touchpad from old laptop and that's where I have a problem.
Touchpad works, but slow and without all the features I am used to.
It is recognized by OS (XP PRO) as HID-compliant mouse and will only use microsoft driver.(DV 5.1.2600.0)
For my laptops touch pad driver is provided by Alps (DV 5.3.512.4)
Is there any way to update the driver for external touch pad and get all pointer options, like speed and functions like scroll?
Thanks in advance for help.
Rob

A:Help with external touchpad on laptop

Both touch pads are Alps, just different models.
I tried drivers from all over the web.
I also tried a driver which was in original laptop.
Whatever I did, it was only affecting the internal pad.
Is the problem hardware or software related? Is it because both pads are attached to PS/2?

I've acquired (another) new computer, a Toshiba Satellite C655D running Windows 7. It is a laptop.

I am unfamiliar with the nature of a laptop touchpad because I have been a dedicated desktop user for 16 years.

This touchpad will sometimes open links when i'm scrolling by them, always wants to expand and open things when I scroll by them, will want to move them when i'm hovering over them.

The only things I want my touchpad to do are: move the cursor and click things when I want to click on them, and only move and expand things when I have one of the two buttons down - you know, like an actual mouse?

Is there a way to change this behavior?

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with my laptop touchpad. The left click button and double tapping the touchpad won't work, but the right click button will. I can also still scroll with it and hover over icons. I've tried everything most people have recommended, which includes system restore, driver un/re-install, mouse settings, touchpad settings - nothing has worked, and the weird thing is it was working fine the other day. A USB mouse also works perfectly fine.

The problem sounds pretty much identical to this closed thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/957019-touch-pad-touch-pad-wont-2.html

Any help other than what I've already mentioned would be good, keeping in mind the right click works, but the left click and touchpad clicks won't!

Thank you,

Hello and welcome to TSG!!

When you press the left button, can you hear/feel anything? Is there a tactile response of any kind? It may be that the button has gone bad, mechanically. As to why that would affect the double-tapping, though, I'm not sure. Often there is a setting that allows the tapping option. Can you still single-tap and select an object?

On my laptop i have a touchpad and it has the three buttons right click, left lick and a small suare one in the middle to move the page down, up, left, right. Just recently I have noticed this doesn't work (The middle square only) instead of moving the page, if I am hovering over a link it clicks it. It seems to me that this middle button is acting like a left click aswell.

How can i fix this. Thanks for your help guys and I know these forums wont let me down. (REP will be given out)

A:Problems with laptop touchpad.

Go to "mouse" in control panel. Go through the tabs until you find a tab like this.

You can then make the buttons do whatever you would like. Just click the correct device (if you have more than one. Press "settings" and you should see some options.

If you don't have the option to do this, search for newer drivers for your device.

When you click "settings" you may see something like this. This is where you will change settings for the buttons. Hope this helps.

Laptop is an advent 4401.

So, I've got problems with my touchpad, in as much as it doesn't work. To make it work I have to go into the device manager and uninstall the 'Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device', then restart and it works fine. Only problem is Windows automatically detects it when you restart and the next time you restart it finishes the installation and then the touchpad doesn't work again.

I can't disable, only uninstall. I can disable it through the mouse options in Control Panel but that doesn't make any difference. I've tried using updated synaptic touchpad drivers and none at all (just the generic one's Windows installs), even did a fresh install of XP (I'm giving it to my dad anyway), but that didn't make any difference either.

The BIOS is pretty limited and there is nothing resembling legacy USB support so I can't turn that off.

I also found two files under Driver Details through Device manager; C:..WINDOWS..system32..drivers..i8042prt.sys and C:..WINDOWS..system32..drivers..mouclass.sys, deleted both of those files (just to see if it would make any difference), but it didn't do anything. As soon as you restart it doesn't work again.

I'm getting around it at the moment by disabling the plug and play service, but that's not a fix (my dad will be mainly using it for watching movies and tv on the go, so needs the plug and play functionality for external devices).

Hi,

If I go to the Mouse Properties box, the Tapping box is unticked which should mean that this feature is disabled. Anyone know how I can turn this off?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that has a vertical and horizontal scrolling option on the touch pad. It worked fine when I got the laptop but now the scrolling doesn't work. The touchpad works, just won't scroll. I must have accidentally changed the settings or something. I've read other postings and tried to go through the control panel but there is no option for a touchpad in my control panel and I can't find anything under mouse properties that I can change to fix this. Also, my keyboard now jumps all over the place. In the middle of typing my cursor jumps to another sentence and starts putting in my letters, how is that happening? That just started, it wasn't doing that before. I've looked through downloads thinking I needed a new driver but you can't tell what is what so who knows what to download! If anyone could help me, please email me at [email protected] as I can't always find this forum. Thanks for your help!

I LOVE CSI....except NY.

I have an HP laptop with scroll on the touchpad.

When I go to "Mouse" in Control Panel I see Touchpad functions and an "ALPS" logo. I assume that is because of the touchpad software installed. Perhaps you have somehow uninstalled or corrupted your Touchpad software???

As far as the cursor jumping goes...I also had that problem. It was caused by the BASE of my THUMBS touching the touchpad while I typed. I'm more careful about that now, AND I turned DOWN the sensitivity of the Pad. Hope this helps.

Touchpad was fine until today where in most windows when i try to scroll the pointer will either jump towards the top left part of the screen, or scroll then when i touch the pad again then it will jump.

Its not the case for all windows. Firefox works normal, same with device manager. But for chrome, normal folder windows and control panel it always does this. The further away the pointer is already from the top left of the screen the futher it will jump.

Im using Vista 32bit SP2, on an acer 6935g. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad driver. I have been messing a bit with my laptop today, just reinstalling gpu driver, changing dpi settings and trying to work out why some games aren't as running as good as they should. But nothing that should of affected the touchpad and i've scanned my laptop with a few scanners and nothings come up.

Any ideas? thanks

Hi!

I have a problem with my touchpad on my VAIO laptop. I can't get it to work (tried almost everything). So I decided to low-format my HDD with diskpart's clean all command - and I did. When I then rebooted the laptop with the Windows 7 DVD in the optical drive and the DVD loaded - at the first screen, when the mouse/touchpade pointer shows itself the touchpad was working for about two seconds (I was able to move the pointer!). But then it stopped again. It's like something (really don't know what because the whole HDD is low-formatted using Diskpart's Clean all command) disabled the touchpad after the two seconds. Maybe this could be a hind: when I firsto got my brand new VAIO I disabled the touchpad after a few days and then later one quick-formated the HDD when installing an other version of Windows 7 x64 (not the preinstalled one). I tought that maybe it's possible that the "disabled touchpad setting" got saved on some hidden place (hidden partition?) so I low-formated it now to get to the bottom of this mystery. But it's still not working. At least I know that it's not a hardware problem. Does anyone know what could it be and how could I re-enable it again?

Thank you!

A:Touchpad problem on my laptop

Hello Bellzemos and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'd suggest trying to restore your Vaio to factory configuration. If you have the ASSIST button:
1. Press that button while your computer is off. That will start the Vaio Care Rescue program.
2. Click on Start Recovery Wizard > Tools > Start advanced recovery wizard.
3. Follow on screen instructions.

If your computer does not have the ASSIST button:
1. Turn on the computer and immediately start clicking the F10 key several times before the Vaio logo screen disappears.
2. When the Edit Boot Options screen is displayed click the Enter key.
3. Follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Ok, as some of you know, I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I've been playing with it for the last couple of days, and I think that while the touchpad thing is nice for some things, I'd really like to get a mouse. I've been thinking about getting one of the cheaper ones, since I'll be moving around with this thing a lot, it probably won't be used all of time (in other words, it might become a hassle to get the mouse out of the bag everytime I'm in a new place.)

After playing with it I have two questions...
1. Can you use the mouse and the touchpad simultaneously? Like if I have the mouse hooked up, can I use it to scroll up and down and then use the touchpad to scroll side to side?

2. What kind of mouse is recommended...there are so many choices and variations that I don't know where to start, or even if half of them will work on a Mac. Should I get a wireless mouse? Or a corded mouse? and has anyone had much experience with the retractable cord mice?

not sure if this is the right place to ask.
Just had found a thread were similar, but different problems were discussed.
Laptop KBD and Touchpad  + USB KBD dead - but USB mouse OK
WIn7 home premium SP1
Devicemanager shows yellow triangle mark at:
- Synaptics PS/2 Por tTouchpad
- HID Keyboard (my ext. USB-KBD)
- StandardKBD (PS/2)  - seems to be the internal KBD
I tried a reinstall of drivers from backup partition  - :-((
KBD seems not physically dead - on boot screen it works,
but not on login screen any more

I really do not  want to do a full reset/restore and reinstall everything ...

so all help very welcome

I upgraded to Windows 10 and the touchpad worked at first, but now has stopped completely. There is no light on, but the system diagnostics and device manager say it is working. Have checked that is not coinflicting with external mouse and the driver is up to date. Help!Mark

A:Pavillion 13 laptop touchpad not working

I uninstalled the driver and restarted the computer, this made the system re-install the driver (19.2.4) and now works!!! The wonders of technology.

Hi,Last night my keyboard and touchpad stopped working on my laptop and now I'm using the usb mouse and the "On screen keyboard". I have done a system restore but to no avail. I've also taken out the battery (found in another thread) but nothing. In device manager there is an exclamation mark next these:1. Under keyboard. keyboard device filter2. Under mouse and other pointing devices. ELAN PS/2 port smart padDouble clicking both of them gets these properties for each respectively:1. Under keyboard. Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)2. Under ELAN PS/2 port smart pad. This device cannot start. (Code 10)The laptop is an Asus x53sv running win 7 64bitI made a recovery disc (in fact there 5) when I first got it but using that wipes the hard drive C:. I know that for XP there is a repair program which you get to by following the procedure for doing a re-install but you have this option which doesn't wipe the hard drive. I've used it.Does something similar exist for Win 7?Thanks in advance.

Anyone know how to change the touchpad settings so that it is inactive when a usb mouse is used with Windows 7? . . I loaded the Dell Alps driver, but cannot find how to change the mouse settings . .

A:[SOLVED] laptop touchpad with windows 7

Some of 'em have a button that controls it (spent 3 hours trying to fix one until I found the button!) - others have a software switch.

Mostly depends on the model that you're using - they tend to change these things from model to model.

I have found references on the web that claim that this isn't possible tho'
