Hello, I am attempting to access the BIOS on my HP Compaq Presario CQ62. It prompts me for a master BIOS password (which I do not know), and reports an error "System Disable. Key: 87231156"Other threads indicate that this is a common issue. May I please have my master BIOS password? And is there any other way to recover this? Thank you so much!Brandon

It will not load stating "Windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause" Status: 0xc000000f Info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I have windows 7 on a bootable USB drive but it gives me the same error when trying to boot from the usb drive. when i try to enter bios to rearrange the boot order it's asking for a password and i have no idea what it is. It's giving me a code # 54391904 any way i can reset password or still boot from USB drive? thank you in advance

My Compaq CQ62-209WM was working great until a couple of weks ago. When I turned it on the screen stayed black, the caps lock light blinks once every 5 seconds, and the wifi light stays orange. Read on this forum of others with similar problems.I tried a hard reset and it worked the first time, long enough for me to back up the important stuff on my hard drive, but did not work the second time (or any time I have tried it since then). One blink indicates CPU failure so I ordered a new CPU and thermal material, dismanteled the unit and replaced the CPU and thermal material this evening. Still have black screen and blinking lights - still one blink every 5 seconds. Tried hard reset, no change.Any suggestions? Not able to replace computer at this time - willing to try almost anything. Thanks in advance.
Hi @micwtx , Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Notebook and issues with the flashing lights and not starting correctly. Here is a link to computer does not start. It has the LED blinking codes and suggests that it could be your System Board. Have you tried to reseat the memory and HDD? (it is in the document) Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.Hope this helps you. Thanks.6 more replies

Changing out a DC socket
I have a question regarding this computer. My friend bought this a while ago at Walmart for $298. Now I just finished fixing on problem with it, then when i plugged it in the laptop doesn't charge. I went no where near the socket when I worked on it but it is extremely loose. The charger works fine, and the battery also works perfectly. it has to be the socket being so loose. I looked up the part and it is much different from other sockets I have seen. Has anyone saw this kind of socket, and how do i replace it? It is Hp part number 486637-001 on their site. Thanks for any info!
Have you tried contacting HP?
Hey guys, need some help. I thought I would help out a friend with his laptop but it is to much for me. Mostly because he is not sure if there are any Recovery discs, and, there seems to be something wrong with the Create Recovery Set function, along with the Recover from Recovery Partition function.
I saw and researched these Addwares/malware or whatever they are:
PC Tech Hotline
Reg Pro Cleaner version 2.0
After as much research as possible I downloaded Emsisoft portable Malware Remover. Then as the tutorials suggested I removed as much of the Addware as possible in Add-Remove programs, including:
Reg Clean Pro
avast free av: because it did not work.
Chrome browser: because it did not work either.
I then ran Emsisoft and quarantined all that it found. There was one that was Medium Risk and one that was of High Risk. I copied the list if you need it. Then tried to run the pc and do some M.S. Updates but ran into an issue with Windows Update Registry issues.
and or 0x80004002
Ran the Trouble Shooter and that produced this Error: 0x8007005(2015-07-14-T-09_48_55P)Not fixed.
I then went back and Unquarantined anything that had the HKEY Prefix, that said "Not a threat" or something to that extent and tried to proceed with updates. It just kept Checking for Updates and never stopped.

This laptop was recently given to a friend of mine. She was told that it would just keep freezing up or shutting off. She brought it to me to check for her because if wouldn't boot. I used a boot disk and got it booted and it seemed ok. Gave it back and she had it a wk and brought it back with problem of freezing up and then no boot. I just put HWmonitor on it and the temps are running from 62-75 C. She said it was constantly doing windows updates and the last one it wouldn't re-boot. I have a plastic think I use with my laptop that has 3 small fans on it and you put it under the laptop. I have had it on over an hour and it has gone up from 70-75 for a high. I finally got it to come up with using Chk Dsk and it did several repairs. That's all I have done with it so far. Does anyone have any suggestions? She didn't have anything with fans under it, but she had it up on a broiler pan off the table.

Upon starting my laptop, I get a message that the system has detected the storage capacity of the primary internal battery is very low and needs to be replaced. No important programs load and the desktop loads normal brightness until I move the cursor and the brightness fades to very low. I have to admit that yesterday, I accidently spilled about 3 tablespoons of lemonade onto the lower right hand side of the keyboard. Everything seemed fine until about an hour later, when the pages of any internet site seemed to scroll down by themselves and I couldn't control with the "page up button"......kept scrolling down. Then when I went to my Vanguard account screen and tried to type in my user name, with the last 3 digits of 627, what kept appearing was 6267. everytime I tried.
Then on an MSNBC site, I was watching a replay of one of their programs and their video program has it's own volume button.
Everytime I tried to raise the volume, it went down on it's own. It wasn't until this morning that when I turned on the lap top, most of the task bar was empty and the screen would fade. I took the back panels off to look for that "internal battery" but couldnt see it.
Research on the internet keeps directing me to the large detachable battery on the back but this battery has proven to be good.
If I take that battery out and just try using only the power cord, I still get the same bad results mentioned above.
I think I narrowed it down to the "... Read more
I'm helping a friend clean up her computer, from malware, viruses, to performance. I've done full scans with AVG and Malware Bytes, while also eliminating many unnecessary programs. The computer has improved 100% but I'm still struggling with single tasks such as opening Google Chrome, or Disk Defrag, for it takes 1-2 min. for them to open. Last night I couldn't even open Disk Defrag... Any suggestions? I could really use a bit of help. Also, there is only 2gb of RAM so it could very well be why everything is delayed...
My personal computer runs two 4GB ram sticks so Its not exactly something I should even compare it with.
I'd advise you to just have her save her personal files on a flash drive, and reinstall the operating system from scratch. You don't know how many files have been corrupted, it might take just as long to fix them as it is to do a total reinstall.more replies

I down loaded the service manual I'm a little confused with the listing of processors that are all amd (ref pages 85,86) this model cpu is a intel. Are these AMD's compatible to INTEL ? TY
Hi: The service manuals listed on your notebook's support page do not match the processor or chipset your notebook comes with. This is the service manual that pertains to the Celeron 900 processor and chipset your notebook has... http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01740724 Note: Because your notebook has the Celeron processor, that means it has the GL-40 chipset and the only other processor you can install from the list in that manual is the T3400. As you can see from the chipset specs below, only processors with a 667 MHz FSB are supported, and the T3400 is the only one on that list in the manual that has a 667 MHz FSB. http://ark.intel.com/products/35501/Intel-82GL40-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller-Hub1 more replies

It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!
You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.
When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

There is a pass word to the BIOS and you need to take out the motherboard battery to erase it. Leave it out for 5 secs, unplug the computer and turn it on unpluged to drain all the power out of it. then reinstall the battery and reboot.
You m,ay have to remove some of the perifs CD burner, JS Ect if it dosent work the first time to drain the power out of everything

The reason I'm adressing you is because of my (now old) computer (Compaq Presario 14XL242) that i wish to upgrade my computer to windows xp. In order to do that i need to update the BIOS.How do I do that?
Greetings, and welcome to TSG!!
Look on the manufacturer's Web site for the BIOS update. There should also be instructions on how to do so.
I erased the bios on a Compaq Presario 5340. Now I need to find a bios for it again. Compaq's site is no help at all.
Does anyone know where I could find one?
(my problem is that it will not boot to the HD. it will only go to the floppy disk with a program called KillDisk on it. i connected the HDs to a different computer and it worked fine without the floppy and booted to the OS. and yes the HD is first for boot order.)

Hello! I'm new here to these forums hoping to find a solution to this problem that has been bugging me for days and keeping me from setting up my computer.
Basically after several years, I am finally dealing with the loss of my Hard-Disk drive that came with my computer. I have bought a new Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ as a replacement, and I am having trouble setting it up. Here are a few Specs for my computer:
Compaq Presario SR1303WM
AMD Sempron 3000+
BIOS Revision 3.11
Mother Board: ASUS A7V8X-LA
It's a bit of an older computer. The HDD that failed me used the old ATA standard, and I am going from that to SATA II (3 Gb/s). My motherboard does have two SATA ports on it, but I don't think the motherboard supports 3 Gb/s transfer rate. Only 1.5 Gb/s. I have an SATA cable that connects directly from the HDD to the MoBo as well as a power converter that I use to connect power to the new HDD. I am using a jumper on the fifth and sixth pins ::[:]: <--- looks like that. The reason I am using a jumper is because I have read by other people that this puts the device into the 1.5 Gb/s mode, although I'm not entirely sure. The Samsung manual my HDD came with says that in order to put the drive into this mode, you must download and use their software from their site, www.samsung.com/hdd which I have tried and failed. When I run Samsung's software, I get the error: "Error reading from drive L: data area: drive not ready (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail?"... Read more

Hi all,I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-310SV notebook that does not want to start ? the screen does not turn on and always remains blank. At startup, when I press power button:Lit only leds for Power, WiFi (orange color) and Touchpad; The fan turns on, but the screen remains blank;Caps Lock and Num Lock keys blink 2 times in a sequence;According to these data, I found that there was an error, indicating to failure of the BIOS. But, despite the fact that on the forum I found many of similar cases, no advice did not help me solve this error. So I decided to ask you for help, describing in detail what I tried hoping that you will point to my mistakes and help me to solve the problem. So:First of all, I tried to perform a hard reset by:Disconnecting the AC adapter, battery and all external peripheral devices;Pressing and holding down the power button for about 1 minute;Plugging the AC adapter back into the notebook;Trying to turn on the notebook; Also I removed the CMOS battery for a few minutes ? no result.Next, I tried to recovering the BIOS using key press combination «Win+B» hoping that my notebook has the emergency BIOS recovery feature enabled. But the notebook silently restarts automatically after few seconds after I released the power button. How I tried to do it?I turned off notebook and I unplugged AC adapter;I disconnected the battery and all external peripheral devices;I plugged AC adapter back into the notebook;Holding «Win+B» I pressed power button and I rel... I went to change the boot sequence to boot from my integrated DVD so I could reload my OS. After making the change I attempted to save the BIOS settings but the system locked up during the process. Now no boot, no screen, no effect when trying to get back into the BIOS. How do I (can I) clear the BIOS?

I just reformatted a friends Compaq Presario 3000 laptop with win xp pro. Everything was working fine on it until I updated the bios. Now the computer starts to come on and then shuts down after about a second. I have tried draining all the power but get the same result. All ideas welcome. Thank you.

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag. Problem: The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details: When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well. And this is about as far as the computer gets. After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect. I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point. I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected. Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail. I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well... Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of). The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... Read more

hey i recently got a compaq presario v6000 from a friend and when i turned it on for the first time i noticed that it made 3 short beeping sounds which i found out that it doesnt have a bios image but anyway the power light a battery light flashes and then reboots but i cant see anything on the screen at all when its powered on. also the fans power on for at least 2 seconds then they turn off. i dont have a hard drive but i need to at least get to the bios so i can reinstall the os using usb drive.
any help would be great and aslo people have been telling me that my motherboard could be warped how would i fix this without buying a new one because i have no money at all for the laptop.
It looks like you may have Bad Ram: Compaq BIOS Beep Codes - BIOS Central.
Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code Compaq Presario SR5510F Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Or it could be the Video adapter on the motherboard. Try removing one stick of RAM and get to the Bios. You can also download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature burn the image to CD with IMGBurn also in my signature or USB and boot off of the disc and run the tests on each stick of RAM separately.
I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.
On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.
When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.
I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.
I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.
I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.
I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

I want to reformat my laptopdon't have recovery discRecovery Manager says "Your computer does not have a Recovery Partition"
Hi: If you live in the USA, you still might be able to order a set of recovery disks from HP or a 3rd party vendor. What is the full model number or product number of your CQ62? The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number.1 more replies
Hello all great website!
Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.
I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.
So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?
My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.
I am so frustrated, I am not completely stupi... Read more

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.
Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.
When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.
I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.
I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.
Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.
Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC
There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz
I have a HP Presario CQ62 notebook that just totally died.
I closed it up after using it normally, came back and opened the lid and it was dead. No lights, not even power supply indicator light. Nothing happens when the power button is pushed of course.
I thought and hoped it was a faulty power supply and a flat battery, but I have a spare power supply so this was able to be ruled out.
Not that it's relevant here, but it's running Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone got any ideas where to look for a solution to this? As it won't fire up on battery or power it has to be after those.
Remove the memory and re install it... Remove the battery and try AC power only. With the battery out and AC out, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Re install the battery and see if the laptop powers up
I'm looking to upgrade the CPU in this laptop as the basic CPU (the 2.2GHz Intel Celeron processor 900) is simply not sufficient for my needs. I've done some of my own research and I've (tentatively) found this list of allegedly compatible processors in the maintainence manual for my laptop; however, I have some questions and concerns. Here are a select few of the ones that are supposedly compatible with my specific system: Intel Core i7-620M Processor (4M cache, 2.66 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.33 GHz) 587259-001Intel Core i5-540M Processor (3M cache, 2.53 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.06 GHz) 594188-001Intel Core i5-520M Processor (3M cache, 2.4 GHz, SC turbo up to 2.93 GHz) 594187-001Intel Core i5-430M Processor (3M cache, 2.26 GHz, SC turbo up to 2.53 GHz) 597624-001Intel Core i3-350M Processor (3M cache, 2.26 GHz) 597623-001Intel Core i3-330M Processor (3M cache, 2.13 GHz) 597622-001Intel Penryn T4300 Processor (3M cache, 2.1 GHz) (for model 1.1 only) 572929-001Intel Penryn T3100 Processor (3M cache, 1.9 GHz) (for model 1.1 only) 572925-001Intel Penryn T4400 Processor (3M cache, 2.2 GHz) (for models 1.1 and 1.2 only) 584296-001Intel Penryn T3300 Processor (3M cache, 2.0 GHz) (for models 1.1 and 1.2 only) 592399-001Pentium Arrandale P6000 Processor (3M cache, 1.86 GHz) (for models 1.1 and 1.2 only) 613586-001Pentium Arrandale P6100 Processor (3M cache, 2.0 GHz) (for model 1.2 only) 613587-001Intel Penryn T4500 Processor (3M cache, 2.3 GHz) (for model 1.1 on... It's more complicated than that. You have a GL40 DDR2 motherboard in that machine and it will only accept the Celeron or Pentium processors. You have to look at both the motherboard and the processor. This is one of the more confusing Service manuals HP has ever published because this series straddles a major hardware change....some use DDR2 and some use DDR3 memory, some use Core 2 Duo era processors and some use the i-series type processors.2 more replies
I hope this is the correct forum. If not, please put me where I belong. Thank you.
My new laptop (Compaq Presario CQ62-215DX Windows 7) will be used for running genealogy CD, DVD etc and for inputting (and backing-up) my family history research data.
I don't want to be connect to the internet. How do I configure the settings, please?
The Legacy.com program on my main computer does have a geo location function but I won't need to use it on my laptop. Therefore, I think I'm okay in choosing not to have internet access on the laptop? Or am I wrong?
Thank you for any help with this.
PS This forum has been extremely helpful for other issues that I've resolved on my own with the advice given to others.
Welcome to TSG
I have moved to the networking forum
You can just disable the Network Adapters - in device manager
Switch off the wireless - I suspect the laptop has a physical switch or a combination of FN + one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
and DONT connect with a network cable to the router/modem
So basically after 2 months of not using my laptop (due to not having a charger) I ordered a new charger, keyboard and stick of ram. Put them in my laptop and for some reason the laptop wont turn on...
When the battery and power supply is in the led blinks continuously, which apparently means insufficient power, but i've left it to charge for hours and still no luck.
When the power supply is out the laptop is completely dead, no lights or sounds as I mash the power button.
Sometimes when i move the charger around (brand new x.x) the white led light next to the charger bit will flash white and then orange, and as soon as that happens I press the power button and it will turn on... but only for literally half a second and then switch back off again (fans turn on etc) and sometimes the screen will light up. On one or two occasions i've managed to turn it on somehow with the fans spinning etc but absolutely no life with the screen... i've left it in that state for an hour the second time i managed it and nothing happened.
I have tried taking the ram out that i put in, aswell as the keyboard but it is still exactly the same. Tried re-seating the ram that was already there and still no luck
Seeing as i'm a computer noob I rang up a computer repair shop thing and they said it is most likely a problem with the motherboard which would cost me over £150...

This laptop keeps shutting down every once in a while. Sometimes every few minutes or every few half hours. Blue terrible screen appears but i am desperate becauce it doesn't last for more than a microsecond so i totally cannot read what it displays and so i don't even know what the problemis :(
It started just very rarely, when i was playing graphically demanding game. Then it worsened when i started using video calling on skype. I reinstalled the operating system (Windows 7) via recovery manager (i have a recovery disc) and it worked better for about a week time, then it worsened and now it was restarting and showing the blue screen every 7 minutes approximately.
I again reinstalled the Windows by the same precodure but there's been one crash already again.
Could you please tell me how to at least identify the problem? How can i make the screen last longer and see what the hell's going on? And then, how could i possibly mend the problem? What could be the cause? Is hardware or software issue? It used to crash only when doing something more "graphical" but now it occures whenever, even when i do literally nothing with it! Please help; i am just a totally PC lame girl :(((( if there are specifications neccessary, i would give, if you only tell me how to find and tell you...
Hello annie55 and welcome to TSF,
Tap F8 immediately after the Compaq screen. This should bring up the advanced boot options menu.
Select "Disable automatic restart on system failure".
This will cause the BSOD to stay on screen until you physically restart the computer.
Post back with the details of the BSOD.
