A PC on our network recently came down with a rogue antivirus infection that I found and cleaned with Malwarebytes. (Fake.Alert, Trojan.Agent and Malware.Trace) After cleaning, the PC now won't run most .exe files either from shortcuts or from Program Files in Windows Explorer. Attempts to run apps either result in the Application Unknown error message or launching of the "Open With" dialogue.

Noted exceptions: Outlook and IE will both run from the Start Menu shortcuts but will not launch from desktop shortcuts, QuickLaunch or from Windows Explorer.

The inability to run .exe files is limited to the user profile that was involved with the original infection. Administrator does not have any problems at all with executables.

I tried a couple of things I found in on this site and on the Microsoft support site.

1. While logged in as Administrator, I went to the file types dialogue to make sure that EXE files were associated with Applications. EXE does not actually appear in the list of registered file types though when I click "New" and try to create a new association for EXE, it says it is already registered with the file type Application. I tried repeating this while logged into the buggy profile but all options in the dialogue are grayed out. Again, EXE is not in the list of registered file types.

2. Then I went to regedit and looked up the exefile/shell/open/command key. The string is "%1" %* which is what it's supposed to be I belie... Read more

Hi, thought I'd see if all is well on the folk's PC, since I'm not up close and personal with it like this often. For one thing I think the google toolbar entries are different than they are on other machines I have it on. (Mainly want to make sure nothing sinister is going on, but would also be interested in shutting off everything that can be. For example I did install Windows Messenger and enable Remote Assistance since we are going to try that when the need arises after I leave again, but assume I should figure out how to keep Windows Messenger from being on all the time. It's not enabled in msconfig or anything.)

Here's their log. We all thank you!

Hi,
I would like to surpress the CheckOut and/or CheckIn notification when I open a file on a SharePoint share for editing and saving

I have some macros working that correctly do the CheckOut and CheckIn of a file on SharePoint.

However, like the command Application . DispalyAlters = False to avoid the confirmation prompts when deleting or overwriting a file I was wondering if there is an option when addressing an Excel file which I open to modify or add a record to avoid getting the Prompt, it reduces the click moments for a user and also avoids the mistake if somebody places a check-mark and the file remains checked out for all others.
I hope I was able to explain my requirement

Hello -

A group that I am associated with is evaluating a Sharepoint 3 site, and I have been having problems with testing Windows 7 configurations.

Specifically, I have a Windows 7 system using IE8 and Office 2007 student. I can check out, edit and check in a document using Word, but when I reopen the modified file from the Sharepoint 3 site, my changes are not visible.

Does anybody have experience with a problem like this, and if so, were you able to find a solution?

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.

Bob

Hi guys.. looking for some support if possible.  Pretty much a noob to HPDM but I'm learning fast!! I have a new deployment of HPDM 4.7 SP3 installed which has an agent version of 4.7.3660.23743. I've inhertied a Thin Client estate which mostly has a 4yr old version of the client out there, ver 4.4.3660.12990. These clients are mainly t610s.  Ive tried to import 10 or so of these clients manually, but they arent checking in and remain in the Unidentified tab.  Ive found some newer thin clients, t620s, running clients around 4.6, and they check in no problem and i can upgrade them via the _Upgrade Agent job, no problems. If i try to manually point these older agents to my DM server, I get "Error of writing gateway address, please retry it", i guess the agent software is corrupted in some way.  These are all WES7 32bit clients so there appears to be no MSI or method for me to deploy this manually. Willing to set a GPO to upgrade these agents if need be.. is there any manual method for upgrading 32bit OS agents? Tried to pick apart the _Upgrade Agent task also, to see if i can script this manually, but I'm having no luck with this.  Any help appreciated with a way to upgrade my agents!!  ThanksAndy

Hi all, so recently I have reformatted my hard drive and fresh installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my PC got all of my drivers and software without problem and copied everything off my external Hard Drive without an issue, also had no issues while doing Windows Updates, so anyhow after I did the Windows Updates on my system I decided to run Disk Cleanup and to Clean Up System Files, had no issues here, was able to select everything, clicked OK and then Delete Files, well now it is getting stuck on Windows Update Cleanup, been stuck for over an hour, any solutions to make this go a little faster, thanks for any help

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Suggestions anyone?

Well, as the title suggests, I'm having an issue with Disk Cleanup with a new SSD I recently purchased. In all my years with HDDs I never had this problem. I've been running Windows 8.1 with an HDD for over a year now with no such problem so this is quite new & odd to me. The Windows Update Cleanup feature in Disk Cleanup always worked for me with a HDD. If there was ever a time it didn't work, I certainly can't recall. I'm assuming it's something in the way SSDs are built vs. standard HDDs. Though again, this is my first SSD so, I rally don't have others to compare it to.

So, essentially when Disk Cleanup gets to the Windows Update Cleanup part, it hangs:

I tried:

sfc /scannow & I tried:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

But, when I get to to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth it hangs:

It's been a while since I had to do any major PC repairs & this is my first personal run in with this particular issue & maybe I'm just out of touch. Maybe missed a few steps? Can somebody help me out? This is the SSD that I have if that helps Kingston High Performance SATA Solid-State Drives (SSD) for Laptops, Desktops and Servers in 60GB, 120GB, 180GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities.

You can try Ccleaner, it is in the down load section.  You will have to check the boxes that remove them, you should take note of at least the last ten events.

Disk Cleanup (Windows Update Cleanup) removes Windows updates KB3031432,KB3021952, and KB3004375. I have never had this problem before. I use Disk Cleanup after every monthly Microsoft updates. I had to reinstall listed updates on two computers when I checked
for new Windows updates. Why is this? Windows Update Cleanup section of Disk Cleanup should not remove updates. Can not completely cleanup my computers. Rodney

Dear Sir:I need some help. My wife and I have three computers, a desktop running XP Pro and two HP Pavilion dv2000's also running XPPro. All three are infected. In December I opened an email which appeared to be from my bank, The next time I opened my bank's web page, and logged in it did not look right to me and I closed the browser.Soon afterwards, I realized I was infected with a trojan/virus/worm or whatever. I thought that my AVG antivirus removed it,but the problem persists.I took the computer to my local computer shop where they ran the harddrive as a slave to their master, running a ComputerAssociates antivirus, which deleted C:\cleanup.exe and declared the computer clean. After I got it home, the problembegan to reappear when I uninstalled, then reinstalled Malwarebytes, and ran it.It is for the most part very latent, and is not detected by Micorsoft's online scanner, or by AVG, or by the normal Malwarebytes'scanner. But if I run the randomly named Malwarebytes' .exe or GMER or RootRepeal it will take over the computer and freezeup all operations. It creates a files named C:\cleanup.exe and C:\cleanup.bat and C:\zip.exe and alters the ServiceGroupOrder registry.I was unable to complete a full GMER scan as the trojan/virus/worm hijacked the computer. I copied the short immediate scanresults and attach them.Per you instructions:I have backed up my data onto a usb Seagate harddrive, which may or may not be infected.I have c... Read more

A:Hijack this log fixes please for me?

Hello Kevin3310 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. the first thing we need to do is update the operating system on this computer.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

Sony Vaio laptop, XP, Intel Centrino Duo

I could use some advice regarding my laptop. It is running VERY slowly. I've done all the fixes (keep the registry clean with RegCure), managed the automatic start up programs, run a complete virus and malware scan (Malwarebytes and Comodo), run the systems tools disk cleanup, uninstalled unused programs.

The HD (226GB, 70.7 free)is approx 1.5 years old.

By slow, I mean that it is taking a very long time to open folder windows, longer to open programs, choking if I try to run more than one program, gagging on simple commands - i.e. open a new tab in browser, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:done all the fixes - still slow

keep the registry clean with RegCureCould be a part of your problem....Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry. Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove en... Read more

Hi All,

I'm curious if there are other ways to get Win7 to be more compatible with certain programs than just running them in "compatability mode"? The problem that I've run into is with some of my more complex programs like Solidworks. The copy I have isn't really compatible with Win7 so that whenever I try to open a file or save one, the program just crashes. I've found a fix for the problem, which involves renaming a DLL, but such a fix is almost always trouble in my experience, with this one being no exception, making the program very unstable and corrupting saved file data. Now, since I use this program almost every day, I've found myself thinking about going back to Vista x64 because it worked there, but I wanted to stop by here just to make sure there isn't a better way to deal with compatibility issues than simply running the "compatibility troubleshooter" that I might not yet know about that could solve my problem.

Any help would be great,
Greg

A:Better Compatibility Fixes?

Hi treblesum81 and welcome to the forum!

Please download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package, here then restart.

It has been reported that installing this package resolves the issue with Solidworks 2009 not running properly in Windows 7. As somehow the redistributable included in the updates needs the update and or experiences corruption during an install together with other components.

Please let us know how it turns out

hi, Nothing like any hijackers in your log, but give this a look:

This does not refer to any Instant Messenger programs and does not harm their function!
Read it all and perhaps give it a try, might stop a lot of the pops.

Hey all, its my first post here at BleepingComputer - I work at our university IT Helpdesk where we see every sort of problem on most operating systems. In my journeys around the internet for the various fixes I found that I could trust any fix I found on here, so why not become part of the community?

What I am questing for: Good, free programs that are anti-spyware, anti-malware, registry fixes, rogue file removers, you name it. If you know of one I didnt list it would be fantastic if you could link it :D

The mainstays of our helpdesk fixes:

Combofix
Spybot Search and Destroy
Winsockfix
Smitrem
Smitfraud
ATF Cleaner
Mcafee and Norton removal tools
HijackThis
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Anyone have any other gems that they would recommend I use? We are seeing more and more people come in with some version of the MS Antivirus 2008 and Id love to find a tool to clear that out too.

Thanks a ton!

I purchased and assembled my computer myself, which may be my first problem. Software issues I have handled on my own in the past, but this was the first time installing hardware. I have done plenty of google searches and nothing seems to point me in the right direction.
I need a way to collect all information from the BSODs I am encounter so I can post and get help for it. It happens quite a lot and ranges from dxgmms1 to bad pool caller to memory management and so on..
I was directed here from Reddit, and another user asked if I could gather information from the minidump file to post. However, upon finding this folder in the Windows Folder, it is completely empty. I checked to see if error reporting was on and it was already selected, so I am wondering if there is another way to gather the information needed to help.
I also have an issue where on fresh startup everything will run fine and dandy, however, if I switch between playing games and web browsing or playing a game, closing it, and starting a new game, my video driver fails, every time. 304.11 error, then I need to do a full restart to do anything. A very kind person on these boards told me to start the pc in safe mode, run HJT and fix several sections of the data. I was also told to run several scans including Ewido and Active Scan. I have done this. The guy then told me to rerun HJT and post the new log along with those from the Ewido and ActiveScan scans. I am doing this now. Hi,

I just found this site looking for info on how to do a clean install of Win 7. It was very helpfull.
There is one problem I haven't been able to solve. Though I have tried many of the tutorials.
Win 7 won't share with my XP computer on the home network. This is what I have done:
Pinged the computers successfully. Made sure the workgroup names were the same. Per one of the tutorials, I changed the workgroup from Home to Work. I created a Share on the Win 7 and
it shows up on the network.
When I click on the shared item on XP computer, I get "Access Denied". One thing I think is strange, and may be the
answer, the XP's Computer Name shows up on the Win 7 Computer and is accessable, but on the XP computer Win 7's I.D. Name shows up instead. I have to go to "View Workgroup computers"to see it. The computer I put Win 7 on is a Dell Vostro 1000.
It has an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor TK-55 2GHz, 2GB total memory, a
Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN mini card, with the latest driver, and a 300GB WDC Hard Drive.
Thanks so much for looking at this. I have spent days trying to figure it out.

From my experience it's because of different levels of encryption,
under your network options/advanced there should be a radial for enable 40-56 bit encryption.

Before doing this, my 64-Bit exe would hang before the main menu.
1). Launch the game using the 32-bit executable first
2). Settings/Advanced - Set Post Processing to High (HUGE FPS Gain no matter the resolution - I game with crysis @ 1680x1050 16:10 22" WS )
3). Now choose your normal resolution
4). Launch a new game atleast once, then exit
5). Now open 64-Bit executable and you can do 64-Bit

Now it works!

This one didn't work for me, but others have had success
If that doesn't work for you, then try this:
1). Launch the 32-Bit application first
2). Goto options "uncheck fullscreen" and save then exit
3). Launch the 64-Bit version

ALWAYS CREATE A SHORTCUT TO YOUR DESKTOP!!!!
RIGHT CLICK AND CHOOSE "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR"

Just thought I would post some workarounds for those having trouble getting the game to run.

Anyone have an idea what could be going on? My connection is up and running most of the time, however, it occassionally doesn't connect. There seems to be an interesting fix though. I open Opera, refresh the page and then both IE and OE will connect again when I reopen them. While I like Opera it is not my primary browser and these extra steps are kinda annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

I am almost certain my SSD has gotten a bit slower since I have bought it. I have a 30 GB OCZ Vertex drive with firmware 1.4. It is a second generation drive. I am running Windows 7 x64.

File transfers between hard drives used to be 100 MB/s, now they are around 75 MB/s. That is the only thing I can go on. Windows start up time hasn't changed. Program loads might be slower, but I can't be too sure.

It there anything kind of maintenance I can run? With traditional HDDs I used to defrag but that is not needed for SSDs. I want my SSD to be running in top shape without doing anything too extreme. I already Disable Superfetch/Disable Defrag scheduler/Disable drive Indexing. What about this wiper.exe program? I downloaded it and tried to run it but it won't let me...And I right Windows 7 automatically takes care of SSDs, how can I be sure that?

I first installed Windows 7x64 on my 1500GB WD drive, then I reinstalled Windows on my SSD however I later realized that I left the boot files on the 1500GB drive and then I had to run a windows repair to sever the link between the SSD and the 1500 GB drive.

A:SSD became slow, any fixes?

Suggest you run HD Tune to see whether it is really slower. Maybe there is another problem. The wiper only helps with write operations.
But since you played with your MBR, the alignment could be out of wack. Check that in msinfo32 > Components > storage > disks > partition starting offset (should be 1MB).

Windows has taught me (through the error that Vista managed to generate when i was using it) that the 'restart' button is a useful tool.

More as a comment on Windows 7 than a complaint, the main issue I have encountered in a meagre 4 days of use is that the computer always manages to discover that some program is still open when in the process of shutting down.

The most recent case:
Upon hitting restart, I am removed to a darkened screen telling me that a program is still running. This time, instead of it being Firefox or Open Office, it was explorer (as in explorer.exe)
Windows chose to tell me that I needed to force a shutdown as explorer.exe was busy "playing the log-off sound"

I could not cancel, however I could access that ctrl+alt+del page, but could go nowhere from there. and then it froze. lovely

Yesterday it also froze 20 updates into installation of 23-updates. Complete lack of response from the computer - issue was resolved when restart was forced and it installed the updates later with no problems.

A:Restarting fixes everything?

when you mention 23 updates, it sound to me you just installed the OS, but FF prior to running windows update. is this a different hard drive? it could be a bad drive if it's a new OS install.

I have run hijackthis, spybot, and ad-aware 6.0 several times, removing all items, and restarted my computer. It is an HP pavillion windows XP. I continue to get something which tries to change my start page on the internet explorer to a blank start page that is something related to a web search page and tries to enter a BHO and adds ever changing .dll file to system32 library in windows. I have spywareguard which stops these actions and allows me to change back to my original start page and other web page info, plus identifies the BHO and the .dll file causing the problem. So far, I have to go to windows/system32 and delete that .dll file (newest one in the lib) for this to stop happening. This keeps happening randomly every day for the last few weeks. I cannot seem to find the source. I have also run fixitbear, pcbugdoctor, bhodemon, regsupreme, cwshredder, and guardie. I have listed below my latest results from hijackthis for your review to see if there is anything you see. I just cleaned it but maybe it will help. Please what else can I do to remove this forever??? Thanks so very much...

i'll keep it short. this is kindof a follow up to my other posts. basically i had the BSOD telling me i had "unmountable volume". After trying to reboot in the last know configuration and safe mode, and having both of them fail, i tried Chkdsk /r and Chkdsk /p and fixboot with no luck. They most i got in the hours i tried to let them run was 1% complete. So, i have a computer that is not functional whatsoever and i would like to get it up and running asap as i am back to college for classes now. I am thinking the next step is a repair install of windows?! is this the next best thing? Any suggestions you would have are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your helpo again guys!

Hi there,
I have recently got 3-5 different types of BSOD.
Here are some of the things that may help / fix your machine.

1) New network card adapter drivers : Some network adapters don't
work in general with 64 bit windows and/or windows 7.
Try installing new drivers for your device, if you have installed new
drivers then that might be the problem.
2 ) Rtl_not_less_or_equal : This is a most likely a problem with either your realtech Audio drivers or Network card Drivers. The best way to fix this is re-install the drivers or get new ones. Then Download a Program called CCcleaner, it's free and very easy to use. When CcCleaner is open click Cleaner and then Run Cleaner.
Then press Registry > Scan for Issues then when it found the errors click selected Issues Click no for the following Question and then Fix all Selected Issues ( You may want to do this 2-4 times the first time you do it )

3 )Bad pool pointer / Special pool Detected Memory Corruption / Memory corruption:
There is two solutions to this problem ( Which I Have Found Myself ) Your ram sticks are in the wrong slots may be as simple as changing them around.
Another Cause is Windows updates, You have probably recently updated your computer which has caused the error, to remove the updates go to the start menu and type " System Restore " ( This will bring your computer back to a certain date you want ) Click Choose a restore date, Then select a date where before the updates were installed , This might t... A:Some fixes for BSOD.

Hello, and welcome to SF!

Thanks for sharing your fixes.

We don't recommend the use of registry cleaners here, especially in the Crashes section. Registry cleaners are known to do more harm than good, and registry errors typically don't cause BSODs anyway. The usual causes are incompatible/buggy drivers, and hardware.

If anyone has BSODs, please see: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

As each BSOD is a little bit different, it's helpful to have a new report for each BSOD case.

Hello All -

Been wrestling with this for the entire weekend... I have some CDs with xrays on them, and they also include a portable image viewer that is supposed to autorun when the CD is inserted. My CD/DVD player will not read the contents of the CD (not even to show me the files via Explorer). It will, however, play music CDs and DVDs, so I'm thinking the drive itself is OK. The drive is a Sony Q58A.

"What does it do when you insert the CD?" Glad you asked - I can hear the disc spin up, and then I get several quick "chirping" noises, followed by a longer sort of "swoosh" - I'm guessing these are disk "seeks". It acts like it's looking for something.

Here's what I've done to try to fix:

- Tried the same CD in another Win 7 Home computer - runs fine. While I was at it, copied all of the files to that other computer, and burned a new CD - no joy.
- Tried other CDs containing xray images and free viewer, and they don't work in this laptop, either.
- Registry entries: NoDriveAutorun entry does not appear, but NoDriveTypeAutorun is set to x91 (145).
- Microsoft FixIt 50475
- Set Autorun options for all drives in various ways, including, "Show me the files", for any and all types of discs
- Deleted the "Lower Filters" in the registry - can't remember what key that was, now, but no ill effects. The "Upper Filters" didn't appear.
- Searched for new CD/DVD drivers - that results in a msg s... Read more

A:CD/DVD autorun - I've tried everything! (except whatever fixes it)

Did you get this disc from a doctor? Might they have produced it with a Mac, and not a PC? Could this software image-viewer program be for a Mac, and not for a PC? Most medical software is designed for use on Apple systems, not Windows.

I had an MRI taken of my shoulder three years ago after a dislocation and muscle tear, and asked the doctor for a copy of the disc he had been sent by the radiologist. Well, despite the fact that I was able to look at all the images from this disc in the office with the doctor on his own Mac, I couldn't even look at the contents of the disc on my own Windows machines.

I think the file system used for optical media on a Mac is unrecognizable in Windows.

This may be your explanation.

a while ago i managed to get a virus onto my computer through a rather dim-witted friend but managed to deal with it using AVG, unfortunately AVG decided to remove a file named 'tuvTnKcB.dll'. Now everytime i start my computer i get a message telling me it couldnt be loaded and 'the specified module could not be found'.

My question is if anyone knows any DLL error fixing progs that should be able to fix this, i tried my usual method of googling for one but didnt wanna trust any of the ones that came up, as a last resort does anyone know of a way i could stop the popup from telling me each and every time.. because so far i havent noticed anything different without this file.

I run windows vista 64-bit, thanks in advance for any replies

A:DLL prob, know any fixes?

That DLL is related to the spyware you removed with AVG.

Go here to Symantec - down at the bottom of the page it
tells you the registry entries to check and remove.

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-112111-3912-99&tabid=3

I googled your DLL - "Trojan.Vundo" was the malware that came up, so that is why I sent
that particular link.

I have been using Firefox for several months then last week it began 'not opening' when I clicked the shortcut icon. The hourglass would appear for two seconds then disappear. I then clicked on my Google shortcut icon - same thing. I could, however, right click on Google then click 'open' and it would open but in IE only. Could not do this with Firefox. I downloaded Mozilla to see if this would reoccur and it did after several days of 'good behavior'. No other shortcuts are affected. Now the only way I can access internet is with IE.

Hi,
I know when I see distorted fonts displayed, a likely cause is the lack of a printer or the wrong printer drivers, but I don't know why. So, it's cool because I can fix it, but not, because I can't explain it. I am figuring some fonts get installed in the print driver load, but woudllike to actually back up what I am doing

Thanks in advance!

A:Printer fixes font

I don't understand what you're asking.

If you the print-outs you are getting are corrupted then you either the driver you are using is corrupt or its not the right one. You should be able to download a new driver from the manufacturer of the printer.

If the text or images are not clear on the printout you may just need to clean the print head in the printer or replace the cartridges.

I've read all the posts about the consrv.dll problem
Been working on this for a day or so now. Much the same problem on Win 7 64bit PC

Started out with Security Protection Fake AV and removed it with MBAM (I think I had to do it in Safe Mode)
The AV software was expired so I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and it found the consrv.dll and removed it -- of course as many have found, when it's deleted it won't reboot and you have to do a System Restore to get it up and running and then you're back in the same boat.
I did the registry tweak regarding the winsrv/consrv swap but every time I changed it to winsrv, it changed back immediately.
Downloaded the latest Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool and ran it - found another file desktop.ini in the GAC folder (that's a new one), disinfected, and again, wouldn't reboot.
This is painful.

Hey guys, I'm at my wits end here. I've been on the web looking for fixes for the svchost.exe memory leak, and I've tried just about everything. I first did the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and WindowsXPKB927891.exe, along with the fix_svchost.bat file. I can't run the programs though because it says I already have them and don't need them. I found another forum that said it was something in the regedit, but that didn't work either. I've tried running other programs that claim to fix it, but nothings working. Everytime I Ctrl+Alt+Delete the svchost.exe that is causing the problem, it causes my sound drivers to fail, so it's annoying having to reboot every single time to get a few minutes of running my PC smoothly.

Any help you guys can provide will be appreciated. My system specs are as follows.

I read on a site that dial up modems are optimized for web surfing and that a modem can be configured for optimal ping rates. Is there any truth to this? If so, how do I do this?

I'm using a USrobotics modem, it's great for web-surfing, as fast as a dsl connection that I tried elsewhere. For gaming it's purely mediocre. I play WoW and get pings of 900-1500 while trying to pvp, which is unplayable by any standard.

Modem is USR-2973-OEM, please help if you know anything, a ping at 600 would be a god send at this point.

hello everyone, my Radeon HD 4870 idles at 78C and from what ive read online, its too hot. I've also read the common solution is to create a profile and then edit the onboard fan that way

the fix is:
if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware(username)\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE \Bretw are. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

the problem is that I cannot find the profile i saved even with the above header. I tried doing a search on my computer for the profile but no success. anyone have any ideas?

my OS is Vista 64bit. Thank you all for your help!

A:4870 too hot: fixes will not work

I'm not sure how a profile will work.

Your case cooling can effect the heat of your video card. the 4870 should be Ejecting hot air out the rear of the case - but if the inside of your case is already WARM, it could cause a problem. Try to remove the cover and blow a small fan inside the case and see if it makes a difference.

Also, the cooling system on the card could be defective (not installed correctly).

IE 7 no longer runs. I hardly ever used it since installing it a week or two ago so I don't know why it suddenly fails to run.

Common fixes tried:

I do not have "Spy Bot" or SpyDoctor on this computer.
I have Norton System works basic (~2007) and Norton internet security 2008.

I tried the "start" "run" ????cpl.cpl thingie and there was absolutely no response from computer to that.

RIES or whatever it is - I can't try because there is no "internet options" folder in my control panel.
(why is there no "internet options" folder?????)

I ran dougknox.com vbs script. That was supposed to give me internet options or something, and when I tried to reboot it was almost impossible to get the computer to close down programs and shut down and reboot. Finally it did. But nothing seems to have changed.
Still no "internet options" in control panel. Still IE7 won't run.

I do not want to do a full uninstall of IE7 because doing that is what completely destroyed the previous OS of XP that was on this computer. After trying to do that, a lot of things would no longer run, including device manager, and a dozen error messages would come up with every boot up. After that I installed a new hard drive and installed a fresh out of the box retail XP home - that was only a week or two ago.

And yes I have SP1, SP2 and SP3 installed on this. The first two came with the retail XP and I downloaded and installed the SP3... Read more

A:[SOLVED] common fixes tried; IE7 will not run

I never did find out what was wrong, but when I tried to activate my windows XP yesterday, I got the same error message. Something to do with urlmon.dll.

I ran Norton Windoctor and it gave me a million messages saying that msvcr80.dll was missing. There are a million websites that talk abut that that file and one of them had a comment from a microsoft person that said Norton is wrong about that file being missing. So I wasn't sure about anything out there on the web and didn't fool with that. I ran System File Checker, at the suggestion of some other windows XP oriented website, and SFC claimed it was copying files from my install CD to a cache on the hard drive.

That took almost an hour and when it "finished" - it said nothing. No messages, not even "reboot your computer." (I DID reboot anyway). I tried to active XP and got the same D__ message. Tried to run IE7 and got the same D___ message. So nothing seems to have been effected or changed by system file checker. The one in windows 98 was better than this at doing things and providing information as it went along.

At that point, I found that Norton "GoBack" no longer gave anything but a blank menu. I did not do a system restore with XP because I just could not figure out how far back to go since I didn't know when these problems actually began. (I first noticed a problem that morning, when I tried to run IE to see which version I had and it would not even start. That is when I fir... Read more

I just resently reformated my computer (which I do every 3-6 months) and I got it all going again, except my messengers won't work like I want them to (except google talk). I downloaded Yahoo messenger and as soon as I logged in I got the, "An error has occured on the script of this page." Of course this is just going to make me made because I want to talk to some of my friend that I can't talk to on Google talk. So I continue to message them and the script pops up again. I Go and remove the program, and install it again, and the same thing but when I sign on the message doesn't pop up only when I message, and my webcam won't work either. So I go and try to download trilian, and the weather now thing that comes with it is haveing script errors. Then I go to downloda Direct X and all the validation goes through and it says that my network connection isn't work and to try back later. So this is all within and hour and I'm getting pretty mad. I download the latest version of IE so I can have MSN messenger, and then it asks me to restart my computer (standard procedure) and so I'm sitting here now going out of my mind because script erro... Hi there
since at the moment there doesn't seem any inclination for Ms to provide an SP2 for W7 - are there any decent ways to download manually (Not Install) all the updates to W7 from after SP1 to current and then slipstream these into an SP1 install set (either DVD or USB).

It was easy with XP to do this - but if you need to install W7 on 4 or 5 different computers with different hardware then downloading the same set of updates seems a total waste of time even with decent broadband speeds -- also in any case you might not be connected to the Internet while installing.

Licenses etc are OK -- the Windows 7 editions are all retail legit W7 PRO.

(BTW you've guessed it --these computers are being converted from W8==>W7 for some people I know. I don't have too many issues with W8 but others do and it's their choice of course).

cheers

First, let me start by saying a big THANKS for the support & knowledge I've received from being a member of these forums. I can usually find a fix by searching & it usually works. Kudos, experts! This time, I am stymied and need some help desperately.

I am running WinXP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 2350 60GB hard drive, 1GB RAM. I am connected on a P2P network with 5 PCs. Trend Micro was recommended by a friend for our small business' AV needs. Installed ~1 month ago. Noticed progressive slowing of system so finally, last Thu, I tweaked my firewall settings. (DISCLAIMER: I know enough about computers to fix easy problems AND to be dangerous but the firewall settings are beyond me..)

Then I start having random freezes, having to shut down the bad way, errors when accessing WinXP svcs, like control panel, CTRL-ALT-DEL, etc, and finally Fri lost my keyboard/mouse/receiver (Logitech). Tried to reinstall software but got errors. Called said "friend" and he told me to run RegSupreme & apply suggested fixes (bad, bad friend ) Things went from bad to worse, but I did get Logitech software reinstalled (now I think I don't necessarily need??)

After searching, found posts here saying to run anti-spyware, so I ran Spybot & SUPERAntiSpyware. Low-level issues found & fixed. Restored backup from RegSupreme and then ran SFC /scannow. No more sidebyside errors.

Yet, I am still having random freezes, printing problems, apps shutting off (APC softw... Read more

A:System Issues even after some fixes..

Ran WinDirStat b/c I have continued with random freezing.

My pagefile.sys is 1.9GB. Perhaps this correct, but I don't ever remember noticing this before.

Upon investigation, I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q130016/ which states the 'Everyone' group (My Computer>c:>properties>security) should have 'Full Control'. When I looked at mine, there are no checks in 'Allow' or 'Deny' for this group. I've left as-is until I get further guidance here.

Thanks for any help offered!

Hello,
I have heard allot about you guys, so lets see if you can help me remedy the following:

I have windows XP, I got a desktop hj about a month ago, and went through many steps to fix it (first hjthislogs, malwarebytes, sdfix, then combo fix). It did the job and got rid of the blue screen, and gave me back my desktop, and everything was working great........Until I rebooted.
After I reboot, everything goes back to hell. When I reboot, the task bar is hidden, and will not come up unless I check to add the address tool bar, and then pull up the toolbar to see it. Then if I minimize applications or windows, they do not show up on task bar. I then cannot drag any folders, or cut and past items etc. If I do not reboot after going through the motions everything is fine.

Please let me know if this is a common problem, or if I am missing a step.

I have posted my last combo log and hjt log

I'm running Vista on a Toshiba laptop. If I go into computer, it tells me that the total size of my C drive is 74.9 GB and that I've only got 13 GB of free space. I have already moved my Photos, Docs, Music and Videos over to my E drive and removed programs, etc. that I wasn't using. That is, of course, except for some files that I don't know whether I can safely remove. I've done a couple of cleanups, too.

I know this problem isn't uncommon, but I haven't been able to find a satisfactory fix by searching the net.

Hi

I have a brand new PC with an ASUS P9X79 motherboard and two harddisks C: and D: with Windows 7 on the C: disk.

My previous PC was a Dell laptop and I was assured I could insert the harddisk (running Windows Vista) from that computer, format it and have a third harddisk. So that's what I've done this evening...

Complete fail...

After entering the Diskmanager I formatted the new F: disk and restarted the computer.

The following message appears:

BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Now I search for help on the internet and find various ways to fix this.

My first problem starts when I've run the Windows 7 install CD and tells the system to Repair my system. I then get the following message:

This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disk that is compatible with this version of Windows.

Ok - so now I do not get any further

For some reason however I have a couple of times not seen this message and instead being shown the next page where I first tried to repar the system automatically. No luck with that...

The next time I came to the System Recovery Options (I do not know what I do, if I do anything. Most of the time the "not compatible version" error message appears) I entered the Command Prompt and wrote

bootrec /rebuildbcd

I can't remember what happens but it does not fix the problem. So the next time I write the following (found on a Nor... Read more

In your BIOS, you should have a section where your boot device priority is. There should also be a section where you can set in which order the HDDs boot, so if the HDD is set to be the highest priority, within this there should be a section where you can set which HDD boots first. Try changing it to the HDD with Windows 7 on.

A:Expert Opinion Before Hjt Fixes

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today. It is a good idea to print off these instructions:This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost. Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.Run HijackThis. On the first menu, click Open the Misc Tools SectionClick Open Uninstall ManagerClick Save List - Save it anywhere.A notepad will pop-up after it's saved, please copy everything in that Notepad and paste it here. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmdSelect option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter. A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.David

Hi i have Net intelligence installed on my laptop that we got from the Home Access scheme,we cant use the internet at all,it says something about the web filter not being downloaded yet,ive tried logging into the Net intelligence with the username and password but it says login error : account not valid.

So ive tried to un install the software through the remove programmes section, but when i click uninstall it says "cannot access the uninstall file".

I removed this software when we first got the laptop quite easily, but the laptops not used by me anymore as i have my own pc (because they're 100x better ).It seems to have undergone a reformat or some kind of restore thats returned them to the defaults and it wont access the uninstall file basicly, which is what i need to get to so that i can un install it.Ive tried going into the file manually,as well as running as admin.Ive phoned XMA (who i got it from) net intelligence who directed me to Comets and all i get is that i have to pay a charge of 20 for their technician to tell me what to do.

So if anybody here can help me get this laptop to work ill pay you 10

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
Recently certain some EXE's I open started generating the following error:
Code:
Runtime Error 429
AcitveX component can't create the object.
All EXE's with this issue have worked before. I believe this happened when I installed some microsoft updates.

Well, I have been searching google, microsoft, and every forum I can find for days. I have tried every fix I have found and none work.

I believe I narrowed down my problem to one file: scrrun.dll
Now matter what I do I cannot register it! I have replaced it multiple times and re-installed visual basic runtime 6.0 sp6. I downloaded some program that checks files for permissions, and I have full permissions. I don't know what to do. I get the following error:
Code:
dllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\scrrun.dll failed.
Return code was: 0x80004005
On some site it talked about dll entries in the registry. DON'T WORRY, I DIDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING YET! I searched for scrrun.dll with 'find'. It brought me to TWO entries next to eachother. They were slightly different, yet both refer to scrrun.dll. Upon examination of other entries, each dll only had one. Is this my problem? Below are screenshots.

[ARRR! Its says I can't because they link to another site!!]

A:Another 429 error, but other fixes don't work

Please, I am see many posts above me solved, but no one has even replied to mine!

UPDATE:

-Tried deleting both reg. keys mentioned above
-Tried different versions of the dll
-Tried registering the same dll under a different name
-Spent a few more hours endlessly searching the internet

All resulted in failure.
Please guys, I am desperate!

Hi, I'm having some minor problems related to Binkw32.dll .
Now, I've read a ton of different threads and random Know-How On how to to some basics to fix and issue im having with it, and all the issue is, is typically I got the error with my cracked version of a game. Now the only issue is, is that the game ISN'T installed yet and im just getting the "Binkw32.dll is not found" when clicking my Setup file. I've tried restarting my computer (Obviously), and I've extracted the file to my system32 directory. I've tried to use command prompt to manually "Regsvr32 -File-Name-" and Still nothing works. People have told me to install it in my Game Folders Directory, BUT I DON'T HAVE ONE.
It's just a pain in the *** spending Days trying to find the right download then having these issues. I guess my main concern is that maybe Binkw32.dll May not be compatible with my Windows 7 and I worried that it might have been a wast of time.

Any suggestions?

Cannot assist you with cracked versions.

My advice to you is to reinstall the OS.

I purchased a Yoga 700 14ISK about a month ago. I'm enjoying it so far, with one exception. The computer emits a high pitched noise almost constantly, even when CPU use is low (just browsing, PDF reading, e-mail type things) and the fan turns on very frequently even when the machine isn't running hot. For example, I'm only running Chrome and e-mail right now, but the fan is running at full blast.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem, and is there a fix for it? I have read about BIOS updates for previous models that allowed access to fan settings. Will something like that be released for this model?  Like I said, really enjoying using this notebook (recently switched over from a MacBook Pro), but the noise is really annoying.

A:Yoga 700, noisy fan... any fixes?

I believe that this is a problem with all Yoga series laptops (except Yoga 2 Pro). The fan noise is really unbearable - loud and high-pitched...I've just had mine for a week and thinking of returning it because of this issue.

A:Microsoft Word Fixes

Nice article, but it ignores what is perhaps the most annoying Word shortcoming: it is virtually impossible to use Word to produce mail-merge output containing images (such as nametags with the person's picture on each one.) The only way to do this is to purchase an $80 3rd party software utility. This Word bug has been known for many versions and is still not fixed.

I did a registry scan with ccleaner and it found a bunch of missing/broken items. I'm just wondering if its safe to delete these or "fix" them?
I'm always hesitant to mess around with the registry in case I delete something thats needed for another program.
thanks.

A:ccleaner and registry fixes

Different people have different opinions, but I would say it is probably safe to delete them. Just be sure to select Yes when it asks if you want to back up changes.

So I recently upgraded my pc and it took me ages to get my adapter to work with it. My adapter is the Powerlink Speedy 2. I have the newest drivers, 5.1.17.0, I have tried all the solutions I can find fr9m nth flushing, disabling ipv6, stopping DNS in services, checking dhcp in aervices. Trying to release and renew ip config, unis talking and reinstalling the drivers and adapter. I think there is more but I cannot remember now. Any help is apprecitaed!
I'm on my phone right now so I'm sorry if reply are a little slow.
Also, my brother and I have the same wireless adapter and his is working fine, as well as the rest of the computers and other devices on the network. This leads me to believe it may be a hardware problem. Maybe the way the adapter interfaces with the new mobo I got? The maximus hero vii. Just throwing ideas out.

A:Unidentified Network, tried all fixes I have fou d thus far

I realized I started off by saying my adapter was working the started rattling stuff off like it wasnt. It was working but suddenly stopped working or performing very badly. Really slow download/transmission speeds or just not connecting and saying "unidentified network"

Hey Members,I am unable to decipher what issues are being shown in my logfile from HijackThis. My PC has been running slower than it normally does and it seems to stall quite a bit. I don't receive any pop-ups or at least not frequently. I have ran both Norton Anti-virus (which is now expired), ewido anti-spyware, and Ad-aware 6.0 on this pc. There were a few issues cleaned up basically under each software. However, there were a few issues which were found that were unable to be deleted or quarrantined. (Such as: Trojan.Agent.qt, Downloader.Small.dxm, C:\Windows\System32/urqqqpq.dll) I've googled these and have not found a true fix for them. Also I've received the following when I ran the HijackThis scan:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 8:42:43 PM, on 8/13/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EX... Hello guys,

Grateful if anyone can assist. I would like to see where all my Win XP upgrades/fixes are stored, plus details like download/install date, file size, etc.

There is some details in the Add/Remove Programs, is this the only place I can find these details?

Thanks.
