Hi Ngarskel. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Everything else looks normal also. You are good to go.

Cheers.

When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from.
I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,
Lucy

General Info

Windows 8 pro
Laptop
Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Thank you,
Alex

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

UPDATE: A friend referred me to "recuva" yoake a recovery, of about 15 files(MSWord), I got back 2 and one was my buff(buffalo coin) logs. However later I discovered;both files will not open. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? Any chance of recovery nof these 4 and others.?

there are quite a lot of recovery programs available

I have used www.z-a-recovery.com a digital camera free recovery on the site and recovered 100 images off a CF card , so i know some of these work well

From a Elvandil Post
Here's a list. If the free ones don't see anything, forget the pay ones. I know Pandora is still around and has updated recovery software. And the other day, someone used the Disk Investigator at the bottom, which is meant to show you how much stuff is still on your drive after you thought you cleaned it, and they managed to get all their files back. Dr. Freeware is pretty new and updated not too long ago, with other useful tools, too.

Here's the list, anyway (I have more if you run out ):

Free recovery applications:

Dr. Freeware Boot CD (also has partition tool, drive cloner and imager)
DiskDigger & NTFSWalker
Pandora Recovery (Free for personal use)
Smart Data Recovery

Recuva
Restoration
Free Undelete (NTFS only)
Softperfect File Recovery
ADRC Data Recovery Tools
Undelete Plus

a few days ago, I went to the "safely remove hardware" icon and clicked "stop" on the USB Port option.

Today, when I tried to get photos onto my comp by inserting the memory chip into the SD/mini/MMC/RS and the computer wouldn't reconize it. I went to my computer and checked to see if the icons, and none were there.

I tried restarting my comp, but that didn't help.

How do I retrieve the hardware?

A:[SOLVED] Accident

Remove the SD/mini/MMC/RS docking bay and the reinsert it into your PC, this is assuming that the device you inserted the memory chip into is connected through USB.

I accidentally downloaded the incorrect student version from Digital River. I meant to go with the 64 bit but installed the 32 bit. I'd already done the install before I realized my error. I contacted Digital River and they are refunding my money for the 32 bit purchase. I have since purchased the 64 bit version but can't figure out how to install it. I'm getting an error message when I try to do the install. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm pretty confused right now.

I found that it messed up my internet browser and it would directly open to a website called "partner12.mydomainadvisor.com" Please advise what I should do to clean this up! I have changed the default from the wierd website to "google.com" but it still will default to this website "partner12..." if the domain name does not exist. i used to have norton antivirus but the subscription ran out and i did not renew...I know I should probably get something to protect my computer as well from now on. Thank you

I'm using windows XP and in network connections I accidently deleted my lan connection icon. (I know that sounds goofy) Then the recycle bin got emptied before I could restore it Since I am using DSL I obviously need this, but it will not even detect the hardware to make a new connection. I've spent hours trying to figure this out, and read everything about LAN in the microsoft help and support.
please help!

Hi all,

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Download CWShredder and click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

While surfing one of the sites I sometimes go to I got hit by one of those pop-under windows where a "warning" click windows pops up and even if you hit cancel it takes you to a site. I closed it but I guess it got me with something because I started getting IE pop up right after. I haven't been able to completely fix the problem despite a couple runs of Kaspersky so I'd turned to HJT but I need help with the log.

This 1 item is the only thing that really stands out to me.

OK so I have a little list of problems.
1. When I go to start, shutdown nothing happens (the shutdown window never comes up but explorer still stops)
2. If i am downloading something off of the internet (most recently a RVB movie in a ZIP file) it decides to randomly stop downloading.
3. When i shutdown from the task manager it does to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and does no more (so i am forced to push the button).
4. Windows automatic updates doesnt work (i have another thread for this that i started about a month ago so we wont worry about it much).

Anyone with any info/tools that could help I thank you in advance, and if you just post because you have an idea thats good too, and thank you also.

I've read that the serial key is legal for either version, 32-bit or 64-bit, but the DVD I got only has 32-bit version.

How can I get a new DVD with the 64-bit version, as I got 8 gigs of ram and I can't use them.

I bought and built the computer myself and made a mistake when I ordered Windows, and asked for 32-bit because I was scared of compatibility, and I opened and installed it already, so I can't take it back.
Help

A:Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident,need 64-bit DVD

You can try contacting whoever supplied you with the 32bit disc and explain your mistake... they may send you a new 64bit one... You may just have to bite the bullet and purchase the 64bit version...

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Quote:

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.

What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

By Accident I Unplugged My Computer while it was on and now i am worried that my movie files will be corrupted...they seem to play fine...but i am still worried....please could somebody please help by telling me if any of my files will become damaged...thank you

A:By Accident I Unplugged My Computer While It Was On

Unless the files were open and being played or saved at the time of the power loss, there should be no damage.

But remember that power can do out at any time and hard disks die without warning (quite often, these days), so all your important data must be backed up. Since you are so worried it would suggest you have no backup plan. Maybe time to get one?

As an example I backup all new data every day, to a second and totally separate hard drive, then all data to DVD every week. Every DVD is "verified" to ensure that no files are corrupt in the copy process.

I recently built the computer shown in my specs. I didn't get to joining the existing homegroup quick enough. My wife needed files from one of the homegroup laptops. Having not joined, my wife attempted it but ended up creating a new homegroup on the new build. When I go into homegroup (start menu) I don't have the option to join a homegroup, nor do I have one to leave the homegroup.

So how do I delete the new homegroup created, so I can join my established group?

A:New homegroup created by accident

What you need to do is remove each computer from the new homegroup.

Once you've done that, the homegroup will no longer exist, leaving you free to rejoin your original homegroup.

Leave a homegroup

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

Hi all, I am new here so nice to meet you.
I have annoying problem. I was reinstalling xp and I created a new partition (not very familiar with what this means), and so now my c drive has changed its name to e. I have been to windows website none of the processes work (disk management ect), the computer just wont let me either delete the new partition or change the names of the drives. I know this is touchy buisness so I dont want to proceed until I know what I am doing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to figure out what's going on here if I could see what Disk Manager says. You don't seem to have a very good grasp on disk terminology, so if you could take a screenshot of a fully expanded Disk Manager, (right click My Computer, select manage, on the right side of the screen choose disk management) then I can get back to you with much more specific advice.

Edit: To take a Screen shot, press print screen on your keyboard, and then paste into an image program such as paint. Save the resulting file, and then upload it to a site such as photobucket which will host the image for you for free. (You have to sign up for a free account first.) After uploading to an image hosting site, the site will provide you with several links that you can use to post the image here on this forum.

I was curious as Malwarebytes, MSE, and even ESET didn't find anything like this, while SUPERAntiSpyware found adware but not these, though I'm not too sure: but I brought up start task manager and looked under processes and found two that weren't under my user name (just so you know, under "users" it's just me), and after looking them up on google, learned that they might be trojans. They are: csrss.exe, and winlogon.exe. Well, that last one isn't really a trojan, but wasn't under my user name so I brought it up here just in case.

I don't want to get in trouble, as I need to do some accounting-related stuff soon n my comp., so I need to know if they are trojans or not, and if they are, how to get rid of them right away. Any ideas, and could there be more? (Again, Malwarebytes, MSE, SUPERAnti and ESET didn't pick this up)

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

Hello,

While I accomplished so much successfully setting up my computer in AHCI earlier, I now blew it all.

I had the SMART command failure error with my SSD, and received a new BIOS from my motherboard manufacturer. I applied it and "Loaded Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS as your supposed to. Stupid me, that means the motherboard activates IDE mode, but I installed Windows in AHCI mode.

So... I switched it back to AHCI after booting into IDE by accident and now I'm getting MBR Error. Is there any way to repair this? I have been trying to repair it through the Windows Install disk, using bootsec & command prompt to no avail.

Likely because where the screen pops up that says: "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair" There's no option to select. So I elected to "Load Drivers" using iaAHCI.inf [Intel ICH10R] from the Intel RST installer (I extracted it on my Laptop). It still doesn't recognize it.

Hi,
I was going to check if my external HDD needed to be defragged. I was in the wee window that asks about checking the disk for errors and decided to do that, there's always two options, one is always automatically ticked and there's another one that said something about find and attempt to restore corrupt files, that is never ticked and I never choose it, until today. All I noticed was it found 1024 files, and I clicked proceed, it processed or fixed etc and i went back to the pc after an hour and decided just to cancel as it seemed to be stuck at 2025 files checked.
Once i clicked cancel I couldn't get access to my external HDD and when I right on 'My Computer' it says it's NTFS files and is full but windows can't get access to it, i thought i'd try restoring it and i can see that out of the 1TB I have used 330GB which is what my disk was like before my mistake.
as with most people I have all my most important stuff saved there away from my C drive.
Ok, sorry for waffling on, can anyone tell me if I am able to restore my drive back to what it was (Would that have been FAT32 files?)

Once again a computer in my family has a problem and once again the problem solving has been palmed off on me!

Here's what's happened...

Windows Vista Laptp, worked fine yesterday. Today it says it has no internet connection through it's built in wireless.
After a few goes at trying to get it working we give in, and restore the system to two days ago.
The intenet connection is back! Yay - but Avira AntiVir won't update, scan (It comes up with the message 'The specific modules cannot be loaded) and the AntiVir Guard has been deactivated and it now doesn't give an option to reactive all it says is 'services' and 'help'.
Help indeed!
So I went off and tried Windows Security Centre, everything is happily green except for Malware Protection, which is RED. When you try to 'Turn on now' it does nothing, the laptop just sits there looking back at you.

I ran spybot and it kicked up 3 cookies trackers but nothing unusual. I tried HijackThis, it brings up a log but I don't know what it means.
Something is going on but I don't know what.

Is this something you guys could help me with.

Thanks in advance.

Okay, I?m running a Compaq Presario 5000 with XP Home Edition, SP3.Norton 2009, Spybot search & destroy and CCleaner.I had some strange little things happening in the last couple of days, example: When I open a window, it opens and then minimizes immediately (not normal) and does this with all newly opened windows. Some windows open, minimize and when you try to maximize them they won?t allow it and blink on the Taskbar about 10 times before finally allowing you to maximize them.Programs like Word, open up fine, but say I want to look at the desktop, minimize Word? but no; it pops right back up not allowing you to move it, which leaves you with closing it as the only option.Task Manager is doing the same thing, but worse! Open Task Manager, it opens in the maximized position and immediately goes to Taskbar, then continuously back and forth between Maximized window and Taskbar. The only way to stop it is to right click and close.CCleaner opens in maximized size and then bounces between small and large.I use WinRAR for work quite often and have the same ?bouncing? effects while downloading or uploading.I?ve run Spybot & CCleaner ? cleaned everything, then afterwards ran Norton.I?ve also run Ewido & BitDefender scans in Safe mode over night (yes, separately).Nothing seemed to help and I?m not finding any obvious viruses or Trojans.Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

A:Okay, somethings wrong, not sure what...

OK the first thing that may be wrong here is Ewido. That application was taken over by AVG some 2 + years ago. Hence that scanning engine is just too outdated. Hey,
Okay there is something seriously wrong with my laptop. A couple of days ago it started displaying error messages and windows defender started giving me trojan warnings. Like an idiot I had allowed my norton internet security subscription to expire. So then i downloaded spybot search and destroy and got a norton antivirus subscription for 12 months. I scanned my computer with both and removed all the evils within my laptop, or so it seemed. Now whats happening is that on startup i get a RunDLL error message. Random webpages open up while im browsing the internet. Spybot keeps alerting me of registry changes which i am forced to approve because they keep popping up a mile a minute if denied. Both windows defender and Norton antivirus keep alerting me to different trojans and 'threats'. However, when i scan my pc with these 2 softwares, they declare it COMPLETELY HEALTHY?!
here are some of the things that windows defender spybot and norton alert me to but are unable to detect later on:
W32.vundo
W32.fotomoto
W32.small
a number of different "trojans" (thats all norton says)
and according to norton my computer keeps doing something called WebDir activity by pinging something called everer.com .
please help!
theres something seriously wrong here.

i recently built my own computer, and have installed diablo2.
the introduction screen "blizzard" and "blizzardnorth" sound and look perfectly fine but as soon as the main choice screen comes up the sound becomes slightly choppy with a touch of static.
if i continue on to the actual game it increases from slightly to constantly and the static is fairly constant, as well as gameplay progressing to becoming unplayable from unnatural lag. all of my peripherals seem to work fine unless in diablo mode. my cd player plays cd's with no chop my mp3 player gives great sound wether on classical or hip hop and at any volume level. I have adjusted visuals as well as audio in the actual game to no avail, I down loaded the latest mouse drivers for my intellipoint imouse. and also the latest drivers for my legacy sound card,am using a gforce2 graphics accelerator,pentium4 1.5 gig cpu,20 gig hard drive,256 mb of ddr ram 350 watt power supply and a 52x cd rom drive. Is there something i should check and adjust in the computer.... clock speed or anything in the usual settings that may clarify this problem??
thanks for any time and effort you may use to assist me

Have you checked your Direct X to see if you have the most up to date version?
Also is there any other application running on your computer that may be trying to access your sound/video at the same time as the game?

I to at first had problems running D2, but I found that once I made sure I hade no un-needed programs running that most of the bugs worked out, as far as your lag problem I cant help, you much there, I use a HSP56 MicroModem and it runs everything fine.
hope some of this helps but if not maybe someone else can offer better info..

Hi. I had some previous help from this forum and thought I might try again. I posted my hijackthis log a few days ago and someone helped me with that. Now my computer is running really slow again, keeps freezing and every time I start up again, it won't let me open anything until I've run RegCure. I just keep getting an error message, but it doesn't ask to send an error report. Something else I've noticed, when the computer's running like c**p, I bring up the task manager and it says wmpnetwk.exe NETWORK SERVICE 50 and it's using anywhere from 100,000K to 200,000K mem usage to run it.I also have lost saved passwords. This is my techexpress link from pc pitstop, which teacup said to post if I needed any more help.http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=ABD9SW6L88GSPVTGI'll post the link to my past post as well in case it's at all useful.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/130207/not-sure-what-type-of-infection-i-have/Any help would be great.Thankyou.

Im not sure that this is the right forum to start this thread, so please move if appropriate. I have asked for advice on a couple different sites in the past to no avail. I go through the steps that they want done first and then post my HJT this log. Everyone says everything looks good though. I have for a long time now been convinced that I have a virus or something on my PC but neither HJT or the multiple anit-virus programs I have run turned anything much up. For some reason I still was convinced and continued trying differnt things. A cople of days ago I decided to reinstall Norton anti-virus and give that a try again. I did however stop explorer.exe from running while I installed it. I ran the scan and it actually found a virus.... W32.Alcra.D. All of the files were found here.. C:\Program Files\Ares\My Shared Folder\..... What worries me is I uninstalled this P2P program, maybe a year ago. It makes me believe my original thoughts were right. I have multiple viruses that have been here for sometime. Now Norton seems to be not running properly again and not detecting anything. So Im at a loss and I dont know if a HJT log is going to help...

A:Not Sure What Going On? Somethings Wrong

to BC r350z, You have two options as I see it: You can submit an HJT log to our expert team of analysts to receive step-by-step instructions on ridding your machine of malware. To post an HJT log please read the 'Preparation Guide' before posting to: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Hij...alysis-f22.html Alternatively you can post specifics in this forum and members will advise you ways to resolve your problems. (Please do not do this at the same time as having your log analysed.) Note: members are not permitted to advise on HJT logs in the open forums. We need to know some information about your system such as CPU type, RAM capacity, hard drive make and size, graphics card type, what version of windows, what anti-virus or anti-spyware you have and some details about your applications. Use 1 Anti-Virus program, 1 Firewall and many Anti-Spyware programs, supplemented by occasional online Anti-Virus scans. Start by following this guide: Is your Anti-virus program current and updated? If not you can download a free anti-virus program here (US Link): AVG Free When you have downloaded and installed it you need to go online to register it and update it. (It will probably prompt you to do this.) Once you have installed AVG uninstall your old Anti-Virus software because you should only have one running on your system. Do you have any anti-spyware installed? If not download and update all of the following: Ad-Aware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de/

I'm working on a dual P4 3.2GHz tower

I overclocked the GPU a little bit and blew the card up, after which my sytem fried both my spare AGP cards after fresh install of windows

I thought that it was possibly a problem with the AGP slot, so I tried an old PCI card, this worked (slowly) for about 2 hours, but as soon as WinXP updated it died again

BIOS is set up accordingly, but at WinXP splash screen I get a quick flash of blue memory dump screen, and system reboots

I'm guessing the CPU or mainboard are dead, but I haven't got the finances to experiment with new parts

If anyone has experinced a similar problem, could you let me know if/how you resolved it

Thanks
Green

For a while my computers been acting wierd. Takes a VERY long time to shut down/restart and runs poorly. I dl'ed new iTunes and AIM the other day and it went wack. iTunes installed and wont start up, but is "running" in the task manager. Uninstalled, reinstalled, no change. AIM never installed, because it just sat in limbo waiting to start - still runs fine as old version. I suspect other things arent how they should be, thanks.

Ok, I have a Dell Dimension 4400, the power supply went out a month ago and its now been replaced. After replacing it, I now get no video, only a black screen the light stays amber. When I changed the power supply the BIOS made 1 long beep which I know meant everythings on the up and up. Could the power supply burning out have gotten my video card also? I pulled the card and tried another I had and no luck. It was a card out of a PC I have for parts so It could also be bad, my concern is before the last PSU went out I smelled something burning and when i plugged in and booted it up after installing the new supply I smelled it again. Any help would be welcomed! The PC uses an AGP card, I know the slot could possibly be damaged should I just go with a PCI to be safe?

So I uninstalled Apache and then PHP and it wanted me to restart my comp so I did.

Then when Windows loads it has this wallpaper with some stuff about active desktop which I didnt have any active desktop things.

And I did a Spybot S&D scan and it came up with heaps of missing shared DLLs.

Can anyone enlighten me on whats going on?

Iv recently noticed that my PC has become extremely slow i dont know what to do
i had installed Avast then someday later it started showing a new error something like

"warning Avast system file was modified by an unauthorized program it is highly recommended that u stop running this program now"

after this i re installed Avast many times but still after few days it again starts shoing the same message and my pc slows down.

At this point i thought maybe i should try NOD 32 so i installed it but after few days it also showed a similar message about Nod system file modified something '''

Now my PC is extremely slow and this problem is still there .

I ran Hijackthis and created a logfile but its a bit Gibberish to me -----

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi everyone, small question. When you are in, say, "My Pictures" and you have your folder set to "view as a web page" and you highlight one of your picture files...you are able to get a preview of the picture over to the left side of the folder -----does anyone know what program/s gives you that preview?? I am asking because I was cleaning up my computer the other day and now I don't get previews like that anymore but just for my .jpg photos,,,it still works for .art and .bmp but no preview shows up for any .jpg pictures anymore..obviously I deleted something that shows the preview for jpg pictures. any ideas?? its really no big deal,,,just kindof curious as to what i did. I am extremely careful when I delete things from my computer...I always make sure that I know what they are and I always use uninstall if available...I did delete something called (not exactly sure of the name think it was DAO 3.5) not sure what it was but it was in my add/remove program list and I went to find files and folders and looked for it to see what it might be associated with...I couldn't find anything it went with. Maybe that was it. I am not sure. So if anyone has any idea what gives the preview or ... Read more

When you're in windows explorer click on Tools > Folder Options > File Types and go down to bmp and see what it opens with. It's probably Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Then go down to jpg and change it to open with whatever bmp uses.
