I have been using Photoshop Elements 5 on computer with Vista OS for several years now without problem. Within the last month I suddenly have not been able to open the editor with the Photoshop program. I was wondering if one of the recent Updates may be the cause. How can this be determined?
Bob S

A:Possible Security Update Problem

Welcome Bob
Lets try several things to see what the cause of the problem is
Run a full and updated anti virus scan
Download and run malwarebytes, updated and full scan
Make a clean boot to see if that helps.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the above does not help us determine the cause, try in safe mode

I have a problem with a security update for windows XP. It's an update for Internet Explorer 6 that just won't install, it fails every time (without any additional information). It pops back in the list even though I try to ignore it.

I don't care much for the update since I use Mozilla as a browser, but how do I completely remove the update? It is first in the list of automatical updates som all following updates will also fail if I don't install them manually.

Hello, yesterday, I downloaded a security patch for Microsoft Virtual Machine (I am running IE 5.5 on Microsoft ME) after discovering a virus on my computer, according to the removal instructions by McAfee. Along with it, some other IE updates were downloaded and when my computer rebooted, none of my applications loaded nor did anything work. The error reads "your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." IE also displays an error, "inetcpl.cpl" If anybody has any ideas, please let me know!

Also, if you know how to uninstall those updates, please let me know!

The new security update made my network look like it doesn't have any connection, but it really does and it made my windows media player all weird, when I play videos and music it says, "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct." How do I fix these?

I have a similar problem regarding this update KB981852, only for Windows Vista.

I tried to install the update along with a couple of optional updates. It kept telling me the update was successful for KB981852, but not for the optional updates, then when I clicked "check for updates", KB981852 once again appeared as an important update. I then reviewed my update history and it seems that my computer has downloaded and installed KB981852 successfully 7 times between the 12 and 16 August.

Yet still it shows in the update list as an important (required) update...

This makes me wonder whether there is an issue with the KB981852 updates...?

I installed the last set of security updates with no problems. Everything seems to be ok. 2 days after the installation I tried to use a game that i am addicted to called Zuma. I have the licensed version of this game and it has up to now worked fine with no problems on Vista Home Premium.

Once starting the game (I have it set for full screen mode) it starts to load- I get a black screen which is normal with an the vista "hour glass circle"- I can hear the music playing and then it loads in the left hand corner of the screen as a square box all jibberish. It is like you ran watercolor all over the game, and you cannot distinguish anything at all. Worse the only way to shut it down (alt cont delete doesn't do it) is to click on the windows icon key on the keyboard and then kill it in processor.

I tried uninstalling it- rebooting- reinstalling it. It installs fine with no problems but i get the same exact problem again.

I have no idea what one of the security updates did and no idea which one it could be and I would hate to uninstall all of them then start all over again.

Got any ideas? All the other games I have work fine- i tested them

A:One funny problem after Security update

Use any register cleaner and try again or install a program like Total Uninstall 4 to remove the game, then install the game again.

P.S. I think we really need SP1.....two more weeks i hope.

Hello, I'm having a big problem with a security update from Microsoft. I'm on a Windows Vista OS, SP 1. The update is called: Microsoft Works 8 KB959487
It gives me an error code of 646. I've retried and retried to get this to go in and it won't. What can I do? Because right now it wants me to install it and it won't go in. I've been able to get other installations in updates from Microsoft, but this one takes the cake. If I get ready to shut the computer down right now, it will say that the installation took and the Microsoft security feature comes right back up again, with the same thing. I've already checked to see if it's downloaded before to see if I'm in a loop and it's not in my computer files. I'm stuck. Please help.
Thank you for your kind assistance.

Hi,

I received 1 security update (KB2539636) and 2 other updates (KB2468871 & KB2533523) for .Net framework 4 yesterday and all 3 keep failing. I ended up on a 'support' page after searching for solutions and here's how it went:

First I tried the Microsoft 'Fixit' tool but that didn't work.

I then tried using the .Net removal utility tool to remove all versions of .NET and then reloaded step by step but then had a problem with service pack 1.1 which wouldn't load no matter what I did.

I ended up having to do a system restore and from there tried a 'repair' on all versions via programmes and features uninstall / repair etc. and then tried to install updates again but still no joy.

I tried disabling my Kaspersky security software and tried again.

In the end I uninstalled version 4 but now have it waiting as an 'important' update to be downloaded - which will start the whole thing off all over again...

Can anyone suggest anything please.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Jay

A couple days ago, my computer was hit by a bug late at night. I managed to get rid of that specific bug (and a few more besides) with SuperAntiSpyware, but now I'm left with a second problem. For reasons unknown, the Automatic Updates are registering as having been turned off in Windows Security Center. When I attempt to turn them back on in there, I receive a message saying that I have to do so in the Automatic Updates tab under System. I follow those same instructions, and I still find myself with the Automatic Updates turned off.

Another apparent consequence of this is that my speakers are apparently no longer working. The sound is turned on, and whatever is causing this is not affecting my headphones, but no sound is coming from the speakers.

I have yet to run a sweep with AVG or with MalwareBytes, and am currently running my third scan with SuperAntiSpyware, but I would appreciate any assistance on these matters.

About a month ago I started having problems with updating in my laptop (HP Presario C500). It is installed with XP sp2.

It started with not being able to update my AVG 7.5 free edition (I eventually replaced it with Avast which functions OK). Then I noticed Spyware Terminator was also disabled. And later it turns out that Windows Update has been disfunctional for about a month - without notifying me!

I think this must be a malware issue --- but I have done a full scan with Avast and Terminator, and have run AGV Virus Remover, but none of them find anything.

I contacted MS Support, but nothing they have suggested has worked. So I was wondering if anyone have any suggestions what I can do now?

Thanks in advance for your time and effort in answering this question.

Security download KB929969 (support.microsoft.com) will not install on my PC because it is "not a valid Win32 application." My access to the internet is via Ethernet 10/100 NIC card and cable connection.

Also, the yellow icon for "Windows is dowloading updates" shows up in my task bar, but nothing happens. I have performed disk cleanup/defrag, but to no avail. I am using a very good ISS provided by my ISP, therefore, not needing the Windows firewall. No probls with viruses, etc. I reviewed my update history on the Windows Update site and show no updates since Feb. 2008 (with the exception of the above-mentioned security patch).

My computer skills are between that of "beginner" and "intermediate" (depending on how much of a senior-day I'm having).

I thank anyone who reads this for their time, consideration and assistance.

Peace Out.

I'm having a very strange problem with my user account on Vista Home Premium after I just installed the latest security update (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067). My computer restarted after installing and when it came back up and I logged in it acted as if it was the first time I had ever logged in (default desktop background, program settings completely reset, and my graphics drivers seem a bit wonky). It seems as if it has "forgotten" about my old user account.
If I go to C:/Users/MyName there's still all my old data there, but the data for the account I'm logged into (despite the fact that it claims it's the "MyName" account), is being read from C:/Users/TEMP

Also, if I log out and try to log back into the "MyName" account, it says "User services could not log in" or something to that effect and goes back to the login screen. Then I can't log back in until I restart the computer completely.

Does anyone have any idea how I could point Windows in the right direction and get my old user settings back? This is really frustrating and I couldn't find anything about it on the Windows support site,
Thanks

A:User Account Problem after Security Update

Okay, kind of getting somewhere. When I log on in Safe Mode there's a pop-up bubble on log-in that says "Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile." I've checked the Event Viewer and under the error entry for the log-on attempts it says:
"Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified. "

Which is strange because I'm not logging in over a network or anything like that. It would seem like my user account is corrupted. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I would really rather not have to re-install Vista.

Hello,

My Windows 7 home destktop PC recently developed these problems:

1. Sluggish performance by Google Chrome, freezing, causing occasional crashes to blue screen;
2. Sluggish loading of desktop upon startup, very slow, sometimes failed opening of Windows Explorer;
3. Eventually Chrome stopped working - when launched, it would try unsuccessfully to load any URL; will keep trying and preventing me from opening/running anything else on the machine; eventually I'd need to shut down using the power switch. Repeated tries yielded the same result - I clean un-installed Chrome, cleaned registry, restarted, re-installed Chrome, nothing worked. Each time I'd try running Chrome, my machine essentially just froze up while Chrome tried to access the home page I'd always had it bring up upon launch.

4. I did several scans for malware using MalwareBytes Antimalware, eSET, MS Security Essentials, with no threats detected in all cases.

5. I went on SpywareInfoForum.com to seek help. I was given extensive instructions on how to scan, clean, try many things with the machine, including having it do a clean boot, to no avail. To make a long story short, I'm currently running the machine each time with a clean boot, but still the problem with Chrome remains.

6. During the investigation of this problem with Chrome I checked Windows Update and it told me I had 58 critical updates I hadn't applied. So I tried doing that, but eventually found out that the downloa... Read more

A:Windows Update Excruciatingly Slow, Google Chrome Compatibility Problem

Update: I have now been able to get my Windows 7 fully updated. This is from reading and following instructions from this page:

http://www.howtogeek.com/255435/how-to-update-windows-7-all-at-once-with-microsofts-convenience-rollup/

I downloaded the MS convenience rollup package, ran that, it installed a bunch of updates all the way up to May 2016. I then used Windows Update to do the remaining patches, several at a time, until the last batch, when I did about 20, 25 of them, and this time, they downloaded and installed fairly quickly.

So great, I got that one problem solved. But then Google Chrome is still not behaving normally on my clean (and still booting clean), fully updated Windows 7. I still have to run it in Vista compatibility mode, otherwise it will hang on launch, trying over and over to load a starting page, without success. And it can't get to any other page either, eventually just causing me to close or kill it with the Task Manager.

Help! Anyone here have any idea how I should troubleshoot and fix this ongoing problem?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Hello!

I tried getting help for this from the Adobe forum however the person there who helped me didn't even understand what the heck I was telling him so I need help from you guys.

It all started with trying to update my Flash Player. The update program alerted me to the presence of a new update but claimed the need for administrative privilege to execute.

This is unprecedented. In my use of a "guest" account in my copy of Windows Home Premium X64 I have always been able to install programs without administrative privilege.

So I attempted to find the file responsible for these updates but could not (so as to elevate the process).

I downloaded the installer again and ran it as admin. It still failed.

I got tipped off to an offline installer that has everything in it and tried running that as admin. It still claims "process not elevated".

I tried installing the Bing desktop. I ran as admin. It claims to not have admin privilege.

Apparently I must find a way to change accounts to full administrator mode but found out that Windows Vista and newer "hide" this account.

I found the way to enable it.

You bring up a command prompt with admin privilege and type "net user administrator /active:yes".

NOW WINDOWS TELLS ME THAT MY ADMIN PRIVILEGE EXECUTION OF CMD.EXE LACKS ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGE!!!!!!!!

Without resolution this problem will end up forcing me to buy Windows 8, an operating system I want to avoid if at all possible.

Something seems to prevent me from downloading it on this specific computer, it appears that the OS (windows 7) is doing this.

Hello,

As this Forum and the experts have been helpful in the past, I've decided to seek some help once again.

Firstly, my computer is very slow. I don't even have that much files or programs running but each time I use my computer it seems to get slower and slower. I don't know if this is attributed to the recent problems I have been experiencing but it could be interrelated.

Secondly, I am experiencing extremely frequent pop-ups from something called XP Security Tool. I don't even remember downloading this software?! The messages pop-up every few seconds, possibly with the view to enticing me to purchase some software. The messages take up things like ''Security Breach'', ''Threats Detected'', ''System Integrity Threats'', ''Virus Alerts'', ''Malware Intrusion!'', ''Tracking software found!'', ''Severe System Damage'' among others. It also seems to complicate matters for Windows Defender and a lot of my other programs which are no longer opening.

Please help..

Kind Regards,
Snake

I hope youcan help me sort out at least 2 issues withmy PC.
1. I keep on getting messages from security.monitor on Skype that I have a problem with my windows security. This is a fairly recent problem ie about 3 weeks old.
2. Prior to this my PC regularly locks up, including skype. Internet Explorer can be the worst culprit. and the CPU usage percentage shoots up to 100% even when there are no applications running... The only way out is to restart the PC..

The PC is new ( 6 months old) .. and has Windows XP. I am running Norton security, spywarebot ( the paid for version.. although I did remove it yesterday.. thinking that was causing some issues), plus the free versions of avg 7.5, avg rootkitfree, and spyware doctor.. all of which tell me that everything is ok. I have 67 processes running...

I also end up with cascading windows.. when i try to move a window out of the way .. similar to the way cards fill up the screen on successful completion of a card game !

G'day,
Yesterday evening, 14 Dec., when shutting down the computer, 10 updates were received. This morning, 15 Dec., when booting up for the first time, I was presented with the green screen that said "Preparing to Configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." It has been sitting there like that for over an hour and a half. I think something may have gone wrong. What should I do? Please advise. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, i5 3.4 Ghz, 8Gb RAM.

A:Win 7 update problem. Computer will not start.

A great christmas present from Microsoft it seems.

I have the same kind of problem as you pivo11. I was just installing the same updates on my PC, the system lost connection to the monitor and it flashed the red light for hard drive. I waited for some moments but it seemed the system was stuck. So I did a hard reboot. Now my system won't even give me any beeps. If I turn it on hard drive light will flicker and fans start but nothing happens.

Any ideas what has caused this and what should be done?

Edit: Windows 7 Hope Premium 64bit

Edit 2: Well, I disconnected all devices except the keyboard and let it run for a little longer and suddenly the computer posted and booted again. Installed the updates with no problem and seems to be working... weird.

Recently I have found that my PC is running very slowly. It takes an age to open and run any programs. I am not aware of having installed anything new which might have caused this problem. I ran HighJackThis and the results are attached to this message. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out with this one.

Thank you

Might be easier if you just post the log file results here. (Not complaining, some would rather read it than download it). I am not learned enough in this yet to help you, but someone will come along that can...

I just downloaded hijackthis and I'm going to post my log file, hoping that someone can help me figure out why my computer is running so slow. The steps I've taken to speed up my computer was format my computer entirely. That means, I deleted absolutely everything, even Windows, and then put Windows back on my computer using CDs I got when I bought the computer. However, I backed about 8 GB of stuff up and put it back onto my computer after I formatted it. I don't know if any of the files I backed up were infected. I backed up stuff like Warcraft 3 and my parent's documents files and stuff like that. The reason I formatted my computer in the first place is because it was running slow, and it is still running slow now.Can you see any suspicious files in this log? Thank you very much for the help, I really really appreciate it.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 2:49:26 AM, on 12/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Progra... A:Slow computer, not sure what the problem is

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hey!
I used this site before with great results. My computer has been running great until recently.I scanned with AD-Aware Se and Super Anti-Spyware,and also ran a scan with my McAfee virus scan. The McAfee scan picked up nothing, and I got rid of everything the other two found. The problem is my computer is running way slower than ever before.I also deleted a lot of things not being used.I make sure to empty all the emails in the trash and delete the temp internet files too.I had Hijackthis but don't now for some reason.Any suggestions?
Thank you!!

A:Problem With A Slow Computer

hi realgem36

can you please be a bit more specific in "slow"? as in, slow in general? just startup? just a few programs that run slow? intermittently runs slow then fast etc?

what kind of hardware do you have? how old is the machine? have you added any new hardware? installed any new programs/drivers/"cleaners"?

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of fixes as soon as they are posted.

I notice that you have two anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!!
Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall one of them.

Check and see if you have the 811493 hotfix from MS in your add/remove programs.
If so try deleting it and see if things speed up.

Hi, My computer has been running slowly. I have been trying to determine the problem. One thing I have found different from my work's computer is that WMI doesn't open when clicked in Computer Management - just states what it does. I have restored all the missing files and re-registered them, but still no joy. Maybe my HJT log file will help one of you to determine what the trouble could be:

I did the trend micro online virus scan, I also downloaded the free avg computer virus scan and ran it. two minor trojans were found and deleted. I ran adaware, spybot search and destroy, registry mechanic, And now am going to post my hijackthis log.

First, IE 7 will not load windows update, any flash, and will not let me click links or download most things. Also, when I click print or do the shortcut, nothing happens. In firefox, everything works fine. Also, when trying to open the help and support service from the start menu, nothing happens. In IE 7 I have also done a full setting reset. While opening IE 7, the "change your settings welcome screen" would just load completely blue. Also ran msconfig for any ususual start up items.

Also, forgot to mention. Used CCleaner too.

some items on trend micro said they could not be removed, and needed to be tackled manually. But when I used AVG I'm sure it got them. Also, the computer will not shut down tidely. By this I mean, If i click "start" shutdown, it takes about 5 min for the shutdown restart hibernate menu to appear. When I try to search on my computer, that window is blank also. I have tried shutting down services and background applications before shutting down also.

thanks again!
Rob

A:Problem With Slow Running Computer

This could be caused by many things, which I will just list some of the more obvious:
1. Adware invasion
2. Highly fragmented hard drive
3. Running too many programs/applications at once (or at start-up)
4. Recently installing an application that is hogging computer resources

Have you considered any of these?

Hi,

I have a windows98(not SE), pc with 64 mb of memory and an old GenuineIntel pentium processor, probably not very fast to today's standards but anyways it does the job. Originally had 34mb but i upgraded it to 64mb as i saw that it was getting slow. At first the PC was running great now it seems like it has no memory at all. It is infested with popups, BHOs and toolbars and unknown applications and i think its all spyware!!!Please help me get rid of it.I have some old version of adaware and S&D in it but it seems to be useless against the real threat. I'm not sure what i should first to get rid of all of it...I'll be very grateful if anyone could help me

thank you

Hi, our computer is getting sluggish lately, and seems to have an increase of spyware and virus problems. We use norton antivirus, windows firewall, ad-aware and spybot s&d. The programs seem to get rid of what they detect in the scan, but things just keep coming and aren't getting blocked. I'm hoping to post a hijak this log and see what y'all think, I don't know if it's very bad. I used the HT analyzer and this is what I got:

A:computer getting slow, spyware problem?

Hello watkins and welcome to TSF,

I'm not seeing much here.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/W.../bridge-c18.cab

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer
Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click On 'Scan Now'
Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Have you unchecked/disabled items from the Startup Folder ... Read more

Hello.

A friend of mine recommended to look for some help on this forum.

I am using a Dell netbook.

Windows 7 Starter. Computer is roughly 2 years old.

The problem is when I start up the Netbook it takes roughly 25 minutes to get going.

Then any browser hangs and freezes. Impossible to use the interent like this.

I have tried the following from reading online help forums, but the problem is still the same.

I installed Malawarebytes anti malaware and did a full system scan. No threats found.

Running AVG up to date.

Ran a Eusing registry cleaner to fix errors.

Can anyone offer some further advice. After 25-30 minutes from cpu running at 100% it settles back to 59% but still very slow.

thanks for any help offered.

Please post the complete laptop model next time. Can you check if the laptop comes with a hardware diagnostic utility  by pressing the default function keys (Esc, F2) on early bootup and try running the short and long test? If the short test posted failed, skip the long test as this would confirm that the drive is not reliable anymore. Make sure you have also kept a recent backup of your documents but if its impossible to do this in Windows try using this.

My computer has been REALLY slow to boot, open files (even small word documents), etc.
When I check the task manager the DiscStreamHub.exe is taking up usually 50% of my CPU.
I have an HP Media Center Edition 2005 and someone mentioned that the discstreamhub is just for downloading games (and I don't want to do that).
Should I get rid of it? If I do, can I get it back if I want it back?

Thank you!

A:Slow computer, is discstreamhub.exe the problem?

This program is usually installed by the PC manufacturer (HP) and is commonly known as "crapware." Unless you are actively using it's features (downloading games, which you say you aren't) you can uninstall the program by using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet. I ought to be listed there as DISCover My Games or something similar. While you're at it you might as well uninstall any other crapware that HP preinstalls on their computers. There's a neat, free program called PC Decrapifier that may lend itself to removing most of the crapware in one fell swoop.

Hi I just finished troubleshooting a couple days with the Hijackthis log people and they believe the slow down in my computer is not malware related.

"You're still coming up clean. At this juncture, I would have to summise that your issues arent malware related.

Please start a thread at the Windows XP forum so that the experts there may assist in troubleshooting the problem."

A couple days ago my computer just started slowing down a lot, now it is a little bit better I can actually do stuff but it still stalls a lot like when I play music or watch movies. It takes about 10 minutes to boot up. Performance under task manager is frequently hovering about 70%. Any advice you guys can give me on how to fix this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,So over the past month I've been having trouble with my computer being annoyingly slow in a way that makes doing work on it sometimes infuriating and watching videos straight-through impossible. When I watch a video online (for example, on hulu) usually the first few minutes are fine, and then it starts to lag a little bit or be jerky, and if I check the task manager, the CPU is shooting up to 100% very often. But this isn't particular to flash videos; I've had this happen when listening to iTunes and working in microsoft word, when I'm just surfing the web, etc, and every time, the CPU is shooting up to 100%, but it's never any one particular process that is always doing this -- it could be Chrome, or iTunes, or Word. My computer is an older laptop (Acer Travelmate 2420) but it didn't start acting this way until about a month ago, and so when it first started I actually did a repair reinstall of windows xp and that actually fixed one problem I had been having (when I used to start up, it would hang with just desktop wallpaper and no icons for a good two minutes without doing anything, before loading the rest of the desktop and explorer). I'm posting my HijackThis log below. I don't think this is a driver problem because my device manager shows no conflicts and I've tried updating my drivers, but I honestly have no idea how to fix this. I have 2 GB of RAM (as far as I can update this laptop), a new hard drive, and a 1.5 GHz processor (si... Read more

My Computer had started slowing down and after copying some files from CD to hard drive, i noticed that an infection occurred. I had scanned the CD with AVG before copying the files and no virus was detectted. My flash disk also got infected. Scanning it on another computer with MacAfee Enterprise 8.0, the virus W32\RJump.worm and W32\Autorun.worm.j were found and the files deleted. My flash disk is now clean.

My computer is however still infected.
1. The time appearing on the toolbar on the bottom right of the screen dissapeared as well as the Control Panel and Run... options that are normally seen when you click Programs.
2. When you try to access Sytem Restore, the system informs you that you have no access and to contact group administrator yet i am logged on as the administrator.
3. I tried to run vcleaner.exe by AVG but the process aborts midway with the window just closing.

How can i resolve this problem?

Hey guys,

My computer has been running slow for quite a while now, and I can't find a reason at all. I cleaned the inside of my tower and went through most of the cleaning steps you all recommend in that post except for the one step that required me to have a Xp Sp3 startup disk. Like I said I don't know the cause, but I was wondering if someone could help me out to get it running how it was? It'd be really appreciated. It used to be a somewhat fast computer, but now I can't even stream a small video on youtube without major lag..this makes me think that it could be caused by some kind of virus. It also runs even slower than it's usual slow speed right after it has been turned on. It takes about 15 minutes to turn on and begin to run "normally".

anyway, thanks!

Charles

A:Slow Computer - Cannot find a problem.

Hy
my name is Daniel and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Please read and follow these instructions carefully. We do not want it to fix anything yet (if found), we need to see a report first.

Hi
2 days ago my computer became frustratingly slow. I believe it happened after I ran combofix.exe. I have use it many times and found it very useful without problems, I can show you the log if it is necessary.
So far I have:
Used Crap Cleaner, the reg cleanup tool
Gone into safe mode and did a full AVG scan. which came out with a Trojan downloader, from Limewire and a crack for a game. Both were cleaned up.
Problems I have encountered:
Computer has become extremely slow, Windows loading is actually taking longer.
The tray takes around 10 times longer to load.
Many programs become unresponsive and slow when I switch between them, or exit a program, or startup a new one
-none of these things have happened before 2 days ago
*I just thought I'd note, I play online games and opening them and getting into them is much slower but once I'm in them everything is fine

This computer is an antique, so it has always been a bit slower than I am accustomed to, but it has gotten slower than before.  I keep the programs to a minimum, and do regular spyware/adware removal as well as regular maintenance.  Recently, however, my antivirus stopped working.  Attempts to get it to work again brought up an error message (see photo) and working with Avast support elicited the information that there was a problem with my registry.
Have attached some screen shots that I am hoping will help in case I haven't described the issues well enough:

A:Computer very slow, possible registry problem

I hope you didn't pay for avast's third party support and let them take control of the computer. The first thing they do is tell you there are problems in the registry.

The first problem is you are still running XP SP2. You should update that to SP3. I would download SP3.

Before installing it I would clean the computer of all temp files, defrag the disk and then uninstall avast.

Too clean the computer of temp files, click start > Run and type %temp% . Do this for each account on the computer. If you do not have it, install CCleaner and do a cleanup. Do not use the registry cleaner.

If you updated to the latest version of avast which is 2015 that could be a problem too.

After installing SP3 you will have quite a few security updates to download.

Having SP2 on the computer opens you up to all kinds of security problems. In fact, support for XP has ended and no additional security updates will be given.

My computer (windows xp) started to become quite slow. I have Mcafee installed and I had seen no signs of a virus, etc. I deleted a number of files to free up some space on the c drive, I compressed old files, ran defrag, and a registry cleaner. It helped somewhat.

After doing all of this I got a strange pop-up while browsing a site. The pop-up had four panes and it had ron/ronz.php in the URL. Before starting the processes listed above I had noticed listings in my browser history for sites I had not visited.

Apparently unwisely I went ahead and ran combofix. Then I ran a Mcafee scan and it detected Tool-NirCmd.

What should I do from here?

Thanks for any suggestions.

My computer has been running very slowly. Startup is very slow. One of the programs running is alcxmntr.exe, and I've read on some forums that he should be removed. I recently downloaded HijackThis to remove him. In the log, I've also noticed other ones I need to fix, but I've been adviced to let others look at the log before I attempt to fix anything. I know at least three I should remove. Can anyone advice me on which to fix?

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

Hello All.

I am writing about a windows activation / update problem that has developed on my wife's computer. I started noticing the activation notices several months ago but am just now getting around to dealing with them. Simultaneously it seems, the windows update process stopped working as well. This system has been running fat, dumb, and happy for a number of years without major issues. So I find myself here and hoping that someone can help me.

I have run MalwareBytes, SuperAntiVirus, and Norton Internet security trying to find any indication of some type of infection. All came up with nothing other than some tracking cookies. I have also used Norton Utilities to scan for registry errors and it found some items which I allowed it to correct. But the end result is that I still have the problem.

My wife usually uses this system and I am rarely on it unless there is a problem. The default browser is Chrome. It is an older Dell system running a Core2 Duo 32 bit processor. Works fine for her and what she needs. Also, I have the hard drives running in a RAID 1 configuration using the motherboard's Intel RAID manager. About 1/2 of the disk space is unused and 4 GB Ram (3 usable obviously) on this system. Also, if it is relevant, this system started life as an XP system that I did a clean install on several years ago to get it to Win 7.

Anytime I try running Windows Update / Check for updates, it tells me that it is not running. I have gone through seve... Read more

Okay so yesterday I decided to restart my computer at some point for no real reason and when it started back up everything was running extremely slow, since then simple tasks such as opening Firefox are a problem. I've ran multiple virus scans all of which have shown nothing. No weird processes running, Temps are fine.. I have reinstalled my GPU drivers with no success. Another thing which I find odd is that if I boot in safe mode everything runs fine, not a problem at all. Another thing which I found odd is that Dxdiag is showing my processor as n/a.

My specs are:
i7-950
GTX 460
6GB DDR3 RAM
Running Windows 7 64bit.

I'd appreciate any help to try and get this sorted, Thanks.

Yesterday I must have picked up some type of malware as anytime I use google (in either IE8 or Firefox) it redirects me to advertising sites. When I type in the address of a specific page I get the "not connected to the internet" message. I ran MBAM and came back with 9 identified files. I removed these files but am still having issues. It also seems to have disabled my Avast anti-virus service, and I can only run MBAM off of a memory stick.

I have pasted the Highjackthis log, however I was having trouble running the program so I had to run it out of safemode (I do not know if this makes a difference). I have also included the files from dds, I tried to run GMER but when it was finished scanning it automatically shut-down and did not give me the chance to save a file.

I am currently running Windows XP, and have Zonealarm & Avast as protection. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello,

Computer is extremely slow to start... sometimes it can take 15-20 minutes. Web pages are slow to open, each time "waiting for cache" shows up in the bottom left hand side of screen. I've run ccleaner and malwarebytes a few times and nothing seems to be detected to correct the problem. I tried restoring back to before it all started and that hasn't corrected the issue.

Not sure what other info you need, but below is the Farbar FRST.txt log and I've attached the Addition.txt file.

On Spybot it shows on the system startup Value: BM436fe0ec and command line: Rundll32.exe "C:/WINDOWS/system32/peuxtapq.dll",s. hopefully this can be some help.

I keep getting a shortcut problem that says this

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Adobe Reader Speed Launch.Ink.disabled'
refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource
is unavailable, and then try again.

The error keeps popping up every few minutes, and continues to do so even if the message is allready displayed. I don't know why it's doing this, or how to solve it.

My computer is also running pretty slow once again, so I restart it and everything seems to be ok for a little bit, then it will act weird again.

If anyone could help me figure these out and fix them, I would appreciate it.

Thanks In Advance

A:Shortcut Problem And Slow Running Computer

What version of Adobe Acrobat/ Reader do you have?
If it's one of the latest versions (>5.0) see if you can find some configuration settings to turn off Speed Launch. I uninstalled version 6 because of all the unneccessary internet linked contorsions it wanted to go through every time I tried to open a document, so I can't tell you where to find the settings.

If it's a serious problem for you uninstall the app entirely while you search for the configuration setting.

Hi all I have a Hp pavilion Laptop windows 8.1 64 bit. For some reason when it updated Bios flash and then the new flash player all of a sudden the computer is slower the web pages load slower and streaming is extremely slow or it will say pages timed out. It keeps doing that saying pages have times out.

I am not sure what is happening. I tried to scan in the security settings the trouble shooter but nothing. I am not sure exactly what to do at this point.

The wireless says it is working but wow it is slow to load pages. Weird because the wireless has been working great and there is nothing wrong with the wireless router. So I am having to reset or trouble shoot the wireless card.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I posted this elsewhere on the site and was referred to post it here instead, so hopefully this is the right place. My son's computer is severely messed up and I need some help. I don't know a great deal about computers, but knew enough to realize I needed help with this. I pasted my Hijackthis log below, but essentially the problem is that immediately after logging in on the computer, which runs Windowns XP, the computer slows to a crawl and takes a very long time to accomplish anything. Even just clicking on the start menu takes a few minutes before that can be brought up, and sometimes it won't even be able to do anything at all. Please Help. I had to do the hijackthis in safe mode, because regular mode won't accomplish anything, hopefully this doesn't matter.

A:Really slow computer problem with a Hijackthis log included

Since the Hijackthis log didn't seem to help anyone help me figure this one out, does anyone have any ideas on how to help me solve this one? I ran a diagnostic test on my AccessIBM part ofthe computer, and it said my problem involved the computer's memory. Any possible suggestions based on that and the other symptoms described above? Please help!

Hello.. not a computer expert here at all..
While there are other sites( MSN) that also are slow loading I will just go with Yahoo Sports.. It is getting slower and slower to load and to switch pages.. 30 seconds and more.. some complete hang ups.. notices that internet explorer had to close and re open the web page.. try to refresh and it might just throw a white blank screen up until you refresh again or close out and start over.. oh and the occasional script error
Now most sites and browsing is ok. but Yahoo... MSN.. and occasionally others are just not right..

 Any ideas.. Thanks in advance..

Oh and I called Microsoft about this and had a long wait time so they took my number and said I would get a call back in 226 minutes... LOL... the call is now 125 minutes late so I suspect I will not be getting help from them..

Hello basicman and welcome to BleepingComputer.Slow right click is commonly associated with a bad or misbehaving context menu handler. Please review the information on the page at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm. I personally had this problem related to a network reference. Just yesterday, I got 3 Blue Screens of Death. I didn't write down the error code or whatever because I forgot about it. When I finally got to get to my desktop, I did a system restore which got rid of the BSOD but now my computer is running super slow.

I installed the Dell Driver repair and did that. I'm guessing it could be improperly installed programs, but I haven't installed any programs in a while, just some firefox plugins. I used CCleaner to find problems in the registry. I've tried a lot, but nothing seems to be working. I even did a full system virus scan last night... nothing came up.

I just want to find the problem and fix it. Is there any way to do that? I'm hoping you guys can help, I honestly don't know what the problem is. I don't know if a HJT log will do any good because I'm not very familiar with what it does, but if you need one, just ask.

Please and thank you!

My computer has been processing everything much slower during the past few months and during the past two weeks, the problem has become unbearable. I suspect that spyware is the problem. Until yesterday, it was taking 1-2 minutes to start up applications such as MS Outlook, Internet using Firefox or Internet Explorer, MS Word and MS Excel. Once these applications are open, it takes an excessive amount of time to complete the simplest operations. Months ago the computer was operating much faster.

I am running Windows XP operating system and have the following anti-spyware programs: Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search & Destroy, CWShredder and Spyware Doctor. Also running Norton Internet Security 2006 for anti-virus.

I have completed all five steps prior to running HiJackThis program. While running the anti-spyware in Safe Mode, three or four spyware items were found, including two Trojans. Since they were deleted yesterday, my computer?s speed has increased, but still is much slower than it operated a few months ago.

Please provide assistance to eliminate the spyware and viruses as well as suggestions to prevent this from occurring in the future.

Attached is the output from HiJackThis.

A:Computer Runs Slow - Spyware Problem?

Welcome to TSF.

You might have too many programs running there causing the slowdown. Also for Spyware Doctor and SpywareDetector, did you buy those yet? If you bought both already, disable one of them from starting up. If you didn't buy either of them yet, uninstall both of them.

Let's try disabling some other programs from startup to see if it helps:

Before you do anything else, create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Restart and see if it's any better now.

Hi,

I had this thing yesterday night in my computer "[email protected]". What I did first was to disable System Restore. Then, if I recall correctly, I turned off my computer, because I was going to bed and decided to do the fixing tomorrow. I couldn't sleep, so I turned on my computer, typed my password in and then I just couldn't do anything. If I would hovered the arrow over "Start", it would turn into the time thing.

The only way to turn my computer off was to hit the button. I turned my computer on for three or four times and the same thing would happen. I couldn't use anything. Then for some reason, I decided to disconnect the Ethernet cable from my computer and then next time I turned my computer on, it worked. I could use all the programs. I decided to go to sleep since it was really late.

Next morning, I followed all of the instructions from this website http://www.precisesecurity.com/adware-spy/aw-tswm.htm to remove the trojanspy. I connected my computer to the internet before turning it on, when I was done fixing the trojan thing and the same thing happened. The stupid ads from the trojanspy would not appear anymore, but I just couldn't use my computer when the ethernet cable is connected to my computer. I click on my programs and it freezes. I turn my computer off, disconnect the ethernet cable, turn the computer back on again and it works fine.

Thank you for your help!
