Xp Labtop Is In Bad Shape

Q: Xp Labtop Is In Bad Shape

My dad labtop is in pretty bad shape and it's hard enough just to get HJT or anything onto the computer, then running them properly is another story. It's an Accer, XP. Don't think you need anything. It's almost impossible to work with. There's about 3 anti-virus's on it. Not sure if there even real ones or false ones he downloaded from the virus.- Safe mode's not working, just gives a list of drivers and crap.- It's just constantly rebooting explorer I believe every couple a seconds. Lots of popups saying "Your computer is probably infected, click yes to download software to remove it."- Can't right click without the restarting effect- Could only manage an older version on HJT that doesn't need to be installed- I can't killbox the files from system32I can't even open notepad or open any folder.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Acer\Empowering Technology\ePerformance\MemCheck.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exeC:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpSvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackupst.exeC:\Acer\Empowering Technology\ePower\ePower_DMC.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\Program Files\WinAntivirusPro3.8\WinAntivirusPro.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exeC:\Documents and Settings\Alexander\Desktop\HiJackThis_v2.exeC:\Documents and Settings\Alexander\Desktop\HiJackThis_v2.exeC:\WINDOWS\explorer.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\verclsid.exeR0 - Well I have been asked to post HJT log in this forum.
PROBLEM : My PC is running very very Slow. My system sometimes says "DISK ERROR" and Windows does not start. And it is taking tons of time to run an application. I was unable to generate HJT log in "Normal mode". Whenever I try to do a scan of HJT in NORMAL MODE my system restarts before the scan is complete. SO I did HJT scan in Safe mode. It took almost 1 hour to get this log. Here is the log:

Hello all,

This is my first time using these forums. However, I have had the pleasure of using BC's site for finding processes and other info. I really appreciate this community and everyone's help. I look forward to actively contributing, helping, and learning as well.

Attached is a DSS log file (MAIN.txt & EXTRA.txt). Some of the problems might already be resolved since the computer I'm working on doesn't have internet so I'm transferring the logs via flash drive and I've already installed Avast, did a boot scan and delete, ran Adaware 08 and SuperAntiSpyware on Smart scans since the computer would lock up with full scans.

|I appreciate any responses.

Thank you

It also is infected with 444.470 virus that I do not know how to get rid of as well as portsv.exe ?

Hello, I was sent here by the virus and malware forum after it was noticed that my logs showed some errors.

Symptoms include:
chkdsk runs at every startup, it doesn't find anything.
Cannot update to windows vista sp1.
occasionally random services fail, like superfetch or host processing

I have attached the logs I sent to the malware forum because they contain all the errors. (they are a .txt because it says the .zip is already uploaded on the other thread)

Thanks for your time and help!

I would suggest that you rid your system of Symantec/ Norton.

Download the Norton Removal Tool (NRT); save to desktop. Then go to desktop, RIGHT-click on the NRT icon and select Run as Administrator. When complete - re-boot.

NRT - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply, OK

I would recommend MS Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't... Read more

A:Comp in bad shape...please help with log

Hello guitarded_1 and welcome to TSF,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree and check for updates. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

*********************************************************

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

I've pretty much given up hope on fixing my computer, but i really need to get my files off the hard drive. One day my son was just playing his computer game and it froze so he shut off the computer, and about an hour later when i tried to go on it would not go past the Windows XP loading.. i can't even get into safe mood or attempt to scrub my hard drive if i wanted to. Does anyone know a way that i can get some files off my hard drive?

Try a repair install . . boot from the XP installation disc, ( watch for the "Strike any key to boot from CD" prompt) . . do not select the first repair, select install and at the next screen if you have a choice of "Repair the current installation" choose that. If you do nto have that prompt, you will not be able to do a repair

A repair install should not destroy data.

If that fails, you can install the Hard drive as a slave in another XP machine and copy files.

Good luck . . wrs

A:Help! My Computer Is In Bad Shape!

Hello,I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software and a Firewall. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install them first!!Avira, AVG OR Active Virus Shield (uncheck the Security Toolbar during install) are good FREE antivirus.Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!Comodo OR Kerio are FREE firewalls. Understanding and using firewallsReboot your computer afterwards. After reboot, perform a full scan with your Antivirus and let it remove anything it is finding. Then reboot once again in order to delete files that were in use previously.Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply - then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

One morning I got up for work and figured I'd shut my PC down for the day. It didn't shut down right, and ultimately I had to hold the power button in until it clicked off. I tried to start it up again, to see if the problem would work itself out, but I got no display response from my monitor. I tried a different monitor - no good. I put another video card in - no good, with either monitor. I tried some other things, but ultimately bought a new motherboard to see if it would help. Now, on this board, when i hit the power button my fans start up, but nothing else seems to happen. No beeps, or processing, or display.

If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. I'm running a p4 2.4 with 1gb of pc2700 ddr. i've got the ati 9700 pro, 2 hard drives, two cd drives (one's a dvd), and floppy of course. My problem might be with the power supply, or maybe even with the processor, I'm really unsure. Thanks in advance.

A:Meh PC's in bad shape. Can't tell what's wrong.

You may indeed want to try a new powersupply before you do anthing else. If its you're P/S you risk damaging the other parts. Waht make/model is the P/S and how many watts?

That said, make sure you have the jumpers set up correctly on the new motherboard - check FBS and most importantly the Clear CMOS jumper - its hould be in the Normal position.

Also it could be shorting on the case or a bad connection. Try seeting the mobo up outide the case with only 1 stick of ram, video card, and CPU and H/S fan and see if it starts. Do not attach any drives or other cards.

Summary of problems:

OneCare disabled/unable to uninstall/reinstall
Control Panel-freezes, blank screen, freezes when uninstalling

When I try to login outside of safe mode the screen goes blank after entering password and i have to restart computer.
When I selected the option to repair my computer (after hitting F8 upon restarting) I got a warning to check for viruses and that the computer has been shut down.

The techs for OneCare were not able to gain remote access to my computer and they believe the computer requires a repair or restore.

The techs at Acer believe I have a virus.

I noticed browser problems after updating my to IE8.

hi

recently, after starting up my PC and being on the desktop, my computer freezes (for example i click on a program or file and the computer just stops working, forcing me to manually reboot). A few days ago, when i rebooted as a result of this i got several error messages:

SynTPEnh.exe - Bad image
C:/windows/system32/synTPAPI.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.

I had the same messages with the following three files:
OPENGL32.dll - Bad image
RtHDVCpl.exe is either not designed...etc

rundll32.exe - Bad image
AClayers.dll is either not designed...etc

After that I tried to do a system restore point. I could not do it, as my PC prompted me with the following message:
'The disk (C) has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on C.' I tried to Check the disk. I could NOT automatically fix system errors as it said that the disk (C) is in use and i can only schedule a Checkdisk at next startup. I did however manage to do the second option of Checkdisk (scan) which was completed and it said it found some problems and fixed them and put them into a folder named 'FOUND'. Afterwards I still could not fix file system errors automatically though.

I rebooted and CHKDSK started. It gave me a a list of messages along this line:
'Recovering orphaned file ... into directory file ....'

Then the PC rebooted and all seemed fine, for two days...Today i again experienced a freeze of my desktop (when clicking on a pr... Read more

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible.
Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it?s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove the following IF listed.

MyWay/Mybar
Messenger Plus 3
Search Assistant

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for eac... Read more

Hi guys, after cleaning this computer of a virus I received through a torrent file(as you can see in this thread it's still had it's fair share of problems. After it was apparently cleaned, the internet connection was suddenly incredibly slow, worse than dial up even, and I notice that the CPU Usage very easily goes to 100 percent. It often freezes up as well. AVG, ewido, Spybot, Adaware, and even the Panda Software Active Scan all show up with absolutely nothing after scanning.

I tried to just reinstall XP, but after it restarts, it comes to the blue screen that asks for the disc and does nothing after pressing enter. That's said to have been since I'm using a copy, though that doesn't make sense seeing as I've used the same disc to install XP on the same computer with no problem. Anyway, if you can help me figure this out it'd be much appreciated. I'm very soon going off to college and the computer in question is my mother's, so she'll need this one fixed as I'll be taking my lap top with me. I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing has worked, even system recovery, so if you could help me figure out what in the world is causing all the problems I'd be incredibly thankful. Thank you.

Here's a WPFInd and Hijack This log to start:

Turn off system restore. On the desktop, right-click on My Computer, click properties, click system restore tab, check turn off system restore, click apply and then OK. Restart your computer. Once your system is clean you will turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Run this uninstaller to get rid of the peper.a trojan:

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/uninst.exe

*Note: Just click on the uninst.exe and let it run. When it is finished it will just close. There will be no dialogue. Also you must be connected to the internet for the uninstaller to be effective.

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and remove:

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router running Tomato v1.24 firmware. Behind that router, I have a desktop running Win7 Ultimate and a number of laptops running XP, Vista, and various Linux distros.

I use the desktop mainly as a storage box/file server, but it's also a media server and torrent box as well as general browser/email use. When moving files around between computers, especially when I have torrents running, everything slows to a crawl on all the computers connected to my AP and moving a few GB of files from a lappy to the desktop can take hours.

I want to prioritize the traffic on my LAN so that file transfers between computers take priority over, say, torrents, but not necessarily over browsing or email.

I've searched the Google, but I'm mainly coming up with a bunch of articles from pre-2005 that seem to be pitching a vertain brand of router more than explaining how to prioritize your network traffic.

I've looked into QoS, but from what I've read, that's more for shaping traffic to/from the internet, not necessarily local traffic.

Is there a way, short of getting another Linux box to act as a router/firewall or dedicated server, to prioritize my local traffic over stuff coming in from outside?

A:My computer in critical shape...help!!!

Before you proceed with these instructions, please move HijackThis into a separate folder of its own in program files or my documents but not in the temporary files, so that it can create proper back-ups which can be restored, if necessary.
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Warning: Do not run Option #2 until you are instructed to do so. Running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

I was having tremendous problems with a Lenovo laptop. Called their tech support and they stepped me through falling back to an earlier running version, 'Oct. 13, 2008' to be exact. The backup seemed to proceed alright. But now on the first reboot after this fall back I'm getting the message, "NTLDR is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" But when I do that I just keep getting the same message over and over. I THINK I'm so close to having this back up and running buuuuuuut.... How do I uncompress what ever this NTLDR so it will finish booting up

Thank you for any help
Aaron

A:Trying to restore from Backup. Might be in bad shape now.

You'll need to boot to the Recovery Console.
Boot with the XP OS CD:

When you boot from the CD, the following is displayed:
On a black screen:
Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...
Screen turns Blue, and Windows Setup is displayed at the top.
at the bottom is displayed the following in sequence:
Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver
Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR)...
Setup is loading files (file names displayed)
Title changes to Windows XP Professional Setup

The options to setup or repair Windows are displayed
Choose To repair a Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.
You may need to choose the Windows installation if you have a dual boot system
You will need to enter the Administrator password unless you previously disabled that requirement; if it's blank, just press enter.

Once in the Recovery Console, type the following three commands:
CD \
attrib -c ntldr
exit

If your PC came with a Recovery CD rather than an OS CD, it may have an option to boot to the Recovery Console.
Note that if you have a SATA hard drive, you may need to provide the SATA drivers on a Floppy when the system prompts Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver. If you don't have a floppy, there may be a BIOS setting that will switch the controller between IDE Compatibility mode and AHCI mode. Set it to IDE Compatibility to get into the Recovery console, then set it back when... Read more

My computer doesn't run like it used to. I freed up about 20 gigs of space today by deleting old files and games. When I used MS Defrag to analyze my drive, average fragments per file was 3.25, and drive fragmentation was 33%. I haven't deframented my computer in about 2 years D: My computer doesn't start up nearly as quickly as it used to, and loading times ingame are atrocious.

Please reccomend a course of action to me to rehabilitate my computer! I am downloading PerfectDisk right now (I skimmed the forums). What other programs or other things could I to to make my computer tolerable?

(PS, please be careful reccomending cleanup programs. My dad uses the Netscape mail client and I accidentally deleted all his addresses, inbox, etc)

What are your system specs?
Run an anti-virus program and a spyware cleaner. Microsoft anti-spyware beta is pretty good and it's free. If you don't have an anti-virus program and don't want to pay for one. Get Grisoft AVG anti-virus. It works as well as most of the big ones like McAfee and NAV, PC-Cillin etc.

Hi, does anybody know how I just take out the parts I want of an Image in Gimp, to later put on my website. there is a scissors tool, but I dont know if thats the right tool and when I click on the outlines of the model figure in the photo, it makes dots, but then what do I do, cause clicking again makes nothing but lines etc, doesnt cut out anything.

Gimp, is a photo manipulator like photoshop I think, not as advanced.

Thanks

A:How do I cut out a shape of a photo in Gimp

Well you either have to select the parts you want with a selection tool, either point to point or magic wand, whatever works best...or approach from the opposite side, where you erase the parts you don't want, preferably from a layer copy of the original, then you can copy a selected area as its own image or separate layer and get rid of the rest or crop and save the erase method image as a separate image; both in a format that preserves the transparency around the image.
Either method takes some practice in getting just the right hardness to the edge of the eraser or feather to the selection tools so the extracted image looks natural...not extracted.

I'm looking to try and make a custom size and shaped taskbar. My objective is to have a taskbar that isn't the full length of the screen, but has a gap on the end so I can have a permanent sidebar with some things on there that I want...I photoshopped a picture together to demo what I want, notice that the taskbar ends and then the sidebar starts.

Is it possible? If so, how?

A:Custom Size/Shape taskbar

I don't think that is possible. Besides, the "Show Desktop" control all the way in the right bottom corner would be in the way. Why don't you tweak the Vista sidebar ( Vista Windows Sidebar - Reinstate on Windows 7 ). That is compatible with the taskbar.

Hello,

Say i have an image, how can i scale that image to a specific shape? e.g a squigly circle etc...

Also,
Say i have an image 1000x500 and the program i am importing this image into only allows squares i.e 256x256, 16x16,1024x1024 etc...
So the only thing i can think of is scale the canvas to 1024x1024 which would leave a big amount of space and a big file
Would anyone have any suggestions on what else i could do? ( i want image to stay in proportion too and same size or bigger)

That's a very good question! I've used several programs, Adobe photoshop, MS-photodraw, Photosuite 4, and Photosuite 4 Platinum, all give mixed results. Out of all Photosuite 4 is the easiest to work with and gives me the closest cut.
As you know the higher the resolution of object the cleaner the cut. I Usually do a rough cut of an object, save that object and work that object separately. After rough cut use your magnifier and freehand cut edges, cutting to transparent. After cut is complete around object use your transparency tool and lightly touch the edge around the object. This process does a great job of smoothing all the cut edges. I've used this process many times and it produced great cuts for composites.
hope that helps Dave

Hi, I have a visio project created from an Access Database. The information in the DB automatically creates shapes for each section of the final Visio page or pages (OLE). In this case 27 shapes and in each shape a number of connected shapes. All worked perfectly and I have two perfect 11 x 17 pages however I need to move many of the shapes on the page yet when created all the shapes were Guarded. =GUARD(IF(Prop.CstLftX>0,ThePage!User.BaseX+Prop.CstLftX+LocPinX,User.px+LocPinX))

I can unguard each one at a time but it's really time consumming; opening the Shapesheet and finding the pinx and piny values then typing them (overwriting) the formula pnx and piny.

Does anyone know a way to mass change or "unguard" a Visio sheet? Not unprotect, the VSD is not protected, all protection options are unchecked.

I'm new to Word 2007 (and not yet real happy with it). The documents I create for work contain lots of shapes, mostly arrows and text boxes. I click Insert>Shapes, select arrow, and insert it where I want it. Is there some way to make Word remain in the "insert" mode so I can insert a bunch of shapes without having to click three times for each one?

A:Word 2007 Insert Shape

Morning md2lgyk,
When you insert a shape, does the ribbon switch to the Format tab, where you can change the color and style of the shape? If so, on the far left of that tab you should see a box with all of the shapes in it. You can click and insert them at will from there, without going back to the Insert tab. Hope that helps.

Hi Guys,

I have a large excel document with around 50 sheets and on one sheet a grouped shape which needs rotating based on the result of a formula in a cell. Now I have the VBA for this and it works fine when I assign this macro to the shape and run manually, see below:

Sub RotateShape()
With ActiveSheet.Shapes("Group 1")
.Rotation = Range("E4").Value
End With
End Sub

What I'd really like to do is have this rotation perform automatically when I change the value of a cell from a drop down menu on a different sheet. The 2 sheets in question are "Sheet 1" for cell change and "Sheet 26" for shape rotate.

I have played with IF statements but with no success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Gareth

A:Automatically rotate a shape using an IF statement

I should also add that the cell "E4" in the above code is located on "Sheet 26" and is calculated using a formula. This is not the cell I wish to trigger the rotation, that is on "Sheet 1".

When my wifes HP monitor comes out of sleep mode it has a hour-glass shape to the display. You have to physically turn off the monitor and turn it on again to correct the problem. My wife worked with HP support to try some things to fix the problem (I'm not sure exactly what they tried) but none of it worked. They ended up shipping a new monitor, but it does the same thing. They said we need to ship the computer to them and that it could take weeks. My wife uses the computer everyday for her company that she runs out of the house. It doesn't bother her, but it drives me crazy that it is not working properly. She can't afford to be without her computer that long. Any ideas what could be wrong and how to try to fix it?

So I recently installed Windows XP (Windows 7 was too much for my poor desktop...) and I just realized that when I close a windows explorer window (say, My PC or My Documents) after resizing it or changing its shape, the next time I open that window the previous shape and size of the window are restored. Many people complained because this feature got scrapped in Windows 7. But even so, is there a way for me to disable it?

I know it's an odd question, but I tend to constantly enlarge and shrink windows to manipulate their contents. Back when I had Win7, it was OK because next time I opened them they had the nice default size, but with Windows XP they stay the same. It gets annoying when the My Documents window blocks half the screen just because last time I used it, I resized it to half the screen!

Last week on the Operating System, XP forum, I posted a request for assistance with reducing the number of programs that run on my computer. One person instructed me to repost my question here - which I swear I did - but I couldn't find it later when attempting to check on it. So, I followed the advice from another responder, installing some helpful utilities, running others, etc.

I had printed out the information given to me, read it carefully and followed the advise to the best of my limited ability. Now, as is typical, my computer is running slower, some commands are being totally ignored, and I still have way too many things running (55), most of which (if I'm interpreting what I read correctly) shouldn't be turned off or disabled. (I do need specific instructions on how to uninstall Norton - which I have disabled, after installing AVG. I understand that it requires advanced technological smarts.)

Once again I've attempted to make the switch from IE7 to Firefox. I keep hearing how superior Firefox is, yet, I find it aggravating, specifically the fact that I can't use my arrow keys, Home nor End keys to get up and down pages. Why is that???? Also, Firefox took away my Google Bookmarks toolbar and I can't get it back. Now I can't get it back on IE either. In last couple of days PC has suddenly become unreliable ... screen freezes, cursor locked ... ctl+alt+del will not work.
When this happens found I can recover ... but often only for 1 or 2 mins ... by simply plugging something into USB port .. as soon as you get the "Bing Bong" device found noise, screen unfreezes.

Sometimes wait 30 sec to a min and PC unfreezes.

Also notice PC will run for an Hr or so OK, then get intermittent errors of working cursor changes to window resize mode (double ended arrow) and then work is erratic until it recovers.
Also it will frequently 'disappear' as soon as you move to an active window, or turn into text entry 'vert bar' cursor for no reason.

Both Kyb & Mouse are USB ... and normally via a KVM ... have moved to direct plug in to eliminate KVM.
Sometimes hitting 'ESC' several times will return control.
I have reinstalled mouse driver .... but no change.

Now computer has many programs that won't run - at startup approx a dozen startup messages about unable to run programs, etc - most common error centres around missing iertutil.dll as well as urlmon.dll (are others as well).Fortunately I can still access the internet.

I ran a sfc /scannow and it appeared to fix some problems but there were others it was unable to correct (although I'm not good at reading log file so difficult to figure out what errors were).

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any help is much appreciated.

I was cleaning a customers PC today and came across something that I have not seen before. their original complaint was that AVG antivirus was not working and could not be reinstalled. Suspecting an infection, I installed and ran Super-Antispyware. It came up with various Vundo variant trojans and rootkits, but the problem still remained with AVG. I inserted my flash drive to reinstall AVG and it was missing from my drive too! To shorten the story, the rootkit was removing all entries in Windows Explorer with the letters "AVG", because when I renamed the AVG installation file "AV" it reappeared on my drive. Have you heard of a rootkit that has been targeting the "resident" antivirus in this way? I presume that it is able to cripple the AV (whether AVG or another AV) by blocking access to its files by name. Any thoughts?

Change PowerPoint shape based on data in Excel. I need to change the color of a specific unique shape on a specific slide in PowerPoint presentation using data obtained from Excel.

issues are:
1. how to select the slide I want
2. how to select the unique shape object I want
3. how to use the data in Excel to change the color of that one particular shape object, not all the shapes of that type.

example is I use the numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) stored in Excel and when the number changes the color of the associated oval in PowerPoint is changed.

A:Change PowerPoint shape based on data in Excel

If you have a powerpoint presentation I imagine the shape you mention is an imbedded shape and linked to Excel, well, then you don't need to know which slide and the unique object, you let Execl do that and the imbedded shape will change when Excel is changed and refreshed.

Hello. This is my first post on this forum. My wife's laptop got a virus...I can't remember the one, but it was a fake virus protection type. I did a hard reset since it has totally taken over the cpu (couldn't do anything but watch it run).

Now when I try to boot up, it will show the Compaq logo, and will offer the "esc for boot menu" but after that will only go to the black screen with the cursor.

If I press F8 nothing happens.

If I use a recovery disk, startup repair cannot fix the problem automatically. After a lot of trial and error I was able to do a system restore, but it didn't make a difference. Now I can't restore any more.

One of the threads I read here had a link that suggested such a problem could be a corrupt files(s) and that the only solution is a new install of Windows. Before I go that route, does anybody have any other suggestions?

Thank you,
Angelo

I have set up the layout so that when the user clicks on a section the details of that section come up (eg land size, price, location etc), but what I would like to do is have the mouse pointer change to, for example, a hand, over the various spots to show the user that the mouse is in the correct position in order to click to get specific information.

I have a dual monitor arrangement - one 19" Hansol 930D CRT and one 22" Hanns-G LCD widescreen - governed by ATI Hydravision and basic Windows dualscreen. I also have Catalyst Control Centre but don't use this much as I don't 'game'.

Power scheme settings turn the monitors off after 20 mins, but when they return, the CRT screen has recently started appearing in a distorted shape - as if it were set at the wrong resolution. It is not - all settings still appear correct (1024 x 768; 85Hz refresh; custom 105% DPI) in both Display Properties and CCC. All drivers are up to date.

I think it may be a driver problem as I think that (although I haven't retested it) if I revert the drivers to basic Windows rather than manufacturers', this might not happen.

Has anyone met this before - or any solutions?

I apologise that the title couldn't be more specific. My laptop recently was infected, I presume, with what appeared to be a pretty bad virus. I can only presume that's what it was since I couldn't find out exactly what the virus was, and even after going through extreme lengths to remove any trace of software that's suspicious or out-of-the-ordinary even in the slightest (nevertheless I ensured that anything I removed wouldn't damage the PC), I'm still having issues.

I can provide you with a rough timeline of the issues. I would seriously appreciate help because this is INCREDIBLY urgent, I am a Design student at University, and I have to hand in all my work on Friday. I haven't slept in 2 nights, last night was spent removing malware. I haven't been able to back my work up because I just simply don't have anything to back it onto, money is incredibly tight at the moment, but I don't wish to ask for sympathy. Anyway, here's basically what happened

Laptop has been running absolutely fine for months. Occasionally I'd slip up and accidentally let a toolbar install itself onto the system, eg. conduit and anything along those lines. I had also made the mistake of lending it to friends a couple times, and of course finding myself having to uninstall toolbars every time I got it back. Months and months ago, I did happen to install PrivitizeVPN while trying to get around the strict university filters, and I found out this morning that PrivitizeVPN is actually a piece of... You don't say in your long post what A/V you are running and if it is up to date. I would suggest that to cut down the time you would be best to back up you important data (I'm very surprised that someone in your position and being computer savvy has not kept a continous backup of data going all the time) and do a clean install. my labtop won't come on somehow. I definitely turn it on, and it has plenty of batteries, because the two light on the side of the bottom of the labtop is on, the power light and the battery light, it's both on. but the screen is still plain black. i don't know what's wrong with it, it's pretty new, i got it just last year. it won't work even with a battery cord connect to it. i tried closing the labtop by pushing down the power button for several seconds so the powerlight would turn off, than i turn it back on again. the powerlight turned on, but the screen is still black.

At the DISKPART prompt, type: list volume
Make note of the number of the simple volume whose drive letter you want to assign, change, or remove.
At the DISKPART prompt, type: select volume n
Select the volume, where n is the volume's number, whose drive letter you want to assign, change, or remove.
At the DISKPART prompt, type one of the following: assign letter=L
Where L is the drive letter you want to assign or change.

My labtop is constantly shutting down on its own. Sometimes it shut down when I turn on the labtop after 5 seconds, sometimes it shut down in 20 minutes, and sometimes it just won't even turn on. I think its because it is overheating but I don't know what to do. Can anyone give me simple steps that can possibly solve this problem? I have a window XP labtop, bought about less than a year. If you need to know anything I can tell you... if my labtop doesn't shut down automaticly again. Thanks!

A:Toshiba Labtop

It's hard to imagine it overheating in 5 seconds. If it's still under warranty, I suggest contacting Toshiba, don't let the warranty run out before you let them take a crack at it.

One quick check, try a memory test, here's two to choose from.

i just bought a refurbushed labtop.and didnt have enough time to put the key in it,and now microsoft 7.will not let it stay on.

A:turn on my labtop

On a new installation you should have 30 days before Windows 7 gives you a hard time about entering the key and even then it should allow you to enter it.You just bought a refurbished laptop and it should have some sort of warranty, bring it back or contact where you purchased it from for help, there may be something wrong with it.If it is for some reason out of warranty, then try a Factory Restore but assume that anything you have saved on it and any programs you added will be gone. If there is anything important on the drive and you do not have access to save it, boot to a Live Linux DVD (Don't install) to access your hard drive to save your files to an external drive. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have an HP envy 17 se nb pc. Turned the computer off at night and then turned it on in morning.
It asked for a windows password which I had disabled because I don't want to type it in all the time.
So I typed in the previous password and the screen said it was the wrong password. The computer then shut down by itself. I turned it back on and the screen is black and the caps lock button is giving me two blinks which means the bios needs updating. Went to the Microsoft site for bios update and all there instructions
will not work. Also the hard drive light blinks for about ten seconds an then goes off. I also think that the fan is not running and the computer gets very warm. I also removed the battery and the power plug and just plugged the power plug back in. This computer seems to be dead in the water. Can anyone help Thank you: Rodwell

A:Labtop Will Not Start

When I search for Envy 17 se nb, I get 68 results.
You'd get the BIOS from HP not Microsoft. The problem is that with 68 models, no one but you knows exactly which model you have and which drivers to link you to.
http://support.hp.com/us-en/models?q=envy+17+se+nb&tool=s-001#Z7_M0I02JG0K0DA50AUV7JQN410A5

Why does my laptop heat up so fast??? the fan stays on continuously.

Do I have too many running processes?
I usually have around 45 running processes. Can someone help me to reduce the running processes? I dont know which ones i need!

Thanks..

A:Why Is My Labtop Fan Always Running?

You might open Task Manager to see if a single process is using 90-100% of your CPU. Right click an empty space on the task bar and select Task Manager. Select the Processes tab and scroll through the listed processes. If one is using all of the CPU power, the fan will run constantly, fast, and usually loudly.

I've had problems with AdobeUpdater and SymantecUpdater in the past...to the extent that I uninstalled Adobe Reader and Norton AntiVirus (Norton couldn't come up with a solution).

Let me know if this solves your problem or if you find the process that may be causing the problem.

Try logging in in Safe Mode.
When boot up begins, start pressing F8 repeatedly until you see the Advanced Options page.
Select Safe Mode and try to boot all the way into XP there.
Post back what happens then.

I am having problems with my Dell Inspiron 2650 with Windows XP Home.
It just turns off randomly without warning, usually while I am playing Age of Mythology by Microsoft. It also kills itself while running McAfee VirusScan and Nero CD burning software. At one point it was doing it every 30 minutes or so. I finally ran enough of VirusScan to detect some viruses, which I promtly deleted, ran ad-aware, etc. It subsided temporarily, but now does it almost exclusively while playing AOM. It the game creating the problem? Or the cd-rom? I am lost on this one.

So I had bad clusters on my HD. I backed uup all my data, removed the HD and replaced it w/a new one and restored the backup. But now I can't access the web, set up through a NETGEAR Router with built-in firewall, connected to a DSL modem which is connected to a portal for networks. It works on other computers but not my laptop. It's connected to the network. I tried System Restore, still didn't work. What should I do??? Please help me!!! Please reply....

Thanks,
